Maomao took a lot of heat for how she acted in this episode, especially in the treatment of Zulin’s sister, but I don’t think she did anything wrong. Luomen treating everything as a charity had given the apothecary shop a reputation that everything was free, and that was making it difficult for Maomao to pay the bills. And yes, Maomao talked rough with Zulin’s sister, but it was a two-part test: first, to see how serious she was about becoming a courtesan, something that would not be an easy life; and second, if she couldn’t handle the way Maomao spoke to her, she’d never survive the madam. And, as it turned out, she was extremely serious about becoming a courtesan, considering her father was just a short step from having her become a streetwalker for gambling money, and that would literally be the death of her, as we’ve seen so often in this show. At least at the Verdigris House she’d at least be cared for, as well as have a higher level of clientele.

So nice to see a realistic response to how Maomao handled this situation. I have seen people calling Maomao everything from hypocritical and cruel to a slave trader and child trafficker because of her actions. Maomao is not that well off either, she is living in the slums and have someone else to take care of, she can't afford to help every sob story she comes across.
