It's impressive how many different ways the vocalists can do chainsaw noises in all these songs

Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, "Come!" I looked, and behold, a white horse, and she who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to her, and she went out conquering and to conquer.

fuck you for not letting this amazing outro play out. For once, just experience it without understanding everything on a first watch. I know you gonna do this shit with all of them, can you even say you love art if you hinder its intended viewing?

Power staring at the Vending Machine is, as I once heard, the "REAL Real Broke Vibes" where you can't even afford the caffeine to get through your shift type energy.

BlueSummer

Thanks for the uploads! >:D also the MM at the beginning. :D

Manipulative. Mysterious. A god complex. Yeah, you clocked Makima pretty good here.

Don't feel about YT missing out on the intro talks. That's what patreon is for. 😀

Ok ok ok.. time to be real: I would be able to hold a convo slightly, but would be sideglancing the whole time if I had been him.

I had ta join just now after stumbling across your CSM opening video when I saw you were a film nerd and you were watching this series. (I'm gonna be tl;dr — but I promise no spoilers from me, I just have to gush about this episode). First: After hearing your film nerd rants while watching this — if you've never seen the anime film Paprika by Satoshi Kon… I cannot overstate how much it would absolutely blow you away as a film nerd. On to my rant specific to this CSM episode, it all revolves around a film nerd moment: When Denji & Power are arguing about the murder that happened and who's actually responsible there's a sneaky film reference that sets an important tone for things in this episode. That prolonged shot of Makima's booty while she uncrosses and re-crosses her legs — that's a straight up nod to the famous Interrogation Scene from Basic Instinct. It's all about luring attention away from the issue others are concerned about in order to stoke sexually-driven motivation that serves her own interests. To drive that home even more, immediately after that, Makima's attitude is calmly relaxed even while she's in complete control over Power who won't even look at her, and Denji is straight up motivated solely by his libido the whole episode. It's a flawless reference disguised as fanservice, but one that also really hammers in that god complex dommy mommy attitude you were mentioning picking up from Makima. The other detail is how the parallel between Power's past to Denji's is done. The differences in their stories and characters have some subtle details that highlight a really interesting thing about her character, and also about Denji's. It starts with the juxtaposition by highlighting them as a cat person and a dog person. Beyond establishing them as not seeing eye-to-eye, after the scene showing that they're essentially in the role of being trained as hunting dogs for Makima and the government, their reactions to her earlier stand out to that same theme. While Denji's dog is Pochita and we know they meet when Denji's fairly young, Pochita is a proper pet name. Power's a Fiend so her actual age and her appearance don't necessarily match visually… and the first hint is that she names her cat Meowy. In the flashback we see why she attaches to it when she's wandering all dirt-stained and naked. Then after she gets picked up by Makima, now she's always wearing slightly oversized and baggy clothes, and can't go anywhere without being accompanied by a guardian. That calls back to the start of the episode, where Power's telling lies about Denji to avoid getting into trouble that are… stupidly transparent. That's because in terms of psychological development, Power is acting EXACTLY like a toddler. Her barbarian-like behaviour and not being fully Human just masks that, so that it's less immediately obvious unless you focus on those little details. Power is acting the same way towards the Bat Devil and towards Makima when she's told to behave. She's not in a position of… power in order to do anything else, so she lies to keep safe but never assumes anyone else will. It's the same reason why she thinks Denji talking about turning to chainsaws is a weird human joke because she thinks he's just a human, doesn't expect him to lie, and doesn't ever assume she could be wrong. That's why Denji and Power suddenly have an understanding when the Bat Devil eats Meowy. Power realizes what Denji's loss is as soon as she experiences it, but you also understand that their chat in the train is not just a difference she has from being a Fiend. She's just not experienced enough to know anything… like a kid who's WAY you get than Denji was when his dad died. That's why Denji understands why she's acting the way she is because he's already been through that trauma, but when he was at an older age psychologically. Before they go off together, while Denji is standing up and drinking a soda he bought, Power's crouched way down with her face just pressed against the glass at the very bottom looking up into the machine. It frames her as if she's a little kid and Denji is older just because of the framing of those scenes. It isn't until Power realizes that she can get Denji to do what SHE wants in exchange for what Denji wants that it starts to parallel them being at the same height again. That's also why it's so important that Makima's body totally obscures both of them during their argument, because their power dynamic totally eclipsed when she's in the picture. That's why, even while all that's settling in, the Denji's getting pissed off and cutting the Bat Devil to bits is 'cause RIGHT NOW our boy just wants to cop a feel, and this Bat Devil is messing with his opportunity — which brings things right back to why that Basic Instinct nod at the start of the episode was flat-out brilliant, because it all comes right back to that. Like you saw, the end credits hammer in that analogy to Makima being portrayed as a goddess with a hold over everybody else, and the dog on a leash imagery even more than ever. It's just hard to gush about how awesome all the details are in this show, which is why I love that you will just go off about things like this, and hopefully appreciate a little nerd rant in return. (Also, amazing call-out on them using the Naruto color scheme in the ending, as I'd totally missed that).

That ED is just freaking insane. I love it!

Its great that you're talking so enthusiastically about the animation and sound design, but I can't hear any of it while the episode is playing lmao. Your voice is much quieter than it is.

My one critique is that the fighting feels slow and unimpactful, on account of how quick yet infrequent Denji's attacks are. You have three different scenes with him just nruto-running towards the guy and break up what is already a low energy fight with his "power-up" moment, standing on the rubble with his dress shirt flying in the wind, which admittedly looks cool, but is brought down by the lack of energy and power in the scenes before and after it. And the finishing shots of him shooting through Batso looks satisfying, but the build up to it looks worse and worse the more you rewatch it. The dude just punches the air, stops his fist and holds it, as Denji balances on one chainsaw, before flying up his arm and as his upward momentum deccelerates and he starts to fall, the dude just continues staring in the exact same "fisting the air" position. I'm trying to describe it, but a good animated fight should have a combination of energy, key-poses and gimmicks. RotTMNT is a great example thereof in almost each one of their fights, combining the fast movement of the turtles' attacks, with ninja-esque poses, while playing with their mystical weapons, either with Raph's force fields, Mikey's fireball, Donnie's tech or Leo's portals. I know its just the beginning of the anime, but even then having Denji just run around and strike the guy once in a while feels underwhelming, especially when its constantly undercut by something else, like the business woman leaving the room before Denji and the b*stard land on it, the bat guy throwing the car only for Denji to catch it, the aforementioned scene of Denji power-posing in the wind. Just look at Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and you'll see what I mean.
