Honestly thought you were going to cry on this one

In hindsight, Zuko had his mom's approval and wanted his father's while Azula had and wanted the opposite. After reading the comics, it's crazy how much Ursa has had to put up with at the hand of Ozai.

I love the man with no name, spaghetti western vibes of zukos story here

Winter Turnip

this one is a hard one for me to watch glad i was able to see it through your perspective

kinda late for the party, and not a spoiler since is not shown up in the series, but rather in the comics, but you are not wrong about azula in one thing: she DOES have demons inside... literally There is supposed to be a comic about the fire lord azulon pacting a deal with a demon so the baby came up being super powerful, however, the demon influence is basically at 100% there, so she isnt even she, is the demon possesing her since she was a baby, so all of her life she has been controlled lioke a literal puppet, which is why since she was so young she was stronger, smarter and powerful than anyone of her age It was supposed to be another comic that never came out about a kinda exorcism by aang and zuko to her, and ended up on her just fleeing afterwards, since now that she was free, she was scared of herself, since she was on passeger seat of herself her whole life and now she dont know HOW to live her own life -existencial crissis 101 -

I wonder if Alicia will figure out who Ozai's voice actor is? He is rather famous and prolific, in both the western voice acting scene, as well as a few movies that most people on earth have at least heard about. There's even a very famous Batman villain he voiced for 30+ years in both animated shows and video games. I realize I'm being vague on a video from 2022, but that's just how pathologically adverse to spoilers I am.

Something people seem to not understand with Azula is that she is a naturally violent and aggressive child like I was. I didn't abuse animals like her but I definitely used violence as a first resort in kindergarten. If you have one parent rejecting your violent nature while the other validates it, you gravitate towards the parent who doesn't deny who you truly are. Ursa's mistake was trying to suppress that nature instead of channeling it into something constructive or beneficial like my dad did for me with martial arts and sports.

Lmaaao I just got done watching your reaction to 2x6 like 5 minutes ago. What awesome timing, really. I hope you’re having a great morning.

Thank you for your episode. I'm sick and can't get out of bed, so that helps me slot.

Ozai's ambition has rubbed off onto Azula but not so much Zuko. He's more like his turtle-duck of a mother, protective and caring. And Zuko is right in that his suffering has made him stronger. His goals are askew, and he needs some introspection and perspective to discover who he is and what is worth his strength. Also it's only been 1 episode but I already miss Iroh.

This is the episode ive been waiting for you to watch for SO long. Its my favorite episode XD Im surprised you managed not to cry in that episode btw, its a heavy one. I'm really glad you are enjoying the series so far.

Hi Alicia, this is your daily reminder to smile.

Firelord Zuko aside, Firelord Iroh would be an unforgettable villain. Imagine Aang fighting through a legion of conquerors and hotheads to walk into the palace just barely before Sozin's Comet. And Iroh just goes "Oh, the Avatar! What an honor," then invites the Gaang to the most tense tea party put to screen.

Man. I think this might be the first long post I make. This is one of my favorite episodes because of how packed full of layers it is. If there was ever a place to start, it’s with Azula. I see a lot of people get confused over exactly what Azula’s deal here is. I’ve even seen some people say she’s poorly written for being this way for no reason. This tells me they failed the subtlety check or have never come into contact with a person carrying any true malevolence within them, and I have two perspectives on it to offer. The first is that, medically, some people are just born with a complete lack of empathy. A total inability to care for or bond with others. That MIGHT be Azula’s case, and the story works just as well, but I think we can look a bit deeper for more insight. The truth is that Azula was just better at playing her Father’s game. The game of manipulation, lies, efficiency and ferocity. Zuko and Azula both see their father as the ultimate judge and power in their worlds. He is the standard by which they measure their lives. However, Azula simply isn’t good at playing her Mother’s game, the game of bonding, compassion, and growth through understanding yourself and those around you. Zuko was far more receptive. However, the mother isn’t the power in this dynamic, and power looks much more attractive, which is an illusion both of them will have to face eventually. I personally appreciate that Firelord Azulon meeting scene A LOT. It says so much in such a short amount of time, but then I realize that the whole subtext was that it was just a political ploy in Ozai’s part to flaunt his “still alive” children in front of his father like gambling chips. Zuko didn’t realize this, but I’m almost certain Azula did, which is why she wanted to stay and watch. Azula understands that both she and her father are the second born, meaning their path to power will probably be reliant on their elder bother’s failure or… elimination. Ozai just gave Azula the playbook. Abuse and criticize until they fail and you see an opportunity. I also appreciate Azulon’s loyalty to his son. It shows that there is a clear dichotomy of rotten evil and wholesomeness that exists all throughout the fire nation royal family that is manifesting itself now as Zuko’s struggle for self-identity. When he was teaching the boy about his swords, he told him they they aren’t separate weapons, but two parts of the same tool, and that to master it you had to utilize them together. A very Jungian sentiment. Now all the while, Zuko had his mother to fall back on when things didn’t work out, and she did a great job of steering him away from the influence of his father and sister in whatever way she could. But what could she do for Azula? You can’t beat that kind of Evil out of your child, it just make it worse. Especially when that behavior is supported by the person with all the real power in their family dynamic. You could try to talk them out of it, but that’s still basically impossible if she isn’t even receptive to it, and her son needed her far more, or maybe the need was just more obvious in him. Regardless, imagine Zuko’s situation. One day, that safety net just… disappears, leaving a gaping hole in your life while confirming all your worst fears about your whole family. You are no longer loved unconditionally. You can no longer trust anyone. All you can do is struggle to be the person others want you to be and hope it’s enough for them to not just kill you. That’s the fear I read in Zuko’s eyes at Azulon’s funeral. He now understands his life is potentially at risk. The more skilled Azula becomes the less need for his existence there is, and no one is going to be able to protect him. He is so UNBELIEVABLY LUCKY Iroh also needed him at that time. They were perfect for each other. Iroh needed a son to give his love to, Zuko needed an actual parent in his life. Azula needed an ass whooping she never got, Ozai needs a bullet in his lap. I also wanna point out a few details I haven’t seen you pick up on quite yet that I think you’ll really like to know about going forward, but if not, just ignore me. You seem more versed in cinematography than anything, but if wonder if you’ve fully recognized the musical motifs and sound design. Pointing out that flashback sound effect was a great call, but have you noticed yet that EVERY TIME Azula makes a move or appears on screen, there’s a noticeable “tong” musical note that plays? That’s her in a nutshell. Sharp, resonant, ominous, and subtle. Iroh also get his own theme whenever he’s delivering some wisdoms. It’s the Tsungi-Horn song he played during the Blue Spirit episode where Zuko rescued Aang. There’s also the “Agni Kai” theme, named for the term that references a “fire duel”, that was first played when Zuko first fought Zhao. It plays a lot in reference to people from the fire nation chasing or fighting. All the nations have musical motifs of their own that you might wanna keep an ear out for. See if you can point them out! Lastly, you kinda gushed over Ozai’s voice, but if you don’t recognize it, I’ll let you know that is Mark. frickin’. Hamhill. playing Ozai. THE Mark Hamhill, y’know, Luke Skywalker, the Joker? This show has some fucking talent behind it.

Yaaaas, more avatar videos plz!!!

Been waiting for this reaction/analysis and it did not disappoint, so glad you enjoyed this one (and no crying congratz). Also not sure if you knew but Ozais is voiced by the legendary Mark Hamill, one of my favorite voice actors :D

Jack Frost

As a great man once said: Remember, Zuko is not a Firebender who can wield swords, but a Swordsman who can firebend.

Lazy Swordsman

Thanks for another Avatar Video! I love Zuko-centric episodes.

NekoSoophie!

BamBam

Nakama Forever

This episode feels so much like one of those old westerns. A brooding loner comes into a small desert village on horseback. He the defends a family from corrupt law enforcers

JayKay

No Violet Evergarden? Big sad... JK, JK, Vinland saga is the top of the crust, can't wait for it!

BamBam

Wubs

UwU: so to answer your question without spoilers, the psychology of Azula is….complicated. I can recommend a video about it to watch once u finish the series as it will contain spoilers.

AG

If everyone was looking forward to episode 6, this is the episode I was waiting for. I won't say anything about future episodes, but this was easily my favorite episode up to this point of the show.

Verdigree

I feel I was like 10 or something when I saw this, but I definitely picked up a vibe that Zuko’s mom killed Fire Lord Azulon then fled
