interestingly enough this show was kind of a miracle that it was as consistent as it was, they hired out to other studios entirely to help out with animation, if I remember what I read about that correctly there were a few episodes that studio bones didn't do any animation work on other than checking over the work before green lighting it.

When we got 40 i was hoping for this can't want to watch Alicias reaction can you believe when this series was going it was a monthly series and at the time nobody knew what the fuck would happen it literally ended on a cliffhanger where ed was impaled we had to wait a month it was insane its one of the rare instances where the anime took mercy on us Bones especially is notorious for their cliffhangers but they didn't fuck around with Ed this time we see our boy is hurt and not out of the woods yet but he for sure ain't dead

Something I love about FMAB is the commitment to the theme of the value of human lives. Like how every character in it looks different and with a unique design. Compared to other anime where minor characters often end up looking the same. But in FMAB, characters all look distinct, even the minor ones. They are of different races, have different faces, body types, beards and hair styles. It reminds me a bit of Naoki Urasawas works (Monster, Pluto, 20th Century Boys), as he also tend towards giving even minor characters unique designs. And FMAB also likes make it clear that even the minor characters are still people, not just through design, but also through various small humanizing moments here and there. Like the soldier in Als armor trying to mimic him, to take an example in this episode. Or the way Olivias men react to her killing Raven. Its just small gestures that help make them feel like people. The Chimeras are one of my favorite examples of this philosophy. They end up joining with Ed and Al because they treated them as humans and treasured their lives. Even when they were by all accounts enemies. One could likely write a bunch more about it, but I am too tired for that and don´t want to veer into spoiler territory. So I am just going to leave it at that.

No matter how many times I rewatch this episode. Ed using his own soul to heal himself ALWAYS makes me forget to breath for a solid 2 minutes. Genuinely one of the most stressful moments i've seen in a anime.

For Al's breathing hard I think that is just a psychological thing. For the part about him saying "they saved him" by digging him out of the snow the moisture from the snow and ice could cover his blood seal and potentially smear it

I would never have noticed anything wrong with the footprints, but Kimblee not recognizing the smell of ammonia? That seems like a lazy mistake after we've been shown so many times that alchemy relies on knowing the chemical composition of everything. "Oh, Ed's not gonna die here, I'm not stressed," she says breezily, and the rest of us cackle.
