As someone who used to like Endeavor as a character, one of my favorite parts about him was that they never tried to downplay any of his past abuse. The story is well aware of how bad he was. So I find it weird that some people are so adamant on saying he wasn't so bad. So i'm super thankful that Alicia is able to appreciate his character while still acknowledging how bad his past is.

I know its messed up but when Endeavor gave Rei that look that its time to make more babies in my head I just heard DJ Khaled saying another one

Technically it's only Eugenics if it's from the Eugene region of France. Otherwise it's just Sparkling Human Breeding.

It is interesting to see what elicits sympathy from one person and not from another. Some people walk away from this episode hating endeavor more, others understand him more. I completely understand your view but I'll add a few thoughts on the other side 1. A lot of the assumptions about why touya died was that he was abused and driven to use his power even tho it was dangerous, which would be evil piece of shit behavior. Whereas in reality it seems his crime is not knowing how to fix his mistakes without acknowledging... it's a mistake. Which is a very human , real world mindset that breaks relationships and families. There's no doubt he was a bad father, he just wasn't the monster people expected 2. I think endeavor and the family are supposed to be real criticisms of parenting in Japan and Asian in general. Obviously because of superpowers, things get exaggerated. Instead of piano classes, it's quirk training. But I think that's why it is bad to say endeavor is villainous or a a bad person. He wants to make the best hero like many parents want the best doctor or lawyer. Bad parent, sure, but there are so many irl situations that are similar and I hate to put neglect on the same level of evil as other forms of abuse . I felt neglected but I don't hate my parents or want them dead. 3. Sunk cost fallacy. That's the explanation for why he continued with shoto. If you go broke and give up, you're admitting it's all for nothing. But if you can finally get it right, then at least something good came out of it right? It's a fallacy, so not a good way of viewing things. But it's...very human when you take the exaggerated superhero elements out . He didn't want shoto to burn ou lt too. This is one reason it's so good shoto started using his flames. He eventually would have had the opposite reaction to toya. He was hurting himself. Endeavor, even at his worst, points out in s2 that he's hurting himself. Ultimately, I feel less sympathy because I feel shoto actually was treated a million times worse and turned out way better as a human. Toya had his two siblings. Shoto was alone. Still turned out better. But perspective changes things. I'm personally very sympathetic to Toga and others aren't. I'm jealous she didn't get multiple episodes to her backstory to make people sad too.

Endeavor probably coped with Toya's "death" in that fire by focused on his obsession of surpassing All Might to even more extremes to ignore his grief. As we've seen this season, Endeavor does have strong feelings for the family he created, but because of the wounds caused by his obsession he can't bring himself to try to get close to his family without bringing attention to the scars he caused for it. We see in this flash back that his obsessive tendencies was so pervasive, that he could not properly function as a good father to his family, as when the target of his obsession was gone, he was able to make an effort to try to be a father, though the years living through his obsession had resulted in scars too big for him to ever properly connect with his family. I feel that Endeavor understood that he wasn't father material because of his obsession, so he shoved the responsibility of loving and handling the "extras" to Rei. Neither of the two had any clear idea about how to stop this fire that was born with the father's obsessive tendencies, resulting in this family that was already unstable to rabidly go critical.

It's not explicitly stated but it's pretty clear that the whole Todoroki plot is a representation of Kohei Horikoshi's enormous distain for old fashion Japanese practices/customs.

I really like the comparison between Scar and Endeavour. I'll throw in another character that isn't related to anime at all: Dalinar Kholin from the Stormlight Archive books. He's interesting in that he has gone through his character development before the events of the books even begin. So we first learn about him as a stern old guy who's sticking to the rules and wants to make stuff better for those around him. And only later the flashbacks tell us the whole story. But, listening to Alicia talk about Endeavour and Scar, I feel like Dalinar is the same character archetype, just with a storyline shifted into the past. Sorry about the text rant - Stormlight Archive is my favorite book series at this point, and I can't help but tell everyone about it whenever something reminds me of it.

you: "tell him to focus on other things and teach him he's more than just a rejected child that can't surpass all might" Endeavor: "Look outside yourself, play with your siblings and make friends (basically, there's more to life than being the strongest, you can do other things)" also you: "shut up!"

RE Rei being "complicit" From Toya's side it would look like she IS just letting Endeavour do whatever he wants, supporting him and not talking back or trying to change things, because everything she did do to try and call him out or reshape the path they were going down was behind the scenes. Of course Toya would think she was part of the problem when he doesn't see her trying to push against the issues raised - it's very understandable that he'd think she was as much a part of the problem as his father. And she was. That talk she had with him on the front steps before he burned himself to 'death'? That should have been said to him much, much earlier. That should have been talked about when they realised there was an issue with his quirk. Let's be honest, though - she should have pushed back on raising her son to fill his father's shoes and presented this talk as fact well before Toya's dream was set in stone - definitely well before it was shattered. So, yes, she does have blame in this because she was the mother and should have put her foot down in the early years of raising their children. Another part of the family puzzle is how Toya's life changed with Shoto coming along. To Toya, when it was just him, his father was with him every day, training and being loved and getting all the attention. This is the dream he keeps chasing - being a worthy successor to his father, chasing his father's dream and making it his own. When it was learned that his dream was never going to happen, he had the same reaction that Endeavour had - anger and upset and denial and, finally, acceptance. They grieved their dreams, though one ended up in seeking the dream through other paths - Endeavour by having surrogates to chase it for him, Toya by rejecting the dream completely, spurning it and all that was part of it. Another thing to note: they explain it a bit better in the manga, but Fuyumi wasn't born to be another "chance" to surpass All Might - it's shown that Rei and Endeavour both thought it would be a nice idea for Toya to have siblings and she was born before they realised there was an actual issue with Toya's quirk. Thus he doesn't feel threatened by her or count her as someone who understands his situation - she's just his little sister. Natsuo, he sees as an equal - he was also 'crafted' but ended up being a failure - the difference is that Fuyumi and Natsuo grew up in a house that was already focussed on 'replacement' and didn't get that 1:1 time with their father because they were never really considered capable of being strong enough. Thus, neither of them were as upset about their situations because they didn't really know any differently. To Fuyumi, Toya was her older brother who her parents worried about getting hurt but who was reckless in chasing his dream. To Natsuo, Toya was his older brother who couldn't accept the idea that Shoto was their fathers' golden child. They never knew the Toya who was the wanted child. They never knew the father who doted and adored. So the disconnect between them created a lot of frustration for Toya, making him feel even more alone than he was - because he DID see the family before and what he lost. Shoto, though - he was the one that broke everything, because Toya's replacement had been found and now there was a golden child again - someone who could fulfill the dream that Toya had. Of course he lashed out. I will say, there is more to Toya's story that we'll eventually get to, but I just wanted to enthuse a bit about how well written the Todoroki family are and how cool it is to see family dynamics like this explored in a shonen. One of my favourite things about MHA and One Piece is that while they explore the world at large and the implications of society and the changes that can be wrought by a few people (both good and bad), they also focus on family and how it can make and destroy people.

I think a point to be taken in when evaluating everything is that, from what we're shown, Toya also just seems to have a very obsessive personality baked into him. There's really only so much drive that can be obtained from having someone else's dream wrought onto you. I think it's a fair assessment to surmise that, even if Endeavor and Rei had really sat down and talked to Toya, there's a good chance that he still essentially goes down the same path. There's a good saying that I've heard before that I think the Todoroki household really shows, which is that "you can throw five people into a hole and they will all come out as different people." Everyone takes in and processes their circumstances differently and that's just kind of pre-baked into us.

Dakhran

I agree with a lot of points here, and yes Endeavor is a piece of shit and all, but once the babies start murdering, they’re not babies anymore, they are dangers to society that need a permanent stay in a cube at the bottom of Tartarus. Both Dabi and Shigaraki, and even Twice. Murder babies are not babies, you can feel sad about how they got that way, but it doesn’t excuse their actions or make them any less dangerous to keep alive and unrestrained.

If Alicia's dad didn't choose her mom to breed excellent children, then how come Alicia was born?

11:10 - 11:24 That whole sequence is *Haunting*. A handful of looks, a building crescendo of music, to the classic baby cry, with two *haunting* new expressions. We all know. We've always known. But it's still effective. Also, you tell them Alicia!! XD (15:30~ish?) I love Media analysis, and I find this episode is PACKED with stuff to chew on! And yet, you're so good at this, that you're still bringing up so much new stuff I hadn't even thought about. This is why I watch your stuff. That's why I'm here ;) 5-Year old Shoto ready to Fight GOD (Seriously, what else is a parent like Endeavour to a 5-year old?), while his siblings have "learned" to just stay down and wait out the storm, is such a twisted version "This kid has the heart of a Hero". And I love it. Ok. Rei talking about how Shoto "made friends in school ^^" to footage of Deku punching the SHIT out of Shoto, has sent me into a chuckling fit xD xD Literally, tears. Bakugo doing 60% of the humor in one scene XD Thank you. We all needed that.

Trevor Appel

Another thing to consider is that the mom isn't getting a break between children. Almost immediately after he saw the child was a "failure" he was working on getting her pregnant again.

LuxCrank

Not gonna lie. I kinda hated watching this reaction. No fault of Alicia's but the fact that she feels like she has to womensplain to the dump asses that argue and don't understand child psychology. Or even pay attention to the show.

I don’t really care about the Todorokis. I get that they want to give this information out, but I want to skip it.

Child Neglect = Child Abuse

Seafaringtaco

The tragic part was as much as Endeavor wanted Toya to have a good life and not try to be a hero just to hurt or kill himself in the process is that as such a successful hero, he had no idea how to do that, all he knows is heroing, and even says that all he can show Toya is the world of heroes. Honestly the saddest part.

John Souls

Selective breeding and eugenics are text book different, Alicia. Eugenics implies a lot more than just what Endeavor is doing, which is selective breeding (isolated, not on societal scale). Maybe you should read the definitions yourself before you so adamantly call people children and say that they don't know words when you yourself don't know it. Anyhow, great content like always. Didn't mean to be rude, just a little correction is all ;)
