True Stories: Wii Fit
Hello! Today unfortunately I had to work and haven’t had any time until now to do any writing and I’m completely burned out, but I’ve had this one memory on my mind for a while so I’ll share it!
Let me set the stage, this true story is about a friend of an older sibling of mine. Let’s call this friend Carley. At the time this story takes place I was still in high school, but Carley had just returned home from her freshman year of college. I’d always known Carley to be a pretty fit athlete, she was on the swim team in high school. Blonde hair, pretty face, slim features, very sweet and a little ditzy, I had a crush on her. I asked her to a dance in high school (soph-hop) and she was kind enough to go with me. But, I always got the feeling she thought she was out of my league and never took me seriously (In all honesty, she probably was haha). I took the hint and moved on with my affections after she left for college.
A year later, at the beginning of the summer, my older sibling came home from college for summer break and invited all their friends over, including Carley and half of their swim team friends. It was normal for me to hang out with my sibling and their friends when I didn’t have anything going on, so that’s exactly what I did on this fateful day.
It was nice seeing all the old faces again and hearing what everyone had been up to in college. Then Carley came over. She looked a little different than I remembered. She didn’t keep up with her sport in college and had instead taken up partying and drinking. She’d returned from her freshman year of college with a beer belly and a beer butt. All she talked about was how much of a tank she’d become at beer pong.
But this gathering wasn’t just about talking, catching up and reminiscing about old times. At this time the Nintendo Wii was all the rage, and everyone wanted to play wii sports, so that’s exactly what this large group of friends started doing (that is after everyone created their own Mii to play as).
It is worth noting that the Mii Carley created was a spitting image of what she’s looked like prior to entering college, very slim. It didn’t match her current bloated figure. I guess in her head she hadn’t internalized her freshman weight gain or maybe she thought it was temporary, or maybe she was in denial, I don’t know.
Anyway, we played Wii bowling, Wii Tennis, Wii boxing, and Wii baseball (nobody wanted to play wii golf). Wii sports was a lot of fun, but eventually, people got a little bored of that, and wanted to play something new.
Enter Wii fit. I am pretty sure it had come out earlier that winter. Nobody had played it, except me, but they’d almost all heard of it including Carley. After the notion of playing Wii fit was brought up, Carley was the first to shout out, “I’ve heard people have lost a lot of weight playing wii fit! Let me try!”
Maybe she did know she’d put on some weight and wanted to lose it after all? I mean, from what I remember she had a muffin top going on with her shorts and that well-fed tummy sticking out from under the hem of her shirt. How could she be in denial?
Anyway, for those of you that don’t know, for new Mii characters, you need to do a physical before playing wii fit, so Carley had to stand on the scale in front of everyone and weigh herself, see her bmi, and get a fitness rating by the Wii fit, as well as a wii fit fitness age. Once the wii fit learns your BMI it also changes your Mii’s appearance to be skinnier or fatter based on the outcome. Well, Carley stepped on the scale and it went up to about 155lbs, she was short, so this put her BMI in the overweight category. Her Mii avatar once skinny, blew up in size to be quite plump. (It’s also worth noting that wii fit asks you how much your clothes weigh and subtracts that from your weight total, Carley selected that her clothes weighed 4 pounds, even though she was only wearing tight-fitting shorts and a t-shirt.)
Clearly embarrassed, Carley blushed and looked at the number on the scale, muttering, “That’s a lot higher than I expected… Is this accurate??”
One of her sassy swim team friends laughed, and replied, “Oh it’s accurate. Maybe switch to lite beer, tank.”
People laughed, Carley was clearly embarrassed, but nobody gave her any crap about it after that (at least not to her face, as Carley struggled with doing some Wii fit fitness activities, I overheard two of her friends commenting on how much larger her butt had grown at some point). It was kind of a golden scenario for someone with my tastes. Weighing in is a big fan-service staple in WG stories, so is teasing, and exercise fails, and I got to see a weigh-in of a girl I found attractive who’d gained a beer belly during her freshman year of college. There is something about the vulnerability involved with the scale that I find interesting, there is a power dynamic there that might explain why people in this community tend to like weigh-ins and the like.
For anyone wondering what happened to Carley, it has been a long time since I’ve seen her. I’m not sure she ever lost all the weight. Last time I saw her she had lost the beer belly, but still looked a little thick compared to her time as a swimmer.
That’s all, this one was short and hopefully sweet. Does anyone else have a similar experience with wii fit? Do you agree with my theories about why weigh-ins are so popular in WG stories?
I’ll have a more substantial post ready by Wednesday.
Have a great day!
