Just a check-in to let y'all know that I'm still alive and very much working non-stop on YouTube content. The next video is a bit of a manifesto covering 3 interpretations or definitions of leverage, and how it has defined the world economy and (what I believe) has replaced capitalism. Oddly enough, this is one I started working on about 18 months ago after the last post-capitalism video but the script got so long that it qualified as a book. So the focus became writing a script that could accessibly visualize and explain underreported historic macroeconomic events, the math behind them, and how they explain the seemingly unexplainable events we read in the news every day. As usual, the writing, scripting, and monologue recording is filled with doubt and moments of being on the fence about even finishing the project, and then once I start editing, everything comes together and rejuvenates my excitement. I usually give myself an estimated week of editing, but this one requires so much visualization design and licensed historic footage that a week of editing amounted to less than 25% of the editing timeline being finished. That's my way of saying that I'm prioritizing quality over quantity and apologizing for a video taking a few weeks longer than normal. I also wanted to state my appreciation for this Patreon community. I'm constantly blown away by this unique setup that allows me to take on huge projects like this without needing to appeal to a news organization, sponsor, or editor.

I can't imagine what I'd be doing with these last 2 months without your support here.

We appreciate your quality over quantity mindset!

As someone who very much found your YouTube channel via your music, I have been just blown away by the last few years of your amazing content. Thank you sooo much for the work you do.

Jaret

Amazing! Appreciate the update but I trust you to make good stuff, don't feel like you have to justify it. The content speaks for itself. Excited to watch it when it's ready!

Ollie

I'm so glad that you get to take your time and produce really thoughtful and thought provoking content. I much prefer a well produced, longer bit of content that makes me think than anything else. Looking forward to it

Hayden K

I wouldnt mind a book tbh

NTHM

We love you, Benn. Your content is incredible, and we’re happy to wait.

About the script being so long it qualified as a book: I would absolutely read a book written by you, especially on economics!

Splungedude

I support you because of your quality. Take all the time you need.

Fynn

Thanks for choosing quality over anything else. It's really important to me and I have to say that your videos are one of the most high quality videos on YouTube. We should be thankful for your content.

Uncle Phil

I've noticed leverage in marketing, politics, religion etc. hmm. Interesting stuff Benn, I am here for the journey, that just so happens to be your life, and the things you create. I'd rather wait, than have you make any sacrifices.

Mike

Ohhhhh excited for this one. I was just talking to an economist friend about the billion leveraged dollars on spacex ETFs from their IPO and how unthinkable that would be not even very long ago. Can't wait!

Corlin

Thanks for the update, no rush. Take your time we are patient. Quality over quantity!

Arthur 'AJ' Jones

I'd rather have high-quality content that takes a while than low-quality slop. Thanks for doing what you do best!

Gabriel Jennings

I only have a few people I subscribe to on patreon but you are the only one I've never considered cancelling (other than a brief period when things were very lean) And the reason why is precisely because you prioritize quality Keep doing what you're doing, it's fantastic and I'm proud to have been able to make minimal financial contributions to it over the years

Collin

I don't have much time to watch TV or youtube, so I would much rather have a few quality videos than have videos on a regular schedule. Thank you for pursuing interesting topics and taking time to investigate them!

kuraz

you're one of the good people

Sonica

Looking forward to the video but a book sounds like a great idea too !

Kolibri

You're doing something we all need, without this kind of work I don't think I would have had the capacity to mobilize at all, you've made me and many other people I know feel heard, and compiled information that would otherwise be inaccessible to most of us. So much thanks <3

redconfetti

Totally understand the doubt and hesitation. It's unfortunately part of the process for many, one we sludge through and then continue on as we can

Mark Singer

I'll just say for giggles that I was skimming my Pateron message feed and for a confusing but very provocative moment conflated yours with the one from ContraPoints that was just above it.

Dan

As one small vote, please take the time you need. No need to apologize! I think I found your channel starting with a video about animal hearing and then enjoyed the variety of technology and surveillance videos. And some of the music ones too ;)

narF

Looking forward to that! Your video on capitalism was one of the reasons why I got involved with Socialist Alternative, so that we work in dismantling this rotten system! 💪

narF

well, that plus the 🔥🔥 speeches from Kshama Sawant! 🤩

Mox_Nox

Hey there, there is a reason why i'm supporting you on here. Take your time! I'm happy to watch whenever you feel ready :)

Derp . (ArcticOne)

That's why I support you - because you do things properly, and make things that might actually make a difference for the world

Jim Crandall

Thanks for putting that time in. I'm very interested in your take on leverage in our world, where we now have our first trillionaire.

parkat Gaming

hell yeah looking forward to this and the Tommy G collab that sounded like it is going to be a banger 🙏

K

The word is definitely being thrown around more and more frequently... not that it wasn't already being done, but it's just beyond absurd now. I will be happy to see your work talking about it in a critical light.

AllTAllShade

Please don’t apologise for giving a shit about quality over quantity! Most of us (if not all!) are here BECAUSE we appreciate that about your work!

Dr Qua

Words can't even begin to describe how excited I am about this one. That was still one of my favorite videos of all time that you did, so good! I really don't mind waiting because I prefer the kind of quality that only comes from spending a lot of time on something and caring about it. 💛

Tonverfall Studio

Just watched it, and 🤯😱 Given I'm kind of intrigued by the '70s, I had no idea the energy crisis and trucker culture elements were directly tied to Nixon axing the dollar's index to rare metals. Very enlightening and very grim.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FZy1lBNykA Good stuff Benn! I would love to hear more about what you meant by “help political campaigns that are willing to push back”!! There are a number of very competitive but winnable house races that could use the help!!!

Paul S.

This is a good one for sure. I sent it directly to at least a dozen friends…

Bin Martig

not good with words, but i want to express my sincere gratitude for you putting these ideas into words and sharing them with us. it's probably not the nicest thing to hear, but: your videos don't make me feel great, yet i almost feel like it's my duty to watch them. they help me understand things that i am either not smart enough or not interested in enough to work out myself, but that i feel are crucial to understand to make the right choices in the "the regrets of the dying" kind of way. thank you so much for being this human, benn! -bin

Tyler Doering

Your video that came out today is I believe, some of your most important work yet, very well done. Great stuff!

Ali Abbas

Thanks for this video Benn - being able to contribute to your work makes me feel a bit better about being used as leverage.

Keith Hare

2 things happened today. We found TWO wasps' nests in different parts of our house. I watched your latest (brilliant) video. Gone to bed suitably unnerved.

Alex82

Just watched this today and got me to join the Patreon.

Boh

Really great video.

Gim kek

This is the video that got me to finally join your patreon. I watched it on my breakfast and lunch break at my hospital job and it gave me a lot to think about.

Mark Stellingworth

Amazing video. Have you looked at the work of Yanis Varoufakis and technofeudalism? Also - can you provide a list of references for your research? Like a primer on late stage capitalism ?

Guenevere Schwien

Thanks Benn, I took my time to get to your new video, and made space for it this evening and it was great! I totally agree and have been in my life also trying to figure out how to use my time for the things I want to do, and not so much the things I have to do to survive.

Sy Lighthill

Amazing video, Lucian and I loved it! I hope it goes viral af

This was a fantastic video; very much worth the wait! I'll copy here my comment on YT: A great example of exploitation of leverage: Adam Ragusea's recent video, "Save Farms Not Farmers," points out that the rise in ICE work to remove migrant farmers is not accidentally timed. It coincides with the expansion of a legal migrant worker program that ties migrants to farms, so they essentially become like indentured servants. Currently, a migrant worker who is mistreated could simply quit and move to another farm; workers in the growing legal migrant worker program not only are tied to a particular farm for employment, they also have to give employers so much personal information (including about their families in their home countries) that some farmers use the info as leverage to keep them effectively indentured. This program was the prototype for the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program, which is often criticized for doing something similar for tech workers—tying their immigration status to a specific employer, which lets employers keep wages down. On a less extreme level (barely), the US health care system ties one's health security to an employer, creating significant leverage for the employer, not to mention huge opportunity cost for the broader economy (from people with independent business ideas who cannot afford to risk loss of health care). So we can see examples of this leverage idea practically everywhere we look in the US economy.

Seconding - references would be good and would give the argument more weight
