Your initial impression of musicals isn't far off the truth for early to mid 20th century musicals. A lot of them were plays where musical numbers were used to sort of emphasize the emotion of what was happening in the plot, but the story itself wasn't usually told specifically through music. But after Gershwin introduced more jazz elements into musical theatre, and after The Who created a rock-opera album, "Tommy", in 1969, things began to shift. More modern music began to make its way into musical theatre. For example, "The Wiz", which is The Wizard of Oz with a black cast and told through R&B music. Or "Rent", which has rock music as its musical numbers. "Grease" of course features 50s-style rock and roll music. These musicals still use music to emphasize a moment or emotion, rather than to tell the actual story, so they're musicals in the sense you describe as being your impression of musicals, but with more modern music. A lot of other modern "musicals" (such as Hamilton) are technically operas, where the storytelling is done entirely through song. Most of the most popular musicals since the 80s have actually been operas: The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Miss Saigon (which is effectively an adaptation of an opera called Madame Butterfly) were all performed with little or no dialogue.

Hamilton, so I'm sitting in my hospital room finally getting to see your reaction, so glad your enjoying it. I'm sure there's a lot more I could say but I'm sure everyone else has covered it all, I just can't wait for act 2

PhoenixWing513

A fun little fact about the guy that played King George in Hamilton: he is also the voice of Kristoff from the movie Frozen!!

Meg Athey
>>97152898

A year later —- the actor who was King George III also was in Glee on TV

MoonBaby

New around here, so just seeing this - I'm a die-hard Hamilton fan, and also in love with Daveed Diggs (Lafayette/Jefferson) and his group Clppng. You should definitely check out their work. https://www.youtube.com/@clppng

Chriss The FloorStuffie

John on a box or on the street is exactly how they delivered information & news bk then.

Chriss The FloorStuffie

Ok so the King is played by Jonathan Groff. His friendship w/Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) is an amazing hot mess. Their videos together are full of crackhead behavior. Also Lin-Manuel used to be a substitute teacher so it's only fitting he write a whole historical lesson as a Broadway Play & since he loves rap & hip-hop the music style choice makes sense too. Some of his goals were to make learning interesting again & show that there is so much more than what is contained in a textbook

Breanne

Oh? Should I watch this for the first time with you?? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I've only heard good things about it

SugaIsMyPetRock

I’ve seen this so many times I can recite it word for word from start to finish. It’s an absolute masterpiece & if you’d like I will send you some links that break down the lyrics & rhyme schemes in a way that will blow your mind even more. Lin Manuel bought an autobiography of Hamilton at the airport to read on vacation & after reading a few chapters he saw Hamilton’s story as a hip hop story. Just like rappers who came from the hood & used a pen & paper to write lyrics & make a name for themselves, Hamilton does the same. He is a frigging genius. 🫶🏻💜 I was beyond happy to see this on your list the other day!

SugaIsMyPetRock
>>97089672

Yep! That’s where the phrase “they are on their soapbox again” comes from. 🫶🏻💜

answering your questions as I watch! 1. yes musicals are normally sung through on stage, but also it varies and depends on what type of musical it is. Some of them like to talk in-between, sometimes they have very short talking time and sometimes just like Hamilton its all sung through i.e you can listen to the entire musical through just their songs and know the plot. There are over 40 songs in Hamilton. That being said even if it varies depending on which musical it is, all of them are longer than Disney movies and have more songs so you should expect at least 80% sung through content in actual musicals. 2. Hamilton and another musical called in the heights also by lin Manuel miranda are probably the only musicals that incorporate hip hop and rap so heavily. So yes it is it also unique in the musical scene! 3. lin manuel miranda (the guy who plays Alexander Hamilton) wrote the entire musical 4. lin actually started writing this musical in 2006 so it took a long time. Fun fact he actually performed the opening number Alexander Hamilton at the White House in 2008. Its on YouTube still and its funny because people laughed when he explained the concept of hip hop meets founding fathers.

Ahhh Heck Yes Jenny!!! Thank you for all this info! So Iin Manuel Wrote this! I have to deep dive on him! he's a great actor as well and apparently the guy can drop bars too! lol I am shook! I believe thats the video im reacting to today the White House one!

Jenny V
>>97104566

Oh cool!! I do love the cast White House performances. The one I reference isn’t with the cast it’s this one! https://youtu.be/WNFf7nMIGnE I’m looking forward to the cast ones as well though they’re so good

DreamTeam002

omg i love that youre reacting to this! its been so long since ive seen/listened to it lol. I cannot wait for the second part i need it nowwwwww <3

SueBee

Jenny covered A TON above, which is awesome. This definitely isn’t the first show with rap incorporated (neither was In the Heights), but it’s definitely the first of its kind on multiple levels. I worked on Broadway for years, so if you have any questions you think of after the fact, feel free to hit me up. I’m a huge nerd about the inner workings of shows. Also, Genius is pretty great for getting some context and wordplay that happens in the lyrics throughout the show. And I can point you to podcasts with both Lin and Alex Lacamore (the arranger and he is fascinating when he talks about his craft and this show). As much as I love Lin and think he’s incredible, Hamilton wouldn’t be the show it is without Lac.

Ara

Hamilton! 😬😁🎉🎶

Pebbles Ho

Hamilton!!!! Never really was interested/or seen musicals or Broadway. When COVID hit and they couldn't perform I actually looked forward to Hamilton hitting Disney plus. I guess from hearing all the hype. That day it came out I subscribed to Disney plus and watched this a good 100 times. Soo freaking good. And all of the songs are so catchy. The king omg Ladee da da daaaa.. oii that will take forever to get out now I would sing them all day. Thank you for giving this a chance.

SHANNON SLUTZKY

John only for you would I pay for patreon so I could re-watch this fabulous musical. I love the crazy king so much. I believe he voiced Christof in frozen. If only history class was done this way, it’d be so much more interesting 😂

Lisa Hood

Most musicals are like this, except for the rap. The staging, the music, the emotion, the dancing, the acting, the story telling, happens in every live musical. And in case no one told you yet, Lin Manuel Miranda, who plays Hamilton wrote the entire thing, with a writing partner. Words, music etc. he is a genius!!

Ericka

Lin Manuel is a genius indeed. I love everything that I have seen/heard him put out. Hamilton, In the Heights, Vivo, Moana and Encanto! I now trust anything is worth watching if his name is attached.

Jane Ramirez

It never gets old. I've watched this whole movie twice, and hundreds of YouTube videos of individual songs, over and over and over, and I never get tired of it. I'm still in awe. Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica); Daveed Diggs (Lafayette in the first act, Thomas Jefferson in the second); Chris Jackson (George Washington); and the entire Original Cast are all incredible vocalists. But Lin Manuel Miranda is truly a genius. Sorry, I'll stop now. But see? This stuff is SO good that it never, ever gets old. Thanks for doing these reaction videos for us. This was a treat. Can't wait for part 2.

Yo!SamitySam!

Hamilton is amazing. There are so many hidden gems in it, you’ll need to rewatch it or check out some fan videos to find out all the things that were happening in the background that you missed. Lin Manuel Miranda really is a genius. Stage musicals are mostly singing. The amount of work, practice, coordination and talent to do the show live is insane. The band is usually under the stage. Loved your reaction.

FleetstreetVicomte
>>97104566

Lin, as well as a few others in this cast are freestyle rappers and have been for decades. Look up Freestyle Love Supreme. As for Lin, he also wrote In the Heights - another musical as well as music for Disney films Moana and Encanto. He is curretly just missing an Oscar to complete his EGOT status as he has multiple Grammys, Tonys and Emmys. He's been nominated for an Oscar twice, but haven't won yet.

FleetstreetVicomte

This is why I never believe it when people say they don't like musicals. "musical" is such a wide genre, and I truly believe everyone can find a musical they like. Here are just some of the sub categories I usually use: - Jukebox: a show using the backcatalogue of a specific music artist/band like We Will Rock You (Queen), Mamma Mia (ABBA), Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli) - Disney: family friendly, usually a mix of dialogue and songs, both movies and stage shows like Lion King, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast - Mega musicals: usually fully sung-through, big sets, epics, examples being Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera (and most Andrew Lloyd Webber shows really), Sweeney Todd - Smaller more intimate shows - basicly anything written by the likes of Stephen Sondheim and Jonathan Larson - The Golden Age: older, classic shows like Sound of Music, Singin' in the Rain, Wizard of Oz - Cult classics: smaller more experimental shows like Rocky Horror Show, Cabaret, - Dance musicals: shows with a big focus on dance: Footloose, Hairspray, Flashdance - Movie adaptations: stage shows adapted from big movie classics: Ghost, Back to the Future, Pretty Woman There's something for everyone for sure, and these categories doesn't even cover the various music styles used. You'll find everything from rap to ballads to jazz to rock - and often in the same show like you've seen with Hamilton

Teri Kinney-Bishop

I’m going home to watch now! It is the best! I have seen it on Disney about 20 times with watch parties. Even saw it in Chicago couple years ago.

Jordan Kisling

Your reaction to the first half was awesome. I can't wait to see the second half. If you want to look at some other Musicals I would definitely suggest Les Miserlerables, Phantom of the Opera and my absolute favorite Sweeny Todd

Zeus Max

HAMILTON! I LIVE FOR HAMILTON! After I watched it I forced everyone I know to watch it and then they did the same to everyone they know because it is not at all what I expected from a musical! The guy who plays Hamilton created the whole show and Moana the Disney movie, King George does the voice in Frozen, Angelica plays in Altered Carbon…the list goes on!

johnreaveslive
>>97152898

LOL FOR REAL!!!! Thank you so much for being here with me! and I know Right!? I, instead of having this for history class, had MRS BATES! She was super mean, and really didnt like little metal skater kid Reaves lol but I think secretly she did! MRS BATES IF YOURE READING THIS, I STILL LOVE YOU!!! ( LOL ) You are freakin Awesome Shannon! Thank you again!

johnreaveslive
>>97157353

I am honestly still floored at how in-depth the lyrics are to this! I actually have been reading them while on a treadmill the last two days LOL! Im a total lyric nerd! Lin absolutely crushed it! and if all musicals are like this... I might for sure check out more!

johnreaveslive
>>97223033

King George was SOOOO funny lol When he Scream/Spit I lost it!! LOL I've shown that to everyone now and hopefully can get them to watch the whole thing now! Thank you for being here Zues!!! for real it means the world!

johnreaveslive
>>97213031

Jordan! thank you so much! for real I cant wait to watch the second part! And for sure would love to watch those others since I was COMPLETELY wrong about musicals LOL pleasantly so might I add! I'm happy to admit I was wrong about this! :)

Ericka
>>97158603

In the heights was the first musical he wrote the music and lyrics for. It was recently turned into a movie that I saw in theaters. There are a lot of cast from Hamilton that are in the movie too. It is a celebration of Latino culture in my opinion.

Eva

This is the first time I saw it without subtitles, my English is not good enough to understand more than half of what they are saying, but luckily I’ve seen this like 10 times so I could follow along with you 😅 There is so much info online analyzing every bar and chord, there is a lot of meaning that I didn’t catch in the music and some aspects of the performance even, it is masterful from start to finish! I would say in a way some of the things that seem to be so amazing to you here are actually not uncommon for musicals, like the general energy, the insane talent of the performers and the way the stage is set up and used, so you might enjoy others too. The music style or genre can vary greatly from musical to musical though. It is also not very usual to have such a high quality recording of the actual stage production, rather than a movie that is based on the musical. I love that they made this and thus made it accessible to so many more people that otherwise would never have had the chance to see it (including me). On another note, it’s ok to really like the King, he is a fan favorite. Jonathan Groff is amazing. The whole cast is just a dream honestly. Anyways I’m glad you’re enjoying it, it completely blew me away as well the first time I saw it. Have fun! I only just joined your Patreon because I really wanted to watch the Suga/RM video with you, but then I saw this and was so happy 😁 Thank you John!

I actually need someone to react to the 25th anniversary recording of phantom of the opera I cannot believe that no one has reacted to the full thing its such a shame

Jenny V
>>97183500

I would like to barge in and add one of my favourite musicals hadestown as well which is honestly as unique sound wise as all the genres you listed. It's such a good jazz, r&b, folk influenced musical. I would love to recommend it more to people but it's not as accessible as the ones listed above since there's no official recording or movie. still though one of the best ongoing Broadway musicals right now!

Ms. Chuck Terry
>>97136873

I recommend Adam Savage’s vlogs about backstage at Hamilton SF too. Especially the one related to the musicians and sound production.

Letty

Hiii!! I came here because I found one reaction in your youtube channel, and I love Hamilton so much! I would love that my english was better, in that way I could write all what I think haha Hamilton is the first musical musical (I don't count the movies) that I saw, and from the start, it got me. I just fall in love, it's my safest place. And I'm actually planning a trip to New York because I need to watch Hamilton there! I really enjoyed your reaction, so now I'm expecting for the part 2 haha... Thank you!! Greetings from Chile.

sarah

lin manuel miranda played hamilton and wrote it. it's one of my favorite musicals. there are soo many great ones. rent was my first favorite. i saw hadestown a couple weeks ago. musicals are my jam.

sarah
>>97286714

if you can, do it! it’s incredible! even all the way back in aisle u, it was so good!

Raye

Hamilton! Hamilton was unique in being the first musical to use rap as an integral part of the show.

Elizabeth Williams

Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the lyrics for the entire show. He also plays Hamilton. He's written a bunch of stuff for Disney (Moana and Encanto)

Sidney

Hamilton 😜💕💕🤩

Joyelizabeth

Here for Hamilton!!! And yes, musicals are for the most part, a lot more beautiful and well put together than a lot of people realize. Would definitely recommend Les Miserables, Miss Saigon (you liked the emotion shown in this one? The emotion is off the charts in that one) and maybe Moulin Rouge (jukebox musical) or Hadestown

johnreaveslive
>>97332849

Just finished the second part of Hamilton and should have it on here soon, and for real. that was a game changer for me! I LOVED IT!!! going to post a poll on here soon for what my next musical should be to check out! I'll put those on the list for sure!

Joyelizabeth

There's a ProShot of Miss Saigon but you can easily react to bootlegs of other ones as well on Patreon, because even if they are not ProShot so many musicals are THAT good

Lisa Hood
>>97332849

Ooh great idea! I also like Haddestown, Chicago, Rent, Book of Mormon, Come From Away ❤️, Rent, Kinky Boots, Sweet Charity, and Wicked. All are VERY different, some are more traditional, some are hilarious, some are more modern, some (like Come From Away) are based on a true story, others are purely fantasy, but all are full of heart and rich with story and music and carry all the things you seemed to enjoy about Hamilton…..minus the rap. :-)

Laura Jacobs

You will get 1 more King George song in act 2

Laura Jacobs

I also do recommend that you watch it a 2nd time with the captions on, I realize by doing that you catch a lot more, I think that turning off the captioning was a great idea for the first time because otherwise you might lose/miss some of the parts that the stage turns

Megan the Librarian

Can't wait for Part 2! Would love to see you react to Come From Away. It's on Apple TV+ and it's like this one in that it's a filmed version of the stage musical. It's very different from this, but it'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, it'll restore you faith in humanity! It takes place in Newfoundland Canada so the music is sort of Celtic inspired. The band stays on the side of the stage where you can see them and they come out and interact with the actors in some scenes. ...Plus it's half as long as Hamilton! 😄

Megan the Librarian

Oh, and you should definitely go to YouTube and watch a side-by-side video of Helpless and Satisfied. They way they synced the choreography in those two songs is hands down one of the most genius thing I've ever seen on stage!

Anjeannette Schnetz

Hamilton! LMM is a GENIUS 🤯. How he could read a long academic biography and think “this guy is a rapper” and then put together this incredible history lesson with incredible songs is just next level. Thank you for doing this, can’t wait for part 2 🙌🙌🙌🙌

thebakingfool

HAMILTON!!!! I’m so glad you are reacting to this!!! Looking forward to part 2.

Aubrey Mayes

Hamilton!!! I just found this today and just saw that part 2 was posted and I’m so stoked! Thanks for taking a chance on Hamilton! It’s my favorite! I’m actually using my Hamilton mug to drink coffee as I watch this. Too obsessed? Eh… maybe. Lol.

Conny

I have always loved going to watch musicals live, from huge world-wide hits to small local neighbourhood productions and anything in between. By now musicals are using a lot of different genres for their music. I also enjoy the fact that vocals, chorus and band are live played, every day. And being there in person you feel the band, just like if you were at a big rock concert for example. I would say there's two distinct categories of musicals, though. There are those which use original music, where the songs are part of telling the story and driving the story forward. And then there are those which use a catalogue of existing songs and package them up inside a story. Hamilton is the first type. Something like Mama Mia, or We Will Rock You would be the second type (because they use the catalogue of ABBA or Queen songs, respectively).

EKMontie

I'm so glad you reacted to Hamilton! It's a great show with amazing lyrics/music! I grew up watching musicals, and I can say this wasn't like what I grew up with, but modern musicals have adapted to the times. I think you would also enjoy The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q, although I don't know if those exist anywhere as videos to react to, but if you ever have the chance to see a touring company for them live, DO IT!

Erin

This is my comfort food, watching people experience Hamilton for the first time. It is food for my soul ❤️

johnreaveslive
>>97385638

I dont blame you! lol I feel like its a breath of fresh air for me with what I was expecting musicals to be. I am so happy to have shared this with you!

Angie Shaw
>>97158603

He stated writing In the Heights while in college - The story is set over the course of three days, involving characters in the largely Dominican American neighborhood of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan, New York City. Lin grew up in Washington Heights- in a way it’s his love letter to his neighborhood and the city. He won the Tony for best original score and it won best musical in 2005. Hamilton won 11 awards (2nd most ever) including best musical in 2016. HBO has the movie adapted from the show- and Anthony Rapp (Laurens/Phillip) plays the main character (Lin played it on Broadway). Chris Jackson (Washington) played Bennie on Broadway and he and Lin have small parts in the movie.

Angie Shaw
>>97383965

Yes Book of Mormon and Avenue Q were groundbreaking too. And Come From Away is available to watch on Apple tv (it was filmed live before it closed)- it’s 90 minutes straight through and the cast plays multiple characters. It’s the telling of the true story about this little town, Gander, on Newfoundland that had 38 planes (roughly 7000 people) diverted to their airport when 9/11 occurred. This town of around 9000 took care of all these people for a week or so.

Evelyn Pacio

Lin Manuel Miranda did write all the songs of the musical.

thisismaria27
>>97183500

I echo that sentiment. Also musicals are getting broader all the time in terms of music styles, stage, casting and writing. That's why I think everyone can find something, it's just that most people are only introduced to like 1-2 musicals as a kid and base the whole genre on that. That being said Hamilton broke a LOT of barriers in what's possible on broadway and has made taking bigger risks a little easier.

Janel Davis

10:14 Oh man, you gotta watch Lin Manuel freestyle 🤣 Look it up on YouTube, you will not regret it!

Ms. Chuck Terry
>>97354069

“Come From Away” is like kids putting on a show in a barn if compared to “Hamilton”. But I cried and cried and laughed and danced. It’s like Gander itself. Might not look like much, but has the biggest heart. ❤️

mahjacat

Lin & Daveed are members of Freestyle Love Supreme, an Improvisational Rap Group that did shows on Broadway, as well as smaller venues https://youtu.be/2ZcEJRVcZwM

mahjacat

The first 10 minutes is just you doing Dry Spit Takes and I Love It!

Cassi Perry

You find moments like this in the political campaign world but usually on the left. In your part of the world that would Bernie Saunders camp or equivalent. Back rooms in pubs where people are dreaming of something different and how to achieve it.

Cassi Perry

Me too. This thing rewrites you. I experience life as pre and post Hamilton.

Saiyasha

In my opinion Hamilton is simulatiously the best and worst Musical to start with. It is one of the best musicls of all time, in my Opinion, but that also means the Bar set _realy_ high right from the Beginning, plus it isn't very typical when it comes to Musicals, so people who start with hamilton may have a bit of a shock when they see other Musicals. That said, I recommend: Hadestown, Six, Beetlejuice and Heathers for a bit more modern Musicals and Into the woods and Sweeny Todd for some classics. Also Cats can be really fun, but you have to be able to get into the mood for it. For all of the three more modern once you'll probably have to go with OSTs or Animatics (Youtube videos where people have drawn their own stuff for the scenes) Since there are no filmed stage adaptations like for Hamilton. For Into the Woods thee is a really good ffull Version on Youtube and for Sweeny Todd I reccomend the 2001 in Concert Version with Patti LuPone, it is also on YT. I personally like the sound of Angela Landsbury even more, but there are no good full Videos with her as Mr. Lovett

Saiyasha

This Musical has great rewatch value. There are so many details that you can't pick up on on the first go round, like for instance Burr sings "Fools who run their Mouth of wind up dead" and the one who stepd in the next second is John Laurence - who will die at the end of Act 1. Also there is an Actress called "The Bullet" She is the one that gets "killed" afterKing Georges first song. Afterwards, whomever she touches, dies. You will see she touches Laurence and later Phillip and shortly before te End Hamilton himslef and a few times there are very close calls with her were someone _almost_ touches her.

Sam

Lin Manuel Miranda, who plays Hamilton, wrote all the songs it’s off a book by Ron Chernow

Sam

Perhaps you’d like to check out Lin-Manuel’s first musical called in the Heights.

Gina

You probably have enough responses on the musical question, but I’m gonna give my two cents anyway… :) Are all musicals like this? Yes and no. Rap? Nah. Not in this style anyway. Do musicals have deeper meanings with complex compositions? Yes, however, not every single one accomplishes this. Jukebox musicals, shows featuring existing pop tunes, are not likely to have a lot of substance, but there are a couple high quality ones, in my opinion. Another question you asked was about unique or odd stories and approaches — this is not common but not necessarily rare. Stephen Sondheim’s shows, for one, are MOSTLY oddities. A few of his: Sweeney Todd (murderous barber), Pacific Overtures (the westernization of Japan, done as a kabuki-style production), and Assassins (those who have or attempted to kill American Presidents). There are other non-Sondheim shows that subverted expectations of musicals, too, but I’ll stop here. :)

Mbee

I know it’s kinda late but…Hamilton. Just watched part one getting ready for part 2. My 1st time too, by the way. :). Love it!!!!

MrHolbyta

It’s been delightful watching you discover the power of musicals. Introducing music allows for a couple of things. First, it can condense an emotional journey or complex event into the equivalent of a montage in film. The emotional journeys of Helpless and Satisfied and the narrative complexity of Yorktown are great examples of this. Second, it allows multiple characters to coherently speak at the same time. In dialogue that’s just noise, but A Farmer Refuted draws on them hitting the same word with different intentions but at the same time to drive the conflict. Finally, quoting music from earlier in the show (the Reprise) brings with it all the context that has followed that music throughout. There are absolutely musicals of the form you’re thinking of: where there is a play or film going on when suddenly everyone breaks into song for no discernible reason. Rodgers and Hammerstein and others in the Golden Age of musicals did a lot of this. Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Boublil and Schoenberg were some of the leading voices in telling more serious stories which led to Hamilton and others like it. Even some of the lighter-hearted modern musicals where people break into song are more complex, emotionally, structurally, and intellectually. Matilda the Musical comes to mind. Keep digging in. I’m looking forward to experiencing your journey with you.

Tiffany

Lin Manual Miranda is a national treasure
