People have asked me how he would have ended up there and I think from the beginning I said "he swam" and I wasn't lying. Mostly. I imagine he went through quite a bit of ways to end up where he is but still. But Mack was always sort of an anti-mermaid anyway. "Does he have any magical powers?" Nah. "Does he live longer or have legs or some weird biology?" Naw. "How will he reveal himself to Felix and how will he react??" He just knows. "How did he get to this lake in the mountains?" He swam and crawled and clawed his way there. Pretty mundane.

And yes I actually checked the IRL equivalent of where this comic is placed and yes, it is technically possible to swim to it.

Flynn

Good research man. Extra point for this tenacious fishy boi

Ari

i dont know that id call zooming in and following a river on google maps research though

Flynn

That's the exact definition of research! I'm not asking you to claw your way through that path yourself xD Unless....?

Pravvus

Oof. I knew the cute stuff had to end. Still hurts T_T

Sydney Pittner

As always, this is one of the best parts of my week. Especially right now as I deal with health complications. I love the comic and I appreciate your talent. Thank you!!

Melita_H

If only this had existed when I was a small child... I spent a great deal of time on Fontana Lake back then, and I used to imagine what if there were merpeople there. If I'd read this, I could've kept the hope alive longer. XD But anyway, goodness, poor Mack. >.< Long, lonely, arduous journey. :/

BetZenBac

That last panel.... So close yet so far away from each other in that moment.

ziskeit

Oh no the moment of truth 😨

Ari

Thank you for not calling me out every time I say this is in TN and not NC. I just kinda nudged it a bit. But hey, who's to say he's not in there.

Ari

I hope it's nothing too serious and that you get well soon.

Ari

Unless... I probably could though. It's actually not that far.

Ari

There's still plenty of comic.

Melita_H

Haha, well, I mean, it's practically in Tennessee, so it's fine. :p It's like... maybe 10 miles away, I think? I'm not great with local geography, and it's confusing anyway because mountains, but yeah, it's close, so no worries. :p Plus, I mean, it does come from the Little Tennessee River, so there's that too. XD And the dam was originally meant to help with the network going to power ALCOA stuff and Oak Ridge (or... something like that... I should really know this more decisively >.>)... So yeah, there's plenty of Tennessee involved, haha, so you're good. XD But yeah, also you did say it's not exactly that anyway, so they could be anywhere you want them to be~ I just like to keep to the idea that they're in the lake I grew up at. ♡

Neli

The next page is either really sweet or full drama 😱

Ari

Yeah, I never said it was that lake. (It is.) I believe most of the Little Tennessee River flows through NC. Meanwhile a large section of the actual Tennessee River in the state is called Kentucky Lake for some inexplicable reason. Names.

Melita_H

Yeah, tbh the Little Tennessee being primarily in NC confused the heck out of me as a kid, haha. I had a lot of intense discussions with my parents like "why did they name it like that if it's not in Tennessee?!" "Well, because it's a tributary of the Tennessee River" "But... but... it's not like all tributaries are named like that, right? Why'd they have to make it so confusing! >.< *pant pant* ...Is... is at least *some* of it in Tennessee?" "A little..." "...okay, well that's good at lea---wait there's a *not* little Tennessee River? Is *that* one in Tennessee, at least?" "Mostly..." <-- Not even kidding, this happened, like, once every couple of years for a while, haha. I already had trouble reconciling the fact that you could go like 10 miles on the highway in either direction from our house and end up at the same lake (which you can't see or quickly get to from the house, btw, since there's a mountain on either side... it's a weirdly shaped lake...), so the little Tennessee not being much in actual Tennessee was a source for much @.@ in my kid brain that was no good with small scale geography. ^^;; But! Regardless, it has Tennessee in the name, so close enough. :p

Diego P

So that's why he's so buff

Thingymabob

Uh oh, I see drama. But what page is he referring to again? So I can refresh the memory with the context.

Chateau Adib

I love the focus pull on the last panel. I don't know if you really call it that if there's no camera but it's really effective. Also what if he just stayed with Felix...

Spiral

I love this so much, Ari. Everything about it is amazing. You have even inspired me to write my own aquatic romance story! So thanks for all your work!

Ralend

Hey Ari, can you help confirm if I understand this? If you don't want to, because of spoilers, that's cool too. Mack is from the ocean. Mack swam up river. Mack came across a dam, bypassed it, kept swimming upstream. Mack came across another, bypassed it, kept going. Met Felix, and now is heading back downstream? Do I understand this right?

Ari

i would imagine he would take a lot of twists and turns upstream and downstream whichever way would help him go forward. id also imagine he came from downstream off the mountain into the lake which is why he couldnt easily go back the way he came. they would be going downstream now but mack wouldnt know how far inland he is or how far the ocean is he just wants to keep going forward.

Ari

ayy thank you. and good luck with yours.

Ari

well then thered be no CONFLICT

Ari

i assume talking about dropping him off. one of the last pages of chapter 4

Chateau Adib

okay but also as a professional conflict avoider i have no problem with that

Ralend

he came from downstream off the mountain? Ari, are you confusing downstream with upstream? Upstream is towards higher elevation. Downstream is towards lower elevations.

Ari

yeah just a lot of bad wording. i meant heading downstream in relation to where he was at the time towards the lake. coming from upstream into the lake.

Thingymabob

Sorry, should have clarified. But yes that was the part I was referring to. Thank you for the reference!
