Hey all! Sorry for the late update post this month, I've been moving to a new apartment and haven't had internet for a couple weeks (I know this sounds like a fanfiction author's note, but it's true.) But fear not, I have been working on my Wrong movie catchup video. I've got it all filmed, have done my first editing pass, and now just need to edit clips in. One obstacle is that I can't seem to find copies of the 3 most recent Wrong movies from any of my """usual sources""", so I have to screen record them myself. Which is fine, but just a little time consuming. However, the video is just a scant 20 minutes long, so it shouldn't take me too long to finish. It'll definitely be out by the end of the month. Thanks for your patience!

In addition to that, I know I made it sound like Hello Dolly was next on the list, and I do still plan to make that video, but recently I've actually been getting into finally planning a video on my favorite weird bad movie, Speedway Junky. I've always wanted to share it with my audience but love the film so much that I haven't really known where to start. A big part of why it fascinates me so is because it's tricky to articulate what is so strange and funny about it. But I'm excited to tackle that!

I'd love to make it a true deep dive and try to reach out to some of the cast/crew involved, but so far it's proving difficult. The director's only online presence seems to be Facebook, and his messages are turned off. Worse yet, Jesse Bradford hasn't even seen the DM I sent him on Instagram. Not to mention some of the other leads of the film (Jordan Brower, Jonathan Taylor Thomas) have since retired from acting, making them virtually impossible to track down. I'll keep trying. Maybe I can start paying for IMDB Pro again. I only wish June were longer, because this would be a great pride month video. A lot of the intrigue of the film, in my opinion, concerns how gay/not gay the story/characters/director are.

I just rewatched the director's commentary today, and I'm going to start working on a plot recap soon, which I think will be the first section of the video (assuming most people probably aren't going to click off the video to go watch the movie in its entirety on Tubi.) That said, if you want to watch it, now is the time!

On a personal level, I've decided to make it a fangirl summer. A healing-your-inner-14 year-old-summer. By that I mean I'm rewatching Heated Rivalry, a show I'd previously only watched while sick in bed with the flu, out of obligation to the First Respodcast Patreon, and thought was fine, but not much to write home about. I'm trying to really savor it this time. I'm re-reading Ngozi Ukazu's Check Please, the gay hockey media *I* grew up with. I'm rewatching Eddie and the Cruisers, a movie I've only known for a year, but is so palpably my jam and that I dream of rewriting into the torturous gay yearn-fest it was meant to be. I've even been revisiting ships and fanfiction I used to enjoy as a tween. Tumblrina summer! What are you guys reading and watching these days?

Thank you for another month of support! Video coming soon!

i am so excited for the upcoming projects! waiting excitedly for Hello Dolly whenever you're ready! currently reading: Oscar Wars - i have been on a pop culture history kick this year with my reading just finished watching: The Boroughs - imo it took everything i personally liked from Stranger Things season 1 but added more charming set design and all the older actors i like. denis o'hare and bill pullman in particular

Jane Mulcahy

Oh wow I totally forgot about The Boroughs existing! I don't have Netflix anymore but I'm glad to hear it was actually good

omg check please!!!!!!!!! what a webcomic. i remember the author saying there was a live action version in the works, and now with heated rivalry becoming a Huge Massive Fucking Success, i wonder if that will get expedited!!!!! one can only hope. excited for your fangirl summer—we should all aspire to be as smart as you for that. excited for speedway junky! i’ve never heard of it but you make everything accessible so i will be waiting on bated breath. happy pride!!!!

Erin Nye

Oh my gosh, Check Please! I haven't thought about that comic in years; I used to follow the author on tumblr back in the day. Gotta go do a re-read, thanks for the reminder!

Jane Mulcahy

I'm pretty sure I recently saw a post from the author saying it had been optioned (which doesn't mean it'll definitely get made but is the first step) and I think it was specifically in the wake of HR?? I really hope the wave of HR-inspired hockey romance leads to an adaptation, I need it so bad!! it's genuinely holding up on my re-read. definitely of its time in terms of humor but very cute and actually really well structured/thought-out as a story!

george mac.

the check please name drop coming up to me and punching me in the gut lmao, i do an annual reread around this time every year, so thank you for reminding me that's due. fun fact: i wrote the 16th ever published fanfic for it on ao3! i regrettably orphaned it a long time ago, but at least i didn't delete it.

More Wrong movies yesss Vivica A. Fox rides again! I've been on a horror kick lately - just got off Obsession and Backrooms, gearing up for Leviticus. Also watching the latest season of From, a series which is basically everything the final half of Stranger Things should have been. Just about to binge Widow's Bay as well. Also, it's darkly humorous seeing Netflix and Amazon Prime adapt those Icebreaker and Off Campus series because they're being wilfully obtuse about why HR has been so popular, as if everyone was tuning in for the hockey setting and not, y'know-

Jane Mulcahy

omg an og!! I guess I was also an og tbf (I remember exactly where I was when the graduation update dropped) but I didn't write any fanfic. and I haven't revisited it since I read it the first time in high school! so it's been very fun and nostalgic

I had never heard of Speedway Junky but needed something weird and bad to watch on a weird and bad Tuesday night... so I did click off this and immediately went to watch on tubi. Incredible rec, thank you.

EN NAM ^.^

Yay! I’m so excited for your upcoming projects! Currently reading a few different books, but just finished Detranstion, Baby by Torrey Peters, and am planning on rereading it soon. I started watching TWD recently, I somehow binged seasons 1-9 in the span of a month… and needed to put it down so I have been slowly rewatching Killing Eve. Also I just watched Lars and The Real Girl a couple nights ago, and am planning on rewatching Heavens Door (2012) for a blog post I have been planning.

I’m watching The Boys! just finished season 2 and I’m really enjoying it so far.

check please namedrop awakened a slumbering beast within me lmao my partner and i have been kind of on a bollywood/tiger shroff kick partially inspired by your videos! we watched baaghi 3 a few weeks ago and became obsessed. we watched war, kal ho naa ho, student of the year 2, and last night we saw baaghi 2. tiger is now blorbo from my shows. side note: would love to see you make something about student of the year 2, which we were laughing at. the love triangle/square, the absolute ruthlessness of the villain, the centrality of kabaddi to the plot, the amount of times ananya panday says "duffer," it was an all timer. i also would love to see you discuss baaghi 2 (or perhaps all the baaghi franchise!) in honor of little baaghi because baaghi 2 was also bad in a way i think was very entertaining. in particular: tiger shroff being introduced by him committing war crimes, tiger shroff's former passion being slam ball, tiger's speech to disha patani in which he gives a bullet-point list on why he likes her complete with section headings, the insane twists, and of course the shot where tiger's shirt explodes off of his body. loved it. thank you for opening my eyes to this beautiful corner of cinema that tiger shroff lives in.

I recently watched Psycho Killer and it make me think of you. It has a weird Lifetime-coded plot that I can't really explain, but it was so dumb and bad. Was it the non-ironic satanic panic, the copaganda, or the nuclear terrorism? Who knows. There's a lot to be said about this movie...

Jane Mulcahy

I had not heard of this! But seeing it was written by Andrew Kevin Walker is interesting, I do tend to have mixed thoughts on his movies

Jane Mulcahy

Loved Obsession (but hated watching it + the funk it sent me into for days after), haven't seen Backrooms yet but heard maybe I didn't need to? lol. And yeah the takeaway being "these youngsters just love hockey" and not the gay softcore pornography is.... interesting!

Jane Mulcahy

Heavens Door the faith based movie?? It looks pretty funny

Jane Mulcahy

So it's actually so funny you should say this because I've been very tentatively thinking about a 'I watched every Tiger Shroff movie' video, maybe exclusively for the patreon! I haven't done much for it but I did download all his movies recently and have so far watched Heropanti and rewatched Baaghi. Baaghi 2 is actually the only Baaghi I haven't seen! There was always something that didn't quite grab me, maybe just Tiger's crew cut? But this will help motivate me to check it out. Great news for you guys I will definitely be reviewing more TS movies at SOME point

Amaya GM

unironically kicking my feet at this news... just watched baaghi 1 and was very much obsessed-- it is so much more viscerally violent than the other ones? but also has great locations, and i loved the editing in a lot of moments (and speaking of TS hair, it is beautiful in that film). the cheesy music does make it laughable. i have also seen that tiger has a michael jackson tribute movie (??) called munna michael? i'm afraid it's a must-watch!!

Jordan P.

It has some prestige behind it, which makes it a even bigger flop. I forgot to mention the “psycho killer” himself was also in Degrassi Goes Hollywood(!!!!)

omg hi jane happy pride! right now i'm technically reading paradise lost but i'm also interning for a small independent literary fiction press this summer reading through their unsolicited queries and dear god is it exhausting. something they don't teach you when you study creative writing at an hwc is that the majority of novelists are boring men writing stories about other boring men. if i have to read one more story about a sad dude who just got divorced and describes his ex wife as a petite little redhead with high cheekbones i think i may lose my mind. the stuff i'm watching has been much more fulfilling lately. me and my sister are watching fleabag and hacks together and i'm obsessed with both of them! very refreshing after a long day of consuming the most male-centered fiction of all time to get to sit down and watch some shows that actually have interesting and complex female characters. oh also i have a bit of a request which you can absolutely feel free to ignore: next semester i'm gonna be doing my senior capstone for my creative writing major (eek!) and i'm planning on writing a kind of spoof of the middle grade detective novel starring an incredibly depressed non-binary middle schooler (totally not based on true events lol....) i want to base the tone/mystery around noir detective films but i have literally never seen one before (unless bound counts....) and have no idea where i would start. do you have any recs for some cool noir detective films i should check out this summer?

Jane Mulcahy

not the petite little redhead with high cheekbones 🫩 I admit I'm not the biggest noir viewer ever (I know more about the genre academically than I have actually seen the films lol) but The Maltese Falcon is definitely a classic, and probably the most quintessential 'detective noir' of the ones I've seen. Other films I like that are often classed as noirs but aren't detective-focused would be Rebecca (1940), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Mildred Pierce (1945), Sunset Boulevard (1950), and Touch of Evil (1958). I'm not the best source for detective noir movies, but noir is a really well-studied genre, so there are probably a lot of credible best-of lists to look into. Here's one from the BFI: https://www.bfi.org.uk/lists/10-great-american-film-noirs

nei vilde

i don't remember when you metioned that movie for the first time, but i watched it then, and apparently, i was shocked that milo ventimiglia was an extra in it lmao. and i was also apparently in a very bisexual movie time in my life, cuz i kept comparing it to other movird with bi (or head canoned bi) men that i wished it was more similar to lmao. anyway, can't wait for the video. also, i finished reading interview with the vampire/started the vampire lestat to read in tandem with the show. personally i think the show is my favourite verison of the story though
