I must talk about The Love Hypothesis (2026)

I continue to be fascinated by the niche industry that is traditionally published fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off, and this only becomes more entertaining when said disguised fanfic is adapted to the screen. Our latest example is the new film The Love Hypothesis, adapted from Ali Hazelwood's 2021 novel, itself adapted from Hazelwood's 2018 Rey x Kylo Ren Star Wars AU fanfiction, Head Over Feet. This fanfic movie has everything: A try-hard bad boy who wears all black, a quirky awkward protagonist, disposable gay and non-white best friend characters to cheer on our lead, and even a scrapped Stormpilot subplot (I would like to see it.) Let's chat a little about the background of this thing, then go through all the moments in the movie that got a sensible chuckle out of me for all the wrong reasons. it is a personal thing as someone who prefers some parts of fandom stay separate from mainstream consumption, but i get sooo embarrassed when they don't even change the character design on the covers of these fanfic books. i was at least grateful they went with different-looking actors (though the daisy ridley connection is hilarious imo)

I do worry that as these adaptations become more commonplace, the entirety of fanfiction will be litigated when someone gets too lazy doesn't untether the project enough from the original work or regulate their parasociality, kinda like what we're seeing with The Pitt and Heated Rivalry. This movie is definitely the right way to do this sort of thing, but it's scary to think that access to fanfiction relies on an honour system that's probably going to be tested if Hollywood decides to invest in this sort of thing.
