I dislike this one but Josh’s thoughts on it were well reasoned

paultardspambot .

So this is good as a place to comment as any. Here's the thing with the fallout from the DS9 season 2 finale. I think that many people who love this show and were looking forward to you guys getting into it were dismayed because they are worried that (assuming the Dominion isn't just dropped and never mentioneed again) any time anything involving the Dominion comes up, because of your reaction to their introduction, you will wind up checked out. More so, you yourselves have said that people who talk about DS9 love it partialy for its more complex and serialized arcs. There is probably some worry that you will have a similar reaction to the way many TNG fans iniatially viewed DS9, dismissing it as "not real trek" because it wasn't about a ship going to a random planet every day. Personally I think, trying something diferent with Trek, where the world building that has been done is taken advatnage of and they try to tell a more complex, epic story- is shown to be especially necessary when compared to Voyager, which, in my opinion, basiccally turns into an attempt to do TNG 2.0 but with more technobabble, less attention to charcters, and just an obviously inferior version. So I think people are concerned that the very things they like about it about are going to lead you to hate it because it's very much NOT TNG or TOS. It is still episodic, but as you have said, tv is so serialized you liked going back to a a show with an episodic format, and I think it seems to some people that a show that is stil episodic but goes in a more serialized direction will prejudice you against the show. And to be honest, there are times when you have checked out ot an episode because you didn't like something early on. I think the fans would be more reassured, not that you explain what you mean by "oh no, the plot" but if maybe you kind of re-affirmed that despite not liking that episode, you will be open minded to the Dominion (if it shows up again) and you will go into the show knowing it's more serialized, which may not be your thing, but judging the show on its own terms rather then rejecting it for not being what you want it to be. I think, frankly, it's not that people misunderstood you so much as just genuiely disagreed with you. I think all the pot mechanis do NOT come at the expense of character and in fact very much enhance it. Even in that episode, a lot of people felt that the Quark-Sisko stuff continued and worked for them. Yes, a lot of the focus of thr later episode was on "the big threat" and yes, it's very much intorducing "an over powered big bad" but the thing that honestly worked for a lot of people. I understand you guys saying, well, we've seen this sort of thing so it doesn't feel original to us. But I think that is exactly where people get conerned. DS9 did so many things that were new to trek especially, but really ahead of their time for where television was, that judging it by the standards of what camwe later- that we've become accustomed to serailzied storylines and big bad introductions or whatever- I think the concern is very much that you will be dismissive of DS9 for the exact reason so many people like it. And since TNG is over, and you're going to watch DS9 anyway, I feel like IF you guys just shit on the show because of " big plots" and twists and turns and the like, its not going to be very interesting to watch. As opposed to accepting the show is not TNG, and maybe isnt your thing is if takes trek in a more serialized direction, but still trying to judge each episode on its own merits and not just pre-emptively say "I hate this" because it's not TNG and there are long running arcs and such. I think that is why people were so worried about your reaction to the finale- not because you didn't like the episode- but more so because it seemed like you (especially Alex) was just going to hate the direction the show was going and be crapping on it relentlessly for not being the show he would want. So I think if you guys, despite not liking that episode, came out with a comment that you aren't going to let that episode spoil the rest of the show for you, and again, in case the Dominion doesn't disappear and never get mentioned again, be open to that direction and not just dismiss anything along those lines because you didn't like their introduction. I guess technically this post runs afoul of the spoiler rule, but let's be adults here. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, and I don't think you really believe for a second there just never going to mention the Dominion again. I really enjoy this channel, and a large part of it is because of your different perspective and because you actually review the episodes instead of doing the audience capture thing where everything is "amazing." However, I don't think most people particularly want to stick around for you guys to be forced to watch a show you're going to hate. I think that is the much bigger concern then people not liking your opinion of that one episode. For a lot of people, they were probably thinkinf "oh man, this is gonna totally blow them away, this is when I really got excited about Deep Space Nine" so obviously you're reaction was disappointing. because while we want you to be honest, we also want you to genuiely enjoy the things we do. Prior to this point in the show, the Gamma Quadrant, which was such a central premise of the show, was largely an undefined space which seemed no different then any other area of space. Now the setup of the show has fundamentally changed. The station, instead of being an outpost in the wild west, is on the literal entry point for a power that threatens the Federation. All the things we've established are still there, but we've now ramped it up by thi station suddenly becoming one of the most important to the federation. You guys talked about the lack of consequences for chaarcters, but you didn't reflect at all on how these events very much changes the status quo for our characters, and makes all the problems they had to deal with even more important and vital for the Federation. Put in a different way- this is the kind of show where a map of fictional space really helps. You guys dont seem like those kinds of fans. Thats fair of course, but if we are going to take this journey with you, wer at least want you to give somethingoutside your comfort zone a chance. Now I'm not saying you weren't going to do this, I think it was just a concern many had and underscored the reactions.

Myself, I just want geniune, honest reactions to every episode. I could care less of they like DS9 less than TNG.
