I still need to watch the full video, but I already know my most impassioned comment will be about jeans. My high school years were all khakis, all the time. Or the blue JCPenney version of khakis. I HATED jeans. I finally adapted in time to take advantage of Jeans Days at corporate jobs, and now I just default to them. I try not to think too much about how they only kind of fit and it sorta feels like I’m wearing an old tent. Back later with thoughts on the actual video, even, maybe!

Michael Mannisto

The greatest 3 episode run in TNG is s3 - Yesterday's Enterprise, The Offspring, Sins Of The Father

Vexx

Hey hey, save that intro type content for your onlyfans :D

Purple

You still have some TNG movies coming up, so it's not over yet :)

Worf and Riker Ride Again

This is a man that “Will wear any pants that slip through the cracks’ - his words!

penoyer79

i already said it before, but i'll say it again. React to "Chaos on The Bridge". It'll clear up so much about the early part of the show. michael dorn started having bad reactions to the make-up... so part of his looking so different was them having to adjust

Collin Freeman

A good tailored suit is a good thing. I used to sell men's suits years ago as a part-time job. Learned a lot. Nowadays, I only wear them to weddings and funerals.

misti-step

i promised myself that when i graduate college, i would buy myself my first suit for the occasion. im on track to finally graduate next winter and im looking forward to getting a custom suit!

Paul

Lol the Josh random old lady lore drop, unexpected, but indeed they have no filter. Interesting to hear Josh, at least one of your Top 26 is from season 1? Perhaps Conspiracy. Not in mine, but I can respect it. I'm a huge Worf Ponytail defender btw, come at me.

Summer

Not going to predict your feelings of Voyager, but I saw TNG, much of it as a kid, as a young adult I saw Enterprise but kind of forgot that I did. Then I found Voyager and I liked it then I got TNG on DVD it has more nolstagia power for me but I love most of the characters of Voyager, I then saw DS9 too and was ready for something different . I have seen them all and the new stuff several times but will not influence you further

penoyer79

a bit unfair to compare the last season of TNG to TOS as TOS was left for dead. they put it on a night and time no one would watch it, they crippled their budget and said good luck to you. Roddenberry basically rage quit... it was dead on arrival. and we still got some of the best episodes of the series. kirk said best in the final line of the series in Turnabout Intruder "If only... if only..."

Collin Freeman

For me, there are about a dozen episodes of TOS that no other series can touch. But, for a series as a whole, TNG was the best and managed to show all of the good things that Roddenberry imagined come together in good harmony.

Collin Freeman

Voyager: Star Trek Lite or Diet TNG? Hmmm, interesting take. We shall see.

Collin Freeman

A custom-made suit can be a beautiful thing

Lost Monk

lol, I've never met anyone that doesn't love (or very much like) "The Inner Light."

TinMan_7B9

I would love to see that reaction as well. In fact, I demand it.

Ken R

Dressing up when you are a guy in a good suit is like armoring up. You know when you look good and it affects you mentally in a good way.

Anthony Hernandez

Ensign Gomez was in one more episode, either the one right before or right after Q Who, but I can’t remember which

TinMan_7B9

Lite or Diet? Sure, interesting choice of words. But what exactly is the essential ingredient that must be missing from the full-fat TNG experience that makes something TNG-Lite? Was DS9 Season 1 TNG-Lite or just a different take on TNG style Star Trek?

Ken R

Wait, what groundwork did TNG lay and for what shows? I cannot think of a single thing outside of the next couple of ST shows.

Ken R

I sold suits on commission in a fine men's shop in NYC; Hugo Boss mostly in the store. With guys I learned how to size up who is looking to buy by their shoes. Most guy don't care about shoes and are fine with sneakers, so when someone walked in with expensive fine shoes, I knew I had a live one.

Target Audience

Luckily, I am naturally extremely good looking so I don’t need a suit.

Target Audience

The quality of the episodes is what makes the difference

Sam Langanke

Because of dubbing, airing and stuff for the german speaking markets I did not have the experience to switch between TNG and DS9 episodes on first watch. VOY also started a year or two later than in the US. But eventually I saw DS9 and VOY alternately. I remember this as refreshing. While DS9 built its world and story with more and more continuity, VOY offered an ever episodic weekly trip out in the unknown. If it was good you looked forward to the next break from the DS9 tension. If it was bad you were glad to return to the station.

Collin Freeman

I've heard other salesmen from my era who did the same thing. I was on part commission and part hourly wage when I sold men's clothing. Came in handy at Christmas time.

Trekkie74205

I still say there is plenty you will like in Voyager. Of course, there are the people that somehow "hate" whole Trek shows which I don't get. I don't love some of the newer shows but have at least enjoyed parts of them. Voyager has a unique premise and is not just a Next Generation clone. It has many of the types of episodes you guys are drawn to. I think it has at least 2 of the best characters in all of Star Trek. As with most things, an open mind goes a long way.

Matchstick Jose

Woo! About to watch this sitting in my home wearing my jeans that I always wear in my home. Can’t wait to have all my fashion choices validated!

Forbidden Donut

Am I remembering correctly that you both were familiar with Jonathan Frakes before watching TNG, due to Beyond Belief? If so, I was curious to know if your perception of him has changed now that you've seen TNG? Is he still the 'Beyond Belief guy', or do you see him as Riker now? Did he live up to your expectations?

Paul

I'd look at it as TNG being classic Coke, DS9 would be Dr. Pepper. Voyager is freshly brewed coffee with hints of nutty cocoa. They're all beverages, but they definitely have uniqueness to them.

KingPin124

Josh used to wear track pants like a 1990’s Russian mobster.

KingPin124

Just a random side note: Until now, I had no idea that Genesis wasn’t a universally enjoyed episode. All my life, I thought this episode was a banger (which it is) and I was looking forward to your reaction, given the bit of horror aspect to it. I assumed you guys would enjoy it and it sounds like you did.

KingPin124

Voyager is a good show. Bit of a mixed bag early seasons, just like TNG and DS9. It has some great characters (as do all of the shows obviously). Prediction: Josh will come to really like the captain.

TC Green

I can’t say much without spoilers but I will say I don’t hate Voyager, it just disappoints me a lot.

Target Audience

This is a great question, that I would like to expand on in my live stream tomorrow

Aaron Wells

I liked Voyager. Wasn't my favorite but I liked it. I understand how a particularly bad character or two that you don't like can drag down a whole show for certain people. There's a character on voyager that I absolutely despised just about every time he was on screen. But I got past it. Totally get why other people wouldn't.

Patrick Smith

In a sense, Voyager is closer to what the original Star Trek represented than what DS9 depicts. Both feature new alien races, but to some, DS9 can be a space opera at its best, whereas Voyager is a journey.

paultardspambot .

Im definitely on the voyager hate side, and I basically agree with everything Ron Moore had to say about the show. I'll post his interview after leaving on the subject when we get there.

Sunny

As much as it can feel a bit lonely to not know anyone who watches this show in my family/friend group except for my mom’s nostalgia for TOS which she watched reruns of when she first immigrated to the US, I do appreciate that it’s let me enjoy or not enjoy things organically and without influence of others. It surprised me when I started engaging more with discourse online and found that some things I never questioned were so disliked while others that I loved were eye rolls for the internet 😂 on the whole, I find my scope of love/like episodes expands over time.

BN13

I'd say TNG season 1 is proto-TNG, but I definitely wouldn't call it TNG-lite.

THE Fans

So, there's nutty cocoa in that coffee?

THE Fans

"Worst Star Trek Movie"? Bu bu but ... the Cold War. And Klingon Shakespeare.

Loot Narsbaar

I think DS9 is Cherry Coke, and Voyager is Diet Coke

Loot Narsbaar

let me be the first to say that Star Trek 6 is good

Matchstick Jose

Boy, there's so much one could discuss about your Voyager speculation, but it's pretty much impossible to comment without setting expectations for you. I will say, I don’t think it’s controversial to say that Voyager is more popular than DS9. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen stories about how Voyager’s streaming numbers rival TNG’s. DS9 always come in with lower numbers. And the most “rewatched” episodes on Netflix are all TNG and VOY episodes.

Sam Langanke

Prediction: Alex will come to really like the helmsman.

Ryan

BN13

In my opinion, and from what I can tell, I think the writers and the people creating Voyager absolutely DID care about making good Star Trek. I just don't think they were as talented as the mix of people we ended up getting on TNG and DS9. And yes I know that VOY had a ton of staff who also worked on TNG and DS9. But a lot of that staff either ended up leaving VOY, or their style of writing that worked really well for TNG, didn't really work as well for VOY. Plus from what I heard, the set was kind of a toxic work environment for the actors. The cast of TNG got to the point where they we're basically having a party right up until they yelled "Action!" But from what I heard, the VOY set was definitely not fun, and there was a lot of resentment between people. A lot of the cast felt like they got screwed. I still really like VOY for what it is, but you can tell where it's trying, but struggles.

Matthew Jimenez

Damn who spoiled Josh on my favorite Star Trek character: KEVIN!

Ryan

I wonder how much of it was burnout. I got the sense that the same group of producers stayed in the trenches too long.

Philbot

There’s that meme “Guys what’s keeping you from dressing like this all the time? “ And it’s a picture of a guy in like a suit and waistcoat and someone responds “ Because I’m not a waiter at the Olive Garden.” 😂

Ryan

One more comment: I don't know if anyone's brought up the Nitpicker's Guides by Phil Farrand, but back in the day, he went through every TOS and TNG episode and picked them apart as much as possible. (His rationale was, "If you love someone, you tell them about the spinach between their teeth.") I got to thinking about this as I got to your Season 5 discussion. There were so many episodes where he correctly asked who cared about any of that stuff. Like, it's great that Worf and Alexander are trying to get along, but who cares? Is that a plot that drives an episode of this show? (Clearly I don't think so.)

Philbot

That inner light opinion doesn’t make sense to me it’s barely Sci fi at all the story wouldn’t work without Picard he’s the heart of the “second life” story

Forbidden Donut

*watches the stream, sees no mention of this* "Not this time." 😁

Target Audience

It’s a story about a space probe implanting 30 years of life into a man’s head of an extinct alien species. It’s science fiction. It being Picard is essentially irrelevant, the same story could be written with the protagonist being an astronaut. Any attempt to say “it matters it’s Picard because” is only in the context of TNG, not the story of the episode. That doesn’t make the episode good or bad, it’s just a fact regarding its framing.

BN13

Wouldn't Voyager have to be black coffee?

Evan Guthrie

I don't want to spoil anything about Voyager so I'll say this: It has its own unique identity.

Nolan

Man, I ALWAY wore jeans growing up. And I'm not too much older than you guys. I never thought to wear anything else. Only recently have I hit on sweatpants at home wear. Jeans were comfy to me. But like, they had to be broken in. A little worn down.

Ryan

Yeah, that's fair. I work hard not to spoil stuff but sometimes I slip up. I'll remove this.

Ian Westcott

Oh my God, Josh and I have SO much in common! I also was that guy who really hated wearing jeans... and now I like wearing them almost every day. I don't know why.

paultardspambot .

According to Moore, by the later season, they were checked out
