Thicketdweller

Oh well, it’s a good morning. I’m snowed in iced in and there’s some Target Audience to keep the morning entertaining and warm. By that I’m expecting some heat from Alex‘s burning this episode to shreds hopefully I’m wrong

By the nature of reading a book in a sentence is always exposition, but I’ve noticed that the exposition in the books is often done as internal monologue. If Murtry wants to ask his second-in-command about supplies that is just the dialogue that they show you the rest of it’s his internal dialogue, and it doesn’t feel disruptive, but when you watch the episodes, all of his internal dialogue is practically in her face and she’s asking other questions that feed his dialogue, thus increasing the exposition which I think is actually a failure. They needed to find a better way to show us instead of tell us because they show us in the book, even though it’s all by nature telling.

I am beginning to get the distinct impression Alex and Josh don't like this season of The Expanse. LOL!!!

I don't think the Martian who locked out Bobble was dead, just unconscious.

I think my main issue with season 4 is that while every season of most every show has filler episodes, this is more like a filler season. So much time on the alien planet just seems like a bad roleplaying campaign where the DM can't figure out where to go next. The Earth election stuff is mildly interesting to me, but it's also more filler. The Mars stuff and OPA stuff are the interesting parts but not really given the time to shine.

"Bobbie Draper" "Yeah, I don't care" Alex and Josh "Same dude, same" Also S4 was actually released very late in 2019, not 2018. Just before the COVID pandemic started. I'm not saying it caused the pandemic, but I'm sure you'll make your own judgements. I get it though. I forgot how much this season puttered along before anything really started to happen. Personally I still want to see you react to S5 since it's a big step up, and also it would be nice to wrap up a non Trek show for once. Maybe when the bridge crew does a poll combine S5 and 6 together since S6 is only 6 episodes. Just decide once and for all whether to finish the show or drop it. Also I know it's on the list, but whether it's a BC pick or if when you get to NuTrek the numbers don't justify 3 reactions a week, if you do end up picking up SG-1, I suspect you'll enjoy it a lot. Toward the end of Voyager and going into Enterprise, Trek was really losing steam and other scifi series were grabbing up audiences. BSG heralded the "darker, grittier" direction SciFi would go in general, but if there was a franchise 90s Trek would have handed the baton to, it's Stargate. While obviously a lot of the basic setup is different, being set in the (at the time) modern day, SG-1 has a TON of the DNA of 90s Trek. The characters feel like people you can actually look up to as opposed to the morally grey types that were becoming prevalent at the time, it's episodic with serialized elements, and like Trek tells a broad range of stories, ranging from emotional character dramas to comedies, to horror-esque eps, to moral dilemmas, to straight up scifi wackiness and everything in between. And since you mentioned it here, it even has the episode title/guest stars/producer/writer/director credits after the intro just like trek. On top of that, having a smaller cast focused on the main team of 4, and 22 episode seasons, you don't really wind up with neglected characters like LaForge or Crusher or Uhura.

It's funny when you asked if this type of content is a result of tiktok viewers and short attention spans when I was constantly getting the opposite impression. That your angst towards this is that tiktok mentality. It's going too slow, there's not enough tension, fast enough plot progression. Then when something happens like an explosion you're like wow an explosion haven't seen that lol. This isn't my favorite part of the show but I love this stuff. Personally I think it's great to have a break after the fast pace of the last season, to let some new characters marinate. It bounces around but not 9 times lol and certainly not the first time. I like the Game of Thrones example which bounces around even more all the time... I love this stuff. It's funny since I think with your determination to judge an episode you miss just so much of what's in it. There's a lot of really great character development going on in these episodes. The bond growing between Drummer and Ashford, Naomi really evolving a lot. Holden also with the help of Naomi coming to terms at least a bit with his complex of carrying the weight of the world's problems on his shoulders, at least silently. Facing his fear of sounding crazy telling others what's going. Amos isn't going through leaps and bounds, but he's been so emotionally stuck that he seems to be generating genuine feelings for his fling and the conflict that keeps creating. You rag on not liking to sympathize with the belters, but based only on the actions of some. I mean if Earth and Mars were judged by the actions of Mao, Errinwright, and the Mars leaders who nearly caused the human species to go extinct then you'd hate on all of them. There are plenty of belters like Drummer and Ashford trying their best. That conflict of having to hunt and kill their own kind for doing what they used to do is scattered throughout this first half the the season. Then the belters on the planet like the belter leader lady, she's extremely reasonable considering and not caught up in anything dirty. I mean maybe you missed the arc of these belters but they are refuges forced out of Ganymede due to the war of Earth and Mars. No one would let them in anywhere so out of desperation they tried and barely got through the ring gate and landed here, that was literally the intro scene to the season and they keep repeating it. If they go up to space they die. Holden even said it about Murtry wanting them to dump the Lithium, he's just killing them slower. This first half is slow for sure and it's not everyone's cup of tea but even if it's not your preference there's a lot of good deep content here, world building and character building too. I mean Naomi landing on a planet for the first time ever and the struggles with that then realizing she can't handle it and going to space. Even Alex in helping the belter woman gets some character time too. Honestly I think the show needed something like this after it's fast pace, but if you disagree you are missing so much by being so impatient and being bored with things like proto molecule lightning storms, and islands exploding lol... that somehow aren't big enough events.

the issue with season 4 isn't the pace, it's that so much of the slow pace gets focused on random characters that are: 1) completely new 2) completely uninteresting 3) stuff we've seen before (belter plight). also, there are certain plot lines that can be solved with a single phone call, but people are too stubborn to make that phone call for pretty bad reasons. 1) holden has a direct line to chrisjen. he can't call her and tell her that there's an earth company that is literally executing belters? she would literally just recall the ship and that entire story would be dealt with. but no, he never calls her to report back to her, even though she keeps calling him and asking for updates. so what, is he just stupid? i don't get it. 2) the belter family drama about the mother/father issues, mother/daughter issues, and mother/alex love thing. it's just... like who cares? we barely know these people. 3) drummer: wtf are you doing trusting a notoriously manipulative terrorist. like why? it's just so dumb. it's so contrived. i could keep going, but i'll stop there.
