Michael Nemo

Somewhere between the Theatrical and Donner cuts is a great film.

Collin Freeman

In my mind, I think of Alex's analogy between Superman and Batman in reverse. Superman is Kal-El, he's a superhuman compared to Earthlings: Clark Kent is the put on. Batman came out of events and training on the part of Bruce Wayne and a way to channel is anger and frustration, but he's not a really Batman.

Yeah, I don't like Man of Steel because of how and the way in which it handled the Superman character, but agree with you on the recent David Corenswet Superman. I thought James Gunn pretty much nailed the fun and the right amount of seriousness with the characters in that one.

The original script for Superman 2 is available online. It is sad to see that there were many scenes that Donner was never able to film because of his firing. I have a feeling that one day, with AI and CGI, we’ll see that script filmed and it’ll be as close to Donner’s true vision as possible.

That’s why I put together my own cut several years ago!

I definitely disagree with this take. He is most often Clark Kent first and Superman/Kal-El second. His character is his humanity which comes from being raised by the Kents. His powers and the fact he is an alien are secondary to that. He is Batman, he was robbed of the parentage and caring that Clark got and so he trained and channeled his emotions into transforming into the Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne now exists more as a public persona and a name for his close family to use since he is of course still proud of his parents name . The most successful of their respective stories usually treat the characters in this way I find. There are always exceptions in comics though of course.

Brando was not in Superman II due to contract dispute. He was put back in for the Donner Cut

I much prefer the original cinematic release. Just not a fan of the Donner Cut. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the Lois plummeting out of the window scene…and I LOVE adding Brando back in the movie! Without a doubt, my favorite shot of this version was Jor-El looking up disapprovingly at Lois as his son is giving up his powers for her. Gave me the chills. You both hit on why I didn’t care for this version. Turning back the world again at the end…Clark confronting the truck stop bully, which in this context now makes Clark look like an asshole picking a fight with some random human…and the editing is much more choppy. And WTF is with Superman’s line, “General, haven’t you ever heard of freedom of the press?” instead of the original’s “General, would you care to step outside?” which drew THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE from the theatre audience in 1981!! The cinematic version just felt more exciting and was extremely impressionable on me as an eleven year old at the time! Great reaction, guys! Looking forward to what 2026 brings! Have a very Happy New Year!! 🖖😎

Must remember Donner did not get to film all that is needed to make this really a Richard Donner Cut, They had to use Lester footage so somethings not fit. Also from my understanding, they film i and 2 together, and Donner was forced to complete the first one due to release date. So the turning back time was not to happen until 2. I like a lot of things in the Donner Cut. the test footage of the bullet scene was better. I would be great to see a true Donner movie, but that will never happen. Unless someone takes the script and does an AI version. lol

The Original one is the Best Superman move ever!!!

I might be cool to see a few of The Adventures of Superman TV Show from 1952 staring George Reeves

The theatrical cut has been a favourite in our family for 40 years! The most watched and most quoted film for us. "Lex Luthor, ruler of Australia. Activate the machine"

Matt Everkoul

The NASA guy that Alex thought was Michael Biehn… Josh was right, it was Cliff from Cheers (aka John Ratzenberger). He also had a small (different) role in the first Superman movie, playing an army or navy missile operator. Probably best known these days for having voice actor roles in nearly all the Pixar films.

Harry Broos

Dump a shit ton of snakes on them. kryptonite works best, but snakes are a close second

Forbidden Donut

I saw a YouTube video comparing both versions (including side by side comparisons) that I thought was interesting. If I recall, his conclusion was that the best cut of this movie would probably take elements from both editions, and I think he may be right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_AYM_vmH1o

The turn back time scene was supposed to only be in 2 but ended up being used in 1 for some reason. The return to the Bully scene should not be there IMO. The restored Jor-El scenes is worth the price of admission on its own to me.

Numinous2019

When simultaneous production of the first two films was stopped (due to escalating costs and slower than scheduled filming) the decision was made that the first film needed the turn back time concept as a 'capper'. They left the ending of part two to be decided when filming resumed.

Numinous2019

Josh's concept of the 2nd act being about the Clark / Lois relationship is a very good one. The problem though is that Lois really is in love with the Superman persona. This casts her unfortunately in a shallow and possibly selfish light. This may just be due to romances in this kind of film (just like the Bond movies of that time) as being only a subplot.

THE Fans

Just a small opinion about SMALLVILLE... it's really catching on with more smaller channels reacting to it. There's no waiting, like Star Trek... where people say "Watch 2 seasons to get to the good stuff"... Smallville takes off from the 1st episode. Really hoping it's coming soon here. IMO... it's the best incarnation of Superman. Like I said before, I've got at least 10 people hooked who have done multiple viewings. I'm on my 8th viewing of the series. My 75 year old mom is on her 4th... and she got her retired military boyfriend into it. He's on his 3rd. If I had to pick between all Trek and Smallville, I'd have to give it some deep thought.

I actually grew up in Niagara Falls and I remember going to that shoot at the Falls as a kid. Christopher Reeve was so kind, greeting everyone, taking pictures and signing autographs

The Salkinds wanted Superman 1 and 2 filmed simultaneously (a strategy they used in the Three and Four Musketeer movies) as a cost-cutting measure, giving them 2 movies for a little more than one. Donner had filmed a large chunk of Superman II when the budgetary fallout occurred with the Salkinds. They brought up the ending of the 2nd movie to the first movie (turning back time), resulting in a repeat ending. Donner was fired, but the first movie was a HUGE hit. If Donner had been retained, Superman 2 would have to be re-written, given the change in the first story. Because the Salkinds wanted Donner removed from the credits, they reshot much of the footage with Richard Lester at the helm. When Donner was brought back years later to do this cut, you are getting something *closer* to the original script. But Donner had been away from the project for years, so basically you're enjoying an assembly of previously unused footage that ultimately feels imperfect. There are fanedits that have worked to correct the issues between the two films.

Josh I know you got the mail from Another viewer Super Girl extended directors cut you guys really need to add that to this series. You should’ve seen it before you watch three and four but
