Nice, its a classic. I'll have to track it down to watch again with you.

Collin Freeman

The director, Robert Aldrich, was one of those directors whom the critics tended to like but the mass audience would often not show up to see his films. I think of him as 1 of those guys whose work was better appreciated after the fact. This film was a classic example of that.

Btw, this story mirrors, in some respects, a true life event that happened to Gene Roddenberry when he was a pilot for Pan Am Airways. His plane went down in the Syrian desert.

The "guy who plays Dorfmann" is Hardy Krüger (1928-2022) who was already a big movie star in Germany in the 1950s. He went on to star in many european (british, french, italian) films in the 1960s and 70s. Unfortunately for him because of his stereotypical "Teutonic" look (blond hair and blue eyes), Krüger often had to play German soldiers. Like in the acclaimed (and highly reccomended) worldwar II movie "A Bridge Too Far" (1977) - directed by Richard Attenborough. Krüger was raised by ardent Nazi parents, attended a Nazi elite school and served in the war in the infamous Waffen SS, but broke with Nazi ideology because of an actor friend and mentor who was against the regime. After quitting acting in the 1980s he became a well known writer and documentary filmmaker, mostly about nature and travelling.

The YouTube link gives details on that as well as interesting facts about the whole movie.

Thanks for watching. I seen it many times on VHS in the 90s as a kid. The laughing/crying of Lew always gives me goosebumps. The scene with the imaginary dancer was fast forwarded most of the times. :D

I love this movie, love the cast, especially James Stuart, Richard Attenborough and Hardy Krüger. It's really on my my alltime favorite list (which is pretty long). The movie still holds up with todays movies and is - IMHO - better than the remake. The engine startup scene is iconic. I was really happy when I saw it on your January schedule. Thank you guys for picking this one and making it through and giving it a good round of discussion afterwards. If anyone wants to watch along but doesn't find a copy or a streaming service: as of now, you find it on YT. Same version Josh and Alex watch. The one on YT is for some reason 30 seconds longer , but it is easy to (re-)sync it thanks to Josh and Alex showing a few frames througout the entire movie. Thanks again, guys. You made my day with this.

A great film brought down a notch by the last few minutes. The survivors should have been recognized for their achievement and remembrance for those left behind. Finally, in the real world, The Phoenix would be in the Smithsonian as a reminder of the triumph of the human spirit.

I'd love for them to watch A Bridge Too Far as well.

In so much as the they are a crew, the Phoenix crew are the opposite of the TNG era Enterprise crew in a crisis. Back-stabbing, petty bickering, egos run rampant, resource theft, openly disobeying orders, leaving someone to die.... I wonder if there were consequences for Sgt Watson, he's still in the British army and the others could report him for his behaviour and disobeying orders. Or would they let it go given the life or death circumstances they all just experienced? He wouldn't survive in a Starfleet crew, his redemption arc would his conclude with him sacrificing his life to ensure the successful take-off of their 'Phoenix' vehicle. This is a quality film with a stacked cast.

I think Josh would prefer "An Abridged Version Too Far" given the 3 hour run time of that WWII classic.
