Pre watch preview? 😂

Jonathon Tsagris

Voyager's primary function in the broader star trek Universe was to be a shiny thing to distract Studio executives with so that Ira Behr and Ronald Moore could go be awesome on DS9 without fear of having their show endure the molestation of talentless hacks

Numinous2019

I loved Alex's cut-off reference to Turnabout Intruder. I think you'll overall like Voyager. It can be frustrating, but the best episodes are genuinely strong and there are entertaining and surprising stories around the corner (whenever frustration sets in).

Ragnarok

“Is there a…*Ferengi Doctor*?” Something tells me you guys were *never* able to come even *close* to guessing who/what the Doctor was actually going to be? 😆

Malamute

This show gets really good in season 8. Hahaha... just kidding. Just being a smart ass for how people said similar in previous series. I hope ya'll really enjoy this series.

LonghillAndy

Oh man a black Spock! That would be hilarious

Trekkie74205

Despite my name, I don't blindly love all Star Trek. I can say to varying degrees, I love everything through Enterprise. I am currently in Season Four of a Voyager rewatch. There are a lot of great episodes. I think you guys will love it, especially since you don't have pre-exisiting biases. I understad your point about DS9 not getting to be on its own for long. I guess it doesn't matter though considering what it achieves. You have riches ahead of you on DS9 that you can't comprehend yet.

JoeCensored

Fun Fact about the pilot. Kate Mulgrew wasn't the original actress for the captain. They filmed for around a week with another actress, she couldn't handle the pressure and investment needed, and they quickly had to slot Mulgrew in and reshoot all the already completed captain scenes.

AdmiralMurphy

When you guys get back to DS9 after the first few voyager episodes I'll be born. I never saw these two shows growing up. I only remember seeing TNG when my dad would watch growing up, and then Enterprise when it came out.

harrypothead42024

Voyager was my least favorite of the the 3, 7 season group. I think that was probably because in my local area we did not have UPN. after watching and re-watching, I get why some people see it as their favorite. I like all Star Trek so my opinion is skewed, but I don't think anyone can deny that there are some absolute GOLD level episodes in this show. Have fun, and May The Force Be With You!

Matchstick Jose

Target Audience now also using bio-neural gel packs.

Purple

Janeway's actress is also in Orange is the New Black.

Forbidden Donut

Aww, man, someone told Alex about the 'Janeway learns to ride a dolphin' episode?? It's over, guys. They know too much.

Molly Campbell

I can say this because I know you've already watched the episode, but I laughed out loud when you were joking about "black Spock"

Worf and Riker Ride Again

I don’t get why some people hate on Voyager. Everyone has their favourites, of course, but TNG, DS9 and Voyager are all very similar. You’ll love some episodes, you’ll hate others, same with almost every good show ever made. I personally love Voyager, TNG is my favourite because I grew up with it, it has that nostalgia factor that you can’t really ever get again as an adult watching something new. But in all honesty, TNG and Voyager are very much on the same level IMO.

Jayne Fleming

Based on this- I’m excited for you to get to Enterprise. Honestly one of my faves for a lot of reasons mentioned here.

Marcus BlueSky

I am more than surprised that you mention that there were articles about Cpt. Janeway being a woman. Especially coming from ST fans. ST as long as it existed it was always about equality of humans (and other species). Just look at the TOS crew: a 1966 TV show featuring a russian crew member in the middle of the cold war, a Japanese crew member just 23 years after Japanese US citizens were put into camps for just being of Japanese descent or a black crew member just 2 years after racial segregation ended in the US. So a black man being a commander on a space station or a woman being a captian on a space ship shouldn't have been really a big deal in the 90ies, coming from ST fans. I was not aware of that. On a lighter note: thank you for this discussion, not just for its content about your expectations and hopes, but also for simply dropping it during the waiting time for the pilot. With your trailer you really hyped me up and I cannot wait till you start!!! Question: are you going to drop a "listen along" to the VOY theme like you did with DS9?

tyranusfan

I'm really excited for you to get to Star Trek: Enterprise!

tyranusfan

Sounds like he's ready for SeaQuest DSV!

tyranusfan

Paramount was pushing for another show to fill the TNG "type." (read: on a ship). Berman and the producers were hesitant, since DS9 was just getting on its feet and they didn't want to saturate the market. Paramount wanted another Trek tent-pole show for the new UPN network, and told Berman that they were going to make one with or without him.

tyranusfan

UPN and WB network were both suffering financially, and then merged into CW around 2006, which is just fizzling out now.

Ryan

Like all DS9 fans, I’m honor-bound to repeat that DS9 is my favorite series. But Voyager was the one I watched when it aired, because I grew up with TNG and this show was also set on a starship, so it filled that need. I didn’t really get into DS9 until its later seasons, because [spoilers redacted]. So for the immediate post-TNG years, Voyager was where I turned every week, and there was a lot to like. In a way, it’s a weird blend of all the Star Trek that came before it, which means you are perfectly set up for this journey. I’m excited to revisit this old friend of a show.

Target Audience

We didn’t listen to it beforehand but the intro portion of episode one will be clipped and posted soon

SierraNicole

I'm so excited for this journey. Voyager is easily the most rewatchable of the 7 season series and the premise is excellent. It's a great cast of characters who, importantly, have great chemistry which I think I missed a little in DS9. I know that there are a lot of DS9 fanboys that hate on Voyager (and honestly, I think it's at least in part due to that thick toxic vein of misogyny in the nerd community), but I think it's a great series that hopefully you'll really enjoy. I think of all the Star Treks, it gets at the heart of what Star Trek is about--adventure, exploration, discovery, service, strength in diversity, and belief in the human (et al) spirit. I'm so excited for you to dig in and fall in love!

Sam Langanke

There is Trek idealism and there is life realism. New things always frighten people, especially when they are a direct contradiction to the old and beloved formula. Picard not being american was a big uproar. Sisko not being white was a big uproar. Janeway not being male was a big uproar. Yes, also in the fandom. I have to admit that I myself in 1995 needed time to adapt to the idea that a woman is giving the commands and makes the desicions. We all are not Gene's enlightened future humans after all.

Summer

So excited I know technobabble annoys you, but without being a tech manual girl, I consider technobabble an essential part of Trek, one of 5 essential parts

Randy Watson

I'm pumped! DS9 is my fav series of all time (not just Star Trek!) but I still enjoyed Voyager and love specific characters from the show. Also Janeway is fucking badass.

Sam Langanke

I am surprised you don't speculate that much. No comparison to your DS9 predictions which many of them turned out to be false of course. Where you hesitant this might happen again or was it a problem that cleary Alex had not the same knowledge as Josh?

Rich Loga

Back in the 1970’s Paramount had tried to start their own network, the flagship show was going to be Star Trek: Phase II. When the network launch fell apart Star Trek: Phase II was reworked into Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Also the executive that was trying to start that Paramount network in the 70’s went on to create the Fox Network for the 20th Century Fox studio. Since was Fox was seeing some success Paramount decided to revamp the old Paramount network plans, again wanting Star Trek as the flagship show, and they wanted a new series based on a ship so moving DS9 over was not in the cards. I think Berman & Co. would’ve preferred to let DS9 run its course and work on TNG movies for a few years before doing another series, but the studio had other ideas.

Summer

I watched all classic Trek the first time without knowing behind the scenes stuff, it was great. New stuff I am sad to know too much about. My fave TNG characters are Bev, Geordi, Troi, Picard, and Data. My favorite DS9 are Kira, Sisko, Jake, Nog, Jadzia and Miles. My favorite TOS Uhura, Scotty, Sulu, and Spock. To know my fave Voyager you have to wait till Enterprise beguns. I was 14 when it aired but didn’t watch til I was 26

Chris

Arex & M'Ress show up in the Peter David series; New Frontier. Woefully underappreciated book series. Sadly, we lost Peter David last year. :(

River Acheron

You know what, as much as I hate on this show as a whole....I am remembering some pretty good and memorable episodes! Now, I would not even put this in the same league as DS9 in terms of characters and especially storytelling....I suppose it's a fun show. And as I previously brought up, the bad and even horrific episodes are absolutely not boring...they are unintentional comedy to me. It is gonna be a fun watchalong for both Alex and Josh and for those of us who dislike Voyager and those who love it. I think when doing my own grades, I will do what SFDebris does and make it relative to the series. As in, Voyager has a much lower bar. For ME, mind you. An "S" here may be a B if it were a DS9 episode, etc.

THE Fans

The part of this first episode that blows my mind .... stop reading unless you watched it already... They k-lled of the most interesting characters in the first 20 minutes.

River Acheron

This is true. Voyager limped so DS9 could run. We can thank Voyager for that.

Jonathan

DS9’s blessing and curse was because it premiered during TNG people saw it and went nope screw this I like TNG better I’ll just watch that which led Paramount to write off DS9 and focus on Voyager to carry the franchise. That sucked that DS9 didn’t get the fans it deserved but it also got left alone to let Ira, Ron and the writers to do stuff you wouldn’t see on TNG because there wasn’t the fear of alienating viewers because they could go watch Voyager. Star Trek was the big draw of the UPN network from day 1 to Enterprise being cancelled because the whole network was. UPN started as a network focused much more on male viewers than the other networks. Due to syndication for the first 3 seasons DS9 and Voyager were on the same channel for me it’s just one was a network show (the network only ran 3 days a week early on) and the other was syndicated on a different day or at 10:00 after Voyager at one point.

Kaleigh

Are they sad that the “other woman on the box” did not appear in the first episode?

V G (Zay)

I think y'all's expectations are reasonable and well-expressed! Based on this video I think you'll really enjoy VOY and I'm even more excited to go on this journey with you 😁

EnigmaticPenguin

There's a really infamously terrible episode that I think would be hilarious if it was on Alex's birthday, per the discussion around the 30 minute mark.

The Defiant One

I was 15 when Voyager started and hearing Alex and Josh say they weren't born yet makes me feel old . 😂. I enjoy Voyager, not as much as DS9, but there are so many quality episodes to go on both shows.

Kimmo Siniluoto

Yeah. I think Josh did know more and did not want to spoil it for Alex.

TinMan_7B9

Imagine if he was born right around the time when THAT final scene first aired. That would be a hilarious twist of fate.

Pixels At Dawn

I think what I will say about Voyager is that some of my favourite episodes of ALL Trek are contained within those 7 seasons (or 6.5 I guess). While I do appreciate DS9 (now), I think, partly due to the serialisation, there aren't that many episodes that truly stand out from the rest in my mind. But then that may also be because I haven't rewatched DS9 anywhere near as much as TNG and Voyager. Suffice to say, there's a LOT of good to come.

TinMan_7B9

You don't have to wait long. Only 288 great episodes and 2 movies to go.

Edweirdo

Back in the late 1980's there was a subscription service where you could buy all the "Star Trek" episodes on VHS. They would send you 2 tapes a month for what ever it cost. I figured out that it took me 5 years to get all the tapes and cost around $1000 in the end. In the late 2000's during one of my moves I threw away all the VHS tapes I had since my VCR broke and DVDs were the future.

Lovok

I would say there are a couple Voyager characters that can stand up to the best of the previous shows, one of them not being in this Pilot episode. Voyager's big sins are inconsistency, lack of risk-taking, and lack of a cohesive vision/direction for the series (beyond the basic premise). These flaws cause a lot of frustration at times. A whole lot of boring in this series, but the incredible episodes sprinkled throughout and its standout characters make it worth the slog.

bab

You guys may already know this, but the weirdness of the DS9/VOY launch timing was all network politics. When Paramount decided they wanted to launch what became UPN, a group of syndicated stations was trying to form their own network, PTEN, to be headlined by Babylon 5. Both PTEN and Paramount were competing to get independent station owners to sign on board with them. Paramount Chairman Brandon Tartikoff maneuvered things so that DS9 would be announced before PTEN sent out their official B5 announcement to undercut PTEN's tentpole series: "Why would you want to join PTEN? We've got a space station show with a bigger brand name and a bigger budget." The only way to get that announcement out before B5's was to have DS9 be syndicated, because UPN wasn't going to be ready for launch in time for DS9.

Trillhouse

"Wtf is UPN?" - Translated for Alex and Josh: The network that created WWE Smackdown.

Rich Loga

I also wanted to add that UPN did not have affiliate stations in all the U.S. TV markets when Voyager launched. For the 1st couple of seasons in the markets with no UPN affiliate Voyager was syndicated just like TNG and DS9.

jon bolton

My first experience of Voyager was 1995 when i was 15, a friend at school lent me the first Season on VHS. At the time i was only a TOS fan, i loved it. I look forward to watching the pilot with you next week, but you have me in the mood so i'm going to watch it right now too.

Lovok

I think Josh's expectations will put him in a very healthy headspace for Voyager. Beginning to think they might actually enjoy Voyager a bit now.

James Johnson

The premier episode is by far the best "first episode" of all the Trek series, in terms of setting the scene, introducing characters.

Actuarial Lurker

The Voyager DVD sets were $149.99 per season in the 1990s as they were released while the show was running- so all 7 seasons was $1,050 for plain DVD- no blue ray etc

Actuarial Lurker

I was 29 so I am turning 60 this year! and TOS debuted in the year that I was born...

Actuarial Lurker

Voyager routinely drew 7 Million to 10 Million viewers per episode because it was targeted a the mass UPN audience with more generic "safe" content and DS9 would get 4M-7M viewers per week and appealed to an older audience with Ronald Moore doing more intelligent content. My overall take on the VOY versus DS9 debate is the difference was NOT having "network suits" force mass appeal content on the writers and having Ron Moore letting the DS9 writers loose. VOY had better looking shows since it had to be impressive as the flagship UPN show while DS9 could keep that brooding, dimly lit, atmosphere

Zenlike Creature

Fun Fact: The original casting choice for the Voyager Captain was Geneviève Bujold, who only completed two days of filming before quitting the show. It still seems somewhat unclear as to why she left. What could have been.

Reunion_K

i watched a clip of the pilot with Genevieve Bujold and i must say Kate Mulgrew did a much better job

Actuarial Lurker

Since they've seen the 2 part pilot and are watching the first regular episode already I can now say the following: - if you look at the Lone Ranger and Tonto, or the Kung Fu series from the 70s or other Westerns from the 50s to 70s you get the classic epsiodic trope of "our heros need to eat and work to survive so they have to stop in a town. They chase away the bad guys in black hats, help the widow with a farm, etc etc and its all resolved in one epsiode and they move on. This is what TOS was. TNG has more variety since there is more continuity from being in the broader Federation yet they still have the alien or problem of the week DS9 has to deal with consequences being set on a station- you don't fly off like KIrk did after phasering the giant lizard computer VAAL and say "trust me bro, you don't need a computer to live" and then never find out how much he F-d up their society. At the same time they are dealing with Badmirals, Cardassians, Bajoran politics so there is a richer world building and lots of interaction even if they aren't the masked guy riding into a new town. The serious consequence of Voyager's entire premise are good and bad after seeing the pilot - there is no Federation- they ARE the Federation- so no Badmirals, Janeway has crushing moral dilemmas and no peers to bounce ideas off since Chakotay as far as we know is a rebel, so there can be new plots and twists from seeing how a Captain has to "wing it". Case in pouint being blowing up the Array and screwing her crew over to save the Ocampa - being in uncharted territory so all the aliens, politics, tech, etc can be NEW which can be interesting, but also feels unmoored- without the familiar you are more like TOS then TNG by design since you can't bring in a Badmiral or a Klingon story etc to mix it up BUT unlike a Western the premise has a big FLAW. If its 1880 and I am far away from home to use a Western analogy, I would NEVER stop in every town to deal with the local Sheriff, Bad Guys etc. since I'b be trying to get home. I would get on that newfangled railroad and not ride a horse to every town. So by analogy one can already sense that Janeway saying "we WILL explore new civilization etc with a primary focus of getting home makes NOT MUCH sense. I'm not going to stop to analyze a gas anomaly or help some rando alien race when I have to get home by any means necessary. This necessarily makes episodes where Janeway wants to explore, help people etc seem like her being off-mission and wasting time. But if they don't stop and do these things the show has no content other than trying to find another Caretaker or a wormhole like the one near DS9. No matter WHAT they do once you have travelled X light years you will eventually leave the region that race X lives in and will never see them again. So you are doomed to not have repeat characters like Harry Mudd, like kIrk you never see how you F-d up their society My conclusion is that they have painted themselves into a corner where many of the best parts of TOS, TNG and DS9 are hard to do. So the big question is HOW DO they keep the audience interested? It seems it MUST be character devlopment....we shall see...

Jack Molitor

From what I remember coming of age during VOY…it was billed as THE flagship show for UPN, and UPN in general seemed to angle for being “younger” and “sexier” and that definitely came through in the marketing. And I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say, I think a lot of the idiosyncrasies of VOY come through clearly as artifacts of the 90s specifically, in a way that DS9’s didn’t. I think they were trying to be hip in that moment for VOY specifically. And there’s good and bad to that.

Jack Molitor

The filmed footage for her is so interesting…it would have been a MUCH different show.

Jack Molitor

I mean…you can say what you want about Enterprise, but their pilot was pretty solid by pilot standards.

River Acheron

I wish I could list the things in particular I didn't enjoy. But major spoilers. So sadly, I have to be vague. Oh I agree that there are a few characters that I absolutely adore. But there's also some characters I couldn't stand and I don't know if I can say that about any other series. Maybe Wesley but ehhh. But yes I do admit it's an easy fun watch. It's not brilliant storytelling and you are spot on about the inconsistency. Also....studio fears and meddling which I will point on when it's episode appropriate.

Naglfarius

I guess you will really enjoy Voyager as a whole. We are still in the Era of Trek where the Makers cared.

EmptyDice

I would really love if you guys reacted to the featurettes after each season. They are very good and gives a great behind-the-scene look at the production that I think you would appreciate. If you don't have them in your boxsets I could provide them, if it isn't a copyright issue.

Morgan Garrett

I don't know... I think they're killing 2 birds with 1 stone by making occasional stops and studies - they're removing the tedium of decades long potential travel and also maintaining the goals and culture of their bedrock principles.. the same held by Starfleet and The Federation.

Trillhouse

30 years on, I now realize that I was probably being too hard on Voyager as it aired. In retrospect, I think the problem was that DS9 just set the quality bar so high, that tuning in to Voyager literally the next day felt so jarring. I now respect how Voyager was just stupidly fun and "comfy", and maybe there's nothing wrong with that. Also in terms of production, it's definitely one of the best made sci fi shows of the 90's, if not the best.

Pixels At Dawn

I do get the point but also how are you going to travel for basically the rest of your life with your focus only being on the trip home? And how are you going to find those technologies, wormholes and people to help you out without checking stuff out along the way? I think Janeway is basically saying "Our main mission is to get home, but we're still a science vessel." If they were completely single-minded in their trip home, I would pity all the science departments with nothing to do for 75 years 😂

tyranusfan

I just wanted to get it in before the first Voyager episode dropped 😁

Collin Freeman

Yes, UPN used Voyager in the same way Paramount wanted to use Star Trek: Phase II in the late 70's for their network that did not materialize (until UPN in the 90's).

David Kirk

I was fine with technobabble for TOS and TNG but I remember when I was first watching Voyager that it increased so much more that the ship tech almost became a separate invincible character.

Collin Freeman

She had no concept of how US tv shows were shot. She couldn't handle the pace, for 1 thing.

Collin Freeman

Elevator pitch: Star Trek does Lost in Space.

David Kirk

I liked Voyager a lot except for one of the characters and the overuse of technobabble. I think a lot of fans would agree.

EmptyDice

Danger, Harry Kim.

Travis Mc

I was 16 at the time.

Actuarial Lurker

That is why I think they could have had the Caretaker pull in a Cardassian ship with a Gul on board and have the Cardassians blow up the Array The first half of season 1 could be following BOTH Janeway and Chakotay as they try to get home, how the Maquis ship has to evade the Cardassians, have Janeway EARN the trust of the Maquis by staying close by to cov er their @ss and Voyager have to deal with not having a First officer or Chief Engineer or CHief Medical Officer. After a few episodes they could THEN agree to join forces and be one crew on one ship.... That is the impact of UPN- you have to be safe and God forbid have a 4 or 5 episode arc to start the series. Gotta have the ratings feedback right away. Does Neelix bring in the 8 year old kids? Do 11 year old girls like Kes? Do 18-35 females vibe with Janeway? It comes across as a series designed by political focus groups so they could tailor the writing to get ad revenue for the new network...

Weapon26

New Job: Morale Officer? Also, being a right-wing bigot... (Joking, but I am far from woke) Star trek (The good first four series) have always done an amazing job of making people equal without being obnoxious which is nice! Competent men and women doing amazing shit! Also, it's funny you guys are into wrestling and all that. I remember when Voyager was airing at the time, it was on before wrestling where I lived. I remember it being a big thing on the network. I'm not sure if it was RAW or something else, but the big night on UPN Voyager then wrestling. Also, you guys still have more good trek in front of you than behind you.

Raphael Gaytan

Janeway’s a WOMAN??? All this time and I never even noticed. 🤔

reactive1

Speaking of episodes that were aired when you were born, the TOS episode “The Tholian Web” was aired the week that I was born.

irohtheteamaster

To answer their question my mom had every episode of TOS on VHS in the 90's lol

Carsten Tassilo Gräbe

My two cents. It's a good series, but it could have been so much better. It has one of my favorite Star Trek episodes and one of the worst. P.S. And I would have put different characters on the box

Cranky Grandma

They had these shows planned for some time. They knew voyager would be the ship show. They didn’t plan on it based on DS9. DS9 was fairly ignored by the suits (especially after TNG ended). It’s interesting that you guys are slightly spoiled. I think you are going to be far more spoiled after Vegas, hopefully not too much. I think you guys will enjoy voyager. It’s trek so there will be good ones and cringe ones. Because that’s what you get with Trek.

Cranky Grandma

I’m glad we got Kate Mulgrew. She’s fantastic.

Matchstick Jose

Someone has probably mentioned this, but TNG actually started airing nightly in reruns on local stations while it was still on the air. Does anyone remember when that started? I want to say maybe season 3 or 4. So you could catch up on episodes you had missed. That’s how I managed to eventually get all of TNG on VHS. I would cut out all the commercials, the opening titles and the closing credits, so each episode would clock in at (I want to say) like 42 minutes and 20 seconds? I could fit 8 episodes of TNG or DS9 on a six-hour VHS tape that way. So, a lot of us were not just watching episodes one time, but over and over on VHS tapes we had recorded ourselves.

TC Green

We didn’t have a UPN so the local NBC aired UPN shows late at night. We got Voyager at midnight on Fridays, and then on Saturdays after SNL we got WWF Smackdown once it came along. And that was how I got into wrestling because I didn’t have cable to watch Raw.

Elizabeth N

Great discussion! I really hope you enjoy Voyager for what it is. Technically speaking, it probably isn't the best ST show but I don't care. I will always defend it. ESPECIALLY when it's bad!

Summer

If they had connected Janeway to Sisko in the pilot, or Dax that would have been great

Todd

I truly think Voyager was trying to distance itself slightly from the darkening tone on DS9, so we do see more whimsical episodes. Though there are some dark episodes of Voyager. I will be extremely excited to see your reaction to one particular Voyager episode that appears early in S3 of Voyager.

Derekm82

Hey, I liked those DC shows! Hehe…

HeatheЯ

Ahhh, Voyager.... I'm here for it... I guess. Okay, I'm here because it's you guys Alex and Josh. I am glad I watched it beginning to end years ago. And there's a couple things Voyager does exceptionally well. But there are a couple actors that I feel are just terrible and never get any better through the entire show. On the other hand there were 2 characters that were sooooooo AMAZING, stole my heart and added a layer to this show I didn't expect. I'm interested to hear their analysis of the show as it finds it's groove.

Kaleigh

Good things come to those who wait 😊

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

There have ALWAYS been crazy 'woke' people who wanted to inject black and female captains not out of a mindset of "who cares", but purely because of DIVERSITY and POLITCAL. Their crazy has always existed, and because of that there have always been people alert and on the lookout for when those crazy people would get their way. They have been sounding their 'anti-woke' horn forever, and while they were absolutely early in the case of "BLACK SPOCK QUESTION MARK???", what they were trying to warn us about was real and their warnings were legitimate in the end. It just wasn't an issue... yet. Thankfully Sisko and Janeway were just "wouldn't it be neat if" and not written for purely political diversity quota bullshit reasons. No real attention is called to it and so it feels like the writers could have just flipped a coin when writing episode one and then just went with whatever result they got. It's a different kind of character to write for, so it's fresh, and that's good. There is no agenda being pushed along with these decision, at least not yet. But make no mistake. This is the era of 'proto-woke' where a permissive environment for their crazy nonsense allowed their cancer to foment and grow unnoticed. We didn't get lesbian space witches out of no where. Eventually we will get to a point where it is used to rub your nose in it by morons who need ideology to come before the quality of characters and story.

North

This will probably be where I become a more sporadic subscriber. 😅 I've tried to watch VOY three times over from different entry points (including the one where folks whose taste I trust assured me it got good), and just bounced off of it. But I hope you fellas have fun with it!

Prof Moff

This was great!!!!

Strekonline.com

I did the exact same thing with taping and cutting out commercials - for all the shows until I had a whole library because I wasn't going to pay $20 or so per VHS.

Strekonline.com

Voyager and then Enterprise were both the "flagship" of UPN. They were the most watched programming on UPN during their entire run. Unfortunately, they were the most watched programs on the lowest rated network that wasn't available everywhere. Locally for me we never did get UPN. Voyager ended up in syndication on on local ABC affiliate at first on Sunday nights, then on Saturday nights but not until the summer between the third and fourth seasons.

Strekonline.com

We never did get UPN in our market. Voyager eventually became available as syndication on our ABC affiliate during the summer between the 3rd and 4th seasons. But DS9 in our market aired overnight so that wasn't good either.

Strekonline.com

Where she finally earned a well deserved Emmy nom!

Strekonline.com

I got ripped off. I think I paid $179.99 per DVD set for all the series back in the day. Still better than the $20 per VHS with only a single episode each before.

Strekonline.com

Speaking of which, I'm waiting for their reaction of a certain episode long into the future.

Katie Jackson

Star Trek The Search For Spock was released 2 months before I was born. I have always loved that movie, my favorite of the OG movies are 2,3 & 4. They make their own trilogy which is usually what I want to watch when I watch anything TOS. Voyager and Enterprise are very underrated. A lot of people have been starting to realize how good they are with New Trek being out for awhile now😂 I've seen them so many times, I could close my eyes and tell you what was happening in just about every episode. Still, I'm dying to watch them again with you guys! Sunday can't get here soon enough🖖🏻

Some Guy

Woman? I 'ardly knew 'em!

Strekonline.com

For us it was the ABC affiliate. At first Sundays at 10pm, then Saturdays at 10pm, lastly Saturdays at 6pm. Voyager didn't become available until the summer between Season 3 & 4. Thankfully they also started syndicating the older episodes around the same time for me to catch up on.

Stick with Voyager! I had a similar experience with DS9. I love TNG and Voyager, and over the years I have tried to get into DS9 numerous times and I couldn't even get past the pilot. It wasn't until recently with some of the disappointments of more modern Trek that I finally was able to watch DS9 from beginning to end and could develop an appreciation for it. I'm still more lukewarm than most DS9 fans... there are things I came to really like about it, but there are still things I just don't care for. My point is, don't give up on trying with Voyager. It is different from DS9, but if you stick with it, I think you'll find it does still have a lot to offer!

Josh Overton

after tomorrow, 13 days between DS9 episodes?? I'm not happy about it.

Katie Jackson

I was 10 when it premiered. My little sister was 27 days old.

I have to chuckle when I hear Star Trek marketing and wrestling marketing talked about together, so I will share a spoiler-free anecdote. For the last few years of Voyager's run, Voyager aired in the same time slot but different day from WWE SmackDown, so we were constantly exposed to wrestling advertisements on pretty much every ad break. This probably says more about UPNs golden child SmackDown than it does about Voyager. But in at least that part of Star Trek's lifespan, UPN execs were seeing an overlap in their Target Audiences of these two programs. (pun intended)

Paul Fitz

My favourite series, love them all, but voyager is where my heart is. Favourite captain also.

BN13

For me, the one I struggle with is Enterprise. I appreciate it, but I've never been able to get past the first few episodes.

North

Nah, I'm good. VOY isn't my flavor of Trek, and life's too short.

Actuarial Lurker

BN13- I watched Enterprise first run and stuck with it....Season 3 is strange and Season 4 is actually pretty good and probably where they should have started the series. This show has potentially some of the best episodes in ALL of the original six series before Paramount started pumping out pure $hit the last few years

HeatheЯ

Wait, what! I must look at this.

JoeCensored

Can we all stop making vague hints at what's to come? You're not as clever as you think. These comments are full of vague spoilers.

Crewman #6

Well no but yes. Wow. An interesting sort of pivot on your expectations for what you want this Star Trek to be. Heh. to say without spoilers... How about you guys write your wants on bingo cards? Because... Well. You'll see :)

What you've said here is exactly why I consider Voyager to be the worst Trek series. As bad as two of the recent shows have been, their premises were not violently antithetical to their approach to episodic television. It's not so much that any given Voyager episode is bad in isolation, but rather that the context surrounding each episode would warrant more urgency out of the characters. Every time they sit down and relax for a moment, let alone engage in recreational activities, I'm infuriated with the show. This situation is a dire emergency, and the Enterprise crew(s) would have treated it as such. Not a single crew member should be walking around without bags under their eyes at all times, desperately trying to get themselves out of this situation by hook and crook. But we're not only getting the Starfleet crew being all casual about it; we're getting the Maquis going along with it rather than seizing the ship by the end of the pilot and slaughtering their way back to the Alpha Quadrant if necessary! Is that "good Star Trek" by Gene's definition, o Voyager writing staff? Absolutely not. But you're the ones who decided that some of the lead characters should be terrorists!

Mark Wood

I actually like Voyager and Enterprise pilots better than DS9, though I very much like DS9 the series far more.

How shall we put it. Hogwash. PTEN's tentpole series wasn't Babylon 5. Deep Space Nine aired starting January 3, 1993. PTEN's tentpole series (Time Trax and Kung Fu) started January 20/ 27th. Babylon 5 the Series started Jan 26th, 1994!!!!! PTEN did air and promote a TV film, that aired in February 22, 1993. DS9 not only aired before the TV movie, it also started production (construction of sets, makeup design, casting, ect), and filming before Babylon 5 did for any of those things for the TV film, the Gathering. Babylon 5 the series wasn't green lite until the summer of 1993. By that time Ds9 had already aired 16 episodes. Was Paramount in competition with PTEN in for affiliates? Sure, in the same way that the NFL was in direct competition with the XFL for players, meaning not very damn much. TNG was a behemoth in scripted syndication. Significantly stronger than anything including half hours scripted programming, Due to the strength of TNG, DS9 was actually sold into more markets than what TNG aired in. And how would a new Trek series, be in competition with a TV movie. Please, explain how that makes any rational sense, Now JMS has stated that DS9 copied Babylon 5. Primarily due to his pitching it to Paramount, before DS9 nailed down that its setting would be a space station (initial concept was for it being a planet bound outpost). But he has also stated that he has no evidence that Piller or Berman were ever shown his pitch or told to make it a space station setting instead of planet bound. But the spin off that became DS9 was formed not because of any push from Craft/WB push into syndication. With the results from Final Frontier, and the studio decided to make a final (and planned it as such) TOS film. They wanted to transition TNG to the film stage, and they then wanted to create a replacement series to air in syndication. They also wanted to make sure that replacement series would air at the same time as TNG was airing to cross promote the new show. That was what decided when the spinoff would be produced. DS9 was never, ever intended to be part of a new network. The show started development before they even had hearings to change the FCC laws. UPN and the WB made a rush to start new networks after the FCC changed its laws (April 1993). UPN was founded in October 1993 (the WB September of 1993). Early development of Voyager started early 1993. It actually started a bit before the law changed, as the hearings gave indication that the law was going to be changed. Paramount new they could;d start developing Voyager (early development), and even if the law didn't end up changing, they wouldn't take a financial hit on development as Voyager could be produced and distributed through syndication. Because of that security UPN was able to launch with an extremely well polished TV show, in relationship to the rest of the lineup for both UPN and the WB.

I can't wait to watch this with you guys. It's my favorite Star Trek. I bought the 1 year subscription to patreon and bought the voyager full series DVDs because apparently Paramount Plus doesn't sync with the DVDs. Spent almost 200 dollars just to watch voyager with you guys. I love it!!!!

Actuarial Lurker

Strekonline- I bought them on sale! I think they WERE 179.99 at first release right after each season ended. I bought them delayed- like getting the Season 1 DVDs while Season 4 was on etc, so they would be marked down...

Voyager is interesting to me as I like it the least out of the 3 90s shows. DS9 is my fave, TNG is a close second and Voyager in last place. With that said, I think Voyager got some of the best scripts and stories out of all of them. There's a lot to love about the show.

L J

That's not how I remember it. As I recall DS9 was struggling and Voyager was set up to return to the roots of Star Trek and make fans happy again. Yes, all the executives focused their attention on Voyager, which allowed the DS9 showrunners to have greater independence in carrying out their ideas. But that was a fortunate coincidence of the circumstance, not the whole reason Voyager was created. And Voyager was never limping any more than DS9 was. Both shows had pretty comparable ratings and given that Voyager was on a new network, that was really pretty impressive.

Tasha Yar's Positronic Vibrator

Personally, I love TNG, I love DS9. I merely like Voyager. It's usually fine, sometimes It's good, and sometimes it's fucking great. But it's mostly kinda mid. In saying that. Janeway might be my favourite captain. And two of my favourite charactors in all of Trek are from this show, so.

Voyager will be a fun reaction for me. It started at the peak of my fandom as a kid, but by season 3 or 4, I was in my mid teens and had moved on. Thus, unlike TOS, TNG and DS9, I had not watched the entire series as a kid, let alone read the books, tech manuals, etc. that were so integral to my love for the earlier three series. Sure, I caught some episodes from the later seasons, but I can't say I've watched the entire series. Thus, some of this will be a first time reaction for me too.

Matchstick Jose

Yeah, I wonder if Berman and Piller and Taylor ever considered using Sisko, instead of (or with) Quark. Maybe Avery said no, but so odd to not have a scene of them in Ops together, one lead character handing it off to the next again.

Loot Narsbaar

I've never re-watched Voyager, but I just re-watched s1 just for you.

Mark Wood

Strekonline For clarity I think it should be stated as their pilot episodes were the top two episodes that ever aired on UPN. "Watched programming on UPN" might lead some to believe that those two series were the top two series on UPN, which while Voyager does still hold the title for full series, Enterprise doesn't even make top 5.

Andy Catton

I know there are a lot of “DS9 is the best Star Trek” folks on here, and that’s fine. DS9 is great. I’m a huge Voyager fan, so I’m excited for you to enjoy it. Something you should know, and this isn’t a spoiler, is that Voyager is really good at doing high stakes stories. You’ll definitely feel that episodes seldom skimp on the threat level. I hope you love them!

bab

"And how would a new Trek series, be in competition with a TV movie. Please, explain how that makes any rational sense, " At the time DS9 was announced in early 1992, the plan was for The Gathering to air in November sweeps 1992 and for B5 to start airing as a series in 1993. B5 obviously ended up getting delayed and DS9 didn't, but a January 1993 airdate was what Paramount needed to frontrun B5 as a weekly series given the information they had at the time. "But he has also stated that he has no evidence that Piller or Berman were ever shown his pitch" True, but Brandon Tartikoff was shown his pitch.

Looking forward to the continuing journey. I generally like all Trek through the end of Enterprise. Voyager may not be the most consistent show but it has some all-time great episodes. (Same goes for Enterprise - Enterprise's final season is a Top 5 ST season for me). Voyager definitely has many types of episodes of Trek you guys like, too, so have fun with it.

Marko

In-universe the events of Generations are after Voyager had already begun, so Enterprise is still around.

Mark Wood

Factually incorrect. This isn't a dig on any show, I am a ratings fanatic (and Voyager does well for Trek on Netflix) Since 2023 Netflix has started releasing viewer data every 6 months, we get three lines of data hours viewed in millions, total run time, and then total views. Total Views is the metric Netflix and commercials are interested in. As it judging an average per episode. Now Netflix reports only shows the Total views rounded to the hundred thousand. But you can get much more specific number by just divided the Total hours viewed by the total run time, to get a much more accurate number DS9 is consistently the least watched Trek live action show, followed by the original series. That leaves TNG, VOY and ENT. Average views (in thousands) for the three full years (01/23-12/25) TNG 247.98 VOY 260.76 ENT 279.04

Mark Wood

Colombia House subscription was two episodes per tape and a great 19.99 price (it was good for the time and unheard of for fairly new shows to get released to the public. Eventually Paramount did direct releases 1 episode a tape.....But the tapes I believe were 14.99 each...The laser discs (who remembers them) 2 episodes a disc for 29.99. And sweet Jesus have I spent way to much money on Trek releases.......

Matthew Rudolph

I was 9 when Voyager debuted. Never watched TOS, TNG was my first trek, DS9 didn't capture my attention, until my twenties. Voyager drew me in and I grew up with Voyager. So my trio may be different from other Trekkies. Good, bad or meh I enjoy rewatching the show and being able to reevaluate the shows ideas and stories as I've grown up. Side note there is a new video game coming out focused solely on the this series, called Star Trek Voyager Across the Unknown.

Summer

It is such a great idea, usually when I watch a show with in 5 viewings I am speculating such things but had not thought of it here till Alex said so (an obvious reason I didn’t is I saw Voyager 7 times through from 2008-2013 then saw DS9 so I was more established with how Voyager was than DS9, though I have watched both at least 9 times since.)

Summer

With you! Voyager is a gem.

Rylee

Personally I feel like VOY has the strongest start of the golden age trek shows. Not to talk it up, after all it has its issues as it goes on, what show doesn't, but unlike tng or ds9 that have rocky starts VOY starts well.

Lyric

I love all 3 of the 24th century shows

ShazD

Yeah the sync issue is annoying af

ShazD

There's only one really poor actor in the show imo and they don't get that many episodes? IMO Voyager had some of the absolute best actors in Trek who hit it out of the park when given emotional material.

ShazD

No one dislikes Voyager because of misogyny lmao.

SierraNicole

Consciously or unconsciously, I'm sure it's part of it for a LOT of the haters. You can hear the microaggressions in a lot of common complaints about the series. That's just the world we live in in the 21st century.

Strekonline.com

I should have stated top scripted programming. America's Next Top Model and SmackDown did achieve higher viewership. For scripted shows, Enterprise during its final season averaged 2.8 million viewers and was still getting some viewership in the 3-4 million range. Veronica Mars, by comparison, averaged 2.5 million that year. Kevin Hill (which premiered that year and benefited from Top Model's lead-in) did top Enterprise occasionally, but not consistently and ended up tying with 2.8M average viewership for the whole season.

Scarpad’s Domain

my problem with voyager is it set up an intriquing premise and instantly ignored it. Had they had conflict between the Marquis or difficulties with survival. Instead it became TNG Lite. For me it's the weakest of the OG Franchise

Summer

I was born between the first two movies, when their birthdays are coming we should look up what episodes aired that week

Summer

I last watched Voyager 8 months ago, have been waiting for reactors

SteepHill

Wow. Spoiler central and arguably inaccurate too

So excited to be watching Voyager with you guys! As with TNG, I watched all of these episodes when they aired with my family so there's definitely some nostalgia there for me, regardless of any ups or downs along the way. Now it will be so interesting to revisit these episodes through your eyes and see what your reactions are, and whether my opinion will agree, disagree, or completely change. I can't wait to just scan the opening credits now to see who the writer(s) and director are!

Often Wrong Soon(g)

I found them when theybwat h TOS, saw them into TNG, but I knew e eryone of those episodes by heart. I watch DS9 for 5 seasons and Voyager for 2. Then life happened. Excited to finish both with a crew of folks and these two yutes.

Captain Super Voyage

You mean they didn't know that 7 episodes in they kill the captain and her first officer Tribble number 7555557 has to take over command?
