Since there were issues for international Patrons with accessing the 90-minute version of the episode we watched, I jumped ahead and edited the reaction. This is NOT the full YouTube video, only the reaction. The discussion & Patron Takes you can watch via the UNCUT version

V G (Zay)

dang, brother, y'all had a need for speed! thanks for the edit :D

Jovet

Tom Paris was *supposed* to be Nic Lacarno, but the royalty rights were too expensive. So they gave the actor a new character.

Jovet

The guy from "The Inner Light" was the first officer, killed in the beginning.

Jovet

The premise of the show is pretty great! The execution... eeeeh...

Jon1701

Thank you Josh 🙏

Vee

Thanks for doing this, I tried following the other version but it was like 2 completely different stories.

Numinous2019

Lacarno was too much of a narcissist, who would compromise everyone else and gaslight them. That's too much to rehabilitate for a main character. He wasn't just flawed, he was essentially bad in spirit. Having to switch McNeill to the more sympathetic Paris was for the best, since McNeill is a naturally engaging actor.

Neil

Thanks so much, I tried everything I could, the Paramount + version, the DVD version, making my DVD play in NTSC mode , nothing helped! Appreciate this

Numinous2019

I won't elaborate on this, but Voyager had to be separated from the DS9 continuity. It wasn't just about setting the new show in an unexplored Quadrant of the galaxy. Two TV shows could not take place in the Alpha Quadrant at the same time, without having to address the same overall situation.

Numinous2019

It's a wobbly pilot that relies heavily on the ability and likeability of the main cast. ST pilots are almost always either stiff or uneven and never entirely convincing. I did really like that we meet the initial Voyager crew (navigator, first officer, doctor, etc.) and they were well cast.....then they get killed off quickly.

ShazD

Thanks man! That means a lot.

ShazD

We don't really need comments like this when they have only just started.

Schnabley

70,000 miles away from Starfleet Admiral’s! Hip, Hip, Hooray!

Comrade of Chaos

The royalty rumor has been debunked. Numinous2019 is correct

Target Audience

Well yeah because clearly there would be no way the aura of both Jadzia Dax and Kathryn Janeway could exist in the alpha quadrant. It would implode.

Daragh Graham

Thank you guys, I really appreciate this! :)

EnigmaticPenguin

Always appreciate you guys releasing stuff early for us folks in the cheap seats when it's a big milestone.

EnigmaticPenguin

My head canon is that Voyager's original Chief Engineer who dies offscreen is Argyle from early TNG because it would annoy that whacky guest actor who started his own fan letter campaign.

THE Fans

Thanks for the special edit.

Laura Thornley

Everyone, I think they liked the episode. Just a hunch.

Target Audience

Well, the discussion is already available in the UNCUT version lol

Dani

Now Chakotay just needs to grow a beard and the show will be good lol. Just kidding but seriously in my opinion Voyager is good from the 1st episode.

ImageMaker

I watched this unedited a few days ago (without a 2nd screen). I'm still going to watch this whole thing again.

penoyer79

and like the other star trek shows - gets better as it goes

Numinous2019

Mulgrew was an experienced stage, TV and film actress. Terry Farrell, although always professional, was an inexperienced actress (former model) who was the weakest actor among the DS9 cast. Dax was a difficult role for a young actress and Farrell was game, but didn't have the know how to pull that part off.

Target Audience

I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Lt Dan I Scream

I’m sure you’ve heard it now. But the story about Paris. He is the same character .. well they wanted him to be. But they didn’t want to pay the writers from first duty the credit for him so they make a new character with the same guy similar back story.

Seraphina

I'm just gonna say it (sorry Spock), but Tuvok is the best depiction of a Vulcan in all of Star Trek. He perfected what Spock began.

Brian H

The showrunners did want basically Nick Locarno, they just didn't want his baggage. In the casting, they even asked for a Robert Duncan McNeill type actor.

Actuarial Lurker

Exactly right- McNeill was on the "D-Con" YT podcast (don't watch it until later since it has many spoilers) and he said that his agent called him and said the producers had just put out a description with his name in it, that he and his wife just had their second kid and he was looking for better pay since he had been a regular 3 years on a NYC-based soap opera that didn't pay well and he just went out to LA, showed up for the audition and was cast. He also said that he is NOT Locarno since in First Duty that character was reckless and got people killed and then tried to have Wesley cover up what was happening while here he had an accident and first lied about it and then tells the truth> So less "baggage" as you nicely put it.

Captkirc

Not to get all nerd on you guys but Spock was an accurate depiction of a half human half Vulcan so no apologies to his depiction are needed

Breakingthenotion

Upn had some restrictions voyager compared to the Trek that came before it but the writers of voyagers were able to adapt to it.

Cranky Grandma

Tuvok is the best Vulcan since Spock. Janeway reminds me a bit of Kirk. Vulnerable only to close friends and very much a strong smart captain. The conversation between Janeway and Tuvok reminded me of Kirk and that first doctor in the second TOS pilot (where no man has gone before) and sometimes with bones.

Summer

The issue with Nic Lacarno/Tom Paris, as someone with a writer/editor’s mind, I can have a hundred ideas through the writing process, that doesn’t mean something was ‘planned’ maybe the idea was floated and one person clung to it and reported it. Writing is a many splintered thing, since the character only resembles Nick, and the actor and other creatives agree Tom is completely different except in appearance, Tom is not Nick.

clone1138

Here is my advice for watching the entire Voyager series. Watch it and enjoy it for what it is, and not what you'd want it to be. You're going to have a lot of questions about logistics or where so-and-so is. It's best to just ignore that. It's still a great series with some banger episodes. But it's also not without some serious flaws that will quickly be revealed. Have fun!
