Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

I could never buy into the idea that Jadzia would just chuck everything and run off with some guy she just met a week ago. If she were actually in her early to mid-20s, I might be able to believe such impulsive behaviour, but she has the life experiences of over 3 centuries to draw upon. She would know better than to make a 60 year commitment for what may turn out to be a fling during Spring Break

Fire and Bloodwine

This is an episode I try to forget. That's all really. C for Combs

Brian Salas

Aside from the really good character moment between Dax and Sisko, this episode is a turd. It feels like a generic sci-fi technobabble story they plugged ds9 characters into regardless of actual character development.

Ja Dav

Trill put the symbiote's well being above all else...it's been stated already. That she would remove it forever from the social life cycle to enter into this weird existence AND subject it to the transporter scrambling is a violation of her society and totally out of character for her. I give this one a D.

JimmerVision

This one's a bit meh. It's not horrenous and watchable or anything, it's just a little bland.

THE Fans

Here's the problem... it's so easy to like your reactions... but i stil watched it with you guys and didn't give a stembolt about the episode, to the point that all i remember is Jadzia in some bad cgi. I can't even remember a B plot. "E" all the way for me. Ship it to the Eternal void. A few good moments and good acting can't save it.

ScarlettMi

It wouldn't remove it *forever* from the social life cycle, would it? It would give it 60 years of a completely new life experience that it hasn't had the opportunity to experience before. Aren't new experiences something they want to provide for their symbiote?

TalynOne

Pretty forgettable, but not actively bad like The Bonding.

Ken R

Someone had an interesting idea when they said "what about a planet that flickers in and out?" but then they really didn't know what to do with it. I gave it a C for the idea , but this episode was a big nothing.

Phantom Lake Games

I don’t hate it but that’s about all I can say about it.

parz1fa11

eh. it's a cute story but Dax abandoning her promising Starfleet career to be with a guy she just met is very unbelievable and out of character. I give it a C, not awful but bit cringey

Numinous2019

If Dax had been shown to be frustrated or disillusioned with her career in previous season 3 episodes (or there was some issue that led to emotional turmoil), then this episode probably would have been more effective. I know Dax isn't leaving the series, so it's a mechanical process of watching how she doesn't leave the series.

Numinous2019

If they'd hired Gene Kelly as Dax's love interest, moved the location to a Scottish-like environment and made it a musical/dance extravaganza, I think it would have been an S.

Numinous2019

And if Jadzia became seriously ill and the symbiant's continued existence was in question? No alternative Trills available.

Numinous2019

I think it's time the Bridge Crew added Brigadoon (and Casablanca) to the options Josh and Alex might watch.

Nick Anderson

For me this episode had an interesting premise. A planet that phases in and out of physical reality?! Awesome! But the romance aspect seemed... Off? It felt weird to me. With zero previous inclination to leave Starfleet and having only known this guy for what... A week? I believe this episode could have been better served exploring the philisophical aspects, verses a rushed romance. Idk, maybe it's just me.

Scott in Scotland

The Sisko/Dax bye byes scene lifts this out of the average and into B. I reckon it would be more liked if it had appeared in season 1 or 2 but here it's surrounded by loved and beloved early classics (yes I include Past Tense as a classic) and so is very much out of it's weight division. Would you agree?

Scott in Scotland

I actually watched this react during a week where I have to visit Ayr (where the real Brig o doon is) twice.

TinMan_7B9

DS9's Dumbest Disaster doesn't deserve detailed discussion. Did desperate-dude dose Dax's drinks? Did drunk Dax's doubts disappear? Did delirious Dax demand decadelong day-off? Definitely dubious decisions!

TinMan_7B9

hmm, let me think.... No, not really.

Crewman #6

A matter of taste indeed. I'm almost completely jaded by one episode love stories. Even more so one that involves changing your entire life for someone you've known a few days? While I wouldn't pan an episode just for that. This is Jadzia Dax, unattached hedonist melded with lifetimes of wisdom, ready to step away from Starfleet and the life she had for this guy. I guess that I am one of those where something can well ruin an entire story. The whole abusing images of Kira sidebar I found more interesting. Since you guys are already on Voyager backstage - I wonder if this kind of story would've fit better with one of that crew. That said, reviewing with you guys yes. The performances of Terry, Avery, Frakes and backstage crew were great.

I feel like Dax is perhaps the most inconsistent character in Star Trek. It's like she changes based on what they need for an episode. Sometimes she is playful, relaxed, spontaneous, frivolous, live in the moment, free spirit type of person. Other times she is deeply structured, disciplined, wise, and precise. I want to like Dax. But I can't figure out who she's supposed to be and that just ruins it for me.

Joe J

What happened to Dirty Harry?

giuseppe scigliano

I definitely liked the B plot more in this episode ( so much so that I forgot it’s part of this one) , with that being said , there’s really nothing wrong with the A plot … it’s just not as interesting… but it’s fine . So luckily the main story has a strong B plot that elevates it to a B

Sony

Would've been better if Jadzia's love interest could act

DthDisguise

Tarry Ferrell absolutely acted her heart out in this one, and gave an flawless performance. C.

Emodramabomb

Didnt buy into the idea that they form a bond fast and strong enough over a few days to make Jadzia make a decision to take herself out of time, coming back to find out everyone she knew and loved was dead, for the next 60 years. Due to that I was super harsh on this episode, gave it a D.

Loot Narsbaar

No more dangerous than going into the Gamma Quadrant and getting captured by the Jem Dahar

ShazD

Dax was totally out of character, it was ridiculous.

Ja Dav

A real world race like this that lives multiple lives would be likely to be rather stolid about all of life's experiences. Falling in love, becoming a parent, coping with death of friends and family...even a host's first time experience these would not technically be the first experience.

Scott in Scotland

That's sort of the point isn't it? She's multifaceted via the symbiote?

Kaleigh

E for the absolutely despicable sex-predator who goes completely free. Not even Jeffrey Combs can save that bastard.

Vexx

I am going with B. Mostly because I am totally down to count her spots any time. That has nothing to do with the letter grade, it was just a great line and it has stuck with me for a long time.

jon bolton

B. Another good Dax episode.

NzingaAuset

I gave it a C. I didn't hate it but it made no sense. lol This hilarious Trek content creator named zilatreks did the funniest parody of this episode on her TikTok/IG.

L J

That's the excuse they use, but it doesn't work for me. It's not supposed to be a variation of having multiple personalities all fighting for dominance. The successful Trill who are joined learn to balance the several personalities inside of them and incorporate all of them to be one consistent, balanced person while drawing on the knowledge and experiences and strengths of the previous hosts. But I feel like we never know who Jadzia is. We know Dax the symbiont, and we know Curzon and some of the other previous hosts, but I want to know who Jadzia is. They make such a point of saying that she is not Curzon or the others... she is Jadzia. But they never make it clear who she is. To me it's just sloppy writing because they can't figure out who the character is supposed to be, so she changes to fit whatever story they want to tell.

Elana Resnick

Brigadoon in space! That said, I really enjoy this one. Not a top episode but a solid B for me. It loses a grade for the quark b plot. Yuck

Brett O

Everything about this episode is terrible. A-plot is another Trek warp speed romance where we are supposed to believe that Dax will give up everything for a guy she just met? Gross. Nothing about it comes off as believable. B-plot is creepy af and not even Jeffrey Combs can save that creep fest. Worst episode in an otherwise solid season. It's an E for me.

Summer

Its funny how different things impact people
