Great, now that you have seen this one you can check out Mel Brooks' masterpiece "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". It's the perfect follow up!

WEB

You gotta start with Prince of Thieves so Men in Tights lands like it should! Drives me nuts when I see channels watching Men in Tights without even getting what it's parodying

Harry Broos

A Robin Hood without an accent is a faux pas that I can't overlook or forgive

WEB

I don't think its a big deal at all lol 😉

AdamPacio.art

You made an off comment on the whole "Robin, take a bath" line. "They didn't have soap back then, only water." You actually got it backwards. Soap was invented around 3000 BC. Humanity didn't have any problems with soap, and if you want a movie that'll underline that fact, go watch Fight Club. lol. The reason folks didn't bathe frequently was the water. Both spoiled and infected wells before germ theory was understood, and the fact that there was no real central heating (which is why they wore all those clothes) meant that exposing the body to water could be incredibly risky in England and Western Europe at the time. You'd catch a cold, and that was a life threatening thing. Funny enough, England had superior interior heating technology from the Roman occupation, but it was the association with Roman paganism and fast and easy lifestyle of soldiers in brothels that made England in the Dark Ages claim that cleanliness was a sin, and copying the Roman under-floor heating was "ungodly" and "decadent". But they had no issues with having soap. I know, you were kidding, but you know better than to rely on folks catching sarcasm in offhand comments. ;)

Thank you, WEB. Probably an unpopular opinion but I actually like this one a lot. For sure this Robin Hood has the best villain and a great cast overall. Thanks guys for making it through the extended edition.

One of my top 5 favorite movies ever. It's a blast

StonyD

This was a good date movie when it came out in theaters. But even back then, the heaviest criticism of the entire thing was Costner's wooden performance. The rest of the ensemble really lifted the movie from mid,. And I would rate this as Alan Rickman's second-best performance in anything (Die Hard being the best, with Galaxy Quest, Dogma, and Potter coming in behind it). Also, this really helped cement Morgan Freeman for the era as well, while Slater's star surprisingly seemed to start fading after this in the public eye. Not sure why.

Collin Freeman

Not one of my favorites, but it does have a good cast, for the most part. I like Uncle Morgan’s character who was shoe-horned into this story. And of course, you have Rickman, so…

Collin Freeman

Sean Connery’s presence was a bit of a wink to the audience. He played an older Robin Hood in a 1976 film called Robin and Marian. Worth checking out.

WEB

and, him and Costner were in The Untouchables together a few years before this

I really liked this movie so I decided to rent it from amazon for the watch along. (which I did) then pressed play to hear Josh say its THE EXTENDED EDITION!! haha Damnit! But luckily amazon had that version to.

startrekiborg

I always loved this movie, but I never saw this extended version, interesting. It does create one problem. There is no story line of the scholar having his tongue cut in the theatrical version. So, with it in the story, it makes no sense for him to be able to tell Robin where the Sheriff went at the end.

WEB

Only the extended version is on blu-ray, no theatrical! But yeah, at least there is a streaming option

Katie Jackson

I Love Robin Hood. Recommend the Russell Crowe version too. From the director of Gladiator, he did years of research and made the story as authentic to the time period and what English records have on Robin Hood. Definitely check out the Directors cut if you watch it.

Numinous2019

In 1938 the same studio produced 'The Adventures Of Robin Hood'. WB should have just re-released that classic instead of bumping a script written for TV up to a movie. The film lacks action (strangely action footage was left out), has uninspired story elements (strangely some resolutions were also left out) and the sense of low-key desperation involved resulted in Rickman's tonally misaligned comic characterisation. If anyone is arguing for this movie, then remember that the 1938 film set the standard for this type of adventure film.

Skye Maidstone

He has an accent. A weird American sounding one. Kevin didn't even seem to try.

Collin Freeman

That 1938 version with Errol Flynn is my favorite Robin Hood film by far.

Thicketdweller🦊

Robin Hood : Prince of Malibu if you notice Costner tries to do a British accent most of those are as I understand it early in the shooting schedule and he finally just quit one day on set and I think that because he was trying to be an alpha male actor and Sean Connery was around and he doesn’t attempt to do anybody’s accent. He decided he would start doing the Sean Connery thing cause I haven’t heard him not butcher an accent.

LonghillAndy

How did the witch get into the barred room at the end that robin and Nottingham we’re fighting in? 😂 Also liked how you called out the “first curse word” when the f bomb was dropped, what’s funny from a brits point of view was the numerous cuss words that are common to a Brit, we love a good use of the word bollocks (testicles for those that don’t know). Really enjoyed this watch along guys thank you very much for taking the time to do it for us as usual

Ken R

The Errol Flynn movie is a perfect film, and it seems impossible to surpass it. The roles were all cast so perfectly and the colors and imagery is just as good. That film you don't need introductions, you just look at a guy and you know it's Little John or whoever.

Jeff Cornell

Looks like the extended addition just adds some extra scenes with the villains. The main things absent from the theatrical version are no scene of delivering the bribes to the other nobles and showing the Celts before the battle, and no story about the witch spying on the sheriff and being his mother. In the theatrical version, it seems more like she's just a genuine witch.

Astral Project

Tried sinking up and watching along, but I think I have a different release version or something. Scenes are out of order or directors cut or something. I got frustrated trying to find my way back to where you guys were in the movie. Hope you both enjoyed the movie. I know it's not the most popular Robinhood movie but I always loved it

penoyer79

you guys liked this one a lot more than i thought you would

Philbot

Special edition? All the witch scenes were cut out for the theatrical cut. Scribes tongue was cut too. 😉

Scribe31oz

You realize now, you'll have to watch Men In Tights. Also Sean Connery and Kevin Costner was in The Untouchables together which more or less catapulted Sean Connery pack to A-list status again. Connery won an Oscar for that role and Rickman was nominated for the Sherrif.

Laura Thornley

Alan Rickman's performance was great - and so very strange. I love all the little ticks and unnecessary details that let you know just how weak Nothingham's grip on reality is.

Boggle

I watched this movie so many times. Although the third act not as much. Two reasons for this: HBO had this in their selection in the 90s pretty much non-stop. Also, at some point as a college kid, my roommate and I couldn't afford anything, and our only tv options were PBS and whatever VHS collection we had at the time. This movie was one of the 15-20 VHS tapes we had, so we watched it. A lot. The movie kind of falls apart for me in the third act. But I love the first two acts. So, I've probably seen the first 2/3rds of this movie 50 times. And the entire movie about half that.

John A

I do like this movie, not as much as I did when it first came out. Now the performance by Alan Rickman was awkwardly and strangely great, loved it. i do like Costner, but he just played Costner and seemed out of place, which I would say was criticized a lot at the time, if I remember correctly. Still a fun movie to watch.

captveg

IIRC, the scene where he gives direction was shot after they knew his tongue cut out sublot was gonna be dropped, thus introducing this continuity discrepancy when they went back and did the extended cut. The extended version is fine, but the theatrical is better paced even if you lose some of the witch/sheriff story.

captveg

Thankfully, Arrow is releasing it on UHD/BD in May 2026 in the US with both cuts. (Already out in the UK).

WEB

Good to know!

Forbidden Donut

I'll echo what has previously been said: Now that you've seen this, you should see Robin Hood Men in Tights".
