Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

If that woman is not the single most frustrating and infuriating character in all of scripted television, I would be very interested to know who took the top spot

Back Flip Bet

Those are uniforms of the bajorian milita. Red and maroon for command, brown for security, gray and gray for operations, gray and green for engineering, orange and purple for medical(bajorian nurses helping Bashir in the medical bay).

Bert

IMO, one of the best Bajor-focused episodes.

Matchstick Jose

I also remember being confused that it wasn't a work from O’Brien. Feels like Ira went around the writers room asking: “Anybody got an ending for this B story? Ron? Rene? No? … Fuck it. His bum shoulder. Let's go home.”

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

Speaking as someone who dislocated his shoulder at 24 and over 30 years later, it can still pop out if I move in just the wrong way.... I don't think Chief was faking anything. Reaching back like he did is the perfect way to get a janky shoulder to pop out of its socket

Back Flip Bet

Some people don't like Skylar White lol

Summer

I like this one more than I used to. The Kai being so deluded is irritating. As a Christian I don’t go around saying everything I do is God’s will.

Summer

Galiteb was Duet not Li Nalis. Remember the Cardassians have only been gone 4ish years

Mysticist

You guys talking about Kai Winn political attack ads made me think of all the potential political ads and such you could have in Star Trek. There's a ton of Gul Dukat memes about Making Cardassia Great Again. But personally I don't think anything can beat the slogan, Gowron 2028: Your Blood Will Paint the Way to the Future!

TalynOne

Another case where they should have spent more time on the A story of the Chief's dart game. The B story of the Bajoran stuff didn't really contribute to the A story.

Zenlike Creature

A solid episode that, for me, develops the backstory of Kira, the motivations of Winn, introduces some of Kira's friends from the resistance and expands the current political set-up of Bajoran politics going forward. I'd have liked a bit more with the B Story though, it could have had some entertaining and fun elements.

River Acheron

In terms of anonymous directors, you are correct. Hellraiser: Bloodline. The 4th one. "Alan Smithe" I believe it was. It was mostly due to entire sections getting cut and studio meddling. I mean I liked the movie, but it could have been a LOT better!

Erik L Jerks

My back is the same way. I can go out and play hours of volleyball no problem, but step off a curb wrong and I'm immobilized for 2 days.

Elizabeth N

This episode is pretty much a 'it's good, but I don't love it' one for me. Using Kira's old resistance cell was an interesting idea and I wish we'd had more of it. Kai Wynn is a fantastic villain however she's used.

Sykonee

This episode aired on May 22, 1995. The RAW main-event of that same day was Shawn Michaels vs King Kong Bundy in a King Of The Ring qualifier. Oh right, the KotR that Mabel won. Jesus, the dregs of New Gen'... 'Shakaar' is one of the most Fine episodes I can think of. Good stuff scattered about, but retreading familiar ground too, probably why it doesn't leave as much of an impression as previous Bajoran Politics episodes.

Christopher Bartow

The problem with terrorists is they can never stop being terrorists, even if they achieve their goal.

StonyD

I personally find the Bajoran politics, rebellion, Maquis, and Badland stuff my least enjoyed element of the entire Star Trek franchise (1966-2010). Whether it's the heavy-handed Indian analogies in TNG or the plodding Kira-romance/past-terrorist-boyfriend stuff, I have a hard time tuning in or caring. Probably why I was so put off of VOY's pilot at the time. But the Bajoran religion stuff is awesome. Kai Winn is the single saving grace. That actress is so good at making me hate her character that I cannot throw shade on such talent or performance. I'm always glad when we get past these episodes, though.

William Roberts

When you don’t know if it’s a work, and you work a work and work yourself into a shot…brother. Much love.

Ryan

"Politicians breaking promises to serve their pet projects" is a theme that will unfortunately never go out of style. And on top of that, we get Ronin! And caves, and fun desert stuff! Both plots are pretty slight, but I love these characters and this episode uses them well, so it's a lot of fun. Worth the price of admission just to see Colm Meaney say "in the zone."

Derek Locke

Cliffhangers weren't about making sure you knew the show was coming back. It was all about building your anticipation so you were more likely to return after a long time away from the show. Not that you would forget but that you might lose interest and not come back. It was also an event, because back then we weren't used to shows leaving you hanging, It made it feel special.

Derek Locke

It was so obvious that it was a work that they didn't need to tell you!

THE LORE!!!

In terms of using pseudonyms for credits, it's actually pretty common to do it for reasons not being associated with it in an "Alan Smithee" kind of negative quality way. There's a lot of dumb bureaucracy in the way some studios work. Silly rules that have good intentions that end up hindering it. I know on the BBC, when they were making classic Doctor Who, script editors (closest thing to a showrunner at the time) weren't supposed to write their own scripts so they had to do pseudonyms all the time to get around it.

Erik L Jerks

Kia-ria Law will now be implemented, my child.

Ryan K

Hell yeah, the lead security officer is John Doman, aka Bill Rawls from The Wire. "I wanna see you land okay, Kira. So tell me, where don't you wanna go?"

Matchstick Jose

You know, if they hadn’t killed Li Nalas, it feels like you could have pretty much done almost this exact episode with him instead of Shakaar, and then it would really make sense that he would come in and instantly be the election front-runner. I think I remember that Piller regretted killing Li Nalas off? It does feel like kind of a waste of a potentially strong recurring character.

Paul

Personally, I think the acting for Bashir and the Chief was so overtly corny that they felt it was enough of a signal that yeah, this is a work. Also, the fact Chief suggested Quark bump up the odds to 15:1 - I don't really need direct confirmation. The Low Cortisol Terrorist Chad. This episode is extremely fascinating to me because every individual scene is probably in the A-tier range, and yet together, still good, but yeah maybe B? A very rare time where it's lesser than the sum of its parts. Not sure why.

Steven Linden

The one before "penultimate" is the "antepenultimate".

Matchstick Jose

I think part of the problem is that the stakes don’t feel very defined? Like, the show had already been treating Kai Winn like she was the leader of Bajor. I mean, she’s personally negotiating treaties for the entire planet. Also, the opening trilogy of season 2 did a much more exciting version of Kira stopping a takeover of the Bajoran government. This can’t help but feel anticlimactic compared to that, IMO.

Doctor Pulaski

This should have been a two-parter - and Past Tense a single episode.

Laura Thornley

I really want to disagree with you, but I can't think of an example to counter with. Which makes me uncomfortable in admitting you're probably correct.

Marko

You mentioned Shakaar being a terorist group leader, and that is correct from the Cardassian point of view. But for the Bajorans he is a freedom fighter and a war hero. I don’t think Kai Winn would stand a chance if she ran against him. I would agree this would be a high C or a low B for me.

Laura Thornley

Technically they didn't 'steal' the machines - they just refused to give them back before the original deadline. Technically they were the wronged party in having the arrangement altered suddenly.

Steven Linden

"A good episode that's surprisingly dull" is a good way of putting it for me too. Not that the whole thing is boring; it just doesn't really stand out for me, despite having a lot of good ingredients and scenes.

Marko

I don't think she would. I think Kai Opaka would as she was with the people during the occupation. Kai Winn was in the occupation as well but not as known. Granted, she is credited for peace talks with Cardassia, but I don't think that is enough to surpass a war hero. EDIT: I saw my grammar error :D

Loot Narsbaar

It’s probably because we don’t get to see other Bajorans react.

Collin Freeman

I am inclined to agree with your opinion on the politicians episodes, and I actually feel the same way about the Bajoran religious stuff, but I agree: Louise Fletcher is just so good, she is the 1 saving grace for me.

Collin Freeman

Except for the stuff on the station with Chief O'Brien, and Louise Fletcher herself, I find the rest of this episode to be a yawn-fest. Probably a D for me.

JordanK1991

I really like this episode. Nothing spectacular but every time Winn shows up, you know something fun is about to go down.

JordanK1991

A solid B+ episode for me.

Jonathan

Whenever Jonathan West was the Director it also promoted all of the people who worked under him for that week to the next higher position so the camera operator became DP and so on down the line. The writer of this was the person who gave Ira his first tv job so Ira was returning the favor.

Jaymison Boeker

Easily Tony’s mom from the Sopranos. She takes the cake.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

"And if any of you have been... uh... unfortunate enough to be in a car wreck... you just might wanna look away right now, folks..."

tyranusfan

This was supposed to be Li Nalas' story. But the actor didn't want to commit to a long relationship with a TV show (he was a stage actor mainly), so they waited a while and brought in Shakaar to fulfill this plot. (And, yes, Odo is a member of the Bajoran Militia, the Security branch)

Loot Narsbaar

Winn was struggling in the election until Bariel bowed out. She won by default when Bariel would have won in a landslide.

Vina

It's really interesting to me seeing so many people yawning over this episode. I has a fair bit of tension, especially at the end. The A plot ostensibly seems to be about Kira and Shakaar and Winn, but it's really just about Winn. It's showing us her real political instincts, which are to very rapidly escalate a situation instead of putting any real effort at compromise, an approach seen by the biggest dumbasses in politics lol

Dead Hedge

“Is Mark Twain gonna figure it out!” Fantastic

TC Green

I haven’t heard that Hell in a Cell bit in a long time. Still a great bit.

Spacecataz

Shakaar when the credits rolled

Sykonee

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, but still, can't help feel something was lost when Vedek Winn became Kai Winn. Comparing her far more calculated, conniving scheming in The Circle Trilogy to this, well...

Cranky Grandma

A yawn for me. With a couple of exceptions including Kira and Kai Winn, Bajorans are boring

BN13

Absolute power doesn't corrupt absolutely. It reveals what was already there, just waiting for the opportunities that power provides to reveal that hidden absolute corruption. And Winn's political instincts are the same as any narcissist which I am convinced that she is. "People aren't listening to MY authority? Fine. I will MAKE them listen." They have no interest in or understanding of compromise, or even consequences. They only understand their own control, and the need to enforce it. The only way Winn knows how to solve this problem, or any problem that she'll have in that office, is to make all decisions herself, and force all dissenters into submission without even hearing anyone out. She even thinks the prophets are testing her on how well she is able to force submission. She doesn't care what anyone else's side is but her own. Even the very people she's supposed to be representing and governing. She doesn't understand that this position requires understanding and diplomacy, not arrogance and brute force. All she had to do here was recognize that Bajor isn't ready for exports yet. Getting their own farms back in order is the first priority. She should have just waited a year for her pet project like what was originally agreed. But she's like a new manager swooping in changing everything trying to prove to their superiors that their new project is going to revolutionize the company. And even then, she reveals in this episode that this whole thing ultimately has nothing to do with her project, but with her own power. The whole point of the project was to help Bajor get accepted into the Federation, but when Sisko refuses to do her dirty work for her, she threatens withdrawing their consideration for membership. Then she immediately tells Sisko that this is actually a test from the prophets to see how well she can force others into submission, because she's convinced that's what the job requires. And yes, I also find this episode outstanding.

Numinous2019

I'm going to have to keep reminding myself that TA is a reaction channel, not a review channel. In the past I've argued about specific episode reactions, when that's the entire point of the channel. So, Josh & Alex, while I may have different reactions to certain episodes, it is your channel, these are you personal responses and you both are very talented (although not always 'right'....only I am always 'right'!).

Cranky Grandma

Don’t forget we couldn’t rewatch a show. We saw it when it aired or we didn’t. Sometimes there were summer reruns but they could be out of order. Summer was a time viewing habits could change. DS9 wasahead of its time in that it’s more suited to streaming than 90s TV.

Avaria

It's true. Unless there was a provision in the original agreement -- which we are never privy to -- that the government could reclaim the machines at any time, Shakaar's group is wholly in the right here.

Numinous2019

I'll be very interested, once you've watched the season finale, to hear what you think of Behr's SEASON AND 40% OF A SEASON as showrunner.

Avaria

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention that Shakaar is sexy-candle-guy

Avaria

Vote Eyeballs McGee in 2373!

Imogen S

I wish I could watch The Expanse, I love the books, but the guy they cast as Captain Holden has the most punchable face I've ever seen and I find it so hard to focus on the show 😅

Ryan

The guys caught it way before I would have, and that made it even better. I'm glad I had that knowledge for the whole episode.

Ken R

You guys are seriously talking about the merits of this garbage Darts crappy boring non-story a week after talking about how I don't wait for diamonds.

EnigmaticPenguin

You'd be shocked at the benign activities that can cause a shoulder injury. Mine popped out of the socket reaching for toilet paper in a public bathroom while taking a dump. My girlfriend at the time was an LPN and popped it back in.

John M.

I wore out one next season two-parter so much my tape went black and white.

TheSisko

Wait…. Was the end take that we wanted more plot? 🤓

BN13

Then you are a good Christian. Kai Winn is not. She's a warning. I think a better comparison for Kai Winn isn't a Christian, or any type of normal religious person. She is what I would call a "spiritual narcissist." That means, she is a narcissist first, which ironically, is actually evil. I am convinced that the two go hand in hand with each other, to the point where you can actualy define one by the other. Or at the very least, they follow the same path. What makes her a "spiritual narcissist" is not that she is a spiritual person. It's that she's decided that the area where she should be exhaulted, be the ultimate authority, and have the most control over others is with spiritual matters. That's why all that matters to her is being Kai. That's her realm. Now most narcissists don't realize they are doing evil. They are completely deluded and misled by their own ego into thinking that they are actually doing the ultimate good. In their mind, they can be nothing less than the absolute best. She probably truly thinks that she's the only person in the world who actually understands the prophets, and all others are lost or blasphemers. That's part of why she addresses everyone as "my child." That immediately places her above whoever she is speaking to, and implies that compared to her, they are like children in their spiritual understanding. She believes she's doing God's will, but the reality is, she's probably the one who understands the prophets the least. She thinks that her will and her undersatanding is the prophets' will and understanding, when in reality, everything she does is actually against the will of the prophets. She uses the name of God as her personal sheild, without understanding anything about God, and actually doing evil in the name of God unknowingly. She thinks she's the master, but she's actually the devil's (ego and evil's) slave. Bariel exposed in an earlier episode that Winn didin't understand concepts like God (the prophets) having mercy, forgiveness, or unconditional love, or that anyone else should strive for those things either, because she doesn't. She also views interaction with the prophets as purely conditional, as something reserved only for those who are worthy, because that's how she thinks about everything; it's all conditional. Bariel understood the prophets more than she did. And Kai Opaka, (say what you will about her as a character) was in the show mainly to show us what the Kai is SUPPOSED to be. She was introduced to show the audience right from the beginning what someone who is as close as you can get to the prophets acts like. And Kai Winn herself admitted in earlier episodes that she didn't understand Opaka's views (especially regarding the Emissary) and disagreed with a lot of what Kai Opaka said. If you don't understand Kai Opaka, then you don't understand "the will of the prophets." Kai Opaka may as well have been an actual Prophet embodied on Bajor; not Kai Winn. People like Kai Winn are a warning because they exist in all faiths. They don't understand the faith at all, but they think they embody God's will, and are the sole authority on the faith. These people mislead millions. People in need turn to them for spiritual guidance only to be used, abused, and slaughtered for these narcissist's personal gain. Just like what Winn did to Neela in "In The Hands of the Prophets." I guess you could say that these people are "false prophets."

Summer

That is an excellent analysis, so many define religious analogy to one or two things but Spiritual Narcissist is the best way to describe the majority

Loot Narsbaar

Adjusted for inflation VCRs retailed at $330 in today’s money for a basic model

Loot Narsbaar

Eh, it’s both good and boring at the same time

Loot Narsbaar

30 years of watching and rewatching TNG/DS9 and I didn’t realize Shakaar was Ronin until you guys did Sub Rosa

Kimmo Siniluoto

I used that only to watch borrowed and bought movies. I was too lazy to record. Too bad for me! :)

Sunny

I love Sisko throwing shade at the Kai at it going right over her head - telling her she is in the role of the Cardassians and she doesn’t even pause to consider her choices

Doug

I gotta be honest, when I find out it's a Bajor episode my brain just checks out. I mean yeah it's kind of important for Bajor lore, and Kai Winn is always great, but man I still just don't care about Bajor.

Jason Aud

Yes, Odo and Kira wear Bajaoran Militia uniforms. Looking up specifically what they say happened between age, prior damage and repetitive motion/strain it happening in the circumstance...never really found it an issue. We do see him dislocate it more than once haha. Decent enough episode, had forgotten than he was also the ghost from Sub Rosa....but I try not to think about that prior episode alot lol. Was curious about how another lesser plot episode would go.

Kerplang

Damn it McNulty!

L J

You saw ONE frame in advance and it just so happened to be Kai Winn?! What are the odds??

Kimmo Siniluoto

Shoulder issue is real deal. Miles O'Brien did have problems with his shoulder back in TNG episode Transfigurations. But it is true that is totally very gag like. And told little bit funny way. And even Odo indicates in Heart of Stone episode that the injury has happened "up to half a dozen" times, establishing it as a chronic issue. So lore is there for Miles O'Brien's shoulder. So I think it is running gag from writers. But real thing for story of this episode.

Forbidden Donut

Again: They couldn't just replicate or build more of this farm equipment? They just had to make do, planet-wide, with the ones referenced here? They couldn't ask the Federation for help with this (making more of them)? Really?

JB

shakaar when the walls fell

Sam Langanke

I don't believe you are real anymore.

David Kirk

His acting as Shakaar was much better than Ronin.

JB

Dislocating shoulder reaching for a drink does seem a bit contrived, but I don't think Chief would get involved in match-fixing. Or at least prime chief wouldn't. #visionarygate

Mark Wood

Please I video taped each episode editing out commercial. Easily watched each and every episode a dozen times sometime far more before the next weeks episode even making a backup of each just in case.

Paul Verburg

To answer a question you had that you probably don’t care that much about: No, most of the time in darts you don’t aim for bullseye. The highest value spot on the board is the “triple 20”, which is the small red rectangle directly between the bullseye and the top of the board. But don’t worry, I don’t think the writers and directors of the show know how darts works either.

EnigmaticPenguin

If Kira’s terrorist cell had been fighting for the sex candle alien it would have elevated this episode by at least one full letter.

Anonymous Science

Some materials cannot be replicated, such as dilithium and latinum. And replicated things are of a lower quality. They mention multiple times that they can taste the difference between replicated and non-replicated food. So there is a plausible in-universe reason for the McGuffin. The bottom line is: "If you're wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts, just repeat to yourself "It's just a show. I should really just relax"." The need for the McGuffin outweighs the need for a negligible amount of verisimilitude.

Sykonee

Schrödinger's Bajoran Episode.

KingPin124

I didn’t either, but that’s because I hadn’t hone back to watch Sub Rosa in more years than I can remember. Probably skipped it many times.

KingPin124

It has never once even crossed my mind that the Chief faked a a shoulder injury. It’s been so well established about his recurring injury from TNG to DS9. Frankly, I very surprised your thoughts even went there. You think Starfleet officers go around rigging sports betting?? That doesn’t just screw over Quark, but it’s also cheating their fellow officers and civilians alike. Maybe that could happen with a couple of the less upstanding Starfleet types or the Maquis on Voyager, but Chief and Bashir engaging in sports racketeering? I’m not sure you understand who the characters are.

Tim Nikiforovs

Just don't tell them about "preantepenultimate"

Tim Nikiforovs

Also peace with Cardassia might practically be a good thing for Bajor, but to a lot of Bajorans it could look like she's cozying up to people who were oppressing them just a few years prior.

Richard Stone

The filming location was actually Bronson Canyon rather than Vasquez Rocks and it’s been in even more Star Trek episodes including This Side of Paradise and Bread and Circuses. It’s just a short hike from the Hollywood sign

Tim Nikiforovs

@BN13 I would agree. I think the reason everyone thinks power corrupts is because the personality traits that tend to aid in acquiring said power in the first place are generally less than altruistic. Dark triad types who have the drive and ruthlessness to attain power in the first place and no longer feel constrained to "play by the rules" after they do.

sword bard

People talk about "when the show grows its beard" for TNG but I think it applies even more to DS9. Sisko gets better and better as they finally start letting Avery Brooks wear his preferred styling.

Tim Nikiforovs

Ronin got tired of shagging 30 generations of human redheads, and decided to start a new tradition with Bajoran redheads

Tim Nikiforovs

I mean, to be fair, Picard having an artificial heart started with him rigging a game of Domjot. But I agree, chief has a chronic shoulder injury and clearly the episode wasn't implying he was faking it. The scene just wasn't executed very well.

Tim Nikiforovs

Yeah, I'm with the common consensus on this one. It's not bad, but less than the sum of it's parts. I agree with Column's take that the dinner scene was one of the best of the episode. Furel and Lupiza are fun side characters. Shakaar is ok, and if he does become first minister could be a good ally to Sisko and his crew the way Bareil was, though he would have more influence to actually help. The one Colonel was pretty reasonable all things considered, and it's nice to see the military pushing back on Winn trying to be both pope and president. Winn's narcissism is pretty evident when she tries to justify almost starting a civil war as a personal test by the prophets. Sisko just standing there like "I always knew this bitch was crazy". Not to mention she caused the whole thing by reneging on a pre existing deal. A couple other comments have compared this one unfavorably with the Circle trilogy. I don't hate the Bajoran politics/religion stories, but I agree this is a pale shadow of what we got in the 3 parter. The new movements in Bajoran politics and the characters introduce make this ep feel more like a stepping stone to later stories, but the question remains if they'll do anything with all that, and if it'll be satisfying. But as for the episode itself, too little actually happens to make it memorable. C+ for me.

Loot Narsbaar

In addition replicating shit takes a shitload of energy

BN13

I always interpreted that even though they can taste the difference between replicated and real food, that doesn't mean that the replicator is bad, or lesser quality. I don't view it like a tv dinner or anything like some people do. If you remember back in The Neutral Zone, when someone from our time tried a replicated martini, they said it was the best martini they ever had in their life. Plus, there is an episode in the future in one of the shows that strongly suggests that replicated food tastes amazing to people who have never tried it before. I figure if any of us today ever tried anything from a replicator, we'd be blown away and never want to cook again. However, if replicated food is all you've had your entire life, then I imagine after a while you'd be able to taste the nuance. Maybe replicated food actually tastes "too perfect." Like maybe replicated food is all restaurant quality or better, but sometimes you just want the imperfection of a home cooked meal. Especially if you always know that what you're eating isn't really real in that sense, and probably tastes slightly like a nutritional supplement if you really pay attention.

BN13

The bullseye actually isn't the highest scoring part of the dartboard despite what all tv tries to show you. The highest scoring part is actually the triple 20s on the inner ring. Those are worth 60, the bullseye is only 50.

Bert

I don't think Kira is actually number one target on Kai Winn's list right now. The Kai might be angry with Kira, but the top spot on her list at any given time would be occupied by those who pose the most significant threat to her plans. Kira may have recently caused her problems, but the Kai understands Kira's priorities. She can plan based on when Kira is likely to intervene in her schemes. Kira isn't a constant nemesis; she’s just someone who disrupts her plans when their paths intersect. That's something the Kai probably feels she could strategize around.

BN13

I completely agree

BN13

I'd say Winn failed that test pretty hard.

Gary Lewis

Yes, it is him and he later on worked for one of the other producer writers from Star Trek and became Zorro

Loot Narsbaar

Gorn rocks, and the cave set! 2 MVPs in one episode!

Avaria

Honestly a bit surprised at how often Josh and Alex have brought up split-season cliff hangers over the past few episodes. While it was done for the majority of TNG's seasons, it's not been the case with any of the other shows to date, including DS9. DS9 does have a habit of introducing new story elements in the last episode of a season (Winn and Bariel in season 1 & the Vorta and Jem'Hadar in season 2), but neither of the finales were cliffhangers. Not sure why they seem to be anticipating one.

Loot Narsbaar

Home cooked meals can often be better than restaurant quality

Loot Narsbaar

Plus him having no aim after having rotator cuff surgery is on point without doing any rehab. It takes an MLB pitcher a year to recover from such an injury currently.

Todd

I can't remember if I saw this episode back in the day. If I did, it didn't make an impression. Seeing it now, I agree that it was solid. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I really enjoyed the interaction with the Colonel in the canyon, probably because of the actor John Doman.

Loot Narsbaar

They haven't healed their trauma from Time's Arrow and Decent and quite frankly neither have I

Loot Narsbaar

In a ideal world where you could re-write this I think you cut the dart sub-plot and to something to raise the tension. Watching this for the first time in years, I think the B plot really hurts the A because it is just nothing. Kira is a wanted woman with Bajor on the brink of civil war and everyone on DS9 is shooting the shit playing darts? I doesn't go well together. Ideally you'd be able to drop that plotline and punch up the pace after the dinner scene to try to add more tension. Slow pace then fast can be really effective. Maybe show us first hand what the reclamatiors can do or SHOW us something, anything, rather than telling us what is happening with Bajor's near upheaval... but that probably would have blown the budget. Still, not bad in spite of it all and I especially like the scene where Kira, Ronin, and Colonel agree to cease fire.

Bert

It is killing me waiting for episodes to come. Both good and bad. Both Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Not necessarily for explosive joy or snark. I have no way of knowing if they'll love episodes I loved as much as episodes they loved a lot more than I originally did. But it's killing me.

KingPin124

They just confused the shit out of me. In my entire life, from everyone I’ve ever known who has seen this, has never implied that they fake it to steal money or that it would’ve make the episode better.

Naglfarius

I'm not a Fan of Bajoran Episodes, but this one was good. B+

Summer

Same, never thought Chief was faking, I suspect there are missing scenes

Loot Narsbaar

The Chief seems like the most honest man there is. Starfleet officers don't lie cheat or steal.

Ca$hWednesday

Oh, it's that other ST episode with Temu Michael Douglas!

Aaron Wells

I don't get it. Kira is a member of the Bajoran military. A major. DS9 is a Bajoran station. Bajoran military personnel on DS9 don't have different uniforms than the rest of that military. Why would they? On the Station or the on the planet...its the same military...why would they have different uniforms?

Aaron Wells

Doman will always be Frank Sobotka to me.

Aaron Wells

Pretty sure its been established clear back on TNG he's got a bum shoulder.

Aaron Wells

Replication also uses a GIGANTIC amount of energy. Perfect energy to mass conversion? INSANE. Works on a starship because you've got a massive matter-antimatter reactor to draw from. But on a war ravaged planet out in the sticks? They're growing crops to feed people instead of just replicating nice juicy steaks for everyone for a reason. Replication is logically a very limited solution to problems...bottlenecked by energy availability.

Aaron Wells

If you know, you know. The Wire needs more attention. Still one of the greatest shows of all time.

Aaron Wells

It's my very favorite scifi show. Too bad it causes such suffering. :(

Aaron Wells

I don't think he was security..,I think he was mainline army.

Target Audience

Yeah I put all that together eventually just give my brain a few minutes

Loot Narsbaar

Starfleet seems to have had different uniforms for space station / not space station until Voyager

reactive1

Definitely the most mis-matched A & B plots ever. The season is wearing pretty thin. C

Regarding Chief's shoulder and your inability to accept such an injury: My dudes, there will come a time when you get to a certain age where you will sneeze and throw your back out. When that happens, I hope you can look back to this episode and say "Ooooooh! Now I understand Chief!" 🙂

Yeah, but I've always had trouble meshing that with my headcanon. I told myself, it must be they have a specialized uniform for the fleet... But then every single time we saw any Starfleet personnel anywhere, they always had the same uniform in TNG. Then of course Voyager came along instantly wearing ds9 uniforms. Then generations came out and that was all mixed up...which kind of makes sense if it's in transition. I think they just desperately wanted to get away from those weird old uniforms with that angular swoosh in the abdomen. They wanted more black, something that looks better on screen. I think the Voyager ds9 uniforms look great. TNG uniforms have always looked sort of silly to me... Especially the early ones that didn't even have collars.

You don't even have to be that old, when my sister was in college she once dislocated her knee just by bending down to tie her shoe! Also, injuries from repetitive actions are WAY more common than most people realize, I worked in a warehouse for a couple years and saw it all the time (and still have my own chronic pain 10 years later). People assume it's the heavy lifting that gets you, but more often it's a seemingly easy, casual task that you have to do 1000 times a day that really fucks with your body.

He asked why the Bajorians chasing them have the same uniform as Bajorian security on the station..It's because Kira, Odo, Bajorian security on the station, and these guys on the planet are all part of the Bajorian Militia. Kira is a Major in the Militia. That'd be kinda like asking why are those guys on earth wearing the same uniforms as they do on the Enterprise.. because they're all Starfleet

I think it would have been better if O'Brien had intentionally thrown the dart competition, but I actually have injured my shoulder like that. The motion that O'Brien made is exactly the same as the sort of motion that my weakened shoulder could no longer tolerate (in my case, I could no longer reach back with my left arm for the seat belt). Granted, I didn't need surgery or anything, but surgery is the sort of thing that people with chief's multiple dislocations eventually have to go through. I similarly had Quark's reaction, where I was like... "what the hell, why did THIS injure me? I didn't do anything."

As I get older my body has less tolerance for painn or little injuries than I used to, clearly the Chief has reached an age.

i'm surprised that people think O'Brien actually hurt his shoulder. O'Brien was clearly acting there. it was a "work".

Having had both rotator cuffs repaired, I can tell you that fraying or tearing can happen without some huge traumatic injury. I was a dart player, and I can tell you there was no way to throw a dart with an injured rotator cuff.
