Why is she startled by the necklass?

JeffMakesGames

Swift looks surprised by Rask's rock necklace. Also, she doesn't look angry in that last panel. Is that... others coming to the rescue? I see others with spears on the way... maybe sheer numbers of them with this weapon might actually scare her away.

SJ

Is she surprised to see them working together? Namely, prey protecting a (small) predator? And that they haven’t scattered, they’re staying as a group.

KiraKurotsuchi

Crazy how he missed. So darn close. Though those stones hurt too. Toss enough and they’ll cause her brain damage, lol. Quick, someone get inspired and make a slingshot, lmao.

treefiddy

I think Swift just realized that the Hollow is much bigger than she originally thought on the last panel. Her only experience thus far has been the 1st scene, which was only like 6 total people Actually that other comment made me think, cotton is also throwing with his left hand. Is handed-ness a common thing in this world? Humans are right handed about 85-90% of the time, which is fairly unique in the animal kingdom. I think the only other animal that shows clear one sided handedness is kangaroos, which are predominantly left handed.

Grey

I don’t suppose she expected them to defend Rask! She asked before if this was how weasels are starting to cache their food, as a joke. It makes sense she wasn’t impressed by him trying to keep her away from the other animals; she thinks they’re his prey. The other way around though? That’s going to be new to her. Also, for those confused, she’s not surprised by the necklace. It’s the spear that shot between her legs.

treefiddy

To be fair, he threw it with his (likely) non dominant hand. If so, it was a pretty good shot all things considered. Throwing with your non dominant is HARD

Julian Seguin

Oren used ROCK! It’s not very effective…

Krzysztof K

Honestly, Swift could play the lottery; she'd definitely win millions with her plot-driven luck (P.S. this is starting to annoy me a bit). It would have looked better if she'd at least been grazed by a spear (more realistically). Hemlock killed the wolf on the first try. The Hollow animals somehow fail. I know this encounter is supposed to prepare them for what's coming (that predators can't be trusted), but really, not a scratch?!

Uzuri

For those wondering how he missed... that's not a throwing spear. And I think we've primarily seen them used as two-handed spears until now (I could be wrong). It'd be badly balanced for throwing, it's a stabby stab weapon. And we need Swift for later. XD.

treefiddy

I'm going to be big mad if Oren doesn't name his new spear throwing technique after the peccaries he met in the conclave, aka javelinas

treefiddy

It was bothering me too. Like, I know it's accurate to Swifts namesake that she's fast and can dodge things. But she's still much larger than the other animals and size isn't an advantage for speed or agility

Sarah

Poor Sybil I hope she’s not dead but it’s really looking like she is

Krzysztof K

It's not just that she's fast. On the other hand, you have Rasek, who has already lost so much, both family and friends.

Flann Moriath

I wonder where Rask is going… maybe he’s going to get fire? That was something that seemed to really scare Swift in the last volume.

Microgrampup

The next surprise is something Rask hasn’t warned her or Red about. Hunting, like a pack.

treefiddy

Yeah, to be fair Rask did cut her paw pretty good on the last page, so she isn't quite getting away scott free (outside of the Quills in her face) But I seriously hope Sibyl is just injured and not dead. Especially since she didn't follow the most basic porcupine instincts, and that is: "butt towards enemy". Not sure why she turned to face Swift after nailing her with her tail. If she is dead, thats just salt in the wound

Krzysztof K

I meant something more serious than scratches and thorns (okay, she was scratched). Butt towords enemy. Here's a good example of Swift's luck

Microgrampup

Makes me wonder how bison reacted whenever her pack made a successful kill. Did they just accept the death and run away hoping that the one lost life meant the pack wouldn’t go after the rest of the herd? She really seems to not understand that the power dynamic basically makes her and her family look like dumb, arrogant coyotes that thought they could safely den in the territory of a wolf pack and an assault on its members would somehow scare the rest into hiding rather than result in being hunted down.

Grey

Good question! We saw bison circling the sick calf in Run, so we know they have the same basic defensive posture in this world that they do in nature. I imagine the wolves try to get herds to stampede so they can choose a target and bring them down during the chaos. If someone is already dead or gravely wounded, the bison COULD deny the wolves their meal by driving them off—but the body will attract more predators, so they’re kind of forced to abandon them.

Latias

I wonder if they're going to let Rask back in considering... he saved Swift in the first place, and she followed him here. I hope Sibyl isn't dead... but it looked like Swift got her on her belly...

Krzysztof K

If she wasn't needed, she wouldn't be so lucky.

A Mills

Thank goodness my precious Rask’s beautiful face is spared lol, well, no idea where this goes next but I’ve got my popcorn and blue raspberry slushee and buncha crunch and hot dog and sour patch kids on deck.

dobbs

I don’t think it’s luck. Looking through the last couple pages, it looks like Oren is right-handed, which is the arm Swift bit. It wouldn’t be surprising that he would miss an offhand throw. But in general I get the impression almost nobody in the Hollow has experience wielding weapons in combat, relying on the Hollow being naturally inaccessible.

Krzysztof K

Well, plot-wise, she's lucky. Oren has a wounded right hand, so he throws his left and misses. She falls into a hole, but the wooden stakes only graze her. Rask decides not to kill her. Scree saves her from the wolves of Zenith. Hemlock saves her pups. I'm not concerned with what Swift knows or doesn't; as a reader of this comic, I perceive her as if she had some kind of protective spell. It's a shame Sybil isn't so lucky.

Dinah

Hoping Sybil's okay in the end, it looked like a bad bite but not fatal if they quickly treat it. Which makes me wonder how hard it'll be to treat her with all her quills.

Gale Tazzin

oooh that's a good point. Swift is used to fending for herself. we've only seen someone defend her once, and it was Scree, who mostly felt bad for betraying her earlier, and Swift sent her away.

JeffMakesGames

Swift in the last panel sees the sheer number of prey charging in with more spears and will likely flee back into the woods. She realized that Rask was not lying about them defending their home and will find herself outnumbered. Also probably surprised the prey SAVED this Marten from her, although how she failed to bite him within this range or whether she was even trying to bite him isn't too clear to me. I don't think Sybil is dead, just wounded. Pretty sure Teagan wants character deaths to have some kind of satisfying meaning and her death right now would just be a negative towards Rask and the prey sure as hell wouldn't allow him to stay if he got someone killed. At least Rask picked up a spear and tried to get Swift, at least showing the others that he some secret ally to her in any way. Sybil's death would also kill any chance of Swift and her family from being able to seek safety at the Hollow. Now for Swift, this puts her and her family in a rough spot. They are still in the woods. The Zenith no doubt has entered the woods this sun rise. How far into the woods they are until they encounter Seral's body, or Swift's family, or even the Hollow isn't clear. If Sybil is dead, peace talks between the Hollow and Swift would become impossible, especially if she brings her family to seek safety from the Zenith. With Sybil being alive but wounded, the possibility of peace and/or forgiveness might be possible and some kind of alliance against the Zenith could still happen. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out. Hemlock, where are you? I find it hard to believe that she would simply outright abandon two wolf pups, or ignore that there is a family of wolves, THIS CLOSE to the Hollow. She has to be keeping an eye on them I would think.

Marcwolf

Oh Sybil... I hope she is ok... Swift is starting to look less composed in her bravado.

Marcwolf

Fortunately it was not Red otherwise he might have lost something.

Briana Burch

I think the surprise is for the spear between her front legs. But she certainly wasn't ready for prey to stand and fight like a pack. Let alone fight for a marten.

Briana Burch

I think she's startled by the spear suddenly between her front legs.

Morpheus

Ya probably Also... Phrasing!

JeffMakesGames

I have a random thought. How do Swift's pups feel about prey at the moment? A flying rabbit that saved them from their Uncle. A Marten gave them fish. Perhaps these two small minds could be changed to not see prey as food... but as friends and or allies in some way?

Briana Burch

It's not luck, she bit the main arm because she saw it holding the spear. The pit and Hemlock saving the pups were indeed lucky, but gettng her family away was pure determination.

Briana Burch

It also seems to be his non dominant hand and that his dominant one is injured.
