Noooooooooooooooooooooooo ):

KiraKurotsuchi

Damn. Really hoped she survived that. Dum dum essentially burned her one and only bridge for the survival of her , her mate, and their pups.

Rizer Stake

Rask must be feeling guilty as shit

Busterdrag

Looked like such a "superficial" bite, like not to the neck or such from what I can see...but I guess she hit an artery or something.

SJ

Worried for Rask now too ):

Dhaka Yeena

Time for a heart to heart with Oren and Rask

JeffMakesGames

With the passing of Sibyl, I am trying to think how this story will continue. I can't see Oren letting Rask even stay, so a main character gets exiled. Not sure how his story will continue to play out. Swift's family is surely doomed to be discovered by the Zenith and killed. I can't see Oren let alone the Hollow even helping them.

Sarah

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

North

Man. Rask, buddy, your life lessons really come with too high a price tag.

luugburz

what sort of animal is the rodent (?) to the right of the brown rabbit? a marmot?

Dinah

Weird how I can’t fully hate Swift. Rather I’m just shaking my head at her ignorance and stupidity. She got the meeting with Oren, perhaps even a chance to make her terms. And in the end, she got absolutely nothing out of it. I’d like to think she’s learned something from this, but there’s no way of knowing right now.

Microgrampup

*Turns to Gristle* “Before, it didn’t count when she was trying to get the pack to run away from the Zenith, but NOW, she really is putting her pride over the pack”.

Star Drake

doesn't look good now with rask's only ally with some say dead. first sprig, now sibyl, i don't think the others will keep him around, when everyone who befriends him ends up dying and I wonder how rask will deal mentally, since he was already so depressed after sprig

Pantera

Poor Sybil. Hard blow for Oren, so many thoughts must go through his head right now. A leader who couldn’t protect everyone. And Sybil died saving him. Rask will also feel so guilty about this. Painful realisation that not everyone can be reasoned with.

Marcwolf

Sadly Sybil was the one who travelled and invited non prey into the Hollow.. She had wonderful intentions. But not every pred is cut out for that transition

Now, to be FAIR, it could just be me not fully getting a read bodily on where exactly Sibyl got bitten—and certainly if I were a porcupine I’d totally understand pals given a hard time accurately tracking my ‘unlikely to make it but damn we still gotta try!’ status w/ the Quills’n all but…. 😂 damn I’d be pissed if i found out later it was just the once-over stance glance before everyone got dismissed home with my body still in one piece!! G-GUYS 💦💦 CMON CHECK A LITTLE HARDER AT LEAST,, you’ll never find a survivor with that attitude! 💦💦 🤣🤣 /J

Some Other Min ⌐■-■

I’m honestly just more so surprised on why she’s had the gall to be so shocked by other wolves having little to no empathy for her partner or cubs’ lives versus keeping themselves fed if she has an honest mindset like this one so naturally, haha! Like, wow, so why with all the moral offense earlier, again? 😅

SJ

I’m wondering if this somehow pushes Rask and Hemlock to work together. Whether he’s kicked out or leaves of his own volition, I could see him begging to assist her as some sort of penance if it means protecting everyone. Which might mean trouble for Swift and her family…

Dinah

Listen, I may be in denial, but wounds sometimes look a lot worse than they actually are, and she's unlikely to have bled out completely in such a short timespan.

Dinah

Thanks to this comic, I went down the rabbit hole of wildlife veterinary medicine to see if you can shave a North American porcupine for surgery like you do a cat or a dog. (Turns out you can!)

Microgrampup

Sibyl had some proof that the non-prey she invited were capable of living peacefully with the residents of the Hollow, especially if they were to manage to travel all the way to the Hollow while keeping the spark. It’s just like she and Sprig said, Sibyl figured it’d be difficult for brutes only interested in killing or rutting to pull off what Rask did and Sprig said that there were easier ways to get a meal. What Rask did with Swift is very different, he had never met and talked with Swift and provided no trial that would naturally select for predators that are willing to change. Finding the Hollow was probably one of if not the most easiest search for prey Swift had ever done in her life. Easy for brutes only wanting to kill, probably no easier way to get a meal in this world than the instructions Rask gave to Swift (at least that’s what she thought up until this encounter).

Tori Sol

I'm kinda there with you. This whole scene has been frustrating me in all the wrong ways. Between this and the earlier scene where Red helped Swift pin Rask down, I just want Swift gone from the story. I can't even feel much over Sibyl right now. My brain's just going "Really???"

Rheanna

I think it’s important to remember, coming out of this scene of Swift meeting the inhabitants of the Hollow, that she is still a wolf. Obviously we’ve seen that wolves can be empathetic and I’m not pointing out her species with intent to say she can’t change, but she *is* a wolf and she *does* have two pups and a mate to feed, while being fresh off a massive betrayal from family and still under threat from a very powerful force. Rask, by comparison, did not have any of these factors. He was also in the unique situation where he was both predator and prey himself and could empathize more with the prey animals. Swift has never been anything other than an apex predator. Her only true persistent , danger is her own kind and injuries from her prey. By wanting to “meet” Oren, she has not only assessed the potential threat of animals with teeth, but has also had a chance at a very significant food source for herself and her family. I’m sure she’s capable of change and coming around to the idea of prey animals being more than simply a food source, but right now she has zero reason to think that. I don’t think she’s out of line or out of character for behaving opportunistically, although it’s obviously proved not to be a risk worth taking since she’s now sustained injuries and has nothing to show for it beyond gathering information.

Grey

What a shame, that’s both original hollow members who championed for him: Sprig and Sibyl, both inadvertently killed for being near him.

treefiddy

See thats the thing. I don't think stubborn maxxed Swift is necessarily unrealistic. She proved multiple times in volume 2 that when she gets something stuck in her head, there is absolutely no convincing her otherwise. She'll happily run into certain death with absolutely zero regard for her own safety as long as it matches her hard set world view (and more and more, it seems she'd much rather run into death even if it were readily apparent that it was completely unnecessary). As she has done multiple times in this story. In the penultimate scene of volume 2, she was legitimately spooked by the fire wielding mouse and hare and was seriously confused by the "rabid marten" who wasnt actually rabid, just 'strange'. She saw Seral, a fully grown wolf in his prime, killed with an unnatural wound that didn't match any animal bites. Then in volume 3, even before anyone had said anything to her, she comes in super aggro and ready to throw hands with the very people she was going to for safety. Granted, Rask didn't help with his opening remarks, but still she was aggro before that. The problem I have is that we know she is also a curious wolf, and not just a stubborn one. Take the beginning of volume 2, she is curious why there's smoke coming from the forest when very few others are. End of volume 2, she's curious about the rabid marten. Even in volume 3 she's curious why a badger and a marten are denning with prey, but she never asks why. Even when shes told why, she completely ignores it and runs face first into what should have been certain death, and only survives because she is supremely lucky. Honestly, if you had told me that Swift on page 312 and 313 was actually planning on hunting the people she was talking about on 312, I would have called you insane because that is absolutely not the vibe that was given off in those pages. And yet, that is apparently exactly what she was planning. So here we are. With 2 versions of Swift that contradict eachother. Both are honestly realistic, but neither make sense together.

Krzysztof K

You're right. As readers, we have too much time to analyze what's happening in this comic, and it's not like I have too much free time or anything. I simply analyze everything—movies, TV shows, etc. This comic is slowly starting to frustrate me, too, and what frustrates me most is what I wrote in the comments earlier: Swift's extraordinary luck. She seems practically immortal when, for the sake of the plot, another character can do something completely contrary to their innate nature and perhaps get killed off the first time. That's not the only thing that frustrates me; other things frustrate me too. I don't know, the cultural works we choose should delight us, not frustrate us.

Screw the Shadow Walker

I agree with all three of your comments. The last 10 pages or so feel like a dream instead of the story itself. It's as if we are looking at a nightmare that's torturing Rask's imagination. Very little of what has happened feels like the characters from volume 1 and 2. Rask is indeed standing there like a deer in headlights, Swift is making irrational decisions and plot armor is pulling her through, Sybil died for nothing, Red did not try to reason with Swift instead he pushed her to endanger everyone. It just feels forced for the sake of progress and I think my frustration has reached it's limits.

Gale Tazzin

After Sprig died, Sibyl was the only character left who represented hope for Rask. she wanted him to stay, believed he could become something better. and she was the one who invited Quanaq in the first place. now that she's gone, it feels symbolic that Rask gets squeezed out here because whether he's gentle or vicious, it's never enough to satisfy the Hollow. or maybe it means Rask has to stay, because HE'S the only one left who dreams of more than safety, and Oren knows how badly the Hollow needs someone like that.

Sarah

Cognitive dissonance!

Ugh man, I admire how this comic emulates nature and doesn’t pull any punches but this reminds me of why I sometimes write lil fanfics that I never share where really nice things happen to Rask, haha. I don’t want him to loose his hope for a better world, but the events of this comic seem hellbent on making that happen. Maybe people will get their wish and he goes off, runs into hemlock and they have some unexpected tryst, idk at this point. But I really do love Rask, as a character, I admire their steadfastness to non aggression, maybe I relate. I just hope things take a turn.

Krzysztof K

What do you mean your frustration has reached its limit?

Krzysztof K

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who writes fanfics. P.S. I probably won't share this with anyone either.

AbigailBozarthArt

Frickin brutal. At this point I’m guessing Swift and co, or at least Swift and Red, will also die. Maybe Rask ends up with their pups. I don’t think Oren will let him stay. Alternatively, maybe Rask goes off to hunt Swift.

Sarah

I appreciate the frustrations but I think you guys are being a bit unfair. Swift and Red are WOLVES. They have previously survived by eating everyone else and risking their lives to do so for each other. It would be illogical in their minds to suddenly listen to dinner just because the rabbits and mice got sharp sticks. Food is food. A wolf has no alternative. If Swift allied with the hollow what would she and her family eat? She’s no fisher. It makes sense that everything she does is just a trick to get her prey to make itself vulnerable enough to be eaten. Oren has grown to trust Rask and feels confident with it being a 4 v 1 where one of those is a predator and the other a porcupine. He likely thought Rask was going to pull his weight and defend. He has clearly still been stuck in that mentality for a while where he views Rask as a tool with teeth. Sibyl wasn’t defending herself, she was defending Oren. You don’t turn your back on the threat you’re trying to distract and keep an eye on. Her death is also narratively important. Rask can’t just win everyone over with empathy. Wolves eat people and you can’t sing them nice songs and hope for peace. With Sprig he learned the horror of the people he used to view as prey being killed as food by his own family. With Sibyl he learns that he also can’t just be a pure pacifist who tries to hug everything out.

Krzysztof K

I know she's a wolf that needs to eat. The point is, she's extremely lucky throughout the comic. Are you sure Oren has gained trust in Rask, man? Rask clearly stated this on pages 286, 287, and 315. If, after what he said, Oren still thinks he'll be a weapon, I don't know. FINALLY, TURNING YOUR BACK TO A THREAT IS EXACTLY WHAT PORCUBIANS DO. I see that people who read the comics also have trouble remembering what happened in the plot.

Brighttail Faux Pas

I think Swift came to the meeting curious to see what Rask has claimed. When she got there, she saw a handful of animals, nothing like the big community he was talking about. She got cocky and decided to teach this prey a lesson for wasting her time or lying to her. I think she wanted to prove to Rask that his friends could not protect themselves from one wolf, let alone anyone else. So she attacked, got hurt and went into a frenzy, apparently killing Sybil. Then reinforcements arrived and she realized that maybe Rask was right and she was very wrong. She fled as she was completely outnumbered. Whether she learns from this or not, we'll see. The real question is what will Oren do? Exile Rask? Will he ever trust Swit again even if she comes back humbled and willing to really talk?

Since posts are turned off on the next page, I am just going to cheat and write something here. As I have said in the past, I really love this comic to bits. The story is exceptionally well written and paced, the art is incredible and the consistency of your posting schedule has become one of the only certainties left in this timeline (seriously, I do not understand how you do it and I am secretly very jealous of your work ethic). I can also appreciate how you can set your boundaries by taking a week off now and then or by turning off the comments like youd did on the next post. Once again, this is not easy and I wish I could be as good at it as you are. Just keep telling the story the way you want to, I am here for it and so are most of the other people here (even though there might be some complaints or critiques now and then). Thank you for giving me something to look forward to every week and for being an inspirational person I can look up to!

Dalamin Aubis

A parent has to be many things. She agreed to meet, then saw it with her own eyes. A group of prey animals all staying in the same place. Enough food for her mate and cubs to survive comfortably while she plans her next move. Because that's what it all comes down to with the wolves. Food. There are many ways for death to find you, but starving is something you can't hide or run from. Rask knows what it is like to be hunted, to be a hairs width away from being eaten. Swift doesn't.

Noods

The comic can be so hard to read, in a good way, but it's difficult to stay invested in the main characters (Both Swift & Rask) when there are both so frustrating. Ugh... this is rough.
