Interesting pod , Wimbledon were not in the league long before they made the top division they were really just a jumped up non league team. The clubs you mentioned like Luton and QPR were much bigger clubs. They hold the record for lowest attendance in the top league of about 3,000 their average average was 7-9,000. My point being because they were so insignificant in the football landscape the authorities didn’t care, bigger clubs have gone out of the league than them , Bury for example recently. While it must have been very difficult for their fans at the time they now average similar in the lower leagues and still have a club to support. MK dons have a really cracking stadium but no fans which is a shame. All in all a sorry episode for football although having been to Plough lane there was no way they could have stayed it was a non league ground worst in London by a mile even Barnet was better. So what the outcome could have been if the authorities ‘ helped’ is anyone’s guess. The resurrected club should be given every praise for what they have done , my feeling is it would have happened anyway , they would have moved or gone bust.

A few of us at work twice a season choose a team to go and watch out with our clubs! Live down in England and about an hour from MK We decided to support this new setup and get tickets! They first played at the hockey stadium before stadium MK! It was that much of a nothing game I can’t even remember who they were playing. Rang the ticket office asking for 5 tickets, due to us not having an MK postcode they refused us!! I explained how we like to come and see clubs for a day out but basically said they didn’t want non fans inside the stadium! Since then it’s a standing joke at work every time they get beat! 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ ps Pete Winkleman is deffo for the watching! 😎

That’s a great idea. Went to see an English game once before. Man City vs Aston Villa when Hutton used to play for them

If Wimbledon fans backed the MK Dons project, I honestly think it could be a force to be reckoned with

Gregg

No chance mate - Wimbledon hardly had any fans as it was.

Interesting to hear, reminded me of the demise of Clydebank FC in the late 90s/00s. Not sure of there'd be much interest or info put there but that would make a good pod as well

The closest parallel in the NFL would be the Cleveland Browns’ fabled midnight flit to Baltimore in the mid 90s to become the Ravens. The league then gave Cleveland an expansion team, along with “ownership of the history” of the original Browns. More recently, the new owner of MLS’ Columbus Crew tried to move them to Austin, only for fans to pressure city and state politicians to threaten legal action. In the end, the shyster got an expansion team in Austin and the Crew got another new owner (the Browns owner in fact) and a new stadium. So, rather rarely for US sports, the fans won the fight to keep their team.
