On Raskin: he's only been here for 15 months or so and in that time has spent a chunk out injured. Most of his football has been played under Beale. He came highly rated and we probably need to give him more of a chance. I do accept that he hasn't earned it so far and the manager sees him in training, but Ridvan turned round a similar position and I'm hoping he does too. It's either get what we've been getting out of the midfield or try and get more from someone else. At the moment my mood is low so I'd prefer to try Sterling, Raskin and Diomande in there.

Excellent show boys. On the topic of youth football, what chance do these young players have when the manager keeps putting a right-back at left-back, or shunting him into midfield, rather than giving a youngster a go in his natural position? I find it hard to believe they couldn't fill in for a few games, not the whole season, just when needed. Some might say, "Are they good enough?" Surely they'd be good enough for a few games. After all, they wouldn't be at Rangers if they didn't have talent.

Andrew Finlayson

Dessers at 19 non penalty goals now, pretty decent it has to be said and it’s not to dissimilar to what Boyd was producing in terms of non penalty goals back in his heyday for us.

Heart and Hand

He plays where strikers should play but increasingly seem reluctant to. Get in where you get your goals! Haaland does it better than anybody.

Billy Forrester

Dessers has had a good first season for us and although he gets slated by half our support I think he has contributed a lot more than the vast majority. I despair at the treatment some of our players get from our support, what the feck must they think when they see some of the comments about them, loyalty comes both ways and some of our fans need to see that, constructive criticism I get but a lot just want to hate players and run them out of Glasgow. A fickle bunch are a lot of our support

C. J

Tav has scored 15 penalties and missed 4. If Dessers had been on spot kicks and had the same success rate, he’d be sitting on 35 goals this season.

Andrew Finlayson

Yep it feels like near every game he’s getting himself real quality chances + another quality he has is his durability, the rest of our strikers are made of glass, he’s been the only front 3 player we’ve had all season who’s been available pretty much all season, I can’t remember him picking up any wee niggles or anything this season.

Graham Jones

The only way to play at this time of the season in a title race is one game at a time. It’s boring but it’s true. You have to isolate them down or you lose focus. Any other game apart from Kilmarnock means nothing until we’ve collected the three points. Dessers isn’t going anywhere, because he’s kept us going recently. Still, it’s two wins in a row, and we need to go and get another three this Sunday. The academy system is broken in this country, and other clubs across Europe are being pilfered as well. There will be a reckoning over it, because football will become unsustainable if it’s allowed to continue. But I find it hard to see UEFA act as they’re afraid of the big five. Imagine if clubs from the smaller nations simply ’stopped running academies and soccer camps? The game would collapse, so there has to be better management of the situation. I get it, small fish is eaten by bigger fish, who is eaten in turn by another bigger fish, but there needs to be limits put on the number of non-national youth players they can have on the books at any given time, and the loan system should be controlled so they don’t just loan them out to bypass the system. If there is no action from the club over this then the game could collapse. Growing your own players is the lifeblood of the game, and it’s been exploited for monetisation. It is literally part of Chelsea’s business plan, and has been for several years. So Rangers have to be working with like-minded clubs and associations to put in place some reforms.

Rose Mcloughlin

I ,like most of our fans say we need to give a player a chance to settle in but once My bum is in my seat I am groaning if we are not winning but I think we are just so desperate to have a good playing team that we would enjoy watching...I remember if Dessers name was called we all sighed but later in interviews he was so nice then I felt ashamed...so hopefully this summer we do give them a chance and I will try...as for England stealing our good young players maybe we should have a rule if we train them at the academys , once they are really good we should get the use of them for at least 1 year then they can go down south...or we build a trump sized wall at our border.

Barry Kerr

Scrapping the academy isn't an option for us it's a major requirement for the license to play European football which the club needs the finance from. Until Scotland has a cultural change on youth football nothing is going to change. What's in place after the U18 league when kids who might not be ready just yet? Loan move or nothing it's ridiculous. If you take PSV team of this season or Ajax last season 2 or 3 years competitive football at a young age whilst clubs in Scotland squabble over B teams it's pathetic. Rangers have had talented kids Josh McPake, Kai Kennedy and Lowry but all 3 of them don't have the attitude to match the talent only so much a coach can do players need to want to get there as well. It's easier for Motherwell or Kilmarnock to bleed a Lennon Miller or Watson because they don't have the same demands as us so there's less pressure on them and more of a developing environment for them with the clubs they're at right now. McCowan is 27 this year but take the point in general about getting players and loaning them out but we may already have better players at the club like a Bailey Rice for example just never know unless they're given chances. Rangers need to get more scouts in or make more contacts for watching young kids they had to be contacted to come watch a kid that we have at our boys club instead of being there where there's kids/youth games on constantly. Now they have record of our kid they're now trying to punt him to another boys club where the focus is just get them to pro youth level.

Heart and Hand

Should we try mandatory loans at a certain age? Offer them to clubs for basically free if they play a lot?

Thomas Blair

I never understand the over analysis of goals we concede. Every team in the world loses the ball in midfield and not every cross can be stopped. It’s football, goals happen.

KMS

Had we kept up the pressure that lot across the city.. Their arses would have collapsed under the pressure, as things are, we let them off. I don't think we have the belief, I look at Celtic and all I see are weaknesses and other teams exposing them, then we play them and play to THEIR STRENGTHS, for example crosses from the left wing to their back post and chaos ensues, there are examples all over this season, and what do we do???... Nothing. However that's all immaterial when we can't even put the others to bed without absolutely struggling

Mark Ronaldson

Does anyone know what is happening with Lovelace? He looked like he had talent.

Barry Kerr

Could do yeah but then comes down to what level they can go to. If you look at Cole Mckinnon went to Thistle played a good amount of football under McCall he leaves new manager comes in he barely plays. SFA need to look at restructuring the game in Scotland look at the farce of the playoff situation with Buckie as an example. Restructure the leagues and allow B teams into them with a certain cut off point say the Championship. The level won't be great but it allows players to continue their development by playing competitive football every week and playing for 3 points.

Gavin Sullivan

They should bring back the reserve league. Youth players need the opportunity to play against experienced pros to further their development after u18s. I also believe their should be a minimum requirement for 5 home grown players within a match day squad. It would force clubs to look more closely at their academies and give opportunities.

Graham Roy

Interesting thoughts on the B team I do agree with others about the Reserve league and possibly expand it to 16 teams. But an actual grown up conversation is required in Scotland and some radical changes required! What about a draft system for youth players coming from school? Financial rewards at the end of the season for playing X amount of under 20 players? Trying to start a debate around Europe about youth being stolen by England. Surely there is enough support to at least get UEFA to discuss it and start a debate?

Gary Brown

Great points we'll said. Just imagine he'd had love & encouragement at the start of the season to make him settle quicker! The David's said he's overcome criticism, sorry lads that's gilding the lily, he overcame utter dog's abuse from far, far too many. FFS had more concentrated abuse, more often, than any CFC player on the Ibrox turf since we came back to the top flight. The fanbase literally broke Lammers and look at him now. He definately showed flashes of his talent and it was pretty obvious he was trying too hard in order to impress fans, make up for poor performance (by the entire team at that point remember!) snatching at chances and leathering strikes. Bit of composure and it's a totally different outcome. Been sent on loan for his own mental health. The "haha, that's just us, we're a demanding support.." is utter bullshit. Every wrongdoer, criminal & deviant can, and do, justify their own bad behaviour to themselves & others with lame excuses. We're incredibly lucky Dessers has the fortitude and strength of character he has or we'd have been right in the shit with no fit striker at all. Doesn't routinely get stupid, unnecessary bookings and miss numerous games being suspended either!

Gary Brown

Really great points Barry. Interesting too. At least they came for a look at your club's lad and are trying to progress things. Is an age old problem, look at Kenny Dalglish, literally right under our noses.

Gary Brown

Thanks for the flagship lads. Doesn't have to be pretty. Loss at County, draw at Dundee, win at St Mirren is upward progression in league form. Killie at home, full Ibrox, full backing. Go again.

John Palmer

I thought Balogun was tremendous v St Mirren. His desire through the full duration of the match was evident and his 2 Outstanding tackles which in all honesty, Goldson or Souttar would never have made.

Barry Kerr

Yeah it's a young age and he plays a level up a real talented kid for his age. I know from another podcast David Templeton is a scout for Hearts youth and he said every weekend he sits at Ravenscraig for the full 4 hours constantly scouting kids. Rangers might do that but on that occasion with our kid the scout had to be told to come along. Clubs way seems to be picking up kids through the soccer academy sessions they run which is fine if that's their approach but there's so much kids football on that they can be out doing what Templeton does for Hearts.

Scott Christian

I don’t quite understand what happened at pre-season. There was the video of John Lundstram smashing the numbers in the yo-yo test and yet here we are with him looking leggy and lethargic. So was it too much or not enough?!!

Scott Christian

I think if you look across the general footballing world there really are only a handful of teenagers and very early 20s boys playing regular first team football at the top level. And these are the exceptionally talented ones. The reality is that the huge majority that break into first teams don’t stay there for too long. The fact that we can probably name all the ones that do remain involved at their first club tells its own story (IMO). Clubs have academy sides at every age level (and the bigger English clubs have an elite team and several feeder teams below at every age level). The expectation really should be that we can get one or two players into the first team squad by the time they’re 23 every few years. For me there should be an U23 league in Scotland. Playing adult football as a teenager is all well and good but looking at some of the scores when we were in it (and with Hearts and Celtic now) it really isn’t the challenge it’s meant to be & I fully understand why Rangers have gone with friendlies in the absence of anything competitive that’s beneficial. And to be absolutely fair, teams like Linfield, Glentoran, Cliftonville, etc al lose their players to the Old Firm too. It’s a pecking order and I think we have to accept where we sit in that. I do think something needs done with compensation though. Probably too difficult to pull together something contractual I guess due to them turning 16. I think if there was some kind of magic bullet someone would have found it by now.

Heart and Hand

Doubt managers would last long if they say 'ach well, it happens'. It's looking at what we could have done better.

Barry Kerr

The Lowland probably wasn't a great level in terms of teams they face but it will have had loads of benefits for the kids on how to look after their body before and after games. 35 or 36 league games I think when we were in the Lowland League, 6 Uefa Youth League games, Glasgow Cup, challenge Cup and for some u18s as well so plenty of football. I agree on the u23 league but finance dictates everything in Scotland its why the reserve league became the shambles it has.

Bob MacCallum

He get slated by 99% of our support. Quite rightly. He's a dud and if you're happy with him as our main striker, then your standards are remarkably low. Hopefully, the manager will buy a proper striker next season - otherwise our team is doomed (and so too will the manager be)

Scott Christian

There are definitely some benefits, mostly the physical side though. Maybe learning of some of the darker arts and how to cope with them too? It’s a completely different level but I am assistant coach to Workington AFC development (U20) squad, which we entered into an open aged league at the behest of the 1st team manager. We are now resigning from that league as there really hasn’t been much of a benefit & we have agreed as a club to go to U23 league alongside the teams at our level, which is technically (though not physically) much higher. As a club with limited resources we believe this is the way forward to develop local talent and give a pathway to the first team. I get it’s a totally different level to Rangers but I do believe there are parallels and that coming up against technically better players in a competitive setting is the best way to improve players and therefore their potential for breaking in to the first team.

Stigger

I think we need to bring King on. He was thrown under the bus in the CL as we didn’t have any other options but he’s young and decent. Better than Davies. He will mature with time

Billy Forrester

Your Dessers patter bores me now Bob. He maybe has his faults but by god he shows up and he tries, I wish the others who have let us down so badly at times could say the same. He is all we have got at moment and as long as he pulls on the shirt and gives his all I will support him, u may want to try that instead of constantly putting him down, it’s tiresome. I bet if he scores the winner at parkhead and in cup final u will be jumping around like zebedee on smack.

David Booth

Re : the conversation around the academy output - for me Ross McCausland is a perfect example of what our academy could/should provide on a greater scale. As a fanbase we seem to want/expect a constant stream of Nathan Patterson's. The reality is, as Davie says, that any elite youth products we bring through will move on (usually sooner rather than later). Of course we have to continue to strive for that standard of player and financially capitalise, but there is a lot of expenditure in our squad that aren't and never will be the required standard to be anything other than squad players. For me, the more Ross McCausland's we can develop - academy products that can be trusted to do a squad role and allow our spending to focus on regular starters - will be the barometer of the academy's success

Douglas Wright

I understand the hesitation with Raskin but I do think he would be better in midfield next to a better partner. With Diomande, Raskin and Sterling as a central 3 I think could be very good
