Get this out the way early 🤣🤣

KG

Clements success will be based on two things the recruitment and sale of players and his tactical system if he continues the direct hoofball stuff to the wingers it's a lost cause from the start

Alan Cowan

Old guard clear out is a must. Goldson Tavernier Barasic and Lundstram along with Roofe Matondo Jack Wright and others We as a club haven't yet got over Seville. Squad is to fat with high wage earners blocking the development of the young team The ambling back into defense is now costing us big time, emphasized by the 2nd goal. No effort to block the cross. Not yet convinced by Clement, could be unemployed by October if we don't win the cup and start next season, not just with wins but decent football , he knows the outcome

Gary Shaw

Not really been sold on Clement from the start….People can argue all day that it’s not his players but we should be seeing patterns of play, press and combinations of some sort but there’s nothing apart from they daft floating balls up the line from our fullbacks…..Even though it took Gerrard into his 3rd season to win the title,we could all see early doors what he was trying to implement, same goes for Ange in his first season with them,a blind guy could see it…Clement just doesn’t give me any hope

Richard

40 games in and zero style of play. I have no idea how we try to play apart from lumping the ball up the park.

Tamus

Nice n early

Colin gray

Haven't listened yet but want to comment on something else, on Saturday I watched while my laptop was 'on holiday' via RTV. The coverage was honking. At half time there was no analysis, are there no half time guests anymore? At one point the RTV coverage was very good

Mark Ronaldson

Looking at the stats and average positions, the three midfielders for Celtic this season do leave the defense isolated at times. We just struggle to take advantage of it with nothing up front. Callum McGregor often can be bypassed as he gets caught out of position. To be fair the midfield, for them, do have the legs to get back if you are slow in transition.

Ian Cartledge

I would love us to play some other systems….ever since Warburton we seemed to be stuck to playing 4-3-3.

Craig

Clement started well, we went on that run etc… and then these players fell back to their comfort area. Rather take stick from us than go on and fight for a win or even show some fight. The LB and RB also started as far back as Gerrard’s first season, fair enough Tav is the captain, why have these players fell away from what was going on when he arrived. Clememt is not without blame, but if he keeps this core they will get him sacked. How many managers will it take before the board think maybe some of these long term players are a problem! Clear out or he’s out!

Mark Ronaldson

A manager that plays with wingers in his style of play then loses all experienced wingers. That why he plays Sterling as a winger and not in midfield because he has pace.

Greg

Thank God this has dropped.

Alastair McGeoch

Unfortunately for the manager, the fans are done with the majority of this squad. If Clement is to be successful he needs to clear out Tav, Goldson, Lundstrum, Jack and the medical department! We are unfortunately a bang average team and have been for a couple of seasons now. A team full of players just happy to have “Played for Rangers” on their CV but not Rangers players. Clement and the board have a big job on their hands which in all honesty will take 2-3 transfer windows. Sigh…

Jim McCutcheon

Thanks guys good chat agree with the points made ,a clear out is badly needed, hopefully the funds will be made available for that too happen, let PC bring in his own choice players and see what he can achieve

Darren Todd

Despite all of the failings, somehow, at 12 o’clock on Saturday John Lundstram was still going to be remembered as the guy who scored the goal that got us to a European final. He’s completely changed his legacy with that performance. Awful.

Michael

Actually seen 2/3 minute compilation on twitter today of our cbs completely missing our midfield and punting long balls up the park all game. I hope this is down to a lack of trust in his midfielders because if thats the plan even when he has his own midfielders then its not a good look.

Andy Barnett

The problem at the club is far deeper than Tav, Goldson etc. they’ve been allowed to feel comfortable in second place. If we don’t win the cup final (which we won’t), Clement will be under immense pressure. We really have to decide what kind of club we want to be. If we want to be second best but punch above our weight in Europe and trade players, then stick with capable foreign managers. If we want to be number 1 in Scotland, we need the best Scottish Rangers-supporting manager who gets what’s required. Basically that second place is unacceptable. Sure, the football might not be pretty, but McInnes for example has more victories against Celtic than we do. The team will be setup properly and will have a backbone sorely missing for years. I’m ready for the guffaws and abuse - much rather take that than another year of the same shite. Rangers need Rangers men.

Gregg

Derek McInnes - no thanks. He’s had his chance and shat himself, he was in a nice comfortable position at Aberdeen. The standard of managers in Scotland is at an all time low in my opinion.

Gregg

He’s really not - in 5/10 years this will pass. It’ll be leipzig and dortmund. Think how pish konterman was for example

William Alston

Most of them know that they are working their notice, nodding and saying the right things and being professional but when it comes to the actual game subconsciously they are phoning it in. Totally going through the motions can't blame the manager for that. I hope the board are seeing this and making plans to ensure that we have the proper rebuild required

G Calder

PC highlighted the issue a while back we have WAY too many1st team players out of contfrtact at the same time .. He made a huge error trusting players that are already in their minds away from Rangers ..

William Hughes

Once again, for the umpteenth time we nearly lost a goal in the first minute. Our goal was the only time in the game we doubled up on their right back. Something we used to do regularly. We need some youth with energy and a will to win.

Stuart McWilliams

I'd rather Sterling was in the middle, but I think Clement has looked at the team and realised that he can't leave Tav without support in front of him. People will have their own views on his defensive abilities but he simply doesn't have the engine to be our attacking threat and a defender at the same time in these games. If we move Sterling into the middle we either lose Tav's ability to go forward or leave him exposed (Gio tried that and we were 3 down by half time). At this stage, through a combination of poor signings and injuries, it's really a case of picking which way we want to be exposed. If we pack the middle, we'll get beat out wide.

Ewan Christie

Genuinely just can’t be bothered with the vast majority any more. Get Raskin, Sterling and Diomande in the midfield from now until the end of the season and we might have a chance in the cup final.

Luke

The club will not progress with Tavernier, Goldson, Lundstram and Barisic in the team. This group of players were creating problems when Gerrard was here and we are still facing the same problems today. Our only style of play revolves around our right back, how can we progress when he remains in the team. Hopefully Clement is the manager that creates a new leadership group because there are a few players there that look like they want more than what’s being offered. Butland, Diomande and Sterling.

james whyte

The players we look to for 'leadership' are comfortable being second with an underdog mentality. Shown it in Europe, underdog, less pressure, they perform. Lge, when chasing can get back into it. Soon as go top, over many seasons now, arse collapses. In games v Celtic, dont start well, lose 2 goals then start showing fight and bottle. Weak as piss. All need removed

Gregg

Where are these Scottish managers Andy? As with the players all things being equal then go for the Scot - there are hardly any decent managers out there. That’s why your Hibs and Aberdeens aren’t even considering iManaging football teams has moved on - as with most things - and I think this is a comfort blanket thing. We just want Walter/ Souness back and a bag of cans

Miguel Sanchez

Surprised Martyn and Andy weren't broken out of the 'Break in case of Rangers nonsense'. Poor souls needed a rest lol

James Muir

PUT STERLING IN MIDFIELD AND MAKE HIM CAPTAIN GOING FORWARD IMPROVE HIS CONTRACT AND DESSERS TO TAKE THE PENALTIES

James Muir

TIME FOR CHANGES AT OUR CLUB FIRST STEP DONT SIGN ANY OUT OF CONTRACT PLAYERS THEN SEE WHO IS AVAILABLE IN THE SUMMER

Alan Weir

Usually love your H&H content, Andy, but in my opinion “Rangers need Rangers men” would be the final piece in the jigsaw turning us into a parochial wee club with no ambition beyond the borders of Glasgow. The historical facts are there if you want to look at them: most of our greatest teams have been made up of a diverse range of players, not just “Rangers men”. The contemporary facts are also there: Celtic aren’t beating us on a regular basis because they are full of “Celtic men”, far from it. We need people who can recruit properly, resulting in talented young players that we can ultimately trade to keep the whole club financially afloat.

Rona Bluebell

Nearly spat my tea out reading the suggestion we settle to be second. Never. I’ll personally go to Saudi and secure an overlord myself FFS. Never ever will I ever accept us being second. No.

Alan Weir

Good assessment, Stuart. However, it remains this season’s most baffling decision that we accidentally found that Sterling looked a real powerhouse in midfield and subsequently played him in the far more marginal positions of left-back and outside right . We cannot use such potentially influential players out of position to cover for the weaknesses of others.

Andy Barnett

We’re in a parochial wee league Alan. And 2 out of 3 of the last Celtic managers have been Celtic men. They’ve had a core group of Scottish players throughout their dominant spell. And if you look at our most successful dominant recent spells - the 90’s and late 00’s, it was true of our team and manager as well. Therefore the history reaffirms my point.

David McBurney

What a terrible attitude to have saying we won't win the cup final. Take it you won't be watching then?

Andy Barnett

Of course i'll watch it. Do you tune out of matches you expect us to lose? And what evidence do you have to suggest we'll win other than blind hope?

Andy Barnett

Hibs and Aberdeen finished in the bottom 6. Hearts & Kilmarnock on the other hand. I agree with what you say about craving Smith/Souness though. A 90's complex is what many of us have. I'm just as sick of the whole rinse-and-repeat nonsense as everyone else and feel it's worth exploring a different route. One that's trusted us well throughout my lifetime.

Steven Renton

Tavernier does good things blah blah blah. Look at him in the tunnel before every game against them. Shitting his drawers like a man walking the plank. Him, Barisic, Lundstrum, Goldson and others to a lesser degree have infected the club with a weak mindset that isn't going away until they're all gone.

Gregg

I get that Andy - I just doing think knowing the words should be a prerequisite on the CV. Look at the manager of the year list - we don’t have any inspiring or up and coming managers really. Even down south the Scottish influence is dwindling as the game is more global now. Note the hearts reference - I wouldn’t even suggest what I think you might be hinting at. Would be absolutely toxic

Stuart McWilliams

I agree, long term he has to be a midfielder. I think he would really complement Diomonde, and having him in the middle would also mean we don't ask our number 10 to do as much off the ball (which would bring out the best in Cantwell).

Gary Brown

Thanks for the pod guys. Always a horrible task to be picking through the debris and be objective, you did a good job. Need to stick with big Phil. What choices has he truly had for the biggest points of failure? He's put out the 'best' players available to make a team to do a job each game as it comes. And they aren't good enough. Recruitment, transfer & contract policy needs changed. Fitness and injury prevention, treatment & recovery policy needs changed. Players need changed! But even if we change the players unless the other parts; quality of player recruited, contract terms & duration, fitness, injuries, minds on contracts, etc are put right we will face the same problems season after season, the hounding out of managers year after year and the standard of incoming players and managers will drop.

Andy Barnett

Absolutely Gregg, Naismith can f**k off. I'm merely suggesting there are experienced and up-and-coming Scottish managers about who statistically do better than those who aren't. Whether we like them or want them is a different matter. I guess it comes down to us asking ourselves what kind of Rangers do we want to be? Second place in Scotland, with regular relative European success or first place in Scotland with occasional European runs?

Gregg

I think he’s a fullback who can do a good job in certain games - like Saturday - because of his physicality. I don’t see him playing midfield regularly. Was a really small sample size to go off. Just my opinion - I’m wrong fairly regularly

Angus Mackay

A good pod in the circumstances. I have never felt as betrayed by a Rangers player as I did by Lundstram on Saturday, he phoned it in until he embarrassed himself and then took the cowards way out. Under no circumstances should he wear the shirt again. Ultimately this Rangers team will be remembered as one that was able to put itself in a position to win, but not able to cross the line. The Europa final was the whole thing in microcosm. As the guys said, time to move on in the summer. Lundstram and Borna away, Goldson too if we can get money, if not he needs to be back up. I would keep Tav for a transitional year at least. But we have to back the manager as a support - even if the first part of next season is likely to be difficult as a new team is built and comes to terms with playing for Rangers. Good to hear Adam again. 👍

Steve Clark

We can’t keep sacking managers every time we don’t win the league for a number of reasons.one being it’s costing the club millions in paying off a manager and his coaching staff which then can’t be spent on players.my own thoughts on the manager he has to be given two or three transfer windows to totally revamp the squad.it will start this summer,I fully expect that the team that kicks off the new season will look nothing like the team we have now.

jamey Carruthers

See when a manager arrives at a club midseason and there are 3/4 guys on 30k plus a week who run the dressing room and he doesn’t want to give up on said season. What do you do? Bin these guys and the season potentially implodes? Keep them on side and try and salvage the season and look to change things in the summer? I think it’s far too simple to say just bin them all. As much as I agree he’s been blind on Lundstram. I do think he deserves pre season and a younger fresher squad to work with.

Steven Miller

Thanks for podcast gents. It's painful just now, but listening to your collective thoughts is bizarrely therapeutic....especially on a Monday morning 👍🏻 Can't say I'm looking forward to Ibrox tomorrow evening but I'll be there spending time with my son...onwards 🇬🇧

Ross

For their 2nd goal. see when i was playin football a was always taught get right on his touch , a fuckin 60 yard diagonal and he lets him pull it down then just run at him? the second he takes that touch he should just fly in and clean him n the ball out. Threat gone. Proper pathetic defending

SDF

This squad is done, we know that much and we all know this groups limitations but Adam is spot on. Are we really at the stage where supporters are willing to give Clement a free pass and argue that all he can do to set us up in the last few weeks is hoofball into the channels as a tactic ? That's the grand plan from a £1.5m a year manager ? That's a cop out. Clement isn't a jobber manager. We've saw how good and effective he can be, that's why his decision making in the last five weeks seems so bizarre to me. For five months he found solution after solution for every problem that came his way. But all of sudden we're making excuses for him because the squad is hated and we're almost automatically willing to apportion every single bit of blame their way ?

David McBurney

First of all I never expect Rangers to lose I might think it will be a tall order to beat teams at time but never expect to lose secondly we can definitely win this cup so long as Clement picks the right midfield. To flat out say we won't win the cup is downright defeatist and do we then forget our motto no surrender

Jamiedfa

Good pod great to hear Adam

Niall MacKay

I know you say he has stuck with Lundstram too long, however Lundstram has a way of doing enough to make the manager believe he is reliable. His short spell at the start of Clement's time, when he was excellent, will have coloured his views on JL'S capabilities. I hope that any pretence that he's capable of being a Rangers player going forward has now been kicked to touch. I also agree that it's the manager who keep playing this leadership team that are at fault, however the same logic as above applies. New manager comes in, the players do okay for a spell and then down tools. It can't ever be a blessing that we've failed again, but if there is a small grain of comfort to be had it'll be that Clement now has nothing to hide behind. These guys are serial losers. Quickest to 500 games? Our best scoring defender? All I see is three trophies in 9 years.

George Higgins

Twice Collum has not changed his decision after a var review. Once in our favour and once against. He wants to be centre of attention and show he was correct. That’s basically it.

littleboyblu

Sorry Andy with all due respect I can’t agree with you. It’s the players & injuries that have let Clement down. McInnes wouldn’t have gotten us as close in the title race from the position Beale left us in. Plus McInnes has no European experience. Clubs up and down the country & all over Europe appoint managers from outwith their borders and they do well. Postecoglou & Rodgers aren’t Scottish but can get a tune out of Celtic. Celtic consistently go into European competition and get right royalty pumped by European managers playing fast attacking football. You could see by PC’s start that’s how he wants to play. I’m not saying PC hasn’t made mistakes but he’s playing catch up with one of the worst squads in living memory. He needs backed over the next 3 windows (we’re not fixing this in one summer) and given time to ship out the old guard and the players he obviously doesn’t fancy.

Alan Weir

Andy, being in a “parochial wee league” does not mean we have to give up the fight and behave like some outfit from the Welsh League. It does sound like you want us to bow out of the big wide football world in the hope that a few “Bears with Boots” can magically turn things around. The talent in Scottish football just isn’t there and my worry with your suggestion is that we win the league with a bunch of bluenoses only to turn around and find the rest of the footballing world has disappeared over the horizon.

Alan Weir

I’ve done a wee check, Andy: could you clarify your claim that Celtic have had “a core of Scottish players”? In terms of regulars, surely there is only McGregor, Taylor (and they hardly fit the bill as born and bred “Celtic men”) and, at a push, Tierney. Celtic’s success has been due to a wide variety of scouting in France, Asia and England; I can’t really see this Scottish core you mention to back up your argument.

David Kelly

Very good pod, thanks guys. I totally agree that it is a cultural issue within the club, as Adam correctly mentions, the squad really has changed year on year and it’s not this myth of “the same players”. For me, it’s from the top down. The definition of success at the top (that “best in class” nonsense that John Bennett came out with) is different from what we expect as fans, and the recruitment of both managers and players has been very poor. I do have some alarm bells about our manager and the cup final is absolutely huge for him. Like Gio, PC went down the route of comparing team budgets in Europe (particularly against Benfica) which really annoys me. The difference between our budget and Benfica is a hellova lot closer than how our budget dwarfs Ross County, Dundee and Motherwell and these are teams he couldn’t beat. As much as the derby games are hugely important for any Rangers manager, not beating these budget teams in the league is what ultimately costs us again. This, along with the number of times he has had to change the team at halftime over the last few months after getting it so wrong originally, just has me concerned. Fingers crossed this all changes with an important cup final win and strong summer!

Billy McCormack

As David said, keep doing the same thing you'll get the same results, but hey we're not allowed to critique the players or team, it's this have faith, keep believing, get the battle fever going if not you're not a Rangers fan Bullshit, that's right the players beat a 10 man Kilmarnock, so we're world beaters again, yasssss! so don't have a go at the players back the team, screw that I've done enough backing of these arseholes we need drastic change or the pedos will have the mantle as the most successful team in the world.

Andrew Finlayson

There is only a few that have the right mentality for this club and one is big Dessers, that’s him got 20 non penalty goals this season for us, the same return Boyd had in 2 of his 4 season for non pen goals.

Charlie Nicolson

I don't think we'll get a buyer for Goldson given him being injured. Likewise I don't see anyone offering McLaughlin a better deal than he's on at the moment.

Granters

Lundstram for me sums up post-55 Rangers. Why was he signed? He’s not a bad player, he’s just totally the wrong type of player for the way we need to be playing. He’s a player more suited to a side fighting relegation, playing most of their games against sides who will dominate possession. He’s the kind of player to slow a game down and take the sting out of it. I’d love to hear whoever scouted him justify what exactly he was going to bring to the side. Or was he just signed because he was an EPL midfielder available on a Bosman and wanting wages within our range? He’s basically been a square peg in a round hole since Day 1. If he starts the final then we lose it. Nailed on.

Derek Robertson

Look at the injuries we've had , how anyone can blame the manager is beyond me.

Derek Robertson

Aye get rid of Tav and Goldson and everything will be rosey in the Garden.

Vanb bryceter

Agreed there os something very odd going on sonce the motherwell fiasco. The stle of play has been shocking there isnt one game you could say was enjoyable to watch. Clement has done a terrific job so far but he also has made like the team some monumental fcuk ups in his selections. Im behind him but he really needs to get a grip although he is hamstrung with the amount of injuries. At least thats forcing him to do something different. This squad is a busted flush roll on the summer.

Vanb bryceter

I think that comment was appopriate at the time Andy. Clement has tried to repair the collective psychology of the team and to a degree he was succeeding until Motherwell came along. I cant agree with your assesment on non Rangers foreign managers We had the little general and he romped it. I lnow weve been here recently but lets wait a little longer and see what Clement can do with a summer refurb.

Bob McMillan

Big Phil is not blameless but look at that squad... we all wantes Sterling in midfield but who plays wide right? McAusland isnt up to it and we would slaughter him for playing Wright again. People say play Raskin....why? Been mince all season. He doesnt have the squad to do it. That being said, now that league is gone and he finally admitted the squad will be refreshed, if heplays same team in cup final then its 100% on him.

Andy Barnett

Advocaat had one of biggest budgets in European football against a Celtic team that was a mess. Wonderful football for two seasons but the second they got their act together, he was beaten.

David Baillie

Spot on Ross. I’ve been saying for long enough Tav has cost us many times in big games not least the Europa final. His total inability to stop a cross coming into our box is infuriating. There is always the counter argument about his goals and assist tally. A valid argument as his contribution is astonishing. So why have 5 managers refused to play him in midfield and bring in a proper right back who CAN defend. In my opinion that can only be down to the players reluctance to play there? Strange.

Gary Brown

I usually agree with your points Andy. Living outside the goldfish bowl looking in does tend to give a more balanced perspective. I do agree we need more Scottish players. Souttar, McCausland are hardly nailed on Starting XI. But I am intrigued about your take on the manager. Ok, so lets just imagine Big Phil gets sacked or (more likely) chucks it at the end of the season because there is simply too much to do to fix things; too many players to change, transfer policy & contract handling to change, fitness regime to change, injury management (& prevention!) to change. No money worth talking about. A support that demand everything, due by yesterday. Job expectancy from recent history 12 months. So which Scottish, Rangers man, manager should the board call? Rhys McCabe, Ian Murray, Kevin Thomson are pretty much all I can find with that essential criteria on their CV. McInnes turned it down before and Naismith is a non starter it seems from the majority of supporters. Ok extend to just Rangers men. Potentially Steven Davis, in a few years time. The football world skipped forward while we were grubbing about in the lower leagues. It is principally driven by European competition. Our city rivals, got unrivalled access to its riches. We are still behind financially. Unless there's a Sugar Daddy, American actor or Petrol state looking for some sportswashing, where are we going to get money from other than Euro competition? Sky will pay less and less in due course because no one neutral wants to watch the product we as a country offer. Plenty of comparable countries have success at home and relative success in Europe, where they can exploit player trading by showcasing their talented prospects in the biggest exposure matches.

Derek Stevenson

Everyone is open to criticism for the past 6-7 weeks. Everyone. Can’t say anymore on Lundstram. The entire leadership group is broken. And at the pinnacle is Tav. Great signing, amazing returns and memories. However, at 1-0 and given all the previous Parkhead collapses, Maeda is on the stretch and either gets lucky or takes a good first touch. You are the Rangers captain, the main leader. You go out and do one of three things. Win the ball, or make it very tough for Maeda to get a good second touch or you foul him (even take the yellow). You do that to allow the team to breathe again and not to allow the feral to get even more noisy and animated. But no, Tav sits off. It is maybe an isolated incident but that is the main man, and that kind of decision making or shitting yourself transfers across the pitch. It’s not ok and those incidents need to be very minimal across 38 games. It’s happening most weeks. It’s the end for so many players now.

Gary Brown

Tav has been in too many incarnations of Rangers teams and beaten by that mhob, he's had a good share of poor personal performances (even if only for a spell in a match) and plenty individual errors which have been deciding factors in those defeats. Tav cetainly does do his captain's role, takes responsibility and tries to make a difference and plenty times he has done. Mind set is gained based on habit, analysed from experience of the same situations and crucially the outcome of those situations. Tav has lost more than he has won, taken some proper hidings but never dished any out (ok maybe one) cost as many (if not more) goals as he has scored. He can show and say as much belief outwardly as you want, portray a positive mindset. But he can't hide from himself, which is his actual mindset. But he knows vs them, on the balance of probability, based on his own experiences he's for a chasing, he'll most likely lose, he personally might get a chance for a pen or free kick. Based on his own personal experience and the outcomes his mindset vs them is it's too tall a task, it won't end well. I'm FAR from a 'FFS Tav' guy, quite the opposite. He is what he is, his ability level is what it is now and was what it was in earlier seasons. We need to thank him for all the good he has done, there's been a lot of it. But to progress we need to move him on.

Gary Brown

That's the spirit Rona 👏 We need to set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover your costs.

Jamie Derrick

If we start season with Tav as captain we are accepting failure. He’s been a great servant but time for a change now

Barry Kerr

Lundstram rightly deserves the criticism for the weekend but think some of the chat is slightly unfair on his time overall. David mentions players being ran into the ground Lundstram is one of them look at him Benfica away Easter Road after that etc. The guy has played over 150 games overall for the club in what will be 3 years as Stuart says maybe he has taken the huff cause he hasn't felt valued by the club. Injuries and as you say poor recruitment have played a part in the amount of games he's had to play for us. I wouldn't give him a new contract it's time for him to go but things like his goal tally he's a holding midfielder he's not expected to contribute far more required from Cantwell Lawrence etc

Callum Dinnen

The shambolic recruitment is best summed up by the dual facts that Goldson is done yet also still the best centre half at the club. He's been a good servant to the club, however since he signed we've signed (off the top of my head) 7 centre halves and only Helander was a clear upgrade on him ability wise (but sadly not fitness wise.)
