Thanks for the series, some educational pods on various topics. I look forward to your new stuff

McCall was definitely on the field. If you watch the footage on YouTube, he is involved in the play as you can see the fire spreading in the background

Ash, Trev, well done on a very interesting pod. I remember that day I was at Easter Road seeing the Bears lose 1-0 in a typical end of season game. You mention the opportunities missed to reduce the risks of such a tragedy. I’ve always felt that if what had happened at Ibrox in January 1971 happened at Wembley or the Bernabeu then the football world would have responded far more energetically in addressing safety issues. I remember Stuart McCall speaking emotionally about his terror about his father’s being in the stand that day. You noted the strange behavior of some fans that day - perhaps that was a case of the first stage of the grief cycle, that people were in denial about what was happening - the natural response was to assume a case of high jinks rather than face the idea that a tragedy was unfolding. Pure guesswork on my part, I know. You mentioned the unusual situation of presenting the trophy before the game. I can give another example - in April 1992 we were presented with the Scottish Premier Division trophy before kicking off against Hearts on a Tuesday evening at Ibrox. I look forward to the next series.

Enjoyed this. 1st time I’d heard anything about it was on a fire safety course too. Horrific footage. Was sad to hear how many warnings were missed.

I’m pretty sure BBC grandstand or whatever it was called broadcast this live, ie, they switched to the stadium to show what was going on. Either or it was on the news at full time, I remember being shocked watching it as a 13 year old. Terribly sad event.
