Derek Robertson

How many goals have we lost since Goldson was dropped/injured?

Scott

Agree David, the manager needs to stop going on about the past, it’s fixing forward that’s important. I don’t care how many points we have taken or moral victories etc. Crack on Phil and deliver trophies, that’s all that matters.

James McSween

Totally agree with your point on Clement and Potter. Hopefully our new players we sign are ready to play and make an impact straight away and not like previous signings over last few seasons that take an age to get up to speed

Brian Auld

Will never understand not valuing cup competitions. People talk about not having a winning mentality - so you’d rather win the league but give that lot both the 2 other trophies each year and you’d be more happy? Not for me. Silverware is key regardless of what competition it comes from.

Fraser86

Feel bad for King he only gets game time when we're desperate, it's not right

Graham Jones

All managers will look back on better periods during the season when we’re not winning. Even Walter did it sometimes so it’s just one of those things supporters need to turn deaf at. We weren’t good at the weekend, and while it’s a dead rubber you have to question those playing when there’s a place in the cup final at stake. It makes me ask if they’re ambitious in the game, and if not then they should leave. I think Jo Potter is trying to remain positive after losing the league on the last day, but the real problem was losing a game they just shouldn’t lose. We were good against Glasgow City and Celtic, but you can’t drop points against the other sides as things stand.

Jim McCutcheon

Spot on again David, let's see if this group of players can do the business on sat 🤔 will always support the team hopefully they perform one last time for a good few and lift the cup 🤞,

James McSween

8 goals with 1 clean sheet (6 games) he’s missed 8 goals with 2 cleans sheets (6 games) he last played

Heart and Hand

Yes, I’d rather win 5 leagues in a row than 10 cups. But the point is you start with the league as the non-negotiable THEN win the cups. A nice addition to the main event.

Jamie Gilchrist

The more I see young Lewis Mayo flourish at Killie, the more it seems we backed the wrong horse with Leon King.

james whyte

From the board down to the players the job description every year is win the Lge. If your a side thats winning Lgs, chances are your picking up Cups along the way. The whole Club needs a rocket.

Brian Auld

Well forgive me but that’s not a winning mentality if you’d take winning 5 trophies out of 15 but clearly that’s just a difference of opinion. I do get the point you are making about the league as we need to be winning it more often but to me it’s silverware each season that matters.

Graeme Duncan

Thanks David. Nailed it with the comments at the end of the pod. Second is nowhere in the league.

Craig Armstrong

Absolutely bang on David re Jo Potter's comments but I don't think it's solely her. I think everyone connected to the club has lost that "winning the League is first and foremost mentality".

Heart and Hand

I think if you’re winning the league regularly cups tend to come along because it means you’re tge best.

Sam Howie

It’s concerning that we are not being linked with any young Scottish players.

Tamus

Just start winning games you useless dicks

Alek K

Clement had a nice initial bounce, just as Beale did I agree 100% with David he needs to stop banging on about his first couple of months. What worries me right now is the structure, the players look like they don't know their roles and what is to be expected of them. Defensively it's just embarrassing to see us so disjointed. I wish Clement all the best but as much as I respect Alex Rae it concerns me that he is one of our main coaches, same with the assistant manager we brought in from India they don't have the credentials to be leading our coaching setup and I can't help but be concerned about things overall. We can bring in good players yes but they must be coached and managed correctly to get the best out of them.

Ewan White

Leon King has been seriously mis-managed by the club. For such a highly rated prospect that we fought off EPL teams to sign pro terms, why has he not been loaned out for the last 2 seasons? Lewis Mayo is being talked about but he's now had 3/4 seasons of 30+ games to develop.

Brian Rae

It's probably a point that's underestimated and perhaps dismissed but since we lost Jimmy Bell, there's been no one in the club to uphold and drive the standards that should be expected of any Rangers player or staff member. Our main figurehead set up a fucking homecoming friendly in Australia, for instance. There's a malaise and dare I say, a lack of identity within the club and I'm sure there are a few ex-players or possibly ex-manager (Eck) who could come in and reinforce the standards required at the club as a whole.

CAMPBELL DAVIDSON

The gradual acceptance of a cup winning year being indicative of a good season will see us in the dust. This is not a normal club and from our board on down - particularly since 55 - there has been a drip drip drip of acceptance and tempered ambition. If any of our current incumbents can’t deal with that, I’d suggest they should move on.

Graeme McLeod

And if we continue to appoint foreign managers and focus on signing players out with Scotland, that will only get worse. Successful Rangers teams need a backbone of men who know what the club is about. It didn't take long for things to fall apart under Advocaat once Barry Ferguson was the only Scot left - and that was a team of top class internationalists who had won things. We can't build a team solely from SPFL talent, but the penny has to drop at some point that teams full of foreigners with English lower league journeymen isn't going to work.

Graeme McLeod

Leon King's confidence was ruined by that Champions League campaign, and he should have been loaned out in the next transfer window. Alex Lowry was on the right path until an injury in a B team game, then once Beale came in the "he's got a bad attitude" stuff started circulating in the media. As his mother was dying. Beale was happy to offload Ross McCausland last summer too. His piss poor transfer record and the way he saw doing the bare minimum of what's expected at Rangers as success is rightly criticised, but for a supposed "youth development" expert he did a horrendous job at developing players. Players he should have known about from his time under Gerrard - and we had several promising youngsters derailed by bad loan moves under them too.

JimGLW

The manager has had a bad couple of months. His press conferences included in that.

Greg

Don't apologise David, potters comments were galling after they absolutely blew the league title. This type of thinking is clearly running through the training centre at the moment.

Graeme McLeod

The problem is there's nobody in or around the first team setup, other than Alex Rae, who understands that winning both cups but finishing second is seen as failure here. In other leagues that's a decent consolation to finishing second - not here. (2001/02 was an exception because of the momentum we built, plus Celtic never let us into a title challenge.) We're at real risk of completely losing our identity if we don't correct this soon. And there won't be an Eck or Walter who knows what Rangers is about to correct it. Once we become just another club full of foreign journeymen who don't understand the club, the identity is gone for good.

C. J

I said that we should have kept McGregor around in a similar role to Jimmy. I was laughed at.

Graeme McLeod

Lewis Mayo wouldn't have gotten a chance here either though. We don't give our youngsters a chance. McCausland only got it out of necessity - and even then it was after Lovelace got hurt. There's been plenty of knifes out for him on social media too.

Jamie Gourlay

That's shocking comments from Jo Potter. David you're right.... our club is full of people with a weak winning mentality. It's scary how far we seem to be slipping away. I don't know how we fix it. There is no Walter Smith. Souness is too old to get involved. We need to bring in some figures who will install that mentality. Jo Potter is saying that from the outside who knows nothing about our club and thinks 2 trophies is great. But Managers especially should know what is required. Very concerning.

David Campbell

Clement will be saying the exact same thing on Saturday If we win the cup

Craigieboy 1872

Hi David, do we know what time on Saturday the statue of Sir Walter will be unveiled.?

Paul

Spot on David. The bottom line is the manager came in when we were 2nd we finished 2nd. That's the facts. He has repeatedly mentioned this last 6 months. Does he not mention the last 3 of them when we have been awful

Damien Stubbs

I clocked that from potter as well David. Gets worse, it was on the club YouTube interview….. I wouldn’t have put that out

Graeme McLeod

Agree with you about the defence except for excusing Ben Davies - don't think he's looked good enough for Rangers either in the few games he's played, and it's telling he was behind Balogun until the injury crisis. He's been the best of a bad bunch of late, but that's a low bar.

Brian Rae

All of the big clubs still have ex-players/managers around the club. Bayern Munich always spring to mind as they put them in executive roles. I do think PC gets it though and I'm sure his standards are extremely high.

Bob MacCallum

Harsh on Potter. Maybe she meant that, given the players she inherited, that was the most she could expect. I'd expect the title next season - and so should Potter.

Russ

I'm not saying we should start the side that played v Hearts in the cup final but the age of that XI is what it needs to be going forward imo (25 to the nearest year). Maybe even a year younger. We were playing XI's that were knocking on for 30 for the average age this season - that's criminal especially when you're finishing second in a 2 team league. Clement has said we need young players as did Beale, I don't want them to be empty words again though.

Graeme McLeod

That we're going into a Scottish Cup final having to hope we have a centre back pairing of Balogun & Davies as our best option is enough to drive me back to the drink, to put it politely....

Graeme McLeod

You're bang on about Rangers having lost the mentality of people about winning league titles, but is it any surprise? Just look at the list of names you've mentioned we're looking to bring in. We keep signing foreign players and guys from the English lower leagues. There's no core of Scots/Rangers fans in the squad - there's nobody there drumming it into them what this club is about. Sure, some of these foreign targets may be more technically sound, but this league and this club are unique. We won't ever get back to what we were if this is the way forward. You need to build the core of the team, the guys you can rely on in the trenches, and then build around them. We seem to do team building in reverse of late.

Doug

We perhaps need to to adopt the Bryan Adams song "We're Gonna Win" as a new club anthem... "We're gonna win Don't wanna be a loser - gonna win Cuz' winning really is the only thing Get out of the way we're coming in If you want a fight just step inside the ring Does anybody wanna take a swing? It's gotta be all or nothing Ohhh we're gonna be the champions - yeah! We're going all the way - we're gonna win! win! We're gonna win, we wanna win Cuz number one is everything We're gonna win, we wanna win We're gonna be the champions" Maybe a bit on the nose though... and terribly American in sensibility, despite Mr Adams being Canadian himself lol

Rona Bluebell

Here is the bottom line with Rangers for Potter et al - you must win the league and you must beat Celtic. Anyone who thinks different will be out sooner than later. We are the most loyal and, often, the most ruthless support as our standards are quite rightly high.

Russ

Also just on the Left footed/Right footed balance, why did the manager play Diomande on the right of midfield? We had 0 width against Hearts with everyone narrowing in and heading for the penalty spot.

Doug

I wonder if somewhere in my deep subconscious I have a memory of that (my conscious memory is awful lol) hence why I thought of it!

Colin McL.

So many press conferences & interviews that need space filled - I’m sure Clement will be relieved when they are done for the season. As I will.

Leslie White

David a Led sign outside the training centre, Second Best Is Not Good Enough!

Jock Paterson

If the message is wrong, it’s being put out wrong from the top. Weak as piss but masters at bridge building. Scunnered. Again.

Stephen

Not too sure about this. It worked in the 90’s because we could afford to keep our best players and there were a lot of decent Scottish players to pick from. I can’t think of many we could realistically sign this summer who would be first team players. Celtic don’t have a lot of key players who grew up supporting Celtic but they still keep winning. Not sure it makes as much difference as it used to.

Colin Mathie

Loser talk from Potter, its whats been running through the club for years, i'd chase her for that alone.

Derek MacMillan

Can't say I'm that bothered by the hearts result. All about this weekend. Looking at the recent league tables - head2head against them is what counts and our recent record post Gerrard isn't good enough.

Iain Shaw

We do have characters like John Brown around the club, but he's probably not around the players like Jimmy Bell would have been. But this also really needs to come from players, not just wise old heads. We need a few Scottish players with big personalities who can be a barometer for others in the squad in terms of attitude. Guys who can make it clear to their teammates that dropping stupid points to the likes of Dundee and Ross County isn't a bad day at the office, it's an unacceptable disaster. Losing to Celtic isn't "disappointing, we learn from it" - it's "what do we do to make sure we don't allow this to happen again." I'm pretty sure this missing element is part of where the team has fallen short this season.

Graeme McLeod

Celtic's manager very much understands the Old Firm. He's not a boyhood Celtic fan, but his family background suggests he definitely understands their support. They've kept guys like Brave John Kennedy around for years because of that, as well as having squad players like Scales and Ralston around for that reason. In the first team they have Forrest and McGregor - not a boyhood fan, but very much one of them now. They have a core of guys who drum it into new players. And even a former bluenose like Greg Taylor has fully bought in. It definitely matters. You need a core of coaches and players who understand what the club is about and set the tone. I'm not saying it should be the three foreigner rule days again, but we are never overtaking them if we don't ever look at signings within Scotland. And there have been options in recent years. (Josh Doig should have been signed instead of Ridvan.)

Graeme McLeod

I see Europe the same way you do the cups, David. Even more so, really. I'd take a League Cup win every year over getting to the last 16 of the Europa League. I understand the financial aspect of why the club prefer the latter, but for me it's the league title, the cups and then any European run is a nice bonus.

KMc

It’s been needing said for a long time re the culture at the club. There’s definitely been a drop in standards and acceptance of 2nd best. Even with 55, you got the impression that it was the pinnacle for a lot of those involved. When really that should’ve been the start of a period of dominance. We’re now in a situation where Celtic are just as close to winning 56 as us.

Gordon Millar

I take your point, but it's well documented that a number of good young Scottish players, potentially within reach headed overseas to better things and are now out of reach......we should IMO always look to bring in the best local talent, if we feel they can take the step up.....but your right there are no guarantees.

Stephen

I understand the point but I don’t see who we can sign who falls into that category. Oli McBurnie? Bring in Del McInnes as manager? It’s more important they are good players rather than good rangers men. Celtic dont sign many players within Scotland either. We made a mistake missing out on guys like Doig and Lewis Ferguson but the chance for them is gone now. We need to sign player with a professional mindset. There will be loads of people at Ibrox that tell them what it means to play for rangers. They either don’t listen or are not good enough.

Fraser Black

Spot on big man. Just look at Goldsons comments a few backs back - what did he give as his most precious medal? The runners up one. Not the one that secured a league title & a 55th championship. But the one that incidentally, he didn’t cover himself in glory for in the particular final, & lost. Don’t give a fuck what competition it was in, that’s the mentality right there of your supposed second in command.

KennyY

I don’t understand why we would accept a low ball offer for Lammers or be happy with just our money back when he’s been performing like Pele in front of a Dutch audience in a better league than ours. Across the city they have Shitey Johnson doing similar in the English championship. Do you think they’re accepting a minimal offer or an offer under his value. Even if a deal has been done we could do a Tillman on then. We need to be squeezing every last penny out these summer sales.

Gregg

In the interview you’re talking about he also goes into great detail about coming back from a heart operation and he’s followed that with playing over 50 games a season for 5 year. That tells you a lot more about his mentality than if he’d said “I fucked my losers medal in the bin”.

Martin Davies

I sincerely hope that the bonus structure of the men's and women's teams are very heavily weighted towards winning the league and minimal towards the domestic cups. It's quite clear that we have a lack of drive and desire to win things at the club. Let's hope Clement brings in some genuine leaders into the drsssing room and training ground to change the whole culture across the club.

Fraser Black

I’d say the two are entirely different scenarios mate in all honesty. We all commend his attitude & commitment for putting himself through 50 odd games & being an ever present. Has he displayed the correct winning mentality when required? Debatable for me.

JimGLW

His parent club (us) don't want him back and he has failed club after club outside of Holland. We'll be doing well to get our money back tbh

Heart and Hand

I don’t have an issue with prizing his Europa League RU medal. I know guys from the 08 team who do too. But they also have multiple league medals.

Gregg

You need to be pretty mentally strong to come through what he has - just a counter balance to the criticism. Was a pretty insightful interview

Robbie McCarroll

Agree although he has ran out of things to say other than aye they were p*sh again. I liked his subtle reference to the Mclausland tackle and why didn’t they look at Dessers shirt pull.

Kenny Park

Probably been said but a lot of past tense in there from Butland? 😳

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update David 👍. The managers' comments re cups have to be taken for what they are. Cup success is success, albeit not the success we crave and believe we deserve. But what else can PC or Potter say? "Cup win, but that's shite!" I agree the cup holds far more kudos in the English mindset. But Belgium? I'd suggest not so much. But like every sports person any win is only something to be built on. Win a League, there'd be moaning it wasn't a double or treble. Win a treble then it's 'need to do it in Europe'. Winning 2 cups IS better than 1, or none - which we've become VERY familiar with. So can't turn the nose up at winning them. Better than nothing, take that. For now! As for might as well be 8th! David!! 🤣 Jeezo, let's not be putting that to the test FFS, even jokingly🤣. Next season with a pre-season and his own signings is what PC must be judged on. The man says he wants to win everything, every game. Win away at Betis to progress in Europa AND a League Cup - plenty giving it 'naw, don't care, save it, NEED the cup, its OUR cup'! The man gave us both. Now it's "Meh!" Been a lot of talk about player's winning mentality. Only get that by winning and cups is a start. Winning this league may have papered over far too many large cracks which we all know REALLY need repaired. What happened has truly showed a few starting XIs who are in a VERY procarious position. Can NOT keep blaming and sacking yet another manager. It will only make the situation worse, not better. Not gonna win a league without major changes in personel & style of play. You can't polish a turd but you CAN roll it in glitter!! #2, 4 & 6 weren't at it last season or start of this. They've become too powerful in the club (like Lampard & Terry did but obviously Happy Shopper versions!). THEY have the 'comfortable being 2nd' mentality, they influence the dressing room, big themselves up being 'better' in Europe, a bigger stage. Should've been them kopping the worst abuse instead of the guys just in the door from Aug - Oct. For me it's 'thanks for your service lads and farewell' but also 'but don't let the door hit your arse on the way out'. We must have faith PC will remove or at least neuter that powerbase. Without doing so 2nd is all we'll acheive. Good luck to Sam Lammers. After a couple of wilderness seasons in Italy needed somewhere to settle. Our fans didn't let him. Pity! Italy! A dream for many. Same for Laudrup but he hated it and needed to somewhere to settle too. Found a spiritual home here and we got his very best from him. Just saying! Be hopeful about the new signings. It's 2024, not 1994 and not Champ Manager. We'll get the best we can. I have far more faith in our recruitment than for some considerable time. Welcome the new ones, let them settle, back them, inspire them to succeed instead of terrifing them of failure. Everyone arriving KNOWS the expectations as soon as they walk in the front door. Anyone truly think Clement will be saying "2nd will be just fine lads" Anyone?

Bryan Watson

Agree and disagree with the Rangers exist purely to win the league comment. I agree that ultimately winning the league is the top objective every season and if you haven't won it then you have failed. However, if we take that its the only thing the club exists to do premise at face value then what on earth have we been doing since the turn of the century? I think the point you were trying to get at that I agree with is Rangers should always be about striving for more and never being satisfied. Doesn't matter if you've won fuck all or you're winning treble after treble, we can never be satisfied because there is always more to do, always more to be won.

Kev Roberts

Well put Win the fucking league Gers

Heart and Hand

"However, if we take that its the only thing the club exists to do premise at face value then what on earth have we been doing since the turn of the century?". Failing the basic test. I agree there is always more to be done but that is the start point, every season.

Gregg

💯- only one team can win. Got to be the objective obviously.

Bryan Watson

Realistically, how do we stop failing the basic test and how do we start passing it on a consistent basis? For context, I was born in 2000, Rangers have won 7 titles and lost 13 in my lifetime (excluding the top flight titles that Celtic won when we were in lower league) so I haven't lived the outright domestic domination we used to have. In total we have won 20 top flight trophies since the turn of the century. My dad always tells me the story of us beating them at Parkhead 3-0 to win the league thinking those days would last forever only to come crashing right back down over the following years. I think we can reach those heights again but it will take time. It is going to take the transfer window of all transfer windows for us to win the league next season. Hate to say it but think we have got ourselves in that much of a state post 55 that it will take a few windows to build a dominant team. If Clement fails to win the league next season but we show obvious signs of improvment and wins cups what do we do? Winning the league has to be the number 1 objective and you cannot be happy with yourself if you haven't won it but due to our own mismanagement we have got some way to go I think unfortunately

Gregg

We’ve always lost to Celtic - it will happen again, and they will lose to us. It’s always been that way. Saying we won’t allow this to happen again won’t make a blind bit of difference. I know it’s triggering for folk but come on

Christina Herriot

But he didn't say it was his most precious medal, he said it was probably the highest medal he would win in his career. Which it will be as I doubt he'll ever get to another European Final. You'll be getting a job alongside Michael Stewart soon making up stuff like that.

Craig Clements

I agree with David 100%. Championship wins are all that matters. St.Johnstone win cup doubles Whilst cup wins are a nice day oot. It's not enough.

Dave White

Tune. Haven't heard that for ages.

Derek Killin

Good Morning David I agree totally that Rangers Goal is to win the League every year. I will quote Bill Shankly the Liverpool Manager:- " If you are First You Are First If you are second you are nothing" Derek

Mark Boyd

Since king left there has been no leadership from the top that demanded winning

Brian McCracken

Winning the league is all that matters participation worthless if not winning
