As you said in an earlier show, this match typified our season in 90 minutes. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard enough. It's the hope that kills you. Next season has to be an monumental improvement not just in the playing staff but more importantly the medical staff, because the current lot have been posted missing. Anyone think a little punt on Simon Murray at Ross County would be worth it. Not first choice obviously but a 1st team squad member. I think he's as good a finisher as Shankland but at a fraction of the price, especially if they get relegated . I know he's 32 but ....

Marc Stewart

Felt very much like the 5-5 with Hibs in 2018. Madness game and one where massive changes were needed in the summer (and happened)

Ranger1972

Monumental improvement certainly needed Alan. I think you’ll be alone in the Simon Murray camp though.

David Stewart

Thought Scott Wright did okay this weekend. Maybe worth a start with his pace

Alan Cowan

He's kicked around the lower leagues but scored goals wherever he's been. A sort of older Nacho Novo if you can compare his footballing history

Russ

In fairness to Ross Dessers is pushing it fine on whether he's offside or not imo, which is criminal. I think the boy plays it to where Dessers SHOULD be, i.e. a yard or 2 behind the ball - Dessers is basically square!

Good point David with the correct recruitment and management we will be a lot closer than some of our other supporter forums would have us believe. With all their champions league money they are not that far ahead of us that we can’t close the gap and catch them. A Scottish spine to the team would help this.

Granters

Sorry fella but if the answer is a 32 year old journeyman from Ross County then we’re asking the wrong question.

David Baillie

Tav has been a brilliant player for Rangers. The downside as you lads pointed out is he can’t and never could defend. So why the f*** have 5 different managers not pushed him into midfield and play a solid, no nonsense full back who doesn’t let crosses come into the box. If we as a fanbase can see it why can’t the management?

Gary Brown

Thanks David & David for the flagship pod and thanks for all the other flagships and to the other podders this season. Going on the point the vast majority of Rangers supporters are adults, know the game, etc. So really the board don't need to come out and explain what the nuances are re the plans & objectives for next season. Everyone knows now what they are, what it'll take and it would be foolish to believe a snap of Phil's fingers cures all our considerable ails. PC said at his start how he wanted to play, we've not really seen that yet. Plagued by injuries which flabbergasted him, fitness not right for the fixture demands, which flabbergasted him also. Needed to win to get the fans back. Did. Got a tune out the peacemeal sides he put out, got them to a fitness camp in the break which worked, for a while. Got us back into a title race but the usual demons of fitness, injury and mentality caught up again. He simply could not blood youngsters or impliment his playing style in those circumstances. Just has to try and win. The man took it to the final week. Unthinkable in October. Yes we could, probably should, have won it. But really that would have papered over the very deep cracks in our fundamentals. The future trend would have been fkin Dessers, need strikers for CL qualifiers and the leadership group would be sitting unscathed. The rebuild is the same as Stevie G faced. Need to address fitness & conditioning, injury prevention & management, as well as implimenting playing ethos. We desperately need to apply the player trading model and revamp our recruitment policy to suit it. The vast majority, sensible support know, or bloody well should know, all of this. The board shouldn't need to be so transparent, about the plan. The manager has repeatedly mentioned the issues and in the past 2 weeks he's revealed he thinks its time for big staff changes too. Simply couldn't do so until the title was decided. And he's not the first to guild the lily - Gerrard rated Morelos between £20mil and 'not enough money' to keep that ego fluffed up and on the park! A bearing of the soul by the board now is both a stick to beat them with for past failings and a yardstick to measure them against, then beat them with if change isn't happening quickly enough for the the loud minority. It-ll only cause discourse, division and debate. Not what we need. We need to concentrate on us being unified. I get Tav has just too many miles on the clock, Goldson & Lundstrum too. They are all too slow but they entirely dictate our tempo. Others try to inject it, goes back to them and they kill it. Tav was slow as treacle until PC arrived. Got better after mid season camp but dropped off again post Benfica. That's bad enough but when combined with the constant breakdown of moves with his poor basic ball control and / or basic passing that's what has him well below the level we need and deserve. PC even altered his field coverage to reduce his milage per game. Should won in Gio's season (Ange's first win if you're using the C****c scale!!). Took us to a Europa final instead. No Timmy in Europe since end of November. Plus t the fannydazzlement by Gerrard broke a lot of hearts, fans & players - he'd recruited almost all of them! Add to that th3 passing of Walter and Jimmy Bell, the energy physical & emotional expended in the run to Seville. That is an outlier of a season. We were as good arguably better than that mhob that season. But too many of ours peaked, or broke, mentally over the close season. Or were they just burnt out? Or was it inflated ego? An ego obliterated spectacularly in the Champs Lge group. As the song says "CL? You're having a laugh!" And really it's been one big bowl of sludge ever since. Rebuild is 18 months overdue. Clement is the man to do it at this time, he is exactly what we need from both an experience / success / CV level and a man management level (& jockanese mhedia management level too!). Gives the man the 3 full seasons Stevie G got and the results will be better, the finances better and player trading in place.

I don't think I've ever known a cup final where virtually the whole support, or at least the overwhelming majority, were on such a downer going into it, with very few expecting anything other than another beating. And not because the opposition are so good. It's the fact they don't have to be that good against our lot, we just know we're going to make the same defensive errors we always do. We'll surrender midfield and we'll miss any chances that do come our way. It's the same shit over and over and over again. I don't think I've ever felt this dispirited before a cup final in all the years I've watched Rangers, and that's going back to 1969. They've sucked all the hope from so many of us. Prove all the doubters wrong Rangers, please!

Vanb bryceter

Totally agtee on recruitment we must get younger fitter hungrier players in. However Clement has talked about balance as in experience. I hope to god thats not the current leadershit group and if its not then the big man has some rebuild on his hands. Having said that im behind him and the early rumours of signings look like we are going down a road not travelled for us.

CRAIG CASSELLS

Just goes to show how two folk can see things so differently as I thought Wright was his usual self when starting a game, all but anonymous.

C. J

He also can’t pass, dribble, run or head the ball. Nothing important for a modern footballer.

Jamie Derrick

Some one told me Leon King was a midfielder in youth and absolute standout, their son played same age group. Is that true ??

Graham Roy

In fairness up until this season he was involved in over 50% of our goals. The defending was still an issue but we did find solutions (Jack used to cover and Goldson was in decent form). But it is time to move on and cash in on Tav however I do feel a lot of our support will be in for a surprise as we will still lose these goals!

Mark Boyd

Players get 600-700 games David, tav is at 581. Not his fault, just legs starting to go and it happens quick

Gregg

When he was talked about as a youngster it was always as a centre back from memory. There was talk that the coaching staff - earlier this year - were looking to convert him

Doug

Except Tavernier has been getting the numbers this year... The drop off has only occurred in the last couple of months, which is making things feel worse than it is due to the timing, as it's the worst time to lose form. But if you look at 22/23 vs 23/24... Goals 16 vs 17 Assists 9 vs 10 Touches 98.7 vs 99.3 Big Chances Created 13 vs 19 Key Passes 2.9 vs 3.0 Clean Sheets 13 vs 18 Interceptions per game 0.9 vs 1.0 Tackles per game 2.0 vs 2.0 Possession won 0.4 vs 0.5 Pretty much any stat you pick Tavernier has exceeded it this year compared to last . In many categories he is leading the team and not only that in the Top 5 or higher in the league as a whole. It's been an issue the last two-three months no doubt and as said team's are targeting him as a result. If we address that however, I think he could play fine again next year IF his games are managed in season so he has the gas to get to the finish line. Blending in a youth player, be that Sterling or someone else, into the RB position could provide a win-win, where Rangers continue to benefit from Tav's excellent output through managing his fitness and at the same time smoothly bringing through the next era of Rangers RB. It's clear though we can't keep relying on him playing 55-60 game seasons or this will repeat and could get worse.

Gregg

We shouldn’t expect anyone to play 55 games - other than a goalie. No wonder we are gassed at the end of seasons

Angus Mackay

I’ve been a subscriber for quite a number of years now and I think this is the best and most important pod I’ve heard on H&H in all that time. It’s pitch perfect. I hope that senior figures at the club hear it and I wish every fan would listen too. This is exactly where we need to go as a club and also the outlook that we need to have as fans. If we are to demand the transformation that brings success we as fans need to be realistic about what that will likely involve; but equally the club can greatly improve their chances of success by painting a realistic and honest picture for that fans about where we are. Absolutely tremendous stuff boys, thanks so much.

Adam

Everyone remember Maicon? He was one of the best RBs in the world for a few years, until he very suddenly wasn't. Then he came up against a Gareth Bale who was just starting to peak at Tottenham, nobody spoke about Maicon being great after that. Feels a bit like that with Tav atm. He's not had that moment where you think, yep, that's it. He's done. It's in the post at some point. I just hope it isn't this weekend and if he sticks around next season, I hope he's not relied upon week on week. Game after game. Fullback is a brutal position in modern football, there's a reason it's a position that seems to see rising stars in it season on season. We've relied on Tav too heavily in recent years, and I fear that's coming back to haunt us now, in more ways than one, too. We haven't succession planned for Tav, or even made an attempt to really, since Gerrard left and Patterson left a few months later. Gio, Beale and now Clement have had to rely on Tav being 'the guy' and it's been our undoing. None more so than this season, where quite honestly he hasn't kicked his own arse this last two months. It seems like we've finally got an adequate and albeit different deputy in Dujon Sterling. I'm not going to lie, I'm not one of those people who are desperate to see him move on in the summer, but I'd be lying if I said I don't understand those that would be.
