Groups C and D were completed today and the games were...mixed. James welcomes Tess to mainly discuss the England game against Slovenia, a scoreless draw which, despite meaning the finish top, leaves English supporters feeling extremely underwhelmed with what they are seeing.

Austria, on the other hand, are feeling on top of the world, or at least Group D, as Ralf Rangnick's side defied the odds to finish above France (following their draw vs Poland) and the Netherlands, whom they got the better of in a 5 goal thriller.

The 5pm games were good, the 8pm ones, not so much.

All England’s recent ‘achievements’ have been in spite of Southgate not because of him. Russia 18’ he was fine with the limited squad we had, but it’s clear with a team full of world class talent he is unable to set them up in a way that can dominate and play exciting attacking football. He should’ve been gone after Euro 21 and absolutely should’ve gone after failing to beat a weakened France team in Qatar. The echo chamber around the England camp where they feel immune from any criticism as well is worrying. All stinks of a loser mentality that comes from Southgate and Kane, where they are happy just to have a run in a tournament - a lot in thanks to the favourable draws we’ve had in recent years.

Emgland play The Netherlands next, no?

Heart and Hand

So many players we’ve watched blazing all over European football and he’s got them playing like that. It’s incredible.

I see and agree with the Southgate hate but the players are as much to blame. Their group is full of bums and they should have run through all three, regardless of tactics (mostly).

Warning signs were there in Russia 18 too - incredibly kind draw and they laboured through it with very few goals from open play You can't write off a world Cup semi final as lucky but it's no coincidence the first team with some real quality picked them off When your players are better than the opponents you will muddle through almost all of the time, but that can disguise systemic failings There's something unpleasantly familiar about all of this...

As things stand, yes. Depending on Group F results, it's either the Netherlands or 3rd place from Group E. Yep, I know, makes no sense to me either.
