Over the last few years, Rangers fans have got into the habit - or rather, Rangers have made the fans get into the habit - of being relieved that the season is over. After uninspiring performances, painful losses in big matches and many an off-field nonsense, the break has almost come to feel like a burden being lifted. The beckoning summer offers a chance to rebuild, to replenish lost energies and gear up for the next season's battles. This year, though, something feels different - and not in a good way.

Perhaps it is the thought of yet another squad rebuild after years of half-arsed or completely botched attempts. Maybe it's the Stadium fiasco and not knowing where we'll be pitching up to watch our side. Or could it be it's just inevitable that after a while, the downbeat mood from one season will bleed into the next? Hell, maybe it's the weather. Most likely it's a combination of them all.

The reasons can be argued, but what is difficult to shake is the notion of malaise. The factors mentioned - with the exception of the weather, which in fairness even the most performative Twitter hot-take machine would struggle to pin on the club - have one central theme: mistakes. There is a sense among the support that the club, to put it mildly, can't get anything right. Now, whether that is fair or not is very much down to the perceptive powers of the individual supporter but it doesn't change the perception. Rangers stumble along from one month to the next, hoping whichever latest swing for the fences we are attempting will work. It then doesn't, fans are asked to put it behind them and on the circus rumbles.

Signings are often a short-term summer fix but there's a Catch 22 inherent in Rangers dealings - namely, the type of signings that would excite the support are beyond the means of Rangers. The changing world of football finance has been difficult for some supporters to fully get their heads round. Simply put, almost every club in the EPL will buy a single player this summer that costs as much individually as every club in Scotland will buy combined. FFP is another area which some of the support struggle with when they say the board 'must back the manager' when the fact is that even if a Shiekh came in tomorrow he wouldn't be able to spend £100m on players without breaching UEFA rules. We have to live within our means and, for those of us who grew up in the 90s, that is incredibly frustrating.

The club's tendency in times like this is to keep its head down and try to let results, be they onfield or in the market, do the talking. It's an idea which comes from a good place believe it or not - they don't want to annoy the support with a load of chat and instead want to focus on delivering tangible actions - but that isn't the type of leadership we need right now. Being worried how words are percieved and therefore choosing not to deliver them is backing down, not pitching up.

The question isn't if Rangers are a bit of a mess in summer 2024. With no CEO, Head of Academy or even a place to play when the season begins, we demonstrably are. The question is how we intend to emerge from it. What are the plans? Where are we going? How are we going to get there?

Nature abhors a vacuum and in this age of social media, this silence will be filled by ever-louder, ever more shrill voices. We all know accounts who seem to exist in a perennial competition to be the angriest, the most upset, the ones ever aching to tell everyone else when it goes wrong that they saw it coming. It's as if they derive some sort of compensatory pleasure from this. In many ways, it's self-protection, trying to guard themselves against the inevitable disappointment. I've never subscribed to this because the hurt still hurts when it comes and I don't take any joy in taunting other fans that I knew it would. But when those voices are pretty much the only ones out there it drains the energy of the moderate support. That takes us right back to that word again: malaise.

Now, before anyone says 'it's only July 7', you are absolutely right. But I would argue these next three weeks are absolutely crucial in setting the mood for the campaign ahead. Business-as-usual is not an option for Rangers now because business-as-usual is exactly what we fans fear. The Chairman needs to address where we are and what he'll do to get us out of it. The manager needs to tell us about the team he is building and how he envisions it will work. Lastly there needs to be a club-wide acknowledgement that things have to change.

Rangers are not, as I write this, at the point of crisis, but anyone who says they can't see it hovering on the horizon is deluding themselves. This next month will, for good or worse, shape the whole tone of 24/25. Rangers still have the opportunity to take this moment, shape it and drive us on. Too often it feels like Rangers are a club where things happen to us, rather than because of us.

I count myself as reasonably optimistic and I don't think there is a single problem that can't be fixed at Rangers if the right directions are taken. Let's start by bringing supporters in on the journey. Treat people like adults and you'll get adult reactions. We know we're a long way from where we need to be - so set a course and bring us with you.

In short, they better deliver sharpish on all fronts or there's gonna be an "issue" come the AGM.

John Smith

Absolutely perfect David 👏 We as the fans hold the most power and we shouldn’t forget that. The executives and the board are custodians, we are the club 🇬🇧

Stewart Robertson

You’re right. I’m not bouncing, and I should be.

Stephen A

Nail on head. Painfully true read, yet no one at the club seems bothered.

John leitch

Good summation of where we stand right now In Limbo Rebuilds are coming too often We need to get the model right Keep Believing Our academy needs to be more productive

Heart and Hand

Not to go too Tim Hardin, but we need a reason to believe.

Andrew Proffitt

You have the knack of putting into words exactly the thoughts of all of us. This moment feels like a crossroads point and I hope to god we choose the right path.

Ross Matheson

In all seriousness though, come the time it'd normally be held, if there's a teetering of "season ending" developments on the park, it'll be reflected in the stands (of Hampden?) around that time too. We're verging on a fall out with the entire football and non-football operation

Craig

I don't known if it's just something that the online support passes around among ourselves until it feels organic or not, but I completely get the part about the pre season optimism not being there. Every summer I at least have the "might as well try to be optimistic" approach, but all I'm feeling now is dread that we'll be writing off another season by the end of October. Honestly the fact that David feels the need to publish something like this unprompted is giving me the absolute fear, as I assume people slightly closer to club than the rest of us can hear the jungle drums a bit clearer.

Heart and Hand

Yes, it’s absolutely in the stands it will be seen and heard. By those who go and, pertinently, those who don’t.

james whyte

Great read for all the wrong reasons. The excitement of a new season just isn't there for me. Yet. I fear I have been worn down over the last few years and getting back up isn't on me now. It's all on the Club.

David Angus

Great article and fully agree especially around the off field stuff / personnel. Signings wise I can't help feel we need outgoing before we get the experienced players in. CG, Tav, Cantwell, Lammers, Dessers, Lawrence and Davies likely 130-150k a week. Need that shed before we get in the more established players. Hopefully market starts moving soon. Not ideal for us as an earlier starter

Heart and Hand

I wouldn’t worry about the timing bud, it’s just I had the notion for the article and a bit of spare time. It’s things we’ve been discussing on the site the last couple of weeks.

Colin Kennedy

A very well set out note. I can’t help but think financially we are really suffering. Not Armageddon stuff, but perhaps more caution ⚠️ needs to be communicated to manage the frustration. I’d like to think I’m fairly grounded, but I genuinely think we are still 4 starting players away from a run at the league. The bigger concern at the moment is UCL qualifiers and our readiness. We also seem to be struggling to move players on. We know whilst Goldson and Davies are around, it’s unlikely we’ll spill 3m on a new CB, which for me is an absolute must.

Craig Mackenzie

Mt biggest concern is as mentioned the silence from the club. We are sitting 4-5 weeks away from our first home game of a new season not knowing where that will be. I'm not really concerned too much about the transfers ( or lack of) at the moment as its still early days. But would expect a lot of movement in the next two weeks to allow time for the very important champions league qualifying rounds. But like most, I'm sitting with the same unarsed feeling as I had last year. Preseason should be about hope and excitement for the season ahead. But a shambolic season ended and the shambles has rolled over into yet another.

Colin Carstairs

Sobering read David.. We as supporters can only sit & hope those in charge can steer the club into a fruitful direction.

Gregg

We hear this all the time - the AGM, Ibrox will turn. It’s yet to happen - almost like folk will it to as well

Lee Colvin

Been having these thoughts for weeks, well said David, being told to pay up and shut up will no longer do.

Ross Matheson

There comes a breaking point in all aspects of life. Changing boards in the last few years since the title win has seen grace periods granted but this lot are on their last legs now given their time in charge.

Gregg

Think you’re wrong Ross - they own the club there doesn’t seem likely to be people falling over themselves to change that.

Ross Matheson

Mibbes. People tend not to make noises about interest until closer to the time of it breaking. If it gets to the point that it might do, there'll be change inevitably. The board won't last even if some of the majority owners do.

Mr J K Murray

up beat due to the change in the core of the team players, will it be good or mediocre remains, once the articles of frames, & seating material arrive it does not take long to put up,it is when they arrive seems the issue,we had dome dull domestic seasons la, trust this will change, could bring out a malaise pie sir to go with ones chips, want some burma or stalag sauce with ii,

David MacT

Think this is maybe taking social media a tad to literally to be honest. In the real world people realise it's early and are waiting to see what happens over the next few weeks, as normal adults do. The OTT reaction to everything is mostly on the cesspit that is Rangers social media and places like FollowFollow, where, lets be honest, is filled with people you wouldn't trust to tie a pair of shoelaces.

Heart and Hand

The only way you change owners is with money. Fighting previous boards (and utterly failing to effect change) that was the painful lesson for me. See also Man Utd etc. It’s a comfort blanket people cling to that a support can change an owner it doesn’t like. Not without millions, it can’t. So when people say ‘the board is on its last chance’, the reality is it really isn’t.

Rod

I agree around the strange feeling right now but I don't think it takes much to light a fire under us.

William Black

Very well put David, it’s all just a bit “meh” for me. The signings so far, on paper at least, make sense, I just hope we get a bit of experience in with the loss of Jack (yes I know), and Borna (yes I know), and Lunny (yes I know)… Despite their injuries or form or whatever else, these are experienced heads that are gone, they need to be replaced with experience. The bit we need to get right is signing the experience that we can rely on 30/40 games a season as a minimum. The stadium debacle, I don’t know what everyone else felt about this but I expected something to go wrong - when it comes to us it generally always does. I think there’s more to it that we are being told, I’m not a drama queen but I don’t think we are back at Ibrox until October / November time. It all just feels “meh”, can’t remember being this disinterested in our preseason, who is leaving, who is joining… Can’t remember ever thinking “I won’t make it to Ibrox” and just shrugging my shoulders about it all.

Heart and Hand

The OTT stuff yes, but a lot of regular, normal bluenoses are telling me variations of ‘cannae be arsed with it’ which is, to me, even more worrying.

Michael Gray

i'm just astounded Bennett has not communicated with the fans since he took position as Chair. His whole spiel when he last talked was about improving communication and engagement with the fans. And like so many things at the club, delivery of promises e.g. trade models, youth development, has been half-arsed in execution.

Douglas Innes

The silence over the stadium is disheartening ..... doesn't say much for the SLO or new Fans Advisory Board

Alan

Nail on the head. I feel as if I’ve given up. I’ve renewed my ticket as standard but I’m actually enjoying the break away from Rangers and in no hurry to see it return. The last 12 years have taken a toll on the fans and after seeing green shoots of recovery a few years ago it now feels like we are further away than ever from being what we were before. It’s tiring and sucking the energy out of the fanbase. The lack of communication and apparent disregard for supporters also starts to breed contempt.

Colin McL.

I’m surprised - and yet I’m not - by the silence over the stadium. Even a holding update statement would be sufficient. The squad is also a mess. I think we have to hope Clement has the stomach for this - I’m not sure I’d blame him if he was starting to reconsider.

Craig Armstrong

I understand the no update until there's something to update that seems to be coming from the club, butbits been too long since we heard anything.

Ralph Wiggum

The malaise is due to the lack of drastic changes. What reason is their to believe anything is going to be any different? The fans are not stupid and there's a total lack of we see what you see from the club. We keep changing managers who start at 'year 0' with the players but we're 6/7 years in with certain players. This pre season feels like we're about to go on holiday to the same hotel we've been to the last 5 years which has been a let down every time. How else are we meant to feel?

David MacT

Not worrying in the slightest to me. If they can't be arsed then someone else will take their place. It's early July, most people, including myself, are still to go on holidays etc. It's just another sign that people spend far, far too much time concerning themselves with all things Rangers 24/7. Desperate for signing rumours every hour or updates from the club every single day about the stadium. Get off social media for a few weeks, enjoy your holidays and see how things are in a few weeks.

Russ

Sensible.

Stuart Sheils

Great post, I rarely comment on these David, but I was discussing with someone who works closely with people behind the scenes and they said something that struck me; it was along the lines of whilst the football side was all change since the spivs the back office was not and that there needs and there was plans for a big shakeup. They were making the point of the blue suit and brown brogues clique need to make way for better qualified people. From a purely governance perspective it’s very bad and if we were a public company there would be serious questions being asked- 3 CEOs in a year, a CFO (JT) replacing an FD who was only there a couple of years (KB), plus all the DOF/Youth etc- these are all key positions before you even consider the 1st team manager changes over the past 3 years- there is zero stability here which would allow any manager to be a success. Radcliffe has done a review of Man U and said that nobody could have done better than Ten Haag with the shambles of a support network he had around him at Old Trafford/Carrington… we could maybe say the same about us- I feel more sorry for GVB the more time goes on!

Rona Bluebell

Dear lord, it’s a bit gloomy on here tonight. The false dawn was a kicker at the end of the season but I think Clement is clever and can build something. Maybe we need a ‘shake it off’ pod where everyone gets to have a massive vent then we move on.

Allan

It feels as though fans have been taken for granted for a few years now. I think Bisgrove attempted to offer at least some transparency with more recent initiatives. We'll know just how much he was the driver behind those fan initiatives now he's gone. Honestly, I'm shocked, but not surprised at the lack of any real forward-facing communications from the chairman. Other than a couple of short pointed press releases, it suggests contempt for supporters.

Robert Atkinson

There are genuine reasons to have concerns over the governance of the club even by the end of last season. Delays to the statue, sports bar and NEH. NEH cost approx £10m to build and will generate £1m per year in profit. Thus it will take 10 years to pay for itself. There is still no “football man” on the board. In scouting players it seems we consistently underestimate the package required to bring them to ibrox, hence the number of protracted deals that break down. There is clearly no contingency for the Copland debacle - a contingency is a pre-baked plan B that’s ready to go. It’s project management 101. Yeah we cleared out the boardroom, but who are the replacements, are they any better? Doesn’t look like it at this stage.

Vanb bryceter

I think we need to appoint a john reid horrible cunt as ceo. We need to tackle the on pitch bias as well as the off pitch . It is depressing seeing young guys with potential being signed and met with apathy in the support. Im sure Clement will build us a team we can get behind based on nothing other than seeing what he did with his hands tied behind his back. The team will speak for itself. The bigger issue for me is being continually shat upon from all and sundry with no repost from the club. Bennet is apparently a clever guy he needs to come to the fore and set oit his stall for us all to see

Gregg

100% David - we should be trying to get the board to communicate more - which bisgrove did start - but it’s not changing because people have the hump. Worst case scenario- you piss them off so much that they are disengaged. Unpopular opinion - our fans have low expectations might not be a bad thing. Once the football starts people will get into it.

Andy Barnett

Everything about the club right now is second best (in some cases, worse). Accepting mediocrity starts at the top and filters down, so when board members allow standards to slip, it’s foolhardy not to expect the same from players and staff. Much of the club is in a poorer state than when Gerrard arrived. Back then at least we had direction and we all pulled together towards it. Now, the disconnect between club and fans is at its widest since 2015z

Leslie White

Where did this come from, for those old enough we’ve been down these depressing times before, and one thing the vast majority of fans have we get behind our team and manager. David I’ve read the post and I haven’t came across doom and gloom. I will agree in one area Mr Bennett has been conspicuous with media absence! I will counter your post by introducing a certain very dubious area and results/points a certain persons power over the men in black, until we address this matter, we could be in the same situation as last season!

Iain watson

Nail on the head! thought my annoyance at the club and players would have subsided but it's as raw as ever and I'm extremely worried how things are unfolding,I don't see anything to get excited 😕

Graham Jones

I think the fiasco over the work on t6he stand has pile onto the frustration. At the lack of action in the transfer market. When Igamane was announced of Friday to much fanfare, all I could think was this is now weeks old news, and it was just about the formalities. They wanted to are it feel like things were still moving, when we know that’s haven’t been. I don’t think it does any harm ton let the club know we are waiting and we’ve noticed things. It doesn’t mean we are shouting through loudspeakers or anything, rather we are a bit impatient to see some sort of progress over the next week or so. Like you said they still haven’t appointed a head of Academy, which should’ve been an easier one to appoint someone short term and put it on the back burner. Given how quickly they appointed Bisgrove, I expected a bit more urgency with this one. The Chairman will be doing what he can, but Bennet is a hedge fund manager, not an empire builder. He’s not liike Dave King in that regard, who has had to hire and fire people in business. If you get that appointment right, then some of the others fall into place because a good CEO knows how to steer the ship back into calmer waters.

Gregg

I think we should be taking our time in appointing a CEO - anyone decent will likely have a gardening leave period anyway. Similarly with the head of youth - this should be one for the long term so I don’t see massive benefits in appointing an interim. Just my opinion.

David Innes

A long way to go in the transfer window but sitting here today I’m as pessimistic as I have been going into any season since 17/18

Brian Cairney

About time the leadership of the club is questioned. It just feels like one mess after another. Whilst the scum are lifting trophy after trophy we are doing yearly rebuilds and false dawns. It’s draining on the support!

Spoon

I think the legacy of the collapse of the club and clawing our way back was perceived to be over by just getting back to the SPFL. Lots were content that ‘we were back’ where the issues from that period were strangling the roots of the club on and off field far more tightly than many allowed them selves to accept. We sadly haven’t been a team who builds much for the future, the 80s I recall to be mostly dire until towards the end of the decade, the 90s gave us a languor and laziness around developing players rather than just buying them in that haunts us today. We had a real chance on the journey back to turn the ethos to youth and energy but we couldn’t comprehend not being back asap. That was the time we could have built our academy stream and aligned it to the first team to actually coach and develop like those favours Euro academies we claim to admire do, we didn’t. We bought poorly, we over spent, we over hyped and we sat in the scud like the emperors new clothes pretending we looked the part. We we held onto bang average players as if they were Maldini reborn and we did it for a number of seasons further cementing the problem that’s come to a head the last two seasons. We don’t have the funds to buy the talent we need in the couple we need in one season to be at a level the fans expect or the title challenge demands. Our rivals are tweaking a semi decent squad with more depth than ours and despite being bang average they can keep us at arms length. We now need about 10 players in, about 8 to go out and then it all to gel in a month or we will struggle. We continue to obsess as a club with foreign markets building up guys that we sign unopposed to be gems in the rough while ignoring local talent that’s performing on our own league. We rarely develop or build anything in terms of young players, we have a mentality that guys smashing it in their own league will happily come, play but parts and perform at peak levels being rotated in and out, while most other teams give guys chances, game time and allow mistakes to let their players grow. My frustration with the club is a slavish desire to adopt a formation and be utterly inflexible. We can’t spot a key player these days and build a team around them but we are always striving for this model that will deliver free flowing attacking euroball in a league where defences are entrenched and space is tight, we want domestic and euro success where fundamentally the two games are totally different in demand on the players and team. We empty out guys who perform and fixate guys who don’t deliver as the key to unlock some kind of magic code that will the. A guy who was emptied from his previous club for being not very good or disruptive into a genius. The era of players like Gazza the flawed maestro are done, it’s a team game now based on graft and being disciplined not mavericks at our level. My big issue is we don’t seem to be learning, this isn’t new. Gio got binned after zero backing, Beale got over hyped almost as much as his signing were and this year it looks like Clements early good work might be undone if he doesn’t get some players in. I’m also personally not that impressed with the players we have got in when there are players closer to home that to my own mind are proven and we should be snapping up i.e. Shankland, the almost thrawn ignoring of a guy who I think would have tipped the balance last year baffles me. For me the idea that all these up coming starlets aren’t starters or the first picks and we will bench them and bring in more and better players isn’t likely. The defender didn’t come from breaking through at Milan to understudy Goldson or Souttar with all due respect, he was sold on game time and exposure. If Clement can’t see that a change is required to the whole set up, the team ethos and formation and we need people adept in the SPFL to recapture the title I despair. I also don’t find myself attuned to many who would empty tried and tested performers who have delivered to replace them with at best punts. Danillo is being talked up as better than Dessers when one of them played half a dozen games broke twice and we have no idea how he will hold up and the other was cheered off, banged 20 plus goals and stayed fit for the majority of games looking sharper and fitter as the season went on. I’m not saying Dessers is the answer but he’s a proven option and had resilience, Danillo is a total gamble yeet people already have him smashing it next year, defies logic to me. A few signings changes the mood. A good start and it’s all forgotten but…..if there are two or three injuries, two or theee draws or an early turn over in an OF game and the support will want this all ripped up and to start again quickly. Problem is, if you start again and do the same stuff how can you expect change ?

Stuart McWilliams

On the field, I'm strangely optimistic. If you go back to the Hearts game in February, we looked an exciting team but then injuries hit even harder and we struggled. I think the signings we've made might seem unspectacular, but there's logic behind them and they address some of our issues (more pace and directness on the left flank, a bit more grit and urgency in the middle compared to Lundstram and another striker option who isn't married to the treatment table). If Clement and his staff can get a proper pre season then I have hope for us. We need to get rid of some players so we can invest in quality but things look to be starting to move. The market we're shopping in hasn't really started yet, just look across the city and see Celtic, with their much vaunted bank balance, struggling to find a keeper they've known they've needed for months. Off the field is a different matter, and that's the major worry. We're similar to Man Utd in that we've been cycling through managers and ignoring that until we get the infrastructure right we'll always be limited.

SDF

Great post. There seems to be a train of thought this summer of "Wait until...." as if everything will then fall into place - Wait until the team are back for pre season, wait until the 1st July, Wait until the Saudi window opens. Well we're well into July and we haven't moved a single player out the door bar the five OOC and a third choice keeper on loan to Airdrie. I'm not saying we should be panicking(yet!) but I really don't see where we are getting the supposed £4.5m for Dessers and £3.5m for Lammers from if I'm honest that reports say we will. We've already heard Hagi's agent say he's struggling to find a buyer because the money being talked is too great. Throw in the likes of Davies and Lawrence on the nonsense wages we've gave them and I think we're looking at the usual splurge of loans(partially funded by the club of course) in late August simply to get them off the wage bill. It doesn't look great from where I'm standing right now

Rose Mcloughlin

I am afraid I as I mean my brain is on holiday..taking a wee break from the constant pressure of when my team are going to shoot themselves in the foot...I am missing the games..but after the build Up of new players arriving last pre season then the disapointment of the results...I will support the new players but will not get my hopes up until the good results start coming in...and get our stadium back.

Andy MacArthur

Good post. We have the right manager in place and positive signs in our new DOF. However the way the club is operating around them is painting a bleak picture. It’s very rare that a club that is a mess off the park can translate something different on the football pitch. Walter managed it in his final seasons and we can only hope Clement can muster a similar response from the squad. A few good signings, a new CEO and answers regarding Ibrox would go a long way to changing things. However the longer the club stay silent the worse it looks.

David

It definitely won't make £1m a year in the near future. January this year after 6 months trading we only made £30k in profit.

Ian McManus

Malaise is exactly the right word for where we are. We dropped off a cliff the moment GVB was replaced by Beale. Clement showed us the shoots of recovery which came to an all too abrupt end. The Scottish Cup final though gives me hope that we aren’t that far from reeling them back in… as long as the steel gets here before Santa comes.

Shevy Kapoor

Excellent post and your summary of how most supporters feel is spot on. Couldn’t wait for season to end and really apathetic for next season. Mr Chairman you need to come out and address the fans. We need a spark or something please!!

Paul fitzpatrick

Spot on Davie, I just hope they’re listening….

Stephen

100%. I can’t be bothered with this constant need to be angry. By the time the 1st game of the season comes around everyone will be well up for it. If not they can give their season ticket to me! People moan that we sign too many players last season and wasted money. This season people are moaning that we are being too slow to sign players! I would rather we didn’t just go around throwing money away again. I have enjoyed the break of not constantly looking for signing rumours etc. the levels of expectation are too high and it’s draining.

David MacT

You're not wrong. I've said it a million times but there's a large group of our fanbase that spend every minute of every day online obsessing over all things Rangers. It's not healthy. When I was younger you seen the back page of the paper and if there wasn't a Rangers story you got on with your day/summer. Now it's refreshing twitter every few seconds, reading message-boards all day. They then get themselves in a state of rage if they don't get an update about transfers/sradium etc every few hours. Everyhting is a 'shambles' 'disgrace' 'shitshow' etc etc. I've no idea how they all have the energy for it.

Steve Clark

Interesting read David.i find myself not commenting as much on Rangers matters on FF.the constant rage about everything Rangers really tiresome and coming up with the worst case scenario and putting it up as some sort of fact.thank god I have here which is much more level headed

Grant Hutton

A lot of the early transfer rumours have came to an abrupt end. Quite concerning and makes me suspect that the stadium fiasco might be worse than expected.

Marcus Black

Good summary and especially the point about the vacuum of silence. Talk of Murrayfield is ridiculous and I just won’t believe the club on any timeframe now

Samantha Paterson

Nailed it David, I find myself not ready for Rangers just now, still recovering from last season and the mess behind the scenes and not knowing what is happening in August is maddening.

David MacT

Yup. It's the usual hysterical reaction to absolutely everything by so many of our, lets say, emotionally fragile support. The online lunatics anyway 😁

Arran Anders

Think that echoes pretty much the majority of the support. As you often say David our support are fairly level headed and social media can be over amplified.

Simon H&H

In what should be a period of optimism in the pre season, most of us are pretty lethargic in terms of the new season. The fans are tired. The nonsense is endless.

Ally Jardine

We feel stuck in an endless loop of nonsense from season to season. Ironically the one season we escaped it was the 55 season when the rest of the world was burning. We don't cope well as a club with the circus element of football. That being the case, it would be great if we didn't continually pitch a tent (should that be crane?) in our own back garden.

Kevin Blyth

Well said David. I have no idea why successive chairmen and. CEOs have thought that non communication with the support is an appropriate comms stance. And I say that as a CEO myself. It’s an odd approach and one I thought was going to change under Bennett’s chairmanship.

Burnt too often in recent times. The stadium situation needs leadership. And leadership comes in form of communication. We need to know what’s going on. I believe the football management know what’s required in terms of playing staff and with that we are at the mercy of others in the transfer market, I expect this to go on until the end of the window with a couple of late loans. From the board though it’s been too long, they need to come out now and say what’s going on. 7 mores days with no communication and and this will be at fever pitch.

I shared season tickets with my dad and sister for years and decided to get my own for the start of 2017/18, the Pedro season. Convinced myself then to ignore my concerns about the manager and the signings, just like I'd convinced myself to ignore concerns the previous summer. There's been times since Gerrard where I've not bought into the hype, and others when I got swept away in it. I cannae be arsed. The standard of players we're bringing in aren't exciting, and the valid argument that we can no longer afford to sign ready made foreign talent from Europe, which just reinforces the negligence of our own youth development - which is going to be tanked for a further year with no head of academy and no meaningful matches for the B team - doesn't change that. And to the Ibrox fiasco to years of "whatever can go wrong, will go wrong" and I'm just done pretending to myself. It's also hard not to be pissed off at the club over Ibrox right now. I pay close to £600 for a season ticket to watch us play there - not Hampden. And at present our only source of information about the negotiations over where we're playing seems to be Keith Jackson. The silence from the board is deafening.

This is an excellent summary of the emails/messages I’m receiving every day from supporters. Not social media attention junkies, just ordinary, sensible Gers fans. If the feeling is as widespread as I think it is - and obviously there’s no scientific method but I’m fairly confident it’s an accurate representation - then that says it all imo.

Superb piece, David. I think the following line nails it for me. "Too often it feels like Rangers are a club where things happen to us, rather than because of us." That isn't the Rangers any of us grew up with and it needs to change. John Bennett seems like a good guy, but things seem perilously close to getting away from him at the moment. He needs results and he needs them sooner rather than later.

We're a shambles. Thought after 2015 it would be an upward trajectory, but outwith the gerrard building, leading up to Seville. They've made a pigs ear of it. Aribo, morelos, Kent, barisic, kamara and even goldson and Tav should've been sold for huge profits.

Can't stomach the hooped horrors sauntering to another title.

I recently read David Holmes book. The current situation at the club seems similar to when he first came in.A general malaise, with a board of old men in blazers who seem bewildered as to how a football club should be run. They seem perplexed that as they may have been successful in other businesses, why are they not successful at our club? We do not expect perfection, but they seem to be making too many mistakes.

I'm relatively happy with the football department. Lots of reason to be optimistic. However, the board by their collective silence are treating us with contempt. We need leadership. Even if the news isn't good we need to know. I have no doubt regardless of any bad news we will rally behind the team, as we always do.

Spot on David.

Jonathon Wales

Nothing but apathy towards Rangers just now, the first time I’ve ever felt like this. An absolute spot on article David.

Stephen McIntyre

Spot on article. The way we finished the season scunnered everyone but usually come July everyone is buzzing for the friendlies to start before the season gets underway. The stadium news has knocked the stuffing out of everyone, absolute shambles and puts us at a huge disadvantage for a massive August. Hopefully the players step up, the fans will be there for them as usual.

Some large % shareholders have invested a lot of money in Rangers - Mr Bennett will have to convince them by the AGM that he is worthy of their vote to remain as chairman - mainly by bringing in a new leadership team. Interesting times ahead..

Apathy has taken over from anger for me

Robbie

We need communication but it needs to be clear and with answers. They need to get this done and quickly. No point in another statement that basically says that there will be another statement we need answers and plans going forward now.
