Kev caught up with Alex Ireland to discuss his new book - Double Diamond 100 years of Umbro.

They chat Umbros foundations, impact on modern marketing and best Umbro moments in football.

Double Diamond is the story of Umbro, an ever-present figure in the development of modern football and the multi-billion-pound sportswear industry.

From Sir Geoff Hurst's World Cup Final hat-trick to Sergio Agüero's 2012 injury-time Premier League-winning strike, Umbro has featured in more iconic footballing moments than any other brand.

Alex is a good lad - worked with him for a long time!

The best kit manufacturer we’ve had IMO. The 80’s kits will never be topped.

My favourites: 1992-93, 1994-96 adidas, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1987-1990 Umbro, 2007-08 Umbro, 2010-11 Umbro, 2020-21 Castore, 1997-1999 Nike. As a kid I had the 1986 Scotland Umbro kit, including the shorts, which I quite liked. Remember seeing a Carribean team in Umbro play a WCQ and they had the strip across the shorts. Gillette World Sport Special - blink and you missed it. Wonder if it was Puerto Rico or a team like that. Interesting listen. Would’ve liked to understand why the Nike kits deteriorated.

I think we discussed this on a strips show, We fell out with Nike and wanted to do our own shirts. Look at the early Nike strips compared to the later efforts.

I actually found this very interesting, never realised how big Umbro were. Thank you

I’m old enough to remember the box Umbro strips around mid-late 70’s. Particularly the Scotland strip for the 1978 World Cup

Fascinating and brilliant listen, cheers Kev, will look out for this book👍

Umbro are probably my favourite kit manufacturer. I'm old enough to remember the kits in a box for Christmas, and they lasted for more than one season!

Stewart Robertson

Kev. That was an excellent show. Really enjoyed it, and brought back a few happy memories.

My Ma got me the Scotland box in 82. Strolled into PE like I was the Baws, only to find my mates wearing the new silky one for the 82 World Cup ! My Ma had got me the 1978 kit in the sale 😭
