Celtic 3-0 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 1 Sept 2024

Same movie.

Comments

John Cox

David - do the managers post match comments concern you re. highlighting only really the first 10 mins, and the ages, rather than admitting responsibility / performance not good enough - is he not slating them publicly as similar thing happened last year after the dundee 0-0 game

Duncan Smith

It would be easy to write an expletive-laden rant after watching Rangers today, but I don't think it would do anyone any good and provide ammunition for our phonetically challenged friends over in the East. This blue-nose who grew up with the riches of Gazza and Laudrup – which I think is why the last few years have been difficult for this mid-50s man to accept with today having an air of inevitability about it with the usual patterns of play and culprits to blame. The seeds of today's defeat were sown by the Board when we didn't back Gerrard and then gave a relative novice £18 million to spend last summer – then subsequently, when we didn't strengthen in January when we needed firepower and ceded the league to Celtic. However, that's the past, and there's nothing that can be done about it. I think what is more productive is to ask what success looks like in this season - and, as a club, whether we are heading in the right direction. I think we need to be honest as a fan base and accept that this is a transitional year. Although miracles are possible, it would take a brave man to bet their house on us to win the league this year. With our squad this year and Celtic's resources, it is highly unlikely that we can meaningfully challenge. I know many of you will criticize me for being defeatist, and I hope that you are right and I am wrong. But we are all Rangers fans, so remember that we want the same thing. We want success and to reclaim our place as the #1 Football Club in Scotland. I know this is difficult to come to terms with, gut-wrenching and humiliating. But if we're going to go through this pain of being second again, then what is the plan for next year. What will more resources and two transfer windows bring? Let's have the Manager and the Chairman have an honest conversation with fan media in a series of sit-downs with us about how we get back to where we want to go rather than everyone being s@*t, and let's sack Clement. Sure, there are still players that need to be moved on, which was evident today, and big Dessers reverted to type today. But seriously, how will we get ourselves into a position to mount a serious challenge for the title this year or next? Who and what is needed? Do we have the right board and the right manager, and are we developing the right style? Let's have some honest answers to some serious questions, and then how can the Board communicate this to the fans in a way that allows us to support the project moving forward rather than descend into the usual rant about how poor we were – as much as I want to !

Baz

Totally agree with everything you said there David. 💯 spot on.

Charlie Nicolson

David, there's never a "plan b". Warburton was correctly ridiculed for saying "do plan A better". There's an unwillingness or inability to recognise that something isn't working. Keep doing the same thing, keep getting the same results = madness

Arran Anders

Can’t disagree with any of the Davie

Jamiedfa

Spot on Davie, men against boys out there today

hugh yates

The real scary part of today we are not 1 bit surprised by 1 our performance 2 by the result we are miles off it from the team to the full club

Andrew McManus

Today was just another part of the ongoing omni-shambles that is RFC . Clement is now dead man walking - in the eyes of the fans and media - a fate which will harden before the New Years Derby! As for the Board, what is there to say, antipathy is setting in - with fans - and that’ll be seen at the tills in both retail and EL, next year’s renewals will be interesting. Rays of hope? Difficult to see them, the Board - even if they were competent - have given themselves an almost impossible job. They need massive slices of luck now.

Steven Spalding

Spot on David, as usual. The disallowed goal had the opposite effect on both sides you'd be hoping for. We visibly dropped off at least 10 yards after that and our press became non-existent in final 3rd, when it had looked quite effective previous to that. I don't know if that because the celtic players took lift from seeing how easy it was going to be to penetrate us and we also at same time, thought oh fuck look how easy it is for them to penetrate us off the back of 1 failed press. But it had a visible effect on rest of half and as a result they were able to take control of the game and the goals were pretty inevitable. Biggest issues for me isn't a gulf in quality (which does exist). It's the gulf in desire and the gulf in belief. You need to at least match both of those if you have any hope of bridging the quality gap. It's 1 of the first things Gerrard did, was to ensure that there was no fear of this fixture and as a group we looked like we relished it. I don't know where we go from here. Make no mistake, the manager is under severe pressure. That's now 5 games without a win, or in reality, cup final aside, ever really threatening a win. That won't be allowed to continue much longer. The fans simply won't allow it. But at same time, we cannot keep changing manager year after year.

Gordon Campbell

Depressing. Same old, same old. At the moment we’re miles off it. I’m not saying “sack the manager”……we can’t and won’t but he needs to appreciate the immediacy of the challenge. Too many ‘projects’ being bought, not enough signings who can immediately make an improvement to what we’ve got.

David Innes

I don’t think another new manager is the answer but the pressure on Clement to win the new year game at Ibrox will be immense. My gut feeling is he walks at some point this season

David Whyte

Rinse and repeat, scunnered

Simon Lewandowski

david I agree with everything you say here but in all honesty can you see this manager sorting this out? I'd say today was worse than anything we saw last season we have no shape,no obvious style of play and we certainly have no desire. as it stands we are just another team fighting for second place...I will probably be shot down in flames but that's honesty how I feel

Billy Forrester

One name, Tav, as we knew. When we persist with the captain, who I have fully backed in the past but it’s now clear he is well below even normal levels then we have huge issues. He is sadly simply not good enough now, shouldn’t even be picked week in week out. This Sterling in midfield claim is pish, he should be right back, simple as he can at least keep up with opposing defenders. He isnt the answer in midfield unfortunately. Clement, who I back needs to see what other managers haven’t and have the balls to cut the Captain free and drop him not only from the starting 11 but from the captaincy or else he will cost another manager his job. Why has no one the balls to sit him out. I’m fucking fuming and also sad at what I witnessed today

Spoon

We keep getting sold the wrong standard of player as fans and I have no confidence that the transfer policies or department are actually looking for the right profile of player. Cerny and Propper looked miles off the standard we need but were pitched to us as belters. Felt sorry for Jefte and Barron who did ok but on a team that were a shambles. We need to focus domestically on our set up, signings and football.

David Baillie

Spot on David. We can accept (grudgingly) a gulf in quality but the difference in aggression and physicality is a real concern. More bastards required.

Douglas Morrison

Agree with previous poster Tav is in danger of becoming the Managers achilles heel.

Bill McCairns

Brutally honest David but needed to be said.

John Breen

No doubt the Tav post game interview we’ll hear the same old bullet points. Learn from our mistakes, disappointment, we fell short and we need to take our opportunities

Spoon

The more interesting part is who does he blame when he walks, we already know what he was sold isn’t what he got. By the sounds of his comments in window he has been promised something he didn’t get again in terms of numbers.

Allister Cooke

Igmane still looked really over weight?

Davie R

Sadly, this looks like the gulf in class is now firmly established. Not one of our players gets in their team and in our financial position that is not easily or quickly remedied. The manager is repeating the Warburton mistake of persevering with a plan that does not work with the players we have and there is no plan B. We started on the front foot, till the first ball over the top took out our defence, then panic ensued and we again looked like a team that knew what was coming and had no idea how to stop it. Hard to see how this sorts itself in the short to medium term. The Europa League games look terrifying. Distant second places and the odd cup win will not sustain the current business model, which relies totally on the commitment of the fans to continue to spend, when the hope is gone. Very worrying.

Graham Jones

Not there result we wanted, but we need to stay calm all the same. The manager has a lot of work ahead of him, because now he knows where the team are at right now. The defensive side our game is woeful right now, so they have to get that part right before anything else happens. We’ve been in a worse position against them, and we turned it around. It’s a sore one right now, but the players need to learn from it quickly. I think we need more experience of these games around the players. While Alex Rae is a good coach, he didn’t to play many of these games. I’m wondering if Steven Davis might be someone they could’ve looked to bringing back in , because I think he would help players in these situations.

Vanb bryceter

For me given all circumstances it was a free hit. I think we knew we were too early into this rebuild to meet them head on. Clement has to show us what type of team he envisions we are going to be. We need to go on a run until we meet them again and then lay down a marker. Im not getting involved with the Tav crap its clear as day what needs to happen or Phil is writing his own p45.

Scott Duncan

Hard to watch that Groundhog Day performance today. The jury has been out on Clement for a while now, but I fear the verdict is nearly due and it’s not looking good.

Jim Stewart

Tav that is all I said before the game and will say after the game

Paul Durham

How can the manger not see playing a number 10 doesn't work in these games. The game is always won in the midfield. We get bullied everytime. Go with three in the middle and make it hard for them to play.

Jim Stewart

You can’t tell a player to cover for Tav because he’s shite Soutter will play well it he has a centre back next to him he has confidence in propper nearly scored his second goal for Rangers Our manager said Butland can’t be sold fuck sake wish we sold when premium was high same old same old will get a good payoff at the end of the season the Rangers way

Craig Stewart

When the manager came in he spoke about his 4 pillars, “For me there are four very important pillars in the way I want to see a team. I want to create here in the club the best technical team, the best tactical team, the best physical team and the best mental team of the league..." Great soundbites, but absolutely no evidence that we've made any progress in any of these pillars, far less being the best. He spoke after the game and it is becoming more and more evident listening to him, he tries to gaslight the fans. Ignoring how his team capitulated once again, he instead spoke about being clinical and taking our (offside) chances at 0-0 and how it would have been different. Then points to good moments in the second half, conveniently forgetting Celtic had taken their foot off our throat and were off the gas, as the game was finished. He may be without the 16 players he's let go, another excuse used as a deflection, but he failed to get a tune out of them either and that's why they're away. I accept we are short in quality, but I do not accept our team is well coached and that's on him.

Glen Kane

Clement was lied to by the board when he came in and was given a new contract to stop him from walking. His budget has been slashed and he's expected to win games with a project team. I doubt he'll be here at Christmas.

Derek Killin

A worrying word that more and more fans are saying is "Apathy". That must concern the Board . Also the club must appoint chief Executive Officer before another ball is kicked.

Grant Laing

Baron okay? Can we stop glazing the favourites, was the same for butland but folk now turning

Spoon

Yeah Barron was ok, got about the park, shut down, put in tackles. All that despite little support or help. Butland has been over rated from day one, spills far too many balls. Never glazed a favourite in my life.

Andy Gray

Spot on as always. That’s 5 Old Firm games Clement has had and we haven’t laid a glove on them. Yes we’ve had major decisions go against us but as an eye test there really hasn’t been any improvement against them and ultimately that’s what players and manager are judged on. Also, when the dust settles major concerns about Diomande considering what we paid for him and his continued lack of impact in these games. The days of Davis, Jack and Kamara dominating the middle of the park are a distant memory.

Graeme Burns

Tone was set after 10 min when Barron won a challenge vs Kyogo but got pulled back after the Jap threw himself down. Message was sent by Beaton - you can’t touch them. Some of the bookings we got were unbelievable.

Graeme Burns

Here’s a strong take - Butland is no better than Wes Foderingham…

Billy Forrester

Manager seems to See things in this team that don’t exist, I hope his stubbornness with a system doesn’t cost him his job

Andrew McCormack

In all honesty where do we go from here?? Clement said we won’t see the best from us till oct-nov, we cld be out the title race by then

Billy Forrester

Results will determine that but if the cheap option is available our board will take it, u can guarantee that

Jimmy Price

I keep hearing about this fabled rebuild but as yet, I’ve not seen anything that makes me think things are getting better. Yes occasionally we’ll pump a jobber team, as in RC, but that’s nowhere near enough. As for the manager telling us not to expect much until October/November, the league could be over with by then. Rangers aren’t Brugge where you can fanny about building a team for a season or two. Manager mentioned post match about not taking chances, again. Well maybe if he’d brought in a fkn competent striker, that wouldn’t be such an issue. I still maintain our summer transfer window was a shambles. I’m quickly getting to the stage where I can’t listen to him say the same old same old. And as for Tav...

Ben

Feels like I’ve heard this pod like 10 times already before. Manager needs to be asked why he keeps picking the same captain who continually loses the same goals, it’s absolutely maddening

Billy Forrester

Agree, it will cost them money so they will not sack him. However when we can’t be arsed going to Ibrox to watch this shite and won’t pay their exuberant prices for Europa league pumping then maybe it will open their eyes. Not that I want clement sacked, yet !!!

Billy Forrester

His interviews are starting to grate on me too, wish he would just come out and call a spade a spade and say that wasn’t near good enough, he is starting to sound robotic and also delusional

Craig Holmes

No point in blaming the ref he was poor on both sides, he brought back fouls when he should have played advantage for them, we were poor and deservedly beat, let's hope the new boys get up to speed and we can take points off of them in January

Ian McManus

How we’ve got to this following 55 and the run to Seville is quite staggering.

Cameron Broadfoot

Agree with you totally David, most of this is on the Chairman and his predecessor whose out of control spending actions led to this window being a cost cutting exercise. And this squad is what we are left with which is not good enough because we can’t spend

Daniel Ward

We have a board who are downsizing the whole club, and downsizing our ambitions as a support. Put up season tickets 2 seasons in a row whilst downgrading the whole squad. For all the managers flaws and there are some (tactically, stubbornness, baffling subs at baffling times)we have armed him with a water pistol to go assassinate the enemy. We have a squad full of squad players some decent some poor and some atrocious but that lots whole bench starts in our team without a doubt. Tavernier should never start another game for this club, mccausland who i don’t see as an spl player has had 50 appearances for the club whilst promising young players in the b team haven’t had a sniff.

Andrew

Get rid of the No10 for a start flat 3 across the middle. Stop them walking through the middle of us.

Andrew Hillis

Bloody hell that was horrendous! Clement is a fucking fraud btw

Alastair McGeoch

I wish Clement would come out and say “it’s not good enough, there’s non negotiables he expects to see out on the pitch” etc but he keeps shielding them. His blind spot for lundstrum seems to have transferred to Tav. Clement needs to use the international break well.

David McBurney

So what do you want to do David? Sack Phil? Our hands are tied because of previous management balls ups but to turn round and blame the manager for today is borderline lunacy.

Graeme Burns

Seems easily beaten from distance, just like Wes,… Buttland is a myth, far below the standards set by McGregor

Andrew McManus

That may be a logical (and realistic) assumption but it’s bloody unacceptable, more so because this was the discussion last year, and the year before…the fans will leave this merry go round and we’ll be like the early 80’s…nowhere and with plenty of spare seats.

Graeme Burns

Did you agree with the first half bookings for Jefte, Diomande and Sterling? The referee is a factor and his extremely harsh application of yellow cards blunts our ability to engage physically. There are many problems internally, absolutely, but not scrutinising the performance of the referee is an error.

Stace1ofthePeople

I'm as pissed off as everyone however Gerrard took 3 years for 1 trophy. Gio won 1 sc and a European final and got chased. Beale won us FA. PC has been giving a shite budget and is expected to overcome let's not lie to ourselves, a decent celtic team with a massive budget. Yes we can question effort, fight desire and tactics etc but recycling manager will not get us out of this mess. PC needs another full season and potentially another summer window to continue to build a squad and try and work with what we have. I'm not accepting the defeat by any means but I am accepting that phil said there will be bumps in the road . A new manager in my opinion changes absolutely fuck all with again no money to spend or time to make any sort of error or mistake. Time (the thing we don't like giving managers) and money (the stuff we don't have). Genuinely think it's an absolute shite situation to be in but we have our backs against the wall and we need to push on. Obviously it just feels "samey" to the support and it would have been nice to have seen some glimmer of hope today or light at the end of the tunnel. Good goals, good passages of play, fight and dig but we didn't see any of it. Shite 👎

Heart and Hand

No, ignoring manager’s mistakes is lunacy. The idea that you need to pick one thing and that automatically excuses the others is lunacy. The board, the manager and the players are to blame for today. We all want him to be a success but pretending he couldn’t have done any better is just wish fulfilment. No, I don’t want to sack him but I have concerns. Do you want me to say everything’s great and the manager is above criticism? In which case, I’m afraid I can’t.

Heart and Hand

I wouldn’t have played Tav, I’d be going with a 352 and flooding the midfield to limit space and I’d have had a midfielder detailed to pick up Kyogo when he came deep.

8luenose1872

100% not, we all know how they hurt us but sending them out the same and just asking for more intensity doesn't stop it. If this isnt the game that makes him realise certain players aren't good enough in this game and he needs to change something then i agree that its a huge concern regarding his ability as a manager. When players are that weak mentally it probably wont matter what he tries tbh though.

David Innes

Next few months are massive for him. If he doesn’t deliver the promised improvement by October fans will start voting with their feet and that may end up forcing the board’s hand

8luenose1872

I just think he's checked out, i honestly think he wants a move so we should cash in in January b4 his price gets too low. Kelly will do a job until we find another next summer, fk he might even surprise us. Hope its just the anger after that performance that has me thinking that about Butland but the drop off is pretty staggering.

Adam Williamson

That was absolutely soul-destroying, and every bit as bad as any performance against them since we came back up. The fact Clement can’t even set a side up to frustrate them and get even close to a result is a huge worry. We are in total disarray from top to bottom. The darkest of times.

Mark Oliver

It's now time to drastically alter the culture of the football club. It probably should’ve happened in 2012 but all this 'world's most successful club' stuff is not helpful anymore, and in fact after this year we won't be able to claim that anway. We need to realise where we are, stop obsessing about stopping them winning things and put a plan together to become a proper functioning football club again in 4 or 5 years' time, or maybe even longer. The club is a shambles from top to bottom, we are in danger of becoming another Aberdeen so now is the time to have a huge rethink of what we are and where we want to be.

Alan Thomson

There’s no leader, no quality and no belief in that team whatsoever!!!

Davie Brand

Sobering account David, but accurate. Clement, Board and players, really letting us down.

KMc

Questions do need asked of the manager - why perservere with a potential dud showing no signs of progress? There are poorer managers with poorer players that appear to be better coached and drilled than us within the league. I think we all know how it’ll end for Clement.

Barry

Players need their captain in games like these. They had theirs bossing midfield & we have a shrinking violet that capitulates against them as well as each time we are in a title race with fans in attendance. This weak mentality rubs off on new players!

James Anderson

Every Rangers captain I have seen, Grieg, Gough, Ferguson and co, after going a goal down would go round each player and roust them up....Tav does none of that....he saunters away....

James Anderson

Clement is a European style manager like Gio does not let much emotion get into the game. Gio similar in nature, got us to a European final, but an old firm battle takes a diferent mentality and couldnt lay a glove on them.

Calum McManus

Get Ferguson in around the club, somebody who knows what it means. At this point why not try Lovelace, McKinnon, Devine, Fraser, King, Rice - what have we got to lose ?

Steven L

The gio bit doesn’t wash. He played in them, he felt what it was like, he sat in the dressing room.

James Anderson

Agree to a degree, but he still has the continetal mindset in management You cant ignore the fact that he got us to a European final, but still couldnt lay a glove on Celtic. Gio as a player for us had good Rangers men round him who did understand what it takes and that helped him through. We lack a captain who knows the ropes

Martin Sutherland

Gerrard took over a 3rd place team and beat Celtic within 6 months. His record in derbies was outstanding. It took him a while to install a winning mentality but you could see within 2/3 months his impact. PC won an open goal of a trophy and has taking us back every day since. No comparison.

Martin Sutherland

The title race was over when the board didn’t invest in the squad. The battle for second is firmly on though

Stace1ofthePeople

Fair point. But Gerard still only delivered 1 trophy in that time. Also lets not forget covid saved gerards arse big time. Imagine another defeat after the Hamilton game, would he have recovered and had the opportunity to take us to the league title? Although hypothetical my point is if every manager keeps getting binned they wont get the time to make these 'big changes' we need Its of course all doom and gloom today but we could go on and win stuff this season so within less time clement will have got us more trophies than Gerard but if we sack him well never know? Is my point.

Mr J K Murray

put them all in der glass house, lack of discipline with a ' ball,as a team, you question why they are footballers, der adulation, der wages, physical perfections, & we get blatant wasters, arseholes, injury prone, the whole lot even bad tactics, management give us supporters a side that not been seen since the 80's in getting beat 5 times by the papists who are not that good, der college style football, learnt nothing, season after season, dumping ground for misfit footballers who do not care as they would not keep doing it, lol, wheres oliver cromwell when you need him, suppose to raise the prestige of our club not demise it,

C. J

50 games in, I’ve seen enough from Clement. He’s our Ten Hag.

Scott Stewart

For me Tavs the least of our worries. Very easy to blame the captain. Call it how it is… what about dessers two pass back. ( shots ) what about Mccausland misses , what about clement thinking Diomande better than Cantwell. What about the other 10 players other than tav today . Butland had howlers dating back to 3 each game at ibrox when he should have saved at least one of the three goals. Then cup final. And then again today. Dessers constant sitters , Montondo wanted off after five minutes. Dear deary me. What a mess. From top to bottom. From Board room to ball boy. Genuinely think it’s worse than the relegation years. Appalling not a single rangers man in There. Alex Rae had more desire and commitment from the dug out.

Scott Stewart

Btw Jefte got a torrid time all day in particular in the first half, two goals from his side and motondo was appalling , souttar and propper were poor also. Not a single pass mark in the entire team for me . Second is last in Glasgow. But it’s that bad we’re now fighting to finish second and accepting the title won’t be ours already.

jason hart

This really really hurts to type this but on the subject of managers.. I loved the idea of bringing in a good European manager fresh ideas and tapping into a European market but what we need to fix first is domestic success and I don't think PC or this squad gets it .. we need a old school scottish manager .. forget European football that's a bonus we need to produce on the home front first

Simon Botterill

100%. Gio is no doubt a strong manager. What he was involved in as a Rangers player V what he was involved as a Rangers manager is completely different, Celtic run this league now and Gio was/not capable of dealing with Scottish football. PC is not much different, none of us understand why the SPFL/the officiating/lack of objectivity but you need a manager/set up that understands the environment you are dealt with and there understanding of how will need to be completely adapted. Tav was a very good player and no doubt a very decent person but completely unsuitable as a Rangers captain in Scotland. We must adapt our approach, we must become utterly toxic and deemed nasty. Add the relevant people. Scottish football is globally unique, I am not sure enough fans understand it's not normal.

Andy MacArthur

I want to back PC, but my confidence in him is continually breaking down. His post match comments were Warburton like. Imagine Walter Smith after a performance like that. He would have been apoplectic, not trying to tell us about the solid 10 min start we had to the game. Managers who can’t beat Celtic won’t survive at Rangers.

Martin Sutherland

Phil isn’t it and never has been. Tactically dreadful. Swap the managers around yesterday and I guarantee Rodgers doesn’t get battered in that manner that Phil did.

Paul fitzpatrick

Don't disagree re Tav although pre-match most supporters wanted Sterling deployed in midfield. 3-5-2 could have been interesting, at least it would have presented them with a different challenge but I don't think it's part of Phil's autonomation philosophy.

Stace1ofthePeople

But do you genuinely think another manager can come in again mid season and win us anything and suddenly start skelping celtic at parkhead? And if they don't how long do they get to beat celtic before. They are chased? I'm backing phil for now because I think we need to that doesnt mean i am happy. Im raging about yesterday result and performance. As I said I think he needs the season and potentially another window. We've had 4 managers in 4 years it doesn't work. I genuinely think clement doesn't have it much easier than gerard. We are also up against a better celtic team with way more money than 4 years ago. Bucket loads more with better players. We won the league with Neil Lennon managing that lot also. They crumbled. So I could be wrong and Phil may not be the manager but I genuinely don't believe recycling managers is gonna work

Tolmie

Back post tav, that is all
