After the excellent response to the debut show, and comments made in the recent post-match press conference by Philippe Clement, the Psycholo-Gers, James and Alex, bring
you a very engaging discussion specific to player workloads and sleep!

With multiple references to the FIFPro 'Player Performance, Recovery and Health Report' (Men's football, 2024, available here: https://fifpro.org/en/reports/202324-player-workload-monitoring-report) this conversation considers whose responsibility it is to ensure that players are not playing more games than they should be, what the impacts of insufficient sleep are to professional players, and what could be done at club level, and nationally in Scotland, to protect players from excessive workload.

Thank you for listening, and please do leave your comments and feedback below, as all opinions and perspective will shape topics and inspire discussions for future episodes.

Very interesting cheers lads. Please can you research and revisit in detail the time between landing back in Glasgow from Malmo and the 12:00 Sunday KO i.e. what the typical player actually did? If you could break this down I think I and other people would understand much more clearly. Many thanks. Kenny.

Great show. Very interesting perspectives. Keep it going

Good show, enjoy the discussions. But - why 5 games? Why not 6? Or 4? Seems pretty arbitrary to me. You could play 5 games in 2 week or 5 consecutive games could be spread over a 6 week period - the demands on the body are not comparable but in both situations you are prohibited from playing a 6th game. You started the pod saying we need to recognise footballers as individuals. Introducing blanket rules which apply to 20 year old and 35 year old equally doesn't recognise players as individuals. I agree there is too much demand on players. But introducing a rule like that is not the answer. Also, nobody is going to die on a hill striking for a rule that's viewed as arbitrary either.

Really good and fair point, I pulled 5 out of thin air tbh and used it as an example. Nevertheless, I do think we’re going to see some changes - either in games in set period (I think this would be in X number of days rather than consecutive games). This might be player-led, we are going to get to a major crossroad soon as 70 games in 50 weeks isn’t sustainable. I think we’ll be returning to this topic in a future pod!
