We actually seem pretty good at identifying and bringing in low risk / low cost players who end up fairly successful. Kamara, Aribo, Barron, Butland, Jefte, Souttar, Bassey, Morelos Vs Dessers, Matondo, Lammers, Davies, Danilo, Yilmaz. That has to improve drastically. Get the big signings right and no way we are in the shape we are in just now. Obvious i know, but annoying.

Great pod David ( piss on ma hands ✋️😁 ) things have too improve as fans we can all agree with that I'm hoping that's the case 🤔

Lot of talk about a defensive midfielder. There’s a player on the free right now called Alexis Beka Beka who I think could do a job for us

Vanb bryceter

Steve Davis for DOF. Clement does have a limited pool to choose from however he does have alternatives. Its clear Tavistock is off it and we have imo 2 alternatives Sterling or nana elsewhere he could shift Berjami into the 10 with a bit of jigging about with jefe moving up. Up top he is battling but January isn't far away The question is can we get to January without being holed below the waterline

Tommy

Good pod, I enjoy the Q+A’s. David you’re spot on in terms of what we need to do as a club. It’s staggering how we’ve managed to fk up the recruitment so badly. I’d personally prefer we didn’t go down the ex player route mind you, instead focus on people who have actually done the job. If it means bringing someone in from down south then let’s do this and don’t be scared to pay what we need to pay.

I honestly think it’s too soon to judge the squad longer term, and the same with the manager. Winning a trophy gave him some leeway last year, and probably the result he got in Spain as well, but he fell short int he Old Firm games. He closed the gap last year, but they were an inconsistent bunch and lacked the personality to carry it over the line. He clawed us back into a title race, gave us a lead and then those players lost us the title. They lacked the personality to win a title, and he has been given the short end of a very small wedge this summer. The board let the man down, and he would have the right to walk away in all honesty. He hasn’t, and we should be grateful for that because I dread to think the what the list of candidates for this job would look like if he did. I also fear the idea of this board trying to hire a good manager now. The real damage has been done at the top, and while I think John Gilligan has tried and to an extent succeeded in calming things a bit around the club, he has also made an error in wagging his finger at Dave King for speaking out. All King did was speak truth to power, and while the likes of Graeme Park might be spitting blood at that, Gilligan should’ve been more candid about the comments. He actually defended the antics of the board by the tone he took with King’s comments. I don’t know if King would’ve been able to help had he returned. But I do know there is zero chance of it happening because of the bloc vote within the boardroom. There are personalities on the board who clearly have decided it’s personal with King, and for the past three years King has made it known that it’s now mutual. I don’t think the club will ever move on until we have a string CEO who has the power to act without one to two people on the board blocking him from doing so. I just think a good CEO will come up against the same problems while the same board of directors are present. That doesn’t;t mean that the shareholders need to sell up, but maybe they need to put in different personalities to represent them on the board. They do need to resolve the CEO Quaker than they look like they will though, because it is running the reputations of the club the longer it continues. They messed up with Jim Gillespie who was the pick of the Park bloc, on the board, so they need to assure people that the final choice this time is a serious decision based on the qualities the new CEO possesses. We can’t have stooges running the club form one or two stakeholders.

Granters

Yep, it’s the ‘big’ signings we keep getting wrong. The ones we’re paying big fees and/or big wages for. Problem is, the market we shop in (£1-5m generally) is very hit or miss.

Wee dig about the conversation we had last week about Lyon being 8th in Ligue 1. Think you’ve taken my point out of context and made it’s suit your argument here. I made that point to show it wasn’t a high flying team we were playing and if Clement had altered his tactics we could’ve 100% competed with them. We made them look better than they were was my point. Your point about “where would we finish in ligue 1” doesn’t add up either. We’ve competed for years in Europe against German or Portuguese teams in one off games for example whilst we’d still likely be bottom half in both leagues over a 38 game season. But in a one off game at Ibrox, with the right set up we should be able to compete with Lyon. Otherwise great pod and totally agree regarding a ceo being about not being a quick fix. It would however give us a bit of direction if it were to be the right appointment.

Heart and Hand

Wasn’t a dig mate, it’s a legitimate point just not one I agree with. We’ve competed in two-legged ties. Over a league season we’d be, at best, bottom half in most top 5 leagues (possibly not Italy where the dropoff to the bottom half is huge). Could we do better domestically? 100%. But this, to me, is a fairly average squad which when it runs into genuinely elite players will struggle.

Heart and Hand

Agreed but could we then put in place a longer-term structure where you have ex-players learning under them? Clubs abroad have a pipeline.

Tommy

Succession planning is an alien concept to Rangers Football Club. Apart from when we lined up Ally as manager and it didn’t work too well 😁

Nikky Cairney

Agree with the squad being average in places. But can’t shake the feeling we can be better than what we are showing with a better set up. Probably where I’m at with the manager now that I’m finding it hard to see what he’s doing well. From now to the next international break will make or break him.

Heart and Hand

I don't think that's unfair. I don't think Clement is a bad manager but nor do I think he's an exceptional one. And with this squad, I really fear we need the latter.

Graeme Burns

Think that’s fair - Lyon’s league form could have been described as ‘patchy’ - but they’re playing a higher standard every week. No reason we can’t give them a battle in a one-off game

Graeme Burns

This notion that it will take 2-3 windows… to do what? Compete in Scotland?? Nonsense. Ignoring them, we comfortably outspend every other team and should be winning the vast majority of games with the resource disparity. A target of 96 points in the season is very achievable. What they do is on them. Focus on us.

Rose Mcloughlin

Thanks everybody who asked very interesting questions...and for Davids discussions on them.....we are in hard times right now but if in 3 transfer windows we start to have a decent team I for one will grin and bear it and also some results we will no doubt have...but as I sat in shock in 2012 and was scared to death , then you told me in 2024 Rangers would still be playing in Ibrox, was in still in 2 cups...sitting at the top end of the league and gave many big teams in Europe the shock of their lives I would have been estatic...so keep the faith and stand strong together.

Heart and Hand

If it’s nonsense, that means you think it’s a title-winning squad already. Personally I don’t think it is.

Graeme Burns

It doesn’t mean that. It means that I don’t buy into the logic that we will be unable to win anything in Scotland nor perform in European competition for 18+ months. More resources and better players than 10 of the other teams in a 12 team division. As easy as it is to say we lost the league in the h2h’s with them, it’s just as valid to say losing to Motherwell, Ross County and drawing at Dens in quick succession killed the title bid. Just keep winning vs the rest and it will take us a long long way…

Hendi

I hit the odd birdie at the golf. So by your logic if I can hit 1 each round, then there is not reason I shouldn't be able to go round 18 under. But I can't, because I'm pish. Those birdies are counter balanced by multiple double bogies. We had freakishly good results in Europe in recent years. We performed far above what we 'should be' capable of. We are now returning to the average of how we should be expected to perform - mostly (but not always) beaten by sides better than us; and mostly winning (but not always) against sides we are better than.

Scott

Clement is not in a funk. We are performing exactly as we should be. Celtic have just won every single league game and deny if you want, thats affecting peoples judgement

Heart and Hand

I didn't say that either though. I was asked how long it would take to build a successful squad, which to me means a title-winning one. I said 2/3 windows as we've already had one. You said that was nonsense but if you don't think we've got there in one then I don't think we're disagreeing?

Graeme Burns

I think we have enough about us to enable us to compete already, and the absolute metric of 96+ points is attainable. I’d consider that a successful season. Gerrard did it once and before that you would need to go back decades to Walter, maybe even McLeish. I don’t think we’re capable of dominating across the board though, and maybe that’s where we are differing. I also see that you apply a relativistic qualifier to identify a successful squad - namely a title win. In sport I can accept that winning trophies is important. However, the downside to viewing success in these terms an in our particular context is that EVERY match becomes a proxy against them - given they’re the biggest threat to us winning - , and ultimately it leads to some fairly irrational behaviours when a non-perfect event occurs - like only beating st Johnstone 2-0, rather than 6-0. On paper they’re better. As they were during the 55 season. We need focus, intensity and effort from everyone - it can happen this season. Sadly though I think the issues in the boardroom will hold us back in the end this season.

Graeme Burns

Do you think the league last season plays out differently if Sima had stayed injury free?

Heart and Hand

I don’t think our current squad is as good as our 20/21 side. I think we’re short of quality and if by ‘compete’ you mean finish 2nd to them I agree but this squad won’t beat them to a title.
