I would dump Dessers and play Igmane. Dessers doesn’t deserve the start and Igmane deserves the chance

Graeme Homer

You can’t blame Butland hahaha seriously no wonder we have issue, the ‘keeper can see what is front of him and should be shouting out commands and doesn’t, he’s not a leader like so many claim. He’s a failure and again no wonder we are where we are. So in front of him he has three men on the right marking two! He’s got Barron like a fart in a trance standing off the crosser, just standing and watching the ball go in! Souttar rightfully is watching his man about to run in and covering it, the only right thing done! Then we have the clusterfuck between Jefte and Pröpper all in front of him and he’s says nothing and then falls on his arse when the ball comes in rather than being commanding and getting out and claiming it. The pedestal he and many others are on has been granted too quickly and they remain on it far too long, while guys who achieve more are discarded like absolute nobodies.

Simon H&H

Absolutely. Dessers should be finished now. We all said the guy would be one of the main reasons as to why Clement loses his job and so it will prove.

David Innes

Butland was overhyped last season because he was such a massive upgrade on what McGregor had become. He is English Championship level like most of our squad

James McSween

Iain saying Alex Rae should be advising manager on players for our league. It looks quite clear that Clement doesn’t listen to any of the coaches on the bench. He is to stubborn to listen, hence we play the same formation and tactics every time.

John Smith

Bulka is my ideal goalie

David Kiltie

The contract extension was just one year. The downside was a bigger compensation package. The intended benefit, which has obviously not materialised, was to make a statement to disgruntled players that they were not going to outlast the manager.

David Kiltie

You discussed the potential tension between domestic and European success. What is so disappointing is that good results in Europe this season have failed to give us a lift domestically. After the great result in Greece the flat game v Hearts was such a letdown. In terms of finances, coefficient points and prestige Rangers cannot push Europe aside.

Spoon

Enjoyed the pod as always gents. While I agree with a lot of what was said I do actually think the titanic analogy is spot on for us right now, despite there being clear quality in team the failure of the person at the helm to navigate the environment properly has caused catastrophic damage and a we are now slowly sinking. For me we are well beyond scapegoating players given the utter failure of this managers set up, coaching and ability to comprehend what’s required in the Scottish game, like some before him he is complicating a league thats fairly simple. Be organised, be energetic, be committed and if you can add a bit of talent or tactics to break the other team down you will do ok. Fancy formations, complex automations, sports science, and stories are all well and good if you can pick 11 players and put them in a shape that is solid and carries some threat through our better baseline talent levels, and ideally a bit of tactical tweaking to prey on our opponents weaknesses. This league loves defending in numbers and its quite good at it if you give the teams a chance to funnel back and get set, it also likes crosses and keeping teams out wide. We for some reason have elevated to play either laboured build up, with the occasional shell it forward moment, go wide and then hope the one guy in the middle who doesnt like that style of play might manage to do something. Our plan B is to sit a bit deeper and see if the solo guy can run 30 yards passed 3 big units, spoiler alert…he can’t. Change the donkey up front some people say with some merit, despite what many podders here and elsewhere say Derranged Dessers Syndrome isnt universal, but the issue is our other forwards are usually injured or when they have had a chance they have also done very little in what is a deeply flawed system. Even at the weekend the bright spell of 20 minutes from Igmane and Danilo didn’t actually produce any goals so to make out this simple change solves things isnt really borne out by scorelines. At what point do we accept that having guys on 4 year deals raking in a fortune and churning out the odd 40 minutes isnt good value? When is it time to say that Igmane might be hot property but it doesnt seem like it will be in this league or in this system, reality is both our alternatives have looked bang average when they have actually clocked up some minutes. Which to be honest brings me back to my first point, I dont think Dessers is great, I dont think Danilo is a total loss, I have no idea if Igmane is good or not in his case its too early to tell but what I can say is that changing between the three of them when they are all available has not made any significant improvement to this team, that’s especially true in terms of scoring output. You may choose to put forward reasons for this, for me personally the reason is the team dont create enough chances in general but the bigger issue is that the quality of chance is poor regardless of personnel. The issues dont just sit with the front three though, the middle to front guys dont create or produce nearly enough chances never mind goals between them for a Rangers team. Cerny is the latest guy to be overhyped in my own view, decent, flits in and out of games and turns in about 30 minutes max a game, thats not enough. We had Kent doing the same and folk thinking he was a legend, the thing I will give Cerny is that he has at least banged a few goals but I never get particularly attached to loans as he isnt ours and by the time he’s up to speed he will be winding down for his next move. Bajrami like a few others looks like all the early promise and energy has been coached or leeched out of him, again in fairness to him being stuck out wide isnt his gig. Dio has dropped off a cliff and we seem to have yet again bought a product having only looked at the good reviews and his sought after status rather than asking if he fits our league or play style. The whole team in general has been regressed by this manager and coaching ‘team’, I confess to having no clue who actually makes up the first team or general coaching staff but whoever it is should be emptied they are taking us backwards at an alarming rate. We need to be honest about Europe and stop building our whole operation towards it. The simplest way to get revenue and build to European success is to win the league and secure a slot, that should be our sole focus and goal. Every asset and all energy should be there. I get the club have loved the extra ticket revenue and the fans have had some amazing nights recently but it seems to have overshadowed our core function, to be Scottish Champs. Sign players with physicality, some dig and with energy, set them up to be solid then trust that our having access to a better baseline of talent, better facilities and just a better calibre of player we can craft a team that should never be worst than second. A rangers team in Scotland should always be dominant and carry threat, we are current just a toothless tiger and for me it’s on the manager. We have flaws in our players, I fully accept that, despite defending Dessers to an extent I am not blind to the fact he isnt a good fit for this system, it could also be argued he isnt the best fit for Scottish football. What he was last season was scoring goals and contributing and I believe we could have got more of the same this year if he had more support and wasnt left isolated and deep against a set defence. A partner and a team pushed up 20 yards would have improved his chances of continuing a decent goal output. It wouldn’t have solved all the failings in his game but at least it would have played to what strengths he does have. No matter what 9 we have played they have all struggled to make a meaningful impact consistently for a variety of reasons Dessers gets more ire perversely as he is the one continuously available to play. Between Danilo and Igmane you have the bones of £10 million in investment, are we genuinely saying the return to date has been good ? The excuse no doubt some will put forward for Igmane will be he’s young and he’s new, he isnt. 20 isnt young anymore and months at a club isnt new, we need to get all that nonsense in the bin its an excuse and a poor one other teams dont use. Despite all the flaws I perversely think this squad has the bones of a decent team, there are a few who probably just wont make it but the majority have a chance used properly. My fear is that we are destroying some of the players, particularly the younger ones potential career with us before its even begun. Clement has to go and it’s actually annoying that even the positives in the team currently feel empty as it’s only delaying what we all know needs to happen. Roll on December the 16th. That being said wouldn’t be surprised if we actually win tomorrow, it’s a basket case season.

David Kiltie

Steven mentions the club doing the decent thing by offering Dundee United pre-match facilities at Ibrox to alleviate for the delayed journey. Another example of doing the right thing was under Beale when we let Partick Thistle equalize after Tillman scored in controversial circumstances. We may be a binfire of a club at all levels but that doesn’t preclude being able to act with class. In both cases SMSM didn’t make much of the incidents IIRC. Imagine the fawning adulation that lot across the city would have received?

David Tod

Can’t polish a turd guys.Great pod.

Calum Robertson

Great review guys, as usual. Should H&H rent Steven to Rangers before each match? Might help provide better insights and tactics! Also liked the comment from Iain about player character. Reminded me of a convo I had a few years back with a Rangers ex-scout. He told me that Rangers looked for "the 3 As - Ability, Athleticism and Attitude; the most important being Attitude". Absolutely right that we want skillful players but without the correct character/attitude they will not succeed at Ibrox.

Iain Campbell

I stand by what I said. Butland is powerless in that situation, Dalby makes such a clean and powerful contact, they he has no chance. Butland is the least of our current issues

Ross Stirling

Another superb analysis from you guys, I'm admittedly always really curious, if there was a (say for instance) Nice, or SpurSpurs or any opponent really podcast that done analysis on us the same detailed way Steven does on the opposition, what do you think they'd say about us?

Craig

Don’t ever change Stevie - love listening to the analysis

Doogz

Hope Alex Rae gets emptied alongside Clement brings nothing to the table

Linda Mackay

Players looking disinterested, that's an absolute disgrace and they are just as bad as the manager. Sick of all of them...it's not just the manager's fault, it's a collective. Could easily see the back of the whole management and playing staff!

Iain Graham

Listening to this waiting to take off to Nice. A tough listen. But we carry on.

Graeme Homer

Sorry but he’s is a massive issue but he’s a golden boy so the issue is ignored, the same problem we’ve had for years with Kent, Lundstram, Cantwell but we give them a song and platform to stand on and ignore it all and blame the guys that actually have stood up, lead and performed. He’s doesn’t command his box, there’s no leadership and it shows, the defence is worse since he taken the gloves. The fact he’s seen as a leader and a star player is why we are in this mess. He could see what’s in front of him does nothing to make his defenders aware of the situations and then isn’t even set right that he slips and ends up on his arse, an absolute failure on his part. Raskin shouldn’t be out with Cerny and Sterling, Dio shouldn’t be where Raskin should be, Jefte is left in two minds as Bajrami leaves his man to him and he’s got to cover the run into the box or Dalby’s, Propper has to cover the other man as Souttar has the runner into the box and as I’ve said nothing from the keeper and captain. He’s a fraud and failure and never a leader and a waste of money.

Graeme Homer

Danilo, Igamane, Eadie and Gentles should all be above Dessers now. However we all know it’s just not going to happen.

Graeme Homer

Also to compensate him for the pulling of the rug by the board. He was promised so much and didn’t get it, so the new deal gave him a bit of protection and protected us incase he was poached.

Graeme Homer

Nice fans are worried that if we turn up like we have in Europe they will get a doing. They have split the form in Europe from the league and think we are dangerous. Dunno about spurs not looked at them.

Jordan McKay

I did a quick check and (numbers could be wrong) Clement has made 13-14 changes at half time this season that were tactical (I.e. not injury related) I felt he was doing it more regularly than what appeared normal but the number genuinely startled me. He’s averaging a half time substitution in 2/3 of our games. That surely points to a manager who either doesn’t know his best team or doesn’t have the bottle to make many big decisions.

Jamie Gourlay

The board should be sent this podcast as it's how 99.9% of fans are feeling.

Iain Campbell

He's kept us off the end end some proper pumping. He's far from a fraud. Tell me a better level of keeper we can afford?

Graeme Homer

The list would be massive for the wage he’s on! It’s no wonder he was a bench warmer in England. He’s crap with the ball at his feet, he’s crap at coming off his line, he’s crap at long shots, he’s crap at commanding his box. What actual positives does he give us for what we are paying? McCrorie was more impressive in his few appearances, McGregor on his decline was far better. He’s as bad as Dessers at putting us in bad situations but again is my point, give him a song, demand him to be captain, place him on a pedestal and ignore how shite he has been.

Iain Campbell

McGregor in his decline was simply tragic. Comparing that era of his career to Butland is fanciful at best. What would be your suggestion going forward as a replacement? Genuine question

Graeme Homer

It would depend on if we sold Butland and what fee we got. However Munn and McCrorie won’t be any worse and would help in homegrown status and would improve than being stagnant and declining. If we look outwith of Scotland James Beadle of Brighton, Noah Raveyre of Milan Plamen Andreev of L. Sofia The list could go on

David Smith

Bang on Steven as always
