Hoggy still hasn't got his you know what together to interview Eddie Goldberg, but he will! However, three wins on the bounce and a much better performance against Kilmarnock leads us to:

  • AGM - and no nutty questions asked....what is this madness?!

  • Performances, squad, manager

  • And a wee walk down memory lane - it's 23 years since PSG v Rangers and a penalty shoot out!

If you want to come onto the show (especially next week with a look back to League Cup Finals of old), email hoggy@heartandhand.co.uk.

Enjoy!

Hoggy, pleased you nipped in the bud the “Scottish refs are against us” nonsense with excellent use of the actual facts. I’ve gone 60+ years happy that I’m not a moon-howling conspiracy theorist, paranoid that the world is against my football team. There is a place in Glasgow for such fruitcakes.

Rona Bluebell

Im trying to trust the process, I’m just struggling to understand the process. This sudden new formation, why didn’t we do this from the start? Baffling. As always, if we win all is fine.

Re PSG that season sums up my frustration with Advocaat and the UEFA Cup. He should have made at least a semi but we simply didn’t take that competition seriously (and yes I know Eck was in charge v Feynoord) Re the £810k, all that needed said at the AGM is that is the net amount after transfer fees and monies owed to player. I don’t see that is confidential and shuts this debate down

The manager is hardly going to say “aye we know what we’ve got to spend & where we’re going to spend it” Music to the ears if he’s starting to keep more things to himself rather than try & give an answer to every question he’s asked, in his tenure so far he’s said far far too much. Even if he was to turn everything round he still has to learn to bat away half the shite he’s asked.

Ewan Taylor

Great listen, thanks for taking time to dissect my question too Hoggy.

Great discussion about possibilities with such as Dumbarton We need an outlet for our Academy Scottish Football does not have a model that promotes a pathway for young players

PSG trip was epic. There was a French air traffic strike. We ended up flying to London and travelling over with London Loyal 2 busses. Stayed overnight in north of France and visited The Somme on the morning of the match (very sobering as u can imagine). French police were very handy with their batons pre match and met Alex McLeish after the game so went home and put a small wager on him becoming the next boss.

I appreciate there is an overwhelming desire in some quarters to slate certain players, ironically it’s normally those who play the most, but I was interested in your point around how we project player value or worth. The media absolutely play a part in raising profile of players and in a wider sense how the league is marketed in Sky etc will play a part but not sure our opinion on players as a fanbase really matters. Most scouting now is digital and data based and we are a strange little league where a players character seems to matter more than their chance conversion, career goals and physical performance data i.e. sprints or distance covered that others use don’t interest us. Lammers has played around 40 games since leaving and has hit nearly 20 goals since moving yet we still consider him to be the problem. Couldn’t it be that we simply don’t have the set up or coaching nous to use players ? It never ceases to amaze me the loyalty and projection that some put on guys whose contribution has been minimal (and expensive) while they gleefully put down net contributors. Lots are rushing to push the change recently has been personnel up front, some of which is true, but the bigger issue to me is the set up has been more aggressive, more players have been playing in their preferred positions. Against Dundee Utd we were pretty abject in an attacking sense, as we were against St Johnstone, that was playing the guys who in Europe and against Kilmarnock were relatively quiet and suffered from the same isolation and lack of support Deser had for the majority of the season. It’s no surprise to me that Dessers gets two goals (which many will want to write off as not important) in the more dynamic system, I genuinely wonder if the manager just let them play their game the other night or if he he set that up. Having been so pragmatic and doctrine based to suddenly go 180 to fluid interchanging and a single midfielder sitting is quite a leap. I’m not defending Dessers faults but I am saying we are terrible at not judging apples for apples. This remains the issue with the manager in my mind where his negativity and lack of ability to draw the best from his system and at the same time countering an opposition still hasn’t been evident. Where you have general dross and the occasional result, statistics tell you the less frequent games are the outliers. As a wider point year on year as a support large sections quickly turn on strikers we bring in. I wonder if we as a support even realise what a decent striker is in the modern game these days as we remain obsessed with a guy who bangs 30+ and wins the golden boot Super Ally style. I personally am bored blaming the goalscorer for the lack of team goals. Colak for example was binned and not developed despite an excellent goal to game return and many relevant skills, but he was gash up alone and given no chance to develop in a better set up. Dessers clearly is a box striker who needs lots of chances so why not play to that strength or even better get two up front and use his skills. Too many strikers come, get little support, have huge expectation piled on them and then get written if as if if they are the problem. Perversely where there is an available striker in Scotland banging goals we ignore them as too boring, domestic or limited. I worry we have totally lost all perspective on what we need and what we can reasonably expect from a striker and it feeds into this real over reliance and often vitriol towards the 9. Much of who which I think is very unfair. We, as you rightly say, can’t be slating our players then wondering why the board think they better just get rid or face mutiny ! Enjoyed the pod as always.

Apropos the massive loss against the claim we are financially sustainable, there are 3 main factors in the bottom line. Operating profit/loss - this has improved massively over the last year and the drop in the wage bill since the end of last season should see another major improvement over the next year. Also the revenue base has seen several incremental improvements with improved sponsorship deals, the opening of NEH, new catering deal. Player registrations - we made gains on Sakala and Camara but the amortization charge was very high. The previous years were the outlier - large gain on Patterson, then Bassey and Aribo. Non-recurring items - this line has been hit repeatedly by the profusion of nonsense in terms of lawsuits the club has been involved with over the years. The Elite deal has now been settled. The deal that Green made with Ashley was absolutely ruinous. As I understand it King made a mess of facing down Ashley over the Sports Direct deal, but we could not have meekly accepted that arrangement. Other patrons will know the details better than I do.

David Kiltie

On the balance sheet Trade Receivables and Trade Payables are significant amounts under Debtors and Creditors respectively. These lines will cover the elements of transfer fees owed both to and by the club. I imagine the £810k figure will be the net amount of a very complicated picture.

Great pod Hoggy, cheers for answering my question

The £810k is in the post balance sheet events note, it’s related to sales after 30 June (the date of the accounts) so no it’s not captured in the accounts (P&L or Balance Sheet) at all I agree though, if it is net then just say so

Hoggy, I think you miss the point Stven Dunn makes. Essentially, we are penalized against all other Scottish teams who simply fall over with the slightest touch. These are the fouls your stats point to. These end up in early bookings, players being actively removed from being competitive, and our performance being dumbed down by trigger happy referees in Scotland. Meanwhile, our opponents eventually get booked after 80 mins for (under the radar) fouling all over the pitch. Eventually fouls are given and the stats seem to even up as you describe them.

John McTrusty

That game in 86 v Borrusia Munchengladbach was my first euro away. Character building Monday to Friday on The Tudor Bus from Paisley. Europe by bus is an endurance test... but memorable! Brothers in Blue done a few. Cologne, Bayern... good times with exceptional characters.

Keiren hastie

Can’t look past being negative towards matondo. The guys a complete waste of space and seeing him act the joker does my head in. A total Leach to the football club

Duncan Kee

Really good content as always - I’m based in Perth in Western Australia and over here, we really rely on H&H to keep us up to date. Well done and keep up the very good work 🔴⚪️🔵

Barry Kerr

You're absolutely spot on about the refs Hoggy see foreign refs mentioned all the time on Europe but never why they would be better or even what sort of level countries would send us. Pointed out a few errors made in games against us and they get ignored. There's some now on refs (especially on FF) in the same state we've laughed at them for years about being paranoid etc. Mainly comes from people who don't want to learn the rules or have zero idea on how VAR works as well.

Stephen Dunn

Exactly John. I'm not sure how my points were making out there's some referee conspiracy against Rangers. What the stats won't show is how many fouls are let go v us before a booking is given. It'd be interesting to see how many games at Ibrox where we've had the 1st booking or more bookings than opposition players despite having the ball for 70% of it. There's been a few post match Car Pods that have highlighted how the opposition can have 4 or 5 blatant fouls but as soon as we do 1, we're the first to be booked for it

Stephen Dunn

Think you've jumped in with 2 feet here. I'm not saying all refs are against us and screaming conspiracies, I'm saying the refs are that poor, they impact our game. What the stats that were read out don't show, is the amount of fouls that are let go v us and don't show how many times we're booked first or have more bookings than some of the jobber teams despite having upwards of 70% possession. Plenty of post match Car Pods have highlighted that at Ibrox, the opposition commit about 4 or 5 fouls that go unpunished but as soon as we do it, we're booked. There's been poor referee displays in Europe but the standard is a lot higher and majority of the time they are competent enough to let the game flow instead of the stop/start that's constant in our game in the Premiership.

Alan Weir

We have had some ridiculous decisions against Celtic recently, Stephen. However, I have friends who are supporters of “jobber teams” - Falkirk, Motherwell, St Mirren - and I think they would have some justification in their outrage and laughter at the suggestion that since the 1970s, when I started watching, Rangers have received a rough time when up against the diddy teams.

If you've not done it already, listen to the Flagship today. This exact point about domestic refs v euro refs and impact it's having on us as a team was brought up. If you think refs in this league are not impacting how we play in some games then I don't know what it's going to take.

Alan Weir

Just finished listening! Of course the refs impact our game, they have since I started watching about 50 years ago. We have had some atrocious decisions go against us and some absolute corkers go for us. I do think Celtic’s current dominance on (and off) the pitch inclines the thinking of our largely hopeless refs in their favour. Was there not an unbelievably bad decision, at Hampden, in a European game just this season which underlined there are plenty of diddies in Europe as well? Time for my sleep - keep the faith ‘cause I think we’re catching them soon, refs or no refs.
