Motherwell 2-2 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 29 Dec 2024

David unhappy after another dreadful half leaves Rangers chasing at Fir Park.

Comments

Rona Bluebell

Ah David. It’s been a long road but it’s now the end. Fresh start for 2025.

David Campbell

Am not even angry anymore it's just sadness at what we have become and most of it is self inflicted. It's time for change. Give everyone at least a little glimpse of hope please Rangers and bin the manager.

Colin Gardner

Call me cynical but that team that started was a "sack me now" team. Starting Cortes who has played no minutes is just incredible. He is contradicting himself and that's enough for me!

Stephen

It’s mad he lost 5 points trying to protect players for the old firm game that we will probably lose anyway.

John Johnston

Just one shit show after another, Clement should be packing his bags and go now with a bit of dignity.

stephen

That team screamed I'm packed and ready.

John Smith

Dessers should’ve stuck to acting

John Smith

Clement should’ve become a chef

Stephen

If we are as skint as we are told the only way I see out of this is to sell Igamane for what we can get and use the money to sack Clement. Not good business but it’s probably the most feasible solution.

chris smith

Just sack the baldy bassa (no, not you David) ;-)

Daniel Ward

His team he picked today was a plea to be put out of his misery. The board either don’t have the balls, brains or £ (or all 3) to fire him. But if they wake up tomorrow morning and 20000 people have seatsubbed Thursdays ticket then they’ll sack him.

Billy Forrester

I couldn’t even cheer when we scored, it’s just no fun anymore. I will say it’s time for Liam Kelly to get a run, Butland is a bomb scare lately and is costing us a lot of goals, he should not be undroppable

John Smith

Holy Fuck did Big Phil just call himself a stupid manager ?! That’s it. It’s over. That’s like when Tim Walz called himself a knucklehead

Jim Milne

I'm 46, and according to the stats the year I was born was the last time our away form was this bad. He has to go. I usually write long comments but not today. Fire him, and fire him tonight.

John Jamieson

Simply not good enough a starting 11 that screamed we aren’t winning this game. Dessers dowell and butland starting. No surprise we were 2-0 at half. Butland is lucky he never cost us 3 goals today he is a bomb scare now and shouldn’t be starting.

Gordon Watson

Meaningful change has to start with new ideas and new investment. Clement is a symptom of wider problems not a cause. Fed up to the back teeth with what we are served up, years on end.

SC81

We need rid of the Parks and the other shareholders who have overseen the last 4 years. Clement has to go to but the lack of leadership is awful. No wonder the players think they can coast along in 2nd place. Who the hell holds anyone to account?

8luenose1872

Starting Dowell was beyond criminal. Apparently he has a reputation of giving youth a chance, he's the only manager in Scotland who doesn't ffs!! He needs to go, he hasnt fixed our defensive issues all season long so its clear he just sends them out the same and asks for better and anytime the off chance we get momentum the sports science guys will ruin it.

Dougie

Thanks for all the videos during 2024! The look on your face says it all Davie! Wish you and the H&H family all the best for 2025 and let’s hope for a brighter future ❤️🤍💙

Stewart Robertson

The Daily Update song tomorrow has to be “The End” by The Doors.

Iain McKay

Starting XI was that of a man who's either lost the plot or wants sacked.

Don Currie

Aaaaaaargh! That’s all 🙁

Neil Fox

The fact you start with 2 players who've hardly played in the past 2 months and you take them off at half time speaks volumes

Bryan Watson

He has got to go, he just doesn't get it afterall unfortunately. Don't know who we replace him with right enough but this cannot go on. Even if we somehow win on Thursday, absolutely nobody would be convinced that it would be a turning point. The players are shitebags bereft of any decisive quality and the standards dont exist - you have multiple players including your club captain posting pictures and videos and wee edits of themselves in games incl big games we have lost in seasons we have won heehaw but awk its okay because I scored a goal or I skinned someone. I don't think they hold each other to account, nobody willing to say this isn't on and heres what we all are responsible for. I don't think they respect the manager enough for him to remotely impact the situation even if he was capable of sorting it which I don't think he is.

Andy Elliot

He has to go. Simple as. I bought the “rebuild”, I bought the “need for financial sustainability” (I still do) but I’m not buying piss poor team selections, stubbornly ineffective tactics, mindnumbingly boring style of football and an away record that is not fit for purpose. There are no signs of improvement, not an iota of hope that we can get better. Except Igamane. That boy has great potential.

Robert Deavy

It’s now gross negligence with the board keeping this fraud employed Place him on gardening leave and move for an interim manager As for his sports science team (over qualified PE teachers) Get them to fuxk as well

Martin Sutherland

Wasn’t up nor down during the game. All stress, panic and anxiety absolutely gone. It doesn’t matter if we win, lose or draw. Whist Clement is here we will be a joke. PLG, Pedro and PC the worst appointments in our history.

David Mackie

With you 100% David manager has to go. Yes its the result of 3 years of horrific management decisions at board level down BUT the manager has shown zero evidence he can build a team and motivate them. He has to go.

Graeme Burns

Beale?? Many of todays problems come from Beale (and Ross Wilson buying players GVB didn’t want. It takes time to shift them on when you’re running at a loss and trying to mitigate financially.

Billy McCormack

Soon as I saw the line up, I didn't watch the game, glad I didn't, said after last game that I won't be going or watching Rangers or supporting this club while that fraud is still there, said ages ago Butland needs dropped and let Kelly get a run but Baldy Beale is a blind fool.

Graeme Burns

Phil Clement needs to stay. He will get this right and needs our support more than ever on Thursday. League is realistically beyond us given the ‘form’ the current leaders are in. We were diddled out the league cup, and have shown we can match them on the pitch (but not in the VAR studio). Our European form has been good, strong - and a truer benchmark of capability - with last-8 a possibility. Another transfer window - a first choice centre half please - and we know who needs to be moved on. With continuity we can build towards a title challenge next season - stronger team, stronger backroom and stronger boardroom. It takes time - be patient, keep the faith. 🇬🇧

Kevin Blyth

I’m absolutely fed up with this team from top to bottom. We were lucky to get a point out of that - 1 point in our last two games shows the shocking level we are at. Was dumbfounded at the starting line-up. To be 14 points behind at this stage of the season is unacceptable. Time for Stewart to prove he’s not a board puppet.

Jim Milne

Beale couldn't beat an Aberdeen team that won their first game at Ibrox in close to 18 years. Beale like Clement had a good 6 months, then the board bankrolled £20m each only for it to fall to shit.

Martin Sutherland

Pedro lost our record to Aberdeen. Not sure what the discussion is here. Do you think Clement is good? Beale is just above these on the list. PC is, comfortably, the worst since Pedro.

Jim Milne

How much patience is too much and how much isn't enough patience? I'm 46, and I was in the womb the last time our away form was this bad. We've lost finals to them before due to bad referee decisions without being 14 points behind them after 18 games. Not trying to argue, I just feel I could give Clement the rest of the season and it not change.

Graeme Burns

Beale got sacked after getting destroyed 3-1 at home vs Aberdeen and his duds getting exposed after pathetic defeats to Killie and a weak, transitioning Celtic team. A huge mid-step by the club. Recall PSV taking us to the cleaners too.

David Kiltie

At half time I thought this is the end for certain. I was resigned to 2nd half of going through the motions. Instead we saw a huge improvement and so frustrating not to get a winner. A bipolar afternoon - half of it indicated a manager who had lost the plot and players who had chucked it, the second a manager who could make effective changes and get a response out of his players. Criticisms of Clement are myriad but I will say something in his defence apropos the effect of sports science advice on team selections. In this case the benefit of a correct decision is counterfactual, so a manager will not receive credit. A player if rushed back and is totally ineffective, or breaks down and misses 6 months; a player is not substituted and then gives away a penalty or a goal or picks up a second yellow. You can’t know when such scenarios are avoided.

Douglas Innes

Every chat today mustve went a bit like this " Dowell cortes ridvan is exactly who I'd pick.......if i wanted a pay off

Greig Ward

Let’s be honest clement will be away on the 3rd. After 14 months he still doesn’t get that playing team away from home you need a team that is willing to fight and battle for every ball then get an early goal and the majority of teams are done. He constantly changes his team and puts players like dowell who shouldn’t be anywhere near a jersey and again thinks Dessers is an answer tor us up top. You were right all along David, even when we had a mini revival first bad result and the support will be after him and that’s what happened.

Graeme Burns

We can’t buy our way out of this - our opponent has a significant material (and political) advantage. It’s hard work, sacrifice, setbacks and unerring resilience to build our club back to where it ought to be given the size and passion of the supporter base. Something that’s taken years to wreck will take years to fix and ‘resetting’ a management team proven in a comparable European league is not the smart move at present.

Leslie White

Watched David’s video and normally I agree with him, especially re the hand ball for the first goal. Does he not remember the old firm game where we score two goals basically in two minutes, for VAR to take the game back approx 45 seconds to find a fifty fifty tackle too of course chalk our goal off for a foul. So when a player has the ball against his arm in the process of the goal how can VAR justify it, it is part of a foul in the process of their first. I just hope our C.O. digs the VAR team again, plus Millers tackle!

Russell McGhee

All the best David to you and the H&H team. We are a truly awful football team led by a man totally out of his depth.

adam houston

His times up and he shouldn't get the game on Thursday

Bryan Watson

Huge improvement? Didn't look like that from where I was sitting at Fir Park and we were VERY lucky not to be 4-1 down to Motherwell. Igamane does fantastic for both goals and Cerny got us further up the park but we went from abysmal in the 1st half to just kinda meh for the 2nd half. Rangers should be blowing these teams away and they routinely look better than we do both home and away. I don't enjoy bashing the team, but to say there was a huge improvement in that 2nd half just shows you how awful the 1st half was because we were nowhere near good enough at any point during that game which for a Rangers team is totally unacceptable.

Bryan Watson

I'm not a Michael Beale fan by any means but Aberdeen beat us at Ibrox twice in Gerrard's first season and under Pedro so no idea where the 18 years is coming from there

Rose Mcloughlin

Happy new year to you and your family and the same to the other podders...great team....great reports...just a pity at what you have to come on and talk about....thank you anyway.

David Kiltie

That is my point, Bryan, a significant improvement from a quite horrendously low base. At half time I was expecting a heavy defeat, which would have happened had the players chucked it.

Jim Milne

I agree with everything you're saying but with 1 title in 12 years of patience I don't know how many have the patience for easily 3 years of rebuilds, etc in the future. Everything since 55 our board has done has caused this. They're singing about 10IAR again FFS.

Jim Milne

I honestly thought it was longer than 10 years and couldn't remember any going back to early 2000s. I'm angryAF so likely getting the wrong stats for the wrong club

Bryan Watson

I get it wasn't as bad but wouldn't call it a huge improvement. For me a huge improvement would have been coming out and winning that game 5-2 or something in the 2nd half. Even in the 2nd half we were so far off it.

Bryan Watson

Just frustrating. Feel like the manager, players and board are actively taking the piss out of us at times with the performances, actions and words. Still hold a grudge after travelling to Ross County and Dundee, watch us bottle the title and have the manager tell us we played well

Colin Hexley

Thank you David and your team A Happy New Year to you ALL. WATP

Andrew Whiteside

I’m in total agreement. The board need to give the manager the players to be able to rotate properly to maintain quality and consistency in results. We need at least one centre half, attacking centre mid and a striker/winger in January. If not then the board are letting the manager, team and fans down.

Mikey anderson

Do you honestly believe he get it right? Show me the evidence? We are atrocious to watch in 90% of games this season and some of his decisions to to drop/rest/start pish players are baffling.

greg sutherland

No one looked at that team selection and felt positive.

Colin Kennedy

Thanks to the wider H&H team for the last year, but a big shout to Cammy, Kevin and yourself for breaking cover on pods and content last few days! Tough shift and really appreciated! Have a great New Year.

Vanb bryceter

Given the last 2 performances I think the bigger shock would be if we take anything other than a doing in the next two games. This is the worst I've ever felt in my life watching this shite. My daughter actually asked me if I was OK during the game as I was so quiet. There are many failures in that team but I kid you not I've played in better back lines than that defence today they were fucking embarrassing.

Scott Franklin

He’s at the stage Warburton, Gio, Beale and countless others have found themselves at. Even if he wins a few, the next bump in the road puts him back to square one.

Nom De Ploom

Sadly our little purple patch was a false dawn, as suspected by a lot of us. When people don't learn then you can't be optimistic about their future. All the best for the new year to all the podders & their families. Long may your lum reek.

Gordon Watson

Hear what you’re saying but think the ‘flaw’ in your reasoning may be that we always seem to have a squad of foreign recruits who love a good Thursday night in Europe but can’t front for a street fight in our domestic duties when it matters. Thats a symptom of a deeper problem that begins upstairs. I don’t blame Clement, Gio or Gerrard for that, by the way. It wouldn’t matter if you had Klopp, Mourinho, Rinus Michels or Pep in the role, the players are the players, the budget is the budget, the player development pathway, scouting and recruitment plans are what they are, not fit for purpose.

Derek Maxwell

We are unbelievably bad at the moment, and as much as i hate to see anyone loose their job, surely the board must step in now & let him go. Wishing you all at H&H a happy new year! RTID

Jim Milne

Gordon, I feel maybe I'm in the minority. I know the squad is threadbare but I fully believe these players are better than they show under Clement in the SPFL. No matter who we have had in defense we have constantly lost goals due to the formation and tactics of a high press that leave us wide open. I'm honestly not surprised Butland is leaking goals. There is only so many one on ones a keeper can save, or so many goals that are really not down to Butland before it impacts his confidence. I'm not saying he's perfect but the teams confidence is low and continuing with Clement isn't the answer for me. Caretaker for the rest for the season. A caretaker incidentally that's told on day 1 "you're here to steady the ship. You might get a backroom staff job long-term but you won't be the manager", until we find the right candidate. Although it's now 11:55pm where I am. I've been up since 5am after mistaking the game for a 7am K/O, I'm tired, angry, frustrated, apathetic, etc that the club we all love has come to this, again.

Graeme Duncan

Thanks David, HNY when it arrives.

Graeme McLeod

Nah. Doubling down on appointing the wrong manager is just as bad as sacking managers all the time. Clement absolutely isn't the man for the job and there's nothing that suggests keeping him until the summer is going to suddenly result in him understanding the standards that are expected. The only reason he won't be sacked any time soon is because it's highly unlikely our board were competent enough to put a clause in his contract that allows us to get out of it reasonably cheaply.
