Rangers 3-1 St Johnstone Postmatch Reaction 12 Jan 2025

Rangers win in a match which will be remembered more for what happened in the stands than the pitch.

Our club is a circus David. Something needs to give sooner rather than later

Alan Keegan

Thanks David, we didn’t learn anything about the team. Did we learn that there’s major splits in the support? (don’t think so) .

Vanb bryceter

We are in a real quandary now. A manager the fans don't believe in and a team going through the motions. Only the cup to win and I'm not sure that is good enough. We need to see progress and it hinges on the quality coming in this month and how many of the hanger ons we can get rid of

Scott Duncan

The subs he made did not contribute enough. This squad is not good and carries too much dead wood. The referee was absolutely awful again!

Bryan Watson

Will get this out on here because Twitter is far too toxic. Full disclaimer I never left on 55 mins today because there would have been 0 point in attending for me and ever since Covid, I genuinely go to every game I can (ST holder and go to most aways) because I remember how genuinely sad I was that I couldn't go to the football. I recognise that we all want the best for Rangers which is for us to be Scotland's Premier Club again - the only thing we disagree with is how we, the fans, get us there. I thought today was an absolute circus to be honest. I'm really cynical about the staged walkout malarky. If you think non-attendance is the vehicle for change then fair enough all power to you but what is the point in going at all? Don't half arse it - don't go on Wednesday, don't go to Old Trafford or Tannadice, don't spend your money until you get the change you want to see if you really think that is the way to go about it. People may have walked out at 55 today but they still got their MyGers Points, they are still going to Manchester, they will be hunting for a Parkhead ticket for March. I don't doubt they want whats best for the club but for me personally the 55th minute walkout was a performative side show because they are still walking through the door in the first place which defeats the premise of non-attendance. That is just my view and I don't think ill of anyone who disagrees. I think those booing the walkout also need to have a look at themselves, the folk walking out have a right to do it just as the subway loyal do week in week out because they pay their money. However, having sat in the new cantilever today I think there was more to the boo'ing than just the walkout (I'm in the Club Deck but sat in CR because there was a spare seat beside a relative). The UB were boo'ing a group in the Main Stand Front who were singing which was wrong imo and then I think loads in the CR were taking general frustrations out on the UB (folk moved out of their long standing seats to accomodate the move, place stinks of weed, people who generally don't like the flares / fines stuff). No much to say on the park today, it was us in a nutshell. Its the stuff off the park that has really disheartened me today to be honest.

Jayson Moore

Not for me but we all want the same thing. I think the UB walkout would’ve been quite hard hitting if it wasn’t for the boos - a proper silent protest/walkout but with the pyro fines & especially the upheaval of so many loyal ST holders from the Copeland to accommodate them they were never getting much support today. I think the boos were to them rather than the reason for the walkout.

Billy Forrester

They were absolutely aimed at the UB. They do not speak for us all and are a minority who think they are more than what they actually are

Bryan Watson

If folk think non-attendance is the way to go fair dos but a staged walkout for me personally feels contradictory and half arsed. Why go in the first place? Scunnered and want to protest but not scunnered enough to miss out on MyGers points because that has implications of not getting tickets. Agree that it felt like the boos were aimed at the UB which I think we can all say that so far the move to the Copeland has not worked out at all.

Stu Baddeley

I didn’t understand having McAusland and Cortes playing on their opposite sides? Neither in great form so surely they play in their natural positions to help them.

Colin

Imagine booing Rangers fans who actually are trying to create change , from the one's who sit in silence week in week out and contribute nothing to the match day atmosphere, we really do have a strange fan base at timed

David P

This board has turned the club into an absolute joke. They have sucked the fun and joy out of following Rangers and turned Ibrox into an absolute cesspit of toxicity that's only going to get worse. I don't understand the fans that are choosing to believe this is all part of some massive plan or rebuild. All you have to do is listen to the managers words. He's felt like he's been hung out to dry. There is no big idea to get us back to the top. We're simply treading water and sitting 15 pts behind in the league, we're drowning.

Billy Forrester

Change. How can we oust the owners of a club who have pumped millions in, yes they have made some terrible decisions but they own the club, unless we have some other multi millionaires lined up in the wings the protests will do diddly squat

Gregg McKee

Is that it re the ‘protest’? Deary me

KMc

We’re a club in suspended animation. It’s depressing and change is needed.

Doogz

There were no need for the booing, the people who left were fully entitled to protest, They are just like us all people who want the best for our club, and quite frankly are at the end of their tether with what’s went on. I hope this current board do not take the booing as support for them by the majority,as they will be in for a rude awakening shortly if things continue to deteriorate.

David Kiltie

Good point, Billy. The directors can be criticized on many counts but it is their equity and soft loans which provide the financial base of the club and they take zero from the club in terms of either remuneration or dividends. There is no billionaire Rangers fan Sugar daddy waiting in the wings to buy them out.

Bryan Watson

I think the boo'ing was a general expression of anti-UB sentiment from people in the Copeland from what I heard being shouted etc round about me.

Max Todd

A fair amount of truth in there but what’s your solution? Who do you want to sell up and leave? Who is waiting to buy & invest? What billionaire is going to appear and pump money into a loss-making SPFL club?

Graham Jones

We all know that our away from is the main thing when it comes to our inconsistency, and we know that our inconsistency is down to the average age within the side, Inconsistency comes with the territory when you rebuild form a youth core, so that is where they need to focus on things. The fast steps way to help with that is to bring in experience, but from what the CEO was saying this would appear at odds with the way they want to operate in an executive capacity. In my view, they either want to fix things this season or it;s likely they’ll end up firing the manager they have said they want to retain. He needs experience and they want younger assets. I know the one I’d chooses right now, as for the protests, people can choose to protest if they like, but I’m not sure it did any good today. When ti was the spivs we were protesting against then it was understood if you walked out. They were actively damaging the club with intent, and they had to be stopped. The current board just seem to be incompetent in getting the big strategic decisions right, which is something else. We need to separate the board and the manager because they are different things entirely. The manager is being criticised because he can’t fix the situation the board have left him to work under, and to be honest, no matter how many times you change the manager there is no quick fix. All you get from a managerial change is a fresh face and voice that will stop being listened to with two or three months. The current football; issues require hard work over a longer period to fix what is wrong when we play away in Scotland. Much of it id stupid mistakes in defence, but y some is also poor game management, and the rest is a lack of composure in front of goal.

David P

My solution would be that the board start to run the football club properly. I don't believe that they would sit back and watch their other business interest perform as poorly as we have in recent years so why do they find it acceptable to do so at Rangers? My solution would be that they stop making absolutely horrific decisions that hamper the club financially like allowing Ross Wilson to run recruitment into the gutter, appointing Beale and giving Clement a years extension off the back of absolutely nothing. I want them to take ownership of their mistakes and not to instead dig their heels in further and arbitrarily back people who are failing such as Wilson and Clement. I want there to be a bigger plan as to how the club sustains success and not just Douglas Park coming out and saying "the plan is to win more". The board need to leave the running of the club and decision making to those that are qualified to do so. You might point to the appointment of Stewart but recent developments have made me question the power he will ultimately have at the club. I don't as a fan need to go out and find a Billionaire willing to take over the club in order to hold those currently in the positions of power accountable. I want those with the best interest of the club to be in control. I don't doubt we have that but I also want those with the ability to actually run the club and be successful at it. That I think we have seen over a sustained period we do not have. Only time will tell if we get real change or not but until then I'm going to be asking questions of this board until I see actual signs of progress.

Bryan Watson

I was in there with my Mrs' dad today because his pal couldn't make the game. The 2 of them and the folk round about them had sat in their seats in the CF since at least the mid 80s and were moved to accomodate the UB. I don't think enough has been said about how much that move hasn't worked so far. The Copeland is probably the one stand at Ibrox that are the total opposite in terms of age, and views of football culture. I think from speaking to people impacted there has been a lot of ill will towards the entire situation from the move, the drum, the overwhelming smell of weed + antics like fighting in the town, the fines they bring to the club etc it all came to a head today imo.

Elaine Campbell

Quick throw in that we are not used to.... Could that be because we have spent the last 10 years or so waiting on Tav jogging over to take every single one of them? 😂

Greg

After the antics today I'm fucking glad someone was moved to accommodate me.

Ross Thomson

I think that fact there was about 30,000 there today says more than the actual protest. Folk are just not bothering to go.

Bryan Watson

It was poor all round. As I've said I don't agree with folk booing the UB as they walked out, they've paid their money just like the subway loyal have yet nobody boos them (althoug I think deeper issues at play in the Copeland). Equally, the UB started booing and hurling abuse at a group on the Copeland side of the Main Stand Front for singing. Thats a ridiculous level of self entitlement to think you can boo at someone for singing. I think the UB do a lot of good work for the club and generate a really good atmosphere. I am not at all disputing that they care and want whats best for Rangers but think today has widely missed the mark. It has created an absolute sideshow circus that has totally distracted from the real issue at hand which is 3/4 years of horrendous incompetence from our club's custodians. I'm not sure how we change that as a collective support without having to make major sacrifices ourselves i.e. not going to Ibrox at all, not going to away games no matter how big or who its against, not going to cup or European games, not renewing MyGers or STs which absolutely nobody wants to do for obvious reasons. I think we all need to recognise that no matter our differences in the solution, we all recognise the problem and we all want to reach the same end point because we are all Rangers fans who want us back to being the dominant force in this country.

Mr J K Murray

become such a frangible institution, not just this season, cannot ask supporters to support what is being attained to on the pitch, cannot be worse in August can it,

Oliver Young

I think we overestimate the amount of people involved in the booing. Even if 1 in every 8 people are booing, you are still going to create a decent level of noise. It’s being made out as if the majority of the stadium were booing which I think is an incorrect assumption.

Oliver Young

They make money on their loans. We repay them with interest. Fact of the matter is they shouldn’t be required. We should have reached a level of sustainability by now, it’s 2025 ffs. That is on the board and the board alone. They better continue to provide these loans because this mess is entirely their own doing.

Stuart Mowat

Whilst I understand and think everyone has the right to walk out (or boo), we seem to be reacting to a lot of issues and there is a real lack of clarity on what it is that needs to change and where we are on that journey. For example does the reduction of average age and expenditure explain our away performances/record? Whereas our home record is very very good. I'd really love to hear a (balanced as I know David's view on the manager ;) ) H&H podcast covering key target measures, what we could/can realistically expect, where we are with each and can we visualise enough progress by next season: 1) home record 2) Europa league record 3) ability to compete v celtic / top European teams 4) Reduction of average age / Quality of homegrown youth 5) reduction of salaries and expenditure v expected results 6) playing identity (is one enough for home and away? Could this be why we are seeing jekyll and Hyde performances?) And finally... 7) away form Just writing that highlights the number of challenges Clement and Rangers face during a rebuild. Are we making any/ enough progress?

Chris Wight

The Union Bears - The Noisey Minority. Yesterday completely encapsulates the relationship between the wider support and the UB. They put up banners demanding better at board level and that the club has been run poorly since 55. Messages we can all get behind. They organise Tifos that we are all proud to see and be a part of. However, singing “sack the board” just shows they have absolutely no idea. As I’m sure Andy will attest to, this board have plundered unbelievable amounts of their own money into the club, getting little to nothing in return in the form of soft loans with low interest rates or converting them into worthless shares. Without this we would be miles behind where we are right now. The board have made mistakes, cataclysmic embarrassing mistakes, and everybody knows that, including themselves. But the recent appointments at chief executive and chairman level show that the board are willing to change to better the future of the club. Protest the managers position or support the manager that’s the two choices right now. Asking for the board to step down is moronic.
