Not for the first time in Rangers history was the Scottish Cup becoming a bit of a problem but, in his first full season as manager, Walter Smith had managed to break to jinx. Patron Mark Boyd joins Martyn to revisit a 'quiet' cup final but also run the rule over a very underrated cup run.

Ma wee pal from Kingsmead Boys Club in Cumnock, Stuart Angus, was mascot for this game. He won a competition on Scotsport to do it the jammy bastard. You can see him before the game in all his glorious freckly gingerness. Goan yoursel Gengus. 👏🏻😂

1st cup final I went to with my auld Da, as a 10 year old, happy memories.

Mark wood

My first cup final I can remember great memories

Jonathon Watson's 'The Goalden Years', described "half of Hampden as a sea of red, white and blue, bedecked in Union flags.... meanwhile at the other end were the Rangers' fans...."

Mark Boyd

Probably the best time capsule I’ve heard Martyn do. Very McCoist and Hateley chemistry 😂

Missed the ballot on my bus, hadn't missed a game all season. Brassed necket it a front door Ibrox. Asked Oleg if he had any tickets, he gave me 2 for no money. Sat next to Terry Hurlock and his bro. Dale Gordon's mum and dad and the great Alex Willoughby. And we won

My first trip to Pittodrie that season for that game, Wednesday night and my Dad pulled me out of school with a fake dentist appointment to go. Travelled up with big Andy Smillie and we went for a dodgy curry in Aberdeen and ended up being off school for the rest of the week! I remember the game at Ibrox against Motherwell and sneaking into the East Enclosure from the Main Stand, Miko scoring 2 great goals! Remember the game at Mcdiarmid park well, and of course the semi-final..... the full Rangers end signing "Waddell, Waddell GTF!" after Davie Robertson got sent off. What a horrible night for weather, glad we were under cover! Super Ally! I even went to the Airdrie v Hearts semi in the Airdrie end, )-) and the highlight was John Martin swinging on the bar! I don't remember much about the final but think I was in the West Stand but remember the Airdrie end being mostly blue! My first Rangers SCF, glad we won but I remember the atmosphere being really flat, I think because of the semi! Great memories, think I was 11/12 that season, definitely in 1st year at Bannerman High.

Being from Airdrie I will never forget that weekend, one of the best weekends of my life, I was In the Airdrie end as my family were mostly bears but some (like my papa) were Airdrie but as the podcast hints at, all looked out for us and were of the mindset, if Airdrie were not winning it then that will do for us. I went down to the old Broomfield when I got home with my Dad, papa and cousin to welcome the Airdrie team home and they let us onto the pitch and there was bears present to clap them home. Never seen one fight, just hugs, handshakes and drinks raised (mostly Buckie hidden in panda cola bottles) Then up to my Aunties for a party with the "tunes" blaring and a few sing songs I was over the moon we had won the cup and my Hero super ally got one of the goals, but I was over the moon for the town as well, it had taken massive knocks from a bigoted council and they had shown what a great community we had in our town back then

Airdrie end for me as well, I'd a season ticket at Broomfield since '86, used to wear my Rangers gear whenever both played. By the time of the cup final I was supporting Airdrie but. Was down Broomfield afterwards, amazing times. Airdrie ended up getting their first and only European qualification as a result of being cup runners up. Beaten by Sparta Prague with Pavel Nedved making his European debut at Broomfield!
