The autumn of 1987 perhaps summed up the Rangers season perfectly. In the space of eight weeks, Rangers would have their manager banned for five games, their most precocious midfield talent hand in a transfer request, their star striker found guilty of assault, their three big English imports charged by the police and their captain ruled out for the season whilst breaking the Scottish transfer record on a player who would become a club legend, qualify for the quarter finals of the European Cup and play three matches which, more than 30 years on, fans still regard as amongst the greatest Rangers games of all time.

David and Alan join Martyn to try and make sense of the drama that unfolded.

I thnk there's merits for Martyn's point about that Rapid Vienna game. For the younger generation, it was their first time seeing European Group football which is the modern norm. It doesn't compare completely to that 1st European Cup game after so long in 1987 but part of that, as the other guys mentioned, was due to what was achievable at the time. The Europa is probably where we're positioned now so I could see why it would register as such a big thing. Obviously though, when that next 1st CL group game hits, it'll be a level up again. I was sitting in the front row of the Copland Rear the night of the Kiev game. Hadn't ever heard anything like it. Been seeing debates about how there can't be an atmosphere without the UB in Ibrox and that we need (safe) standing. There's been many a night that would rival anything in the World in Ibrox since it was seated. As pointed out, the spectacle creates the atmosphere. It can't be manufactured.

Another excellent podcast. As an older bear I remember Butcher breaking his leg against Aberdeen. We would have won the league that season if that hadn’t happened.

David Baillie

Great show lads. A roller coaster season right enough. Alan made a great point in regard to refereeing performances, in particular the sending off of Roberts and Durrant against Accies the previous January. I have always maintained the referee that day, Dr, Andrew Waddell gave the most bizarre, incompetent and inexplicable display I have ever seen from a Scottish official. Right up until Kevin Clancy recently at Parkhead. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Steve Clark

West enclosure for the Kiev game and the first thing you noticed was the pitch.at the end of the game they put up on the scoreboard above the Copland and broomloan “to Russia with love”

Martyn Ramsay

We’ll discuss this in the next episode and I know that it’s the received wisdom but I don’t buy it. Far too much chaos around the season from the outset and Celtic were possessed by a different kind of hunger. It was painful but ultimately to our benefit in the long run.

Scott McIntosh

Brilliant again lads ,that sonic boom after Goughs equaliser against the mockits ,will never be surpassed .

Steve Clark

We had a pen shoot out v forfar in the 85 league cup and east fife in the 86 league cup.

Steve Clark

On the 2-2 game at ibrox v them.i was in the east enclosure and when Peter Grant put the ball out for Roberts to take the goal kick that lead to the equalizer.grant turned to the EE and held up his hand with a 2-1 gesture.when the final whistle went he run off the pitch in tears😂😂

Alan Bradley

Remembered the previous penalties about 20 minutes after we recorded, I’ll just add this to my growing list of “senior moments” 😞

Martyn Ramsay

We literally talked about East Fife the other week! Can only presume my mind meant big finals etc but aye, apologies!

Martin Boyd

You sure it was the 2-1 gesture looked more like the V’s to me 😅? East enclosure was mental as was the game. Great cup final as well, best I have been at despite the slight worry of missing the train back to London. Was more than a bit worried about Francis one step penalty as well😱

Lee Colvin

In work now with that 'We are the Glasgow Rangers boys' record in my head 😄

John Johnston

The players should have been dealt with by the sfa and not the courts. When it went to court Celtic did not pay for a solicitor or legal fees for their player and he had to pay for it himself. What a crazy season that was but as you pointed out three of our most memorable results came out of it.

Rob Shorthouse

Not sure I agree with that, Alex. It gave us something to pin the seasons failings on, but I don't think it was the root cause.

john cowden

I think Celtic did eventually pay. They were reluctant and recall Souness offered for us to pay McAvennie legal advice etc. might be a false memory but pretty sure I read or heard that

Steve Clark

He had the two fingers up in one hand and one finger on the other,it might have been the middle finger knowing him right enough.everytime I see the equalizer and the scenes at the final whistle in the east enclosure I can see myself celebrating as I had a red hand of ulster flag and you can see it flying about😎

Martyn Ramsay

Yeah that’s pretty much true. Give them a break, they had spent £750k (from a fair windfall) so you can’t expect them to pay fees and expenses too

Raymond Paxton

Copland rear for the Dynamo Kiev game. What a night.Chris Woods playing a joke on captain Terry Butcher...making sure the team remained in the tunnel and Butcher ran on to the field himself.

Raymond Paxton

Another incident that may have been forgotten from that league cup final was Willie Millar's knee high challenge on John McGregor.Absolutely disgraceful .

LAURENCE MACRAE

This was a superb listen , I couldn’t believe we lost the league that season but when you listen to this you can get a better understanding of why. Incredible result beating Kiev , they really were a top top team at that time and if we hadn’t beat them , I think they could have gone onto win the tournament. I don’t think we were quite good enough that season but should have won the UEFA cup the previous year, especially when you see that Dundee Utd (granted an excellent side at that point) reached the final.

John Mcmillan

The Skol cup final was my last visit to Hampden until that debacle against Hibs last year……

Alan Bradley

Hopefully you’ll see us winning the Scottish Cup there in a few months John. 😉

Alan Byers

Brilliant again lads.
