David and Alan are here to help Martyn wrap up Souness's difficult second season. A huge European opportunity is missed, chaos continues, a cult hero has to depart and UEFA introduce a new regulation that would have far reaching consequences.

The Steau game was my first match and you're right about the atmosphere pre match at the ground.

Will never forget being smuggled in to the corner at Ibrox House pub with a can of juice. The whole pub roaring at a certain event at Milltown cemetery that day that was on the 6pm news.I thought they were cheering at the rangers team getting announced.

That season was amazing I thought. I didn’t feel despondent at all. The buzz and hope was huge. I was a student then so ‘available’ and duly sent to queue for 2 hours outside Ibrox for Steau tickets. No mobile phones to keep you amused. I counted the bricks at the back of the Copland! That season our club sent four buses to Ibrox packed every week such was the enthusiasm. If only butcher wasn’t injured 🤕

Craig Fryatt

What a brilliant line to finish with

What's been interesting about this season review is that 2 of the 4 pods dedicated to it have actually been quite positive. Shambolic start and a chaotic end after losing to Celtic in March but the in-between moths actually seem pretty decent. And it's an incredibly important season in terms of the building blocks that were put in place during 1987 which laid the foundations for 9 in a row.

Another interesting listen.I was in the Main Stand the night of the Bucharest game, a great atmosphere, Derek Ferguson was outstanding.

Mark

Jan Bartram was very talented. It's a shame the way that worked-out.

positives from the season........ 1. The management and players learnt that arrogance and complacency will not win titles, hard work, confidence and ruthlessness will....... 2. it happened at the right time, early in the Souness smith era........ 3. the rest of the league bought into the "Big names don't work in Scotland" anti Rangers rhetoric that the MSM had been pumping out, they became complacent, kept doing it the way they always had, before they knew it, Rangers had hit top gear, got on a roll and they all crumbled..... but then what do I, an ordinary run of the mill Joe know.... 😁😁😁

Stewart Thomson

Watched that tackle by Souness (if you can call it that 🙈) in the 2nd leg against Steaua so many times on YouTube. I don't know which is funnier Souness pointing to his sock or Archie's commentary, "oh that is a booking"🤣👀. Be looking at a 10 game ban for a challenge like that nowadays lol.

Loving this guys. I’m of the same era as David but not a season ticket holder. Bringing back a lot of memories but also enjoying the insight I missed back then

Alan Bradley

You and David seem to remember more than myself. 26 year old, pub, carry out on the supporters bus, what can I say. 😉

Fascinating episode. More mixed memories. The telly was also wheeled out at my school to watch the Steau game. We were all quite shocked to see the army troops around the track & it must have been intimidating! Chaos is the right word, there were serious downs as well as the sporadic ups. The reflection certainly brings it sharply to focus; the fact this season almost had to happen in order to create the launch pad for what was to come. Well navigated chaps.

Alan Bradley

Definitely. Actually mentioned to Martyn, watching Gers for over 50years, I was really fortunate to be at so many fantastic games during our club’s great history.

Tess

Favourite show on the network* at the moment, and the best is still very much yet to come. *That doesn't involve me

What a fantastic show, have you thought about writing a book about it? 😛 More seriously, that season was definitely the one I knew least about of the Souness-Smith era, probably for obvious reasons but was fascinating to learn about and get all your perspectives on We are always hostage to the moment we find ourselves in but I see some uncomfortable parallels to our current season - electric at times in Europe, struggling at home, some key issues with injuries and a growing sense that a trick was missed with recruitment

Dougie

Great show as always 👏👏 Can't get this Vision out my head, Martyn sitting with a stopwatch every time David or Alan go off on a tangent 🤣😇😎

CRAIG CASSELLS

Myself and mates, and about 50 others, had a half day from work on the day of Steau away leg and watched it in the old Videodrome Sports Bar (an all ticket affair). John Robertson of Hearts was guest!! and he dropped plenty of hints that Rangers were interested in signing him in the summer. A very dispiriting performance, really never got going. 2nd leg again losing an early goal to Lacatus really killed the tie despite recovering well to win the match.

Graham Leck

Such a fantastic show about the start of our magical year's , Thanks to Martin and everyone involved.

Paul Dunnachie

Great show again.. good perspective of events that happened around me as a 12yr old. I adored Graham Roberts but looking back, and at the pattern of his career afterwards, he had to go. It was an odd season - some iconic matches in amongst some awful periods of form & luck.

LAURENCE MACRAE

Superb show again , no idea the turmoil was that bad , really missed a big opportunity in the European cup , Dinamo Kiev I think were a better team than Steau , absolute madness at a time when we played with 2 strikers to have essentially only one , especially when we were still in Europe and going for the league. That March old firm game was my first one , terrible result but what an experience in the east enclosure !

Callum Dinnen

@Martyn where are you getting the Walter Smith quotes from on the Roberts situation btw?

Martin Davies

Another terrific show. As a 12yo, I was gutted when Roberts was ousted. He was one of my favourite players, and I was young and naive and fully expected them to reconcile. I remember being disappointed at the end if the season but I knew we had better players than anyone else and would strengthen again in the summer. It felt like a bump in the road to me - it certainly didn't feel like 86/87 was a flash in the pan. I remember Ally's miraculous recovery from the op and listening to the game in school on the tranny. That wee radio went everywhere with me when Rangers were playing, I remember being dragged around the shops or to my grans l on a Saturday afternoon listening intently for updates on the game. Am I imagining things or were we linked with signing Marius Lacatus shortly afterwards? Looking forward to next week and a more successful season.

The 3 2 Morton away memory was coming out at the end and at the top of the stairs a shout goes out at least there getting beat 1 nil, when you reach the bottom it was 2 1 to them and the Morton fans celebrating this and signalling 2 1 and not 3 2 which they actually beat us was baffling to a young 15 year old, this had fuelled my hatred of them ever since. The last game of the season against Falkirk will be remembered by the walk to the ground behind the great jock Wallace with almost every bear shaking his hand. I can remember being in awe of the size of the man.

Craig Robertson

The priest was from Millport I think. My gran used to speak about him.
