If trying to find a baseline of performance then last season was an aberration in that every player hit their purple patch collectively. If you remove the anomalies of Hibs/Celtic as low but equally Hearts/Dortmund as high, then this team is still woefully underperforming. That’s what’s been consistent, underperforming.

The issue will repeat next year as we are already planning to offer guys who aren’t good enough or available enough this year extensions into next season eg Arfield. As far as I can see the issue is that we are wasteful or at best not clinical enough up front across the attack bar Alfie. We drop guys into the forward positions based on effort and attitude more than output, we can’t have our attacking / attack mid players getting into the positions to take chances and being as ineffective. Arfield has never been anything other than an industrious player, Aribo is all skill but too often no end product right at the crunch, Kent just isn’t giving us what we need (goals) and if you drop back a line we just don’t have anyone who has it in their game naturally to shoot from distance. We control large parts of games and must expect better output from the team in terms of actual goals for me. Huge concerns about our ability to actually do that final bit in the oppositions box and the only players we have who might change things if given time and coaching are Wright and Sakala. Putting any time into Ramsey and Diallo is a total waste of time, utter short term panic (getting shorter every week) and just kicking the issue down the line. Desperately need a powerful dynamic midfielder and attackers who don’t make bad decisions but can finish when given the chances we make. Totally agree on Kamara that’s a bizarre decision. Also agree we need a better Arfield but think it madness to persevere with the flawed one and just hope his staunchness makes stuff happen. Just my opinion and appreciate others see it differently. The games where we controlled the games and actually played well highlighted the wastefulness more than the scrappy ones, so many opportunities passed up.

Kent behind two strikers is another option we could use and should try imo.

I do enjoy these shows but it does seem a lot of people that use xG, analytics etc almost expect football to be played 'academically'. Pep Guardiola last week showed his disdain for this type of thing as football isn't like that at all. A lot of people seem to refer to it when analysing football but, and this is just a personal view, it's not something the majority of football fans take notice of.

Does the xG measurement for a shot take any account for the expected number of defenders parked in the box in front of it? I can't help but feel that if you pick a random spot in the box, the real "expected" goals value for taking a shot from that spot would be higher for (say) Motherwell vs us, than vice versa, because the chances are that, on average, they would have more players back than us

Thanks all, that was an excellent analysis of where our season has by and large been disappointing, with the exception of a few highs (Europe). Completely agree that we have missed the Steven Davis of last year to act as the linchpin between defence and attack. At his best Davis can read when to inject tempo or slow things down and was my player of the year last year a real leader in that midfield.....Walter Smith always freshened his squad with at least 1 or 2 first team starters, our transfer windows have failed to secure this quality and we are as guilty as our east end neighbours were last year in asking this team to go to the well one more time. We are a team capable, in the right circumstances of producing Dortmund performances and equally capable of Aberdeen like performances. We don't perform well when denied space and that is a function of our poor recruitment. Also agree that missing Hagi has had an impact and we are sadly likely to lose Roofe for part of a season....my view is that is that we need to gamble on youth on occasion, Perth on Wed & Ibrox on Saturday it felt like some were going through the motions. Fans, I believe would rather see Lowrie and will be a bit more forgiving if it fails. He introduces an unknown face and is dynamic.....use your squad GVB. Looking at potential players the Malmo no.10 was an example of the type of player we need and Veerman was a missed opportunity. Recruitment could ultimately cost us, but I'm hoping GVB can find that illusive settled formation and push hard for this title.

Really enjoyed this one. I must admit all of the recent changes make it hard to identify a real philosophy from Gio. Definitely looks as if this season it’s a bit of compromise, between how he wants us to play and the players (fit or on form) who will get us through until summer transfer window. Next season, should hopefully be able to see the preferred formation with players to match. A really difficult puzzle for you guys, but really appreciate your opinions on how things look to date. System v psychological dimensions really interesting way to look at things.

Enjoyable listen and very insightful as I've come to expect from you guys - well done

One thing you never touched on was the enigma that is Joe Aribo. A guy with all the talent in the world but other than a spell in the autumn, he just doesn't influence games on a constant basis. For me, he doesn't provide enough goals and assists to play further forward, and he lacks the defensive discipline to play as 1 of a midfield trio. But he's probably too good not to play! How do we get the best out of him? What is his best position? Is he a big enough character to ever become a talisman?

Veerman was the ideal player that should've been recruited.
