It's not ideal, but it needs to be in place to protect children from manipulation. We have also benefitted from picking up players for buttons, in comparison to what they are actually worth. I would imagine educating youngsters about the benefits of staying at Ibrox is all you can do and hope they buy into it.

David Gardner

Youth development/succession planning in every business is key and even if we lost the prize gems as long as it’s still a key area where we can drive revenue then it’s still very much worth it. If we are bringing through a Nathan Paterson every 5 years and selling for that kind of money, it’s massive for the club. It’s worth noting that not every player who’s class at 15/16 will go on and reach their potential.

Stuart Borland

Good to hear the ally show coming tomorrow. Really enjoying it. And yes rest easy Taylor

Samuel Campbell

The development fee needs to include future fees based on appearances, cuts of future transfer fees etc

Graham johnston

There is advantages and disadvantage to the youth system. We will lose top youth players however I think we should use the system more against the English clubs. Picking up players like Bassey for low fees as English clubs have to pay more. We don't use this anywhere enough in my view

Monkspath Miko

100% agree this is the key. Can’t stop the EPL mega bucks cherry picking the top talent (we do it ourselves in Scotland) there just needs to be better compensation

Graham johnston

Also I know it will never happen but I'd love the 3 foreigner rule to come for all European countries. Dropping that more than money caused the top 5 leagues to more ahead of the rest.

David Speedie

Changes in the structure to development payments would be a start. They need to increase It’s a bit wrong but it’s all about levels. We’ll get the late developers (Bassey fits that looks) and the ones who really support us.

William Ross

My assumption is Clancy is being saved for either of, or both of the other two games

Andrew Johnston

As above there needs to be more to the structure of development fees. Clubs outside the big leagues need an incentive to continue to develops talent. It could be based on future appearances or sell on percentages for x number of transfers

Martin Davies

We can't stop the EPL enticing our youngsters down south. However, there's nothing stopping us picking up players from clubs who don't have our financial clout either. I'm not just talking Scotland but Europe wide. It's just our (current) place in the food chain.

A good few fans, me included, have gone right off the idea of Kevin Thomson managing Rangers the way he has been sticking up for Brown and Porteous this season. Publicly saying Brown did nothing wrong with the Kent red card and on RTV vs hibs saying Porteous isn't that type of player and is actually a great guy literally when is is walking off after his red card. That's not future Rangers manager material.

Player burn out obviously is a thing for example our own uefa cup run then the knock on effect the following season knocked out against Kaunus ? Look at leeds once thwe championship resumed they played the last 9 league games 2-3 weeks off and had a decent season which saw Phillips and Bamford called up to training camp for euro 2020 ( in 2021 ) started this season both players got injured early on and hardly featured since and the rest of the team is following suit ....... managers could help by rotating more though but the attraction is always to play your best players ......

Gary Brown

Always enjoy the update, thanks 👍

David - Even UEFA an organisation driven by money must acknowledge that to sustain the talent conveyor belt from smaller nations compensation needs to be set at a minimum of £1m(+% of future fees, as mentioned above) or clubs can only transfer at 21 to the top 5 nations poaching talent. This would allow investment and improvement in the talent producing country. I know we have benefitted from cross border arrangements, Joe Aribo being the best example so we cant be hypocrites, but for me this is the exception, football today is a play thing of the bigger clubs/nations and fans are losing out on seeing local talent that is snapped up by academies where they by and large disappear, instead of having a grounding in their home country. The best example of how to do this is Holland, who have benefitted from having young players in B teams play in lower leagues, similar to our B team but a higher level and graduate to the senior squad ar around 18 or 19, play well, then move on. The smaller nations need a pay back or we morph into watching the same players/clubs every year in Europe ( as is happening now in the Champions league) while our best talent is hoovered up!...end of rant😇

This has been something that hasn’t been addressed ever since Bosman. I think a lot of younger bears have little idea the impact that Bosman had on the football world. UEFA and FIFA have stood back and let it develop to this point, mostly out of their fear of the large European powers. It also takes a few backhanders to stop legislation going through to change the situation, but it could lead to clubs like ourselves prioritising more on the first team and a B team, which would mitigate the risk of losing money long term from development costs. Either way, something needs to change because it’s made academy football unsustainable, which could kill off the grass roots. The FA’s are incapable of running the grassroots side on their own, and certainly the SFA don’t have the funds to do it. It’s been a disaster waiting to happen. I think it has the potential to fragment the game further, unless we see some realistic scale of compensation. The current level of compensation were written for another era, and there has to be a better understanding about the impact this can have. He might. Are it down there, but he might not. What we can say for certain, is that he would develop to the first team faster up here, and he would still get a move. Remember that Gilmour has spent a season running around chasing shadows in a Norwich shirt because Chelsea don’t fancy him anymore. He got into their squad when they couldn’t buy, but is now just a number. Patterson has barely featured, if at all, since moving to Everton, and he’s the best full back at the club. He will face obstacles being erected in front of him t every turn down there. That’s why Ryan Kent moved up here, because he would get to play football every week and develop his game.

There's always value to developing talent and, as the premier side in Scotland, we have some kind of responsibility to do so also. Maybe we'll not get the benefit of enough of the top tier talents we produce for now, but we should still be able to produce enough of them who we can convince to make it worthwhile. It should improve over time too but we need to get to a place where not making the grade at Rangers still guarantees you that lower league England career that top tier English sides can. Short-term money is going to be important to some, of course, but I think it's more important to get to a place that being phased out by us gets you a move to Wigan on a few grand a week rather than Partick Thistle on a few hundred quid a week. That's still the big difference and that will only change by consistently producing top tier talent. UEFA will obviously have to take further steps to reduce the continual stockpiling of talent by EPL sides. Maybe there's some kind of budget cap that can be introduced for players outside the 25 man squad who didn't attend school within a certain radius of the club?

Gordon Millar

I agree with a lot of your points, but believe this can only happen if we are brave enough and have correct coaching structures in place to bring talent through at 18 or 19 like the Dutch do, it's been much debated and is not an easy ask, but that should not stop ambition. Ajax and others have developed this over decades and balanced this with clever experienced players, it serves them well and it hasn't reduced their profile in Europe. We cannot compete with the top 5, so sustainability has to be built on attracting and producing talent to boost our player trading model.
