And then he was gone. David and Alan join Martyn to discuss the moves and machinations that led Graeme Souness from a position of promising his future to Rangers in February to moving to Anfield in April as well as trying to sum up his place on the Rangers pantheon.

Apologies for some sound issues.

That’s some mighty big words

Fraser Martin

Great episode. Captured my memories perfectly. A tumultuous divorce. What an era. Souness was both radical and revolutionary, the Atatürk of Rangers and Scottish football.

Lee Colvin

I'm sure Davie Dodds was centre half for that league game at the Piggery.

Steve Clark

Front page of ff fanzine “shoot souness and win a metro”

Douglas Innes

When Murray had that chat outside Souness's flat about taking year off I'd say the seed was planted then for Walter Smith to step up a sits hard to imagine a big named coach/manager coming in for 1 year

Graham Kelly

What was Souness to RANGERS? He was a like a defibrillator!!! He shocked us back into life!

Callum Dinnen

Bit of a harsh comment on Advocaat - his legacy was Auchenhowie. It's hardly Advocaat's fault that his legacy wasn't properly used.

Callum Dinnen

A relatively minor point but what was the £23k fine for the lager advert mentioned on the vox pops when Souness' departure was announced?

Alan Bradley

Absolutely Lee, their 3rd goal seem to remember Dodds looking surprised as Coyne broke away, thinking it was his birthday. So many good Gers chances missed and comedic defending.

Johnnie Mitchell

Another fantastic show and fascinating listen lads. Thank you. So glad you used the word Swagger to describe what Souness brought back to us. Always the word I used to describe it. Cheers

Colin Carstairs

One of the best shows on the network & been a fantastic stroll down memory lane.Swagger defined a lot of Rangers players & an era where we as fans embraced it totally. A must listen

I'd never heard of Aggie the tea lady. Such a darkly comic symbol of the suffocation Souness was clearly feeling in Scottish football Fascinating question about where Souness sits in the Rangers story. Martyn - you suggested that he may be the most significant figure in your living memory. How might we look at Dave King, Steven Gerrard or Douglas Park in 10 or 20 years? I'll look forward to tuning in to "Relentless: The Gerrard and Gio Years" in about 2045 to find out

John Mcmillan

Is Souness the”John the Baptist” to Walters “Jesus”???? Asking for a friend

Marc Patterson

No way has there been 20 episodes of this. It's flown by. A wonderful series

I never thought I'd eagerly anticipate an hour of 'Domination' being the very highlight of my week! 😄 Thanks again Martyn, with David & Alan for this amazing episode. The most tumultuous of months during our club's most tumultuous era - The Souness Era. Expertly diagnosed, thought provokingly discussed & lovingly reminisced.👏👏👏 There was a vast myriad of factors which ultimately led to Souness leaving. 'Allowed' is a key word though - Not allowed to properly manage his team from the touchline. No longer allowed to field who he wanted in Euro games & the re-emergence of English clubs into Euro cups not allowing him the advantage he once held. His mental health & ego not allowing him clarity. The SFA & media (& tea ladies!) not allowing him the simple common decency of doing his job without taking potshots at every turn to pander to their own egos - petulant, pathetic, destructive jealousy, like someone 'keying' a lovely, expensive car!! What is Souness to Rangers? David covered almosy every tangible aspect in a wonderful summary, more succinctly & eloquently than I can. My 'cub' years were 79-85, and they were dark & dank. For me - He led us from the dark into the light! He 'gave us our Rangers back' before the concept was invented. I'd compare him to a fighter test pilot / astronaut from the 50s / 60s. Fearless of the unknown, willing to try anything or take any risk to succeed - simply because he could, and wanted to! I have a slightly different viewpoint on The Greatest Rangers Manager - so many of them are, for their period, era and circumstances The Greatest Rangers Manager. Souness could not have been as great being in McCoist's circumstances when taking the job. Smith could not have been as great in Souness' initial circumstances, and vice versa and the other comparisons are practically endless. It's the old adage of comparing apples to pears! Between 1986 to 1991 Graeme Souness was the Greatest Rangers Manager. His place in our history and his achievements are assured for all time.

Very interesting point on timing and the unique challenge every era brings As Herodotus, Father of History put it, "Circumstances rule men, men do not rule circumstances" Looking through that lens, is the fact that Smith had two different spells in two very different circumstances even more impressive? Is Smith also unique in leaving on a high? Has any other manager been able to do that?

Gary Brown

Thanks Scott👍 Success is so stat (& trophy) based in history, and that is just the way of things. History is written by the winners. But circumstances, strength of opposition, age, experience and finances at the time, absolutely dictate how a manager operates, recruits, buys, sells and tactically sets out, plays & adapts. I hadn't heard that Herodotus quote, must look him up 😊👍, but it's spot on. I guess 'managing' the circumstances best rather than ruling them gives the greatest chances of success. Walter's experience 2nd time round enabled him to manage in those circumstances, the 1st timer young Walter would not have been as successful in the same situation. An older, managerially experienced Souness would never have managed Rangers the way he did 86-91. Right man at the right place at the right time! Wallace first spell, treble 78. Waddell ECWC 72, very poor trophy record overall but that was a cracker to bow out on. Had some set of circumstances affecting his tenure! Thanks again Martyn, David, Alan & other contributing podders. I can't get enough of this series. Its all about the subject matter and as was said Souness made Rangers the most exciting & newsworthy subject. That maelstrom is passed, calmer waters ahead but nonetheless multitudes of incidents, successes & an odd failure to be discussed. Really looking forward to the upcoming episodes.

Scott King

Up there as one of the best series that’s been on here, great job by all

Paul Dunnachie

Superb show - really well researched, presented and discussed. Those final months were quite volatile looking back as things reached a natural ending.

Raymond Paxton

A bit behind, but catching up with these shows. As ever, excellent listening. As for the SJ tea lady, it was reported she was a celtic fan and gave Mr Souness a mouthful of sectarian abuse.I can't remember if it was the fanzine or the website confirmed that her foul mouth bile was in front of Rangers and SJ directors and board members. Bigotry and hate are allowable when it is against us.
