A brand new manager with a squad of walking wounded was given four games to see out a two point lead and win a title. When that disappeared at Fir Park, it was the making of one of the most exciting conclusions to a league season in history and helped shape the decade that was to come. Andy and John join Martyn to relive the tension and nerves as 1990/91 came to such a fitting end.

The reason I took a debenture in the Club deck…. As I could not get a ticket for love nor money for the Aberdeen game

Johnnie Mitchell

Another great listen lads Cheers. Very interesting point Martyn regards the mindset going into the match having lost that 3rd goal the week before. I wouldn’t have agreed with you leaving Fir Park that day, but it makes perfect sense. We had to win, and they didn’t know whether to stick or twist. The rest is history.

Did the BBC show finish with a montage? Seem to remember Europe playing and Ally’s celebration from the December game

David adams

Another fantastic episode guys , keep up the great work .

Graham Roy

Great episode and loving this series! Interesting question about smith if we didn’t win the league but also Hateley, woods and Johnston what would have happened if a new manager was brought in?!

Douglas Innes

Excellent as per usual ..... was this the season that Ally McCoist on the lap of honour looked tearful and it was said that this was possibly his last game at Ibrox ..... Could possibly be wrong on the mccoist comment

Love this show my era😂Getting a ticket for the east enclosure on the Friday before the Aberdeen game it’s still my favourite league win even the 99 game at parkhead which was also amazing 👍Cheers guys💙🇬🇧

How much do you think the Taylor Report helps change the landscape of Scottish football in terms of a lack of challenge to Rangers from 1991 to 1995?

john cowden

Certainly in tears and for him subdued I could be wrong I don’t recollect this being a summer of him going rumours I mean he had survived souness and was Scottish

john cowden

My opinion, I don’t think so Aberdeen had an all seater maybe it didn’t meet standards The other end of the city were a complete and utter laughing stock. Having a stadium which they didn’t begin to seriously address until c 1994 was perhaps the least of their problems. Cambuslang ? Moving from one toxic dump to another . Royston? How apt Their market research, their fans want to stand , perhaps seats were like pragmatism, only for us. I mean some of the stuff with them around 1990-1994 is stunning and hilarious. Terry Cassidy ? Martin Hayes ? Etc etc etc

Another fantastic stroll down memory lane & recalling feelings which had be a bit faded coming back to life. Fantastic..The team developed a will to win no matter what & that’s for me what winners are all about.

On Mark Hateley , I don’t know if you covered the 1st love st game, my Patreon was playing up during Seville. This game Hateley sets up the 1st so called Rangers fan behind is shouting your offside to my bemusement, he wins the penalty for the 2nd and he shouts you dived Hateley you cheat, so I’m livid telling him to go and support them , we had to be separated by fellow Rangers fans , some of his friends are telling how much a arsehole he is. Off course you know Hateley scores the 3rd and every one round about us is going mental telling him to F off but he’s standing there no emotion on the Rangers goal . I was wanting mcoist to play as well but you never ever boo a Rangers player during a game.

Still one of my top ever Rangers games and Hateleys first goal is in my top 5 goals it was a fantastic day. second year with my season ticket in EE and the first time I'd shed a tear at the game, Ally came to the enclosure after the game with tears in his eyes just set me off, just shows the pressure we were all feeling that week in the build up.

I started my Standard Grades in the week between the Motherwell and Aberdeen games… I’d love to say that my head was exclusively in the exams that would determine some of my future but that would be an utter lie 🤣 Nervy week as the enormity of a last day showdown between the two teams who would win the title was discussed at length in the media. We were in the East Enclosure as usual - the relief of getting those tickets off the scale. We all bought season tickets for 91/92 to make sure that following this side didn’t bring any more stress about getting in. Incredible atmosphere - the game itself had too much at stake to be a classic.

Everyone forgets that the goalposts were moved mid season. Relegation was scrapped either just before or after Xmas. As well as Aberdeen played that season that was a big factor on them going on that run. On another note Rangers were touring the country with Roadshows. The Thursday night before the game it was at The Music Hall in Aberdeen. The local news filmed us going into it & tried to make a thing of Rangers doing it deliberately to upset Aberdeen.

Another awesome episode Martyn thanks and thanks to Alan & John for their recollections & opinions. This was a vital spell at the time. In retrospect this league decider was possibly THE most important game in club history. Great show going over this guys 👏👍 There certainly were plenty of doubts raised & voiced re Walter's appointment at that particular time. That is not disrespecting him, his legendary status or memory, simply historic fact. It is only natural that many did have doubts, and voice them, in that situation. Winning league, Souness goes, Walter in, losing league. Before a 'Sliding Doors moment' was a thing, that day was THE sliding doors moment for our club in so many ways, for so many connected to it and for Scottish football. Walter, Hateley, Johnston, McCoist, Gough, David Murray, Rangers, Aberdeen, Celtic & their supports would be in an entirely different landscape, with an entirely different history if Rangers, Walter & that 'revolutionary' team had lost the title on that day. Everything was liable to change; Would Walter continue or another 'name' be brought in? Would it have been Ally not Mo who moved on? Would Hateley have become the success he did? Would the revolution regress? Etc, etc, etc......... I remember that I and every supporter I knew had a very strange mix of supreme confidence of a win but at the same time having absolute clarity, understanding & acceptance a loss was possible, perhaps probable, given Souness' departure, Walter's takeover injuries & poor form (by that point turning into more of a trend!) But the years of dominance had simply given everyone, players & fans, the in-built belief & confidence we were the best, end of, and we would just do what we always did - WIN!
