Colin is here with your Friday update and is joined by Andy McGowan who gives his thoughts on the days news and his own ideas on what our summer should look like in terms of finances, recruitment and acquisition.

As always with Andy it's a great listen.

Hearing that Bassey got an assist in a Nigeria win over Ecuador came as a surprise. Mainly as Ecuador won 1-0 😂 Though Bassey was the best player in a Nigeria jersey and given positive reviews by all yet again.

CRAIG CASSELLS

The report I read said that Calvin delivered two fantastic crosses that should have been converted by the Nigerian strikers. Imagine they were something similar to the two dreadful misses from Bassey crosses that Aribo and Diallo passed up in SC final.

Colin

sounds like I read the match report wrong, apologies.

Fascinating analysis on the finances as always Andy. I agree that the majority of fans' expectations are miles off the reality. There's already meltdowns happening on Follow Follow at the suggestion that we may only buy one first team starter unless we generate funds from player sales.

Scott Watson

Excellent analysis Big Sexy. Thank you for taking the time out to give people some different points to consider, even though they might not necessarily like them much. Thanks Colin for thinking to cover it on the update too I think it benefits us as a support if we can be a wee bit more informed about this stuff and every step in that direction is a good thing

Agree with Andy on the vast majority of his thread/points. The exception being around player contracts and being willing to let them run down. If you use Aribo/Kent/Morelos as examples, we cannot let these guys leave for nothing in a years time, even at a very low estimate you are talking between 5-10m for each player this summer. Take Andy’s point that we can’t replace Kent for 5m but then if you keep him and he doesn’t extend you are just kicking the ball down the road and then you have to replace him next summer for nothing. If the club is to be run self sustainably player trading is critical to that, we simply can’t let players of their value, even with a year left leave for nothing. They either extend or we maximise what we can get for them this summer imo

Andy McGowan

It's a question of cost effectiveness. Selling a good player just to get a token return to then buy a replacement that costs more than you took in and is sub standard or doesn't settle right away is not cost effective. Its worth remembering a club buys the players contract not the player.

Watched the 12th March 2017 old firm with the Las Vegas RSC in their local bar about 5 mins away from the strip in a taxi. (Thats the one Clint Hill scored 5 mins from time and enraged the tarrier ball girl behind the goals). Brilliant bunch of guys and looked after us after the game. They shared a bar with a sons of anarchy style biker gang who accommodated us with Sunday breakfast buffet after the game. Doing a cracking job of holding down the fort Colin 👏

John Johnston

A big shout out to Colin for doing a great job on the update. He is heart and hand's John McLaughlin a more than capable replacement for the established number one.

Ryan Stewart

Yeah that’s all fair mate. It’s a balancing act that isn’t easy to get right. I also think in an ideal world 1 or 2 of these players would have been moved on already but a reluctance to upset Gerrard was a factor last season as you mentioned and also covid basically killed the transfer market in that 5-20m price range that we would be looking to sell players in. Should see that market pick up again this summer I think

Pedro

Great wee tune today as well 🙌

Andy is 100% correct Connor Goldson is the exception to the norm dont think we'll see " as " an important player re-sign for us in this way .............. i had him leaving this summer on a bosman 15 months ago because he hadn't extended his contract the same time Tav did .

Martin Davies

Disagree with Andy on offers for guys like Morelos, Kent and Aribo. Even if we sell Bassey for big money, we can't turn down 8 figure offers for guys who will walk for nothing in 12 months' time. We all remember how keeping Laudrup for an extra year turned out. Goldson is the exception in 2 ways - he didn't down tools, and he re-signed. Much better to accept offers thus summer and have that cash there to fund a replacement, than let them run down the contract and leave us in a much worse position next summer. We can't think only of season 22/23, we need think of transfer windows to come. I do agree with a point Andy made a few weeks ago though that there will be some players who choose to run down their contract, and that's fair game - both parties signed up to it - and there's nothing the club can do. But we can't let Morelos, Kent and Aribo, potentially £50m of talent, all walk for nothing.

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update Colin & Andy. Plenty interesting stuff to think about. It's going to be an intriguing summer.

Andy McGowan

I'll play devil's advocate, how much to replace them with players who will be ready and integrated and good enough for the CL qualifiers?

stefan strzelecki

Be interesting to know how much actual finance is the club generating on merchandise ? The volume and cost of products, the magnitude of the fanbase who must have at least purchased one top.

Graham Jones

Not sure iI follow the logic of Andy’s take on contracts, but it’s an interesting one. I’d rather take a fee than wait 12 months and hope it brings in extra European cash. That’s not working from a position of power. Connor was a gift for the board this summer. He’s on less to worry about. However, there are others they have to sound out about contracts and what their intentions are. I just hope Ross Wilson brings his A game this summer, because I’m less than flattering about the performance in the last three transfer windows. As things stand a huge amount of Mandy could walk out the door in assets next summer.

Martin Davies

Fair point re the CL, having to play qualifiers while integrating new players is far from ideal. But surely better to sell them this summer and use the proceeds to fund the replacements than have to replace them next summer after they walk for free?

Tommy

Decisions needs made on extending the likes of Kent, Aribo and Morelos due to their contract length. We can’t increase the wage bill so I think it’s inevitable that one or two will go. This will then free up a % of this money for the manager. If we get £20m for Bassey and £12m for one of those above then it’s not unrealistic for the manager to get maybe 10-15? This should be enough to identify some talent and freshen things up. Hopefully we as a support are mature enough to embrace this model.

Tommy

The most recent accounts suggested it’s not as much as we’d expect considering how much product Castore are releasing. The next accounts will be interesting. Definitely far higher than the darker days we’ve just came through but there’s a lot clearly not right, our IP ownership seems questionable and I’m certain Ashley is still on the scene somewhere.

Tommy

8 figure offers needs to be accepted We then trust the process that the board can continue to identity a Bassey, or a Lundstram or a Morelos or another Aribo who can come in for a low fee, deliver and then in the future be sold on. Kent’s numbers in particular is extremely poor. We know he’s a great player but I think cashing in on him right now and investing in someone who can deliver goals/assists would be a wise move

Andy McGowan

The question isn't how much could we use for transfers, it's how much could we add to the wage bill. Spending 10 to 15m in fees would see an accompanying wage bill increase - that's our issue

Tommy

We’ve already shown that good recruitment doesn’t necessarily mean big wages. Yes, Lundstram is on a decent wedge. But Bassey won’t be. Aribo and Kamara probably not either. The aim is to replicate the filth, sell top talent for 15m-25m, replace with guys 0-5m. Wages more reasonable. Can afford to pay more for those without a fee (eg Lundstram). Trust the process Andy, you’ve said this to us before! I’ll be honest if we don’t sell one or two and we allow players to run down contracts then it shows we’ve learned fk all from the Bain and 2012 days.

Neil McIlvride

Agree with lots of the points above and enjoyed Andy’s take on the finances as usual. I’ve been clamouring like a lot have for 1 year and less players to be sold and replaced but it’s all about bang for our buck. With Kent, Kamara and Aribo you are talking about a combined transfer outlay well below 10m and three settled players that know how we play, have won a title with us etc. I’d be more confident of 56 (and the additional guaranteed EL finances that brings) and another Euro run with those three in the team rather than rolling the dice and hoping we get a replacement player in the market that hits the ground running day 1, never mind 3 of them. We’re most likely about to wash our face for the first time in years due to our Euro successes so id be more relaxed about getting another seasons value from the above players and then seeing where we stand in 2023 for replacements / extensions.
