Shane and David bring you the first episode of their new CROpod/Heart & Hand series, Watergate at 50. And there's no better place to start than with the story of the man at the centre of it all, Richard Nixon.

Find out about the formative years of the future President; the endless dirty tricks to win elections; from the office of the VP to political castaway; and his rise back to the White House (helped by what could only be called some light treason).

Great, been waiting for this. Loved all the history/Presidents stuff so far, so don’t mess this up D & S 😉 Just a suggestion, but ever thought of covering the Cold War? Pretty big subject but would be really interesting to get your take on it.

David Gilhooly

Big thank you for this show David and Shane. Started "All the President's men." Last week. So this will be a bit of a Watergate fest for a while.

Charlie Nicolson

That's an interesting show. I'd been acutely aware of Watergate without ever really delving into it.

Shane

Fuck, that'd take me about 3 or 4 years to get through.

James Barrie

Been looking forward to this ! Thank you gents

Dougie

Always expect exuberant mentalism now after hearing Young Americans...I've been brainwashed.😂

Shane

Someone asked me what the intro to this show was gonna be. I'm sorry, but the song that precedes my voice always is one that mentions Dick Nixon. There is no decision in that.

Dave Simpson

Get yer stranger things cliff hanger to hell, i can't wait for the pentigon papers! Roll on next week

John Smith

Big fan of Tricky Dicky

Ryan Lynch

Apart from the part of Forest Gump, I have never looked into this part of US History. Look forward to this.

Paul Kerr

Excellent. Many thanks.

Stuart Porter

Not a topic I am overly familiar with. Really glad I gave it a listen. Looking forward to the next episode.

Bill McCairns

I remember the Watergate hearings on TV when I was about 13 and saw the film All the President’s men a few years later. I’m really looking forward to the rest of these shows. Even the names briefly mentioned in this show have brought back memories.

Steven Harvey

This is such a great start to what I expect to be a fascinating show. Loved episode 1 👏🏻 (Especially the Police Squad music at the end 😆)

Andy Sladen

Been looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint. Well done gents I doff my cap to you both!

Alan Bentley

Thanks for doing a show about my favourite Futurama character. When are you going to do one about Bender ? 😀

Gary Brown

Not a man or subject I know much about, other than the 'montage' style history of it; break in, knew about it, cost him his job. I never studied it further. Wow, some first episode! Thanks David & Shane, that was brilliant. Really interesting throughout, an extremely enjoyable listen due to the knowledge you guys have for the subject and your enthusiasm when sharing it with us. Excellent! Really looking forward to the rest of this series and learning more.

Stuart McWilliams

An excellent first episode. I've not long finished the slow burn series on Watergate so I'm really looking forward to the next episode.

John McMillan

Superb. Loved that. Felt like 5 minutes long.

Lewis Wardrope

Excellent listening. Looking forward to the next one

Gordon Mac

Great start lads thank you, I knew a little but every time you speak about Nixon I find out something I did not know, fascinating stuff, it's a critical point you made at the end this is all in the context of WW2 and now Reds under the bed , John le Carre and Fleming could not have made this shit up 😀

mark wyper

What a great listen made the journey to Spain on holiday a lot quicker can't wait fore the next episode.

David adams

That was a great episode guys , just finished gaslit and watching the the Martha Mitchel effect this evening. Perfect timing!

Shane

I thought the Martha doc was good but it's basically the Slow Burn episode about her with pictures.

Iain Campbell

Brilliant episode guys. Looking forward to next week

Haining84

I only know the very basic basics on Nixon/Watergate so thought I’d give it a shot.I’m hooked. Can’t wait for next week.😃

Mark

I live really close to Whittier. It blows my mind a bit that Nixon was educated there.

Mr J K Murray

The editor of the Washington Post at the time of Watergate & allowed the journalists to wear no label sneakers, Barry Sussman, Mother, was Russian.

Shane

Ohhh we'll get to Barry, the man written out of history. I have a lot of time for him.

Alan Keegan

Great podcast guys. The Drive By Truckers are much more generous to George Wallace on their Southern Rock Opera album - are they dead wrong ?

Shane

He was a horrible piece of shit, no other way to it.
