David Gardner

Imo poor decision from the club - guys been brilliant for us over the years but had a shocker last season. He needed to be released.

Garry kirkwood

Some rebuild this, arfield Davis and McGregor all Renewed 🤦‍♂️

John Buchan

The earth has not moved for me very disappointed for me it’s a season to long

John Monk

Hey if he’s staying as a backup I don’t see the problem but if it becomes clear that he’s still the number 1 that is a bit worrying. I do think now that McCrorie will leave.

Nico

Disaster. Lazy move from the club and now undermines McLaughlin

mark wyper

Great news you always need rangers men in the dressing room to instill the rangers ethos.

John MacKay

Bad idea and hopefully second or third choice

Craig Mcwhinnie

I just can’t help feeling that this is a sign of things to come for our transfer window this summer, if this was this time last year I’d have had no doubts about a new deal for McGregor, however after his up and down season last year I felt it was maybe time for us to move on, so many teams worked on playing the ball on top of the keeper based on mcgregors weakness to come for crosses and cost us enough points last season that may have won us the league, that being said he did have some tremendous performances in Europe but I just can’t help feel that his best days are far behind him now, Davis and Arfield are different where they won’t be relied on as much as we would with mcgregor but can still bring that Vital experience to the table, but up until today I had no real concerns regarding how our transfer business would play out but now I’m not so sure.

Ian

Well I am okay with this. Presence in the dressing room is key. Davey weir gave his best in his latter years and yes he may have made some mistakes last year, didn’t they all!!!! He also make some world class saves at key moments. Saves that only he could make.

John Smith

Really not liking the negative energy. Greegsy most likely won’t be number one and will be a brilliant voice to have at the club 👍

Neil Wilson

The article very much talks about his influence on the squad and competition for places etc. I wonder if he will be an option rather than automatic first choice.

Jamie Gilchrist

I think on the back of Davis and Arfield….it all just feels a bit flat for me. Will be interesting to see how much game time he’s getting.

John Smith

That’s what I’m thinking Neil. I’m quite sure they’re will be an option in the deal for him to take up a coaching role

Brian Rae

His comments don't suggest he's coming in as backup. Due to his stature at the club, he was given a free pass last season. But If he continues to cost us points, I can see his legacy being tarnished beyond repair. Not a chance he should be our no.1 this coming season.

C. J

If he’s ahead of McCrorie in the squad, I’d be pretty annoyed.

Graham Jones

The club’s not moving forward in the football department, and it has nothing to do with the manager and coaches. I love Greegsy, but it was time for him to move onto the next stage in his career. However, it’s done now, so I’ll give him my full support.

Ross Hardie

As long as he's backup to McLaughlin I've no issue with this. Ideally we loan out McCrorie although it seems his move could be permanent. As Gio hints at, it's his influence in the dressing room and his professionalism (no laughing in the back) that makes sense why he's kept on. However, if he's to be number 1, then bad move from the club.

Stewart Thomson

If he starts against Livingston, then serious questions need asked of our recruitment. Legend status never in question, but last season was one too many, it was patently obvious. You can't keep older players around forever, both parties need to move on at some point. Also makes the apparent send off in the Scottish cup final look rather bizarre now?

John stoddart

Wilson is really really relaxed about player contracts 😩 This kicking the can down the road to next season is madness the squad needed refreshed and I understand Davis getting a new deal as he was excellent at the end of the season and with N.I he has plenty left. McGregor was phenomenal for us but he was a big reason we lost so much ground in the league and the fact he stopped coming for any crossed ball killed us. As I said the squad needs fresh first team quality we ain’t getting it and looks like we have to sell before we spend anything.

Paul Kerr

Hmmm. Last season seemed one too many.

Andrew Buchan

Insanity is doing the same things and expecting a different result

Jock Wallace

Doing exactly what that lot did

Graham johnston

Only happy if he's filling the Firth role with much reduce wages. Teams targeted us last season on his weakness. I really don't want to start blaming him for losing games.

Gordon Millar

On the face of it, this is not the action that a progressive club with a cohesive recruitment strategy would take. Is it too much to ask the club to trust Jon McLaughlin(he might well be no.1 but we are left to guess) to be the goalkeeper to command his area that we all want, or to recruit someone with these attributes? I've no doubt that Allan McGregor will, if 1st choice pull off some fantastic saves next season, he is a club legend and will be a decent keeper, but is that the point? We need to be recruiting people that will be around for the foreseeable future and giving hope to our academy structure that we will use this route if the quality is there. Allan McGregor will get my full support but we need a sign that the club has a clear direction on recruitment.

Alan Murdoch

Not sure about this one. I kinda hoped if he was signing it would be with an emphasis on coaching etc and he wouldn't be first choice any more

Harold mccartney

The thought of him starting against Livingstone gives me the absolute fear.

Robbie McCarroll

If we had brought in a couple of new signing this would receive a better fan reaction. It’s great we keep our dealings in-house but you also loose a bit of good press by doing it this way when we all want a big name and get a renewal we were not champing at the bit for

Gary Brown

If he's still #1, I don't think it is a progressive move. However, I have an idea, personal opinion of what might be happening. We have McGregor, Davis & Arfield as 'mentors' & support to our young 'talents' (as Gio calls them). Our talents will get game-time - considerable game-time compared to what we are used to following Dutch philosophy & well tested practise. The mentors are ready to step in if needed.(Similar to Defoe) There is more to the reasoning behind this. Player trading model needs to be put into club ethos, 1st team planning & execution, it has to become the norm and supporters will have to adapt to this culture - not just for a bit, or until we get in a Champions League group, but is the way we are run from now on. I know youngsters are a risk, but the player trading model is based entirely on it. If we're introducing the lads with the 'safety net' of experienced stalwarts of the club it is as good 'risk management' as is possible, plus keeps the club standards / expectations right in the faces of the talents.

James McKenzie

I think this is good news, albeit the reservations are completely understandable. The situation will need managed. For those calling for a coaching role (similar to Defoe)... well, that coaching role didn't actually work out in some respects. Defoe is a great guy and could go on to be a great coach, but Alfie's performances were quite poor under his coaching influence. Maybe that was short-term pain for long-term gain, but perhaps a coaching role wouldn't have been the drawback free option that it's often being made out to be.

Gordon Millar

I hope you correct Gary, I do not see this as a progressive move per my post above but only because the club have given no context to their strategy of extending contracts for so many senior players (some of which I agree with). I ask only that the club set out a clear direction and they will have the support of the majority. Good post👍

Paul

Madness. The time was right to move on

Stuart

Makes sense if AM is backup to JM imho

Gary Brown

Agreed re Morelos James but he definitely had a massive influence on Aribo, Kamara & Bassey in a mentoring role and coaching what a striker needs from them in supply. Morelos is what he is, he doesn't have the 'natural' goalscoring ability or consistency of accuracy of Defoe or Roofe (or Makaay!). He can be coached to do what he does differently re link up but not how he is as a striker, eg cannot play with another striker, doesn't want to! McGregor can help the other keepers and can be like an old school 'prefect' in respect of club expectations & standards, keeping others grounded - how many Jimmy Bell stories are about that? Value to the club in more ways than one?

Ryan Stewart

If McGregor is staying as backup to McLaughlin then I guess i am ok with it. Although I just can’t see McGregor being the type of character who will be happy to train all week just to sit on the bench all season. If he is staying as number 1 I’d be very worried. A positive is that it could allow us to loan out McCrorie to get him some much needed games, presuming he signs a new deal of course. He is at a stage now where he needs to be playing, don’t think sitting on the bench for another season helps him develop at this point. I have to be honest and say I’m not as high on McCrories chances of becoming our number 1 as a lot of others. He has stagnated in the last couple of years and was by all accounts quite poor at Livingston on his last loan.

Jamie Kirk

Why has Morelos changed the 20 on his Instagram name to 30?

Sgems90

Mixed feelings on this as it stops McCrories pathway to the first team. Do we need two keepers over the age of 30?
