In the absence of any games or signings we figured we'd open the floor for a Tactics Talk Q&A.

  • Is there anything we missed last week that you would want to hear about?
  • What type of skills would you like to see added to the team?
  • Any changes in formation you would like to see to accommodate specific players?

Stick any questions below and we'll answer them in a show this week!

Thanks

Do you see any players in our starting 11 who you would be happy to be sold and replaced with a player who would better fit a Gio team. If so who would you be happy to see leave and what type of player would you like to replace them.

Ross Chalmers

At numerous points last season (in the SPFL) I was looking for GVB to use Sakala on the left and push Kent out to the right. I know with the change we would lose some of Kent’s effectiveness but he is fantastic going onto his left whereas Sakala is not. Do you think this is something we could look to utilise this season? We need at least one of our “wingers” to be contributing goals and I think this could be a way of making that happen. Sakala is raw and does not have the same technical ability as Kent but we cannot argue against the numbers he is able to deliver.

Simon

What do you envisage our strengths and weaknesses to be next season against them? How would you resolve/mitigate the weaknesses?

Dylon Aitken

Do we see a move away from the 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 to a three at the back formation? How do you think this would effect in the integration of youth players as they’ve been playing in a 4-3-3 system. Also if we are more fluid in formation does that limit or expand opportunities for players such as McCann, Lowry, king etc.

Gazza G

You mentioned Calvin a lot, but what position will allow him the most impact. I really want him at CB and LB lol.

Ryan Stewart

Granted it was only a 5 minute highlights package but it looked to me like Scott Wright in particular was playing very wide vs Partick in the recent friendly, with Tavernier playing more inverted. Gio also tried this a couple of times when he first came in with mixed success. Do you think this is something that could work for us next season? And what are the positives and negatives of doing this in your opinion? My main worry would be that it would stifle Tavernier a bit too much going forwards. Thoughts?

Rona Bluebell

Apologies if already covered before, but really liked the chat yesterday on the Tav pod about the expectations on modern players and how traditional positions like left back have changed so much. My question therefore is, how do you see players we have being used differently in the coming season tactically. Are there key positions that have new expectations?

Graeme Brown

What are the potential tactical / stylistic implications if - as looks likely - we sign Colak? Could we use him to play with two up front? Could he play wide right in much the same way Prso was often used wide left by McLeish? If we maintain one up front and he’s too different from Morelos, does that mean a complete restructuring of the team “in game” if he’s brought on as a replacement. Otherwise Might he suffer from “Itten Syndrome” if we don’t actually set our team up to get the best out him and play to his strengths? Or would we persist with trying to fit a square peg into an Alfredo shaped hole?

Graeme Brown

How do our current midfielders fit into Michael Beale’s themes of Spider, Destroyer, Energiser, Passer and Magician, and which of these categories should be our priority / priorities this summer window? (Note: the one that seems to stand out most for me is one he hasn’t included in that list; GOALSCORER!)

Chris Morrison

If the move to 3 at the back happens, where do you see ryan kent role in say a 352? Could he possibly be the 10 in that system 🤔

Ronnie Gallacher

if the only player we sign before the season starts is Colak (notwithstanding John Souttar) do you see us using a formation with 2 up front that will allow us to play him and Morelos as not sure he is a direct replacement if we play with only Morelos up front or are we flexible enough to change formation should Gio replace Morelos with Colak during the 90 minutes? PS, still think we need a goal scoring midfielder and is the young Israeli player (Oscar Gloukh) a real possibility, would he fit in to our systems and does he fit the bill?

David Kerr

Do you see Gio looking to implement a style/philosophy that is not dependent on Alfredo that we have unfortunately seen at times over previous seasons?

Gavin

I believe that as a support we are more nervous around Gio’s tactical decisions because there seems to be a higher risk factor. As a fan we could simply identify with gerrard tactic and the way it moved in and out of possession so easily even from a fan perspective we could clearly see what they game plan was. Which gave me comfort I guess knowing the players clearly new there jobs and roles. When Gio started to change things more One v One the shape of the team because less defined meaning we were comparing the teams structures and what initially seemed to me to be more simplistic from Gio is actually more challenging to deliver from a player POV and more difficult from a fan POV to watch and identify what the ideas are because it’s more specific to each game/team making it more complicated to grasp Do you think this is the case? If so which do you prefer? And is there a great reliance on trust from Gio on the support to back him. As Gerard’s team if they didn’t perform the game plan we could tell as we had watched the game plan on repeat for 3 seasons.

Ross Stewart

There seems to be a few players that can play multiple positions, Bassey Sands Lundstram etc. How important do you think that is tacticallybin terms of players we look to sign?

Douglas Mcgregor

We need a player in the centr of the park who either runs beyond the striker or can beat a man and open things up

Craig Fryatt

Could you see us going to a Conte style 3421 or 3412

Andy McNeill

What happens to physical presence up front without Alfredo short or long term? We seriously lack options for a domestic battle.

Piggott

A know you have said not much tactical changes since gio came in, a remember aribo with front Post flick on worked few times but we seem to have stopped that recently, have you noticed any notable changes such as set pieces defending/attacking?

Gary Brown

Out of interest mate, where did these MB themes come from? Listened to a few of his (older) coaching podcasts, not heard him refer to them, just intrigued to hear his theories.

Gary Brown

Thanks Graeme. Very interesting read. Probably Lundstrum as best 'destroyer' now and energiser if not sitting just in front & between the CBs in his shore up role. Definitely lost a magician in Aribo. Hagi can make magic. Young Lowry is a new hope for sure. The 55 season 2 x 'inverted' 10s rotating & switching sides, linking with the 9 and FBs was an absolute joy to watch + the pace of play & the pressing was devastating - we fans got SO concentrated in the results & pursuit of the title it seems the quality of football played isn't appreciated / is forgotten - it was awesome.

Gary Brown

Tactic - too reliant on Morelos?? When his goals & assists numbers routinely let us down! How does Gio alter this? Yes, I said it !! I know it / I will be unpopular and his European numbers are the opposite, amazing. But his domestic stats average over 5 seasons is 13.4 goals & 4.4 assists per season. eg if I said we were thinking of signing a striker with those stats, from one of the top 2 Belgian teams, but they'd won 1 league & 1 cup the past 5 years - would you be 👍👏🙂 or 🙄😕👎 Can we persist with a tactical philosophy centred on a sole striker with that return?
